If my time machine is full and it deletes backups to free up space does it mean i will eventually loose data

I have been backing up my hard drive with a external hard drive as atime machine
the last time i backed up time machine said that it had deleted the oldest backup to make more space for newer ones .
I looked back through the various back ups i have made and found that all my vidoes that i had taken off my computor and put on my external hard drive  were only on the earlest backups
my question is if the earliest backups are deleted to make space will i eventually loose all my videos -  if so is there a way to avoid data being lost

My time machine is full as it is backing up my imac and macbook. I am getting the orange flashing light.
I have looked at the settings and it does not seem to give many options on length of backups etc.
Im not sure what to do.
You may not need to do anything; Time Machine ordinarily deletes your oldest backups automatically when it needs room for new ones. The orange light is completely separate and independent from that.
Are both Macs getting backed-up regularly? Check via Time Machine Preferences > Options.
How much data is on each of your Macs, and how large is your TC?
I do have an old 500gb hard drive. Can i re format this and piggy back it to the time capsule to give me 1.5 tb?
No. Time Machine backups can't "span" multiple drives.
But if there really isn't enough space, you could connect that drive to your Time Capsule's USB port and back up one of the Macs to it, instead.

  • Time Machine Disk Full and Disk Repair Errors?

I have an external USB drive connected to an iMac that I use for TM backup. I received severel disk is full messages today, and the iMac told me that is was going to delete older backups and that's fine. But, I also have a MacBook backing up through the network (Airport) and that the Macbook was giving me the backup disk is full errors, and now it's saying: Time Machine Error: The backup volume is read only. To select a different volume...etc. And now that error is followed by a Disk Repair error saying the disk needs to be reformatted? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm sorry to see that no one has replied to Christopher in the two months since his post.
After 5 weeks of successful back ups I am now getting this same TM Error followed by Disk Repair error. The first time it happened I moved the sparsebundle and let TM start over. That worked fine and lasted one week, but now the errors are back. Today I tried repairing the sparsebundle in Disk Utility and it too failed with the following:
    Invalid key length
    Volume check failed.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
The same Airport attached 500GB HD has been receiving TM back-ups from another Mac for over a month with no incidents, and houses my iPhoto library along with a hundred gigs of other stuff.
The other Mac connects exclusively via ethernet. My PowerBook uses ethernet or wifi.
Something with my TM is corrupting the disk image. I'd sure like to figure this out.

  • I get notice that my Time Machine is full and can no longer back up.  Isn't it suppose to delete old files

See my question above in subject line

See item C4 in Time Machine Troubleshooting.
By the way, your system details mention OS X 10.4.8.  That OS version doesn't support Time Machine.  You might consider updating those details.

  • Time machine extremely slow and size of backup keeps increasing. please help!

I bougth a external hard drive form western digital, MyBook World Edition, and at first it was working fine, I make a first backup with time machine and it was perfect. last month when I entered time machine to check my backups they were all gone, and now I've been trying to make a new backup but it's moving really slow, like less then 2Gb per hour, and also it seems as it's over but them the size of the backup keeps changing (as soon as it reaches the whole size it gets bigger) Don't know what to do, I haven't changed anything in the system or anything.
The hard driver is connected to a router and I connect to it trhough my wireless network.
ps: sorry my bad english I'm not a native speaker.

UPDATE: It's now trying to do a backup of 31.7MB. It's stuck at 993KB (first it was stuck at 8 bytes, then at 87 bytes, then 88KB), but it took a really long time to get there. So now it looks like it's just slow no matter what. I haven't been keeping track, but it may have been stuck on 993KB now for around 40 minutes.

  • Time Machine with OSX Server; what happened to the free disk space?

    Hello all,
I am trying to do something that should be pretty simple. I have an iMac, with Mountain Lion and Server installed. My wife has a Mac Air. The goal was to get her to Time Machine backup through the wifi to my external hardrive. I think it is working, but here is the small catch. Last night, while getting it all going, it was saying "making buckup disk ready" through the night until now. Now it is actually doing the backup normally, i.e. I can see the data transferring. BUT, here is the question, in the mean time the external hardrive lost about 300gb of space which is the size of MY iMac backup. So I hope that when I turned on Time Machine it dosnt back up one time as my computer and another as a server. That may not make any sence at all.
Here is a screen shot of my external hardrive:
636.33 GB, before yesterday it was half that. But my wife's hardrive is 100 GB of Data.
Just a note, I had my hardrive wiped clean the other day before Mountain Lion was installed, and I have a "carbon copy" from before that on another hardrive. Can I delete the backup of MY machine and start over?
Thanks, I hope this is clear.
    Best,
    Justin

  • Ipod nano-memory full-how to delete music to free up space

how do u delete music and other stuff from ipod

There are several methods of deleting songs from the iPod and/or iTunes, and the method you choose depends on the settings you have selected for your iPod.
If you have the iPod set to automatically transfer songs, and you no longer want a copy of those songs on either the iPod or in iTunes, simply delete the songs in iTunes. Highlight the songs you no longer want then right click and select "clear", or from the edit menu select "clear". Next time you connect the iPod, the songs will be deleted from there also.
Only do this if you no longer want the songs on both the iPod and your computer.
You can also use the "only update checked songs" method in the iPod options (right click on the iPod in the source list in iTunes and select options, then select "only update checked songs"). With this preference checked, you can remove the check mark from the songs in iTunes that you no longer want on the iPod. The next time you connect the iPod, those unchecked songs will be removed from the iPod whilst still being retained in iTunes. You can check and uncheck songs as you change your mind about what songs you want to put on the iPod.
If you have the iPod set to manually manage your songs, and you want to delete the song from the iPod only, then select the iPod in the source list of iTunes. Highlight the song(s) you no longer want on the iPod, right click and select "clear", or use the edit menu as previously mentioned.
This method only deletes the songs from the iPod, so if you no longer want the song in iTunes also, you'll need to delete it from there separately using the method above.
If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, these settings can be found in the summary screen.
If you want to delete everything from the iPod and completely erase the hard drive and start from scratch, then you can restore the iPod to factory settings.
Only do this if you have the songs in your iTunes library, or a back up somewhere other than the iPod itself.

Message says I need an extension to download itunes.  Got a message saying coupon alerts were causing problems to delete.  I deleted "coupon alerts" in control panel and then deleted itunes to free up space thinking I could just go into itunes through web and pull up my account and hear my music.  Obviously im not an avid computer person.  Now I can't even download or open itunes without this extension and when it says search web there are tons and I have no idea which one is safe and which ones contain viruses etc.  can anyone help me resolve and suggest and explain what I should do about getting the proper extension and if I may have one already in computer.

My external hard drive for Back Up and Time Machine is full.  I bought a new HD.  Can I just begin using it and rely on the old HD for past Time Machine versions, or must I transfer the old Back Up and Time Machine files to the new HD?

    It is your choice.
If you don't want to be able to far back into the time slots covered by the old disk then just start using the new disk.
If you want to retain the ability to go back into those time slots then copy it.

It may be in the process of making room.  What version of OSX are you on?    (That process can be excruciatingly slow on Leopard or Snow Leopard backups over a network;  Lion has improved it greatly.)
A clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of  Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.   That should help you figure out what's going on.  If in doubt, copy and post them here (but if the same ones repeat over and over, drop most of the duplicates).
If you can, connect via Ethernet; it will be 2-3 times faster.

  • Time machine blincks orange and goes back no further than 10 days

loosing work is always a stressful affair, time machine malfunction on top of it drives me up the wall

I assume you mean Time Capsule (Apple hardware that combines a wireless router and hard drive, often used as a destination for backups made by Apple's Time Machine software)?
If so, that means there's some sort of problem with the Time Capsule.  Use Airport Utility to see what the Status is -- if it's not "Normal," there should be an indication of what's wrong.
It may be simply an indication that the TC is near full -- that could be why you only see 10 days of backups.  That can be caused if there isn't enough room on the TC's internal HD to back up your Mac.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #1.

  • I have partitioned my time capsule, but I can't get it to work as a Time Machine back up and permanent media server for both mac and PC. What format do I need to partition the drive to so that it works for both mac and windows and so that it will be visab

I have partitioned my time capsule, as I want part of it to act as a media server for both mac and windows. However I don't know what format that I need to partition it to. I also can't make it a permanently accesible drive. I want to restore the drive to the original format (which I don't know) and start again and re-partition the drive in a format that can be used for media by both mac and PC and for time machine back-ups and make the media part of it permanetly accesible so I can add and acccess my files.
    Thanks

You are mixing up a couple of things here.
The TC drive cannot be partitioned without removing it.. did you do that?
If you partition it you must use a Mac disk utility and use the HFS+ ie standard Mac format. And GUID partition table not windows type.
You can select erase disk in the airport utility.. that will take the disk back to original format. No partitions. TC is deliberately not partitioned as it is not a media server.. it is a backup device for TM. Over time .. the disk will be filled with TM backups so you have a long history of file changes to your computer.
There is no media server in the TC.. it is merely disk storage.. you can serve files from it to a media device.. but the TC itself is dumb as dumb.
Now the actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. The TC offers SMB file services to the network. You can copy files to and from the TC as if it was a local disk without caring one iota about the format. The TC handles that .. it is not a local disk .. it is a network drive.
Although you cannot partition the TC. you can still copy files to it.. this does have implications for TM.. but as long as there is plenty of free space should not be a major issue.
You can create a disk image via the disk utility in a Mac.. and as stated you can create partitions if you do it on a Mac with the disk directly connected which means breaking warranty if any exists on the TC.

  • HT3275 Time machine at home and it will not allow me to remove the listing of my external hard drive from the excluded files list.

Please help guys, I have a Time machine at home and it will not allow me to remove the listing of my external hard drive from the excluded files list.
I am trying to use time machine to back up the hard drive. For backing up from Macbooik pro and Imac, there is no problem. It seems to not want to allow the external drive to be removed from the Excluded list and as such will not back up from it.
Is there a way to be able to transfer files (music, movies etc) to time machine, format the external drive then put the files back to hard drive?
Sorry it is a long winded question but it is driving me nuts that I cant sort this out.
The <Macbook and Imac are both running mountain lion.
    Thanks Guys

As for the hard drive to which you have never been able to write, is it by any chance in NTFS format? OS X can read NTFS for importing files, but it does not contain code for writing on an NTFS volume. That's a choice, not a bug.
There is third-party software available to install NTFS-writing capability into OS X. An example is Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X. Another alternative would be to use a disk format that both Macs and Windows systems can use for both reading and writing; this would require either a new drive or erase the existing data.
If by "the new system software" you mean OS X 10.9 Mavericks, you may want to repost that portion of your query in the Mavericks forum at https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/os_x_mavericks . I haven't made the leap yet.
I don't know what other problems you have been having, so I cannot comment on them. You don't seem to have any other recent postings on these forums.

  • I need to erase my hard drive and start anew, will time Machine(external drive) and all the discs I got with my computer be enough to restart things

I need to erase my hard drive and start anew, will time Machine(external drive) and all the discs I got with my computer be enough to restart things.  And secondly does RAM memory cards go bad.  Here's the info on my IMac:
    Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac6,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.16 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          4 MB
      Memory:          3 GB
      Bus Speed:          667 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          IM61.0093.B07
      SMC Version (system):          1.10f2

I need to erase my hard drive and start anew
Why do you feel you need to do this? That is such a 'Windows thing' to do!
And secondly does RAM memory cards go bad
Very rarely, but nothing in life is guaranteed (except death and taxes)! If you purchased RAM from a reputable source like Crucial or OWC it will carry a lifetime warranty.

  • Is it possible to reinstall Mac OS X Lion on MacBook and then use Time Machine to restore to the previous backup I made before reinstalling Mac OS X Lion?

Is it possible to reinstall Mac OS X Lion on MacBook and then use Time Machine to restore to the previous backup I made before reinstalling Mac OS X Lion?

My MacBook was not normally booting up. It would turn on, make the Apple startup noise, and the bottom loading bar would progress just a little bit, then my MacBook would shut down. I tried rebooting it many times and the same thing would happen, it would just shut down. Then, I read that I can reset the PRAM (by holding Option+Command+P+R after the Apple startup noise comes). That worked, but now I get a screen that asks me to choose one of the 4 options (see:  http://images.macworld.com/images/article/2012/07/lionrecoveryutilities-289404.j pg). I choose Restore From Time Machine Backup, but it progresses to 17.6% and gets stuck there forever. I tried doing it again, and it got stuck at 17.6% again. That is why I am asking if I should just reinstall Lion, then restore a previous backup on the fresh new Lion?
