If robber decides to activate iCloud on a registered iPod, will I be able to track it?

So, here's the deal. My iPod touch 5G was stolen on Friday night. I was at a concert and either the robber took it out of my bag without me realising (which I find rather difficult) or I accidentally dropped it from my bag and the person who found it decided not to give it back. I've been browsing several posts about losing a device and trying to find it, but it seems to be impossible without having activated iCloud. I took other measures such as reporting the device (with serial number) stolen to MacStores, so if the robber tries to get Tech Support, they will recognize it as a stolen device and let me know. By now, the iPod is for sure out of power and, therefore, off. I hadn't activated iCloud on the iPod (I had had it for only two weeks) but I do have it activated on my PC and the iPod is registered with my AppleID. So this idea came to my mind: let's say this person decides to keep the iPod and use it himself.  If this person decides to turn on iCloud, then will I be able to track it? Isn't the device linked to my Apple ID through the registration and, therefore, to my iCloud account? Or can a device be registered simoultaneously to more than one device?
I hope I was clear and that you folks can give me an answer
Cheers!

The thief would not urn on the find my ipod feature using your account.
It is gone.
Very sorry

  • Lost my iphone ios 7.2.0 with a pass code an iCloud activate the thing is who ever finds my phone puts it on DFU mode and restore it I'm aware he can do that but can't use it without my iCloud will I be able to track the phone if connected to wifi

Lost my phone it had ios 7.2.0 with pass code and I cloud  I'm aware it can be restore on DFU mode but can't use it if they don't have the iCloud user if and password the phones linked with. Question is in this process if the person connects it to his or her wifi to setup up the phone will I be able to track the phone after the restore ? Even though he can't use it because he has no Id no password

You can do nothing if it's not online. With a passcode and iOS 7.1 (there is no 7.2) the device is uselss because it cannot be erased except by you.
What To Do If Your iDevice or Computer Is Lost Or Stolen
    iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad
If you activated Find My Phone before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only if it is connected to the Internet by Wi-Fi or cellular. What you cannot do is track your device using a serial number or other identifying number. You cannot expect Apple or anyone else to find your device for you. You cannot recover your loss unless you insure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty.
If your iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should have done in advance - before you lost it or it was stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:

  • If I back up my iPod Touch using iCloud and then restore it, will I be able to get back all my photos, app data, etc?

About 5 months ago I was clearing up space on my PC. I had moved music that was in my music folder onto a USB and I thought that I could do the same with my iTunes Library folder onto my USB. But it wouldn't fit, so I moved it back. But when I went to back up my iPod it didn't recognize it anymore. I haven't been able to restore it anymore. Just until now I'm trying to see if I could back-up my data & photos to iClod and then Restore it, but I'm just a little unsure. Can anybody just reasure me that this will OR will not work.

I don't really think that you need to restore your device in order to sync it again with iTunes. I suspect all that you need to do is connect the device to iTunes and then accept it as a new device and choose the option to start syncing with that library.
Of course, it would be a good idea to back up to iCloud before you did this.

Post the exact error message, word for word.
    A screenshot would be best.

  • If I activate iCloud on MBAir do I lose contacts/phone numbers on my iMac running Snow Leopard?

Your iMac contacts/phone numbers won't be effected since it's running Snow Leopard.

When I try to activate iCloud on my new iPad it keeps telling me to check my email in order to verify my account. I never get an email though!
What do I do from there?

I eventually found the email in Trash! Is this because my email account is gmail?

  • HT204053 Activating iCloud on OS X 10.6.8 - iCloud does not show in System Preferences, and upgrading to more recent OS will slow computer. Can I activate iCloud on this device? It's the 2008 MacBook aluminum model.

I was told that upgrading the OS would slow down my machine significantly. I don't plan on using iCloud for anything other than setting up Find My iPhone. Any suggestions on how to activate iCloud with my current OS?

You would need to upgrade OS X to 10.7.5 (Lion) or later to sync your Mac with iCloud.  If you have 2GB of memory and 8GB of available hard drive space, you could upgrade to OS X Mavericks for free from the Mac App Store.  After upgrading, you can sign into your iCloud account in System Preferences>iCloud.
However, you don't need to do anything if you only need to use Find My iPhone.  To use Find My iPhone to track your iOS devices from a computer you go to icloud.com from your browser, sign into the iCloud account the device you want to track is using and click Find My iPhone.

It is used for syncing/pushing data to your other devices, and for backing up. It does not add to the physical capacity of your device.

  • RE: activate icloud?

Do I have to activate icloud on my iphone? Won't this use my data?  I do not have any other Apple products.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
iCloud is a sync service, if you don't have any other Apple products, there may be little reason to activate iCloud.
However, you can still use iCloud.com to access your calendars, mail, contacts etc on any mac/PC or locate your phone or lock it if lost or stolen, you can also use Photostream to sync photos to your own PC.
Whether these services are of any use to you, only you can answer.
