If someone plugs in my stolen ipod can I locate it or send a message?

I lost my 2007 ipod video in town yesterday. I was wondering if I could locate or send a message to the person who picked it up when its plugged into their computer and itunes loads up. I hope that whoever picks it up feels charitable and could return it.... its not exactly worth much cash

ah. Poop. Thanks anyway

  • HT201472 Stolen ipod, can't get anywhere with the support

My ipod touch was stolen in the week, and I haven't set up the 'find my iphone/ipod' setting on icloud yet.
Wanted to talk to someone about how to proceed, so went to the support area. All general topics were about use, clicked on 'other topic',
wrote in "stolen ipod", then it asks my to write in my serial number, which i can find on the device screen, only i can't because its been stolen!!
Can't seem to contact anyone without it, now totally stuck
I just want to freeze/wipe the device so no one can hack into my accounts

As you did not setup Find My iPhone or take a note of the serial number you can not locate or wipe the device now.

  • Replaced stolen iPod - can I delete the old registered one in iTunes?

I have three (3) 30GB iPod Videos (for me, my daughter, and son). My daughter's iPod was stolen a while back and we just replaced it.
I use the latest version of iTunes for Windows on my Windows XP system with one account to manage all 3 iPods' songs, games, and playlists.
Most of our music is from our own CD's, but we've purchased a dozen songs and a few games from iTunes. I have loaded the purchased songs and games onto all three of the iPods.
I have not plugged in the new iPod to my computer yet (I want my questions answered first before I proceed).
Are there any limits to the number of iPods you can download purchased music AND GAMES to from one account and one iTunes library?
If not, then I'll just plug in the new iPod and go on my merry way.
If there is a limit (and that limit is 3), then I'd like to delete/remove the stolen iPod's registration from iTunes before I plug in the new iPod, so that only my 2 remaining iPods and the new third iPod will be registered in iTunes.
Any guidance will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Sailor Guy

There are no limits on the number of iPods you can connect to your iTunes account. I'm currently loading three shuffles, two minis, and two nanos.
Don't worry about deleting info re: the stolen iPod--iTunes will not "remember" it, unless it's plugged into your computer.
    P.S.--I'm sorry for your loss!

  • Lost or stolen ipod:  can the finder turn off Mobileme?

I've searched the forums and can't find the answer; lots of lost ipod threads out there so maybe I've just overlooked it, though.  Apologies if so!  I don't have an ipod myself to fiddle with to find the answers.
My daughter lost her ipod touch, 4th generation yesterday afternoon (or possibly it was stolen?).  She did not have a security code required at the time it was lost.  She had the "Find my ipod" app installed, but it was two hours before she was able to get home to go on-line and a) add a message and b) add a security code.  We're assuming that at this point, if anyone tries to turn it on they'll get the message she posted with her phone number and they'll be locked out of using it since they won't have the security code, and hopefully we'll get some information as to its whereabouts.
However, what happens if the finder (or thief...?) turned it on during that two hour period before she had logged onto Mobileme to add the message/security code?  Could they have gotten into the Find my Ipod app and disabled it or turned it off?
Also, we live in a rural area where lots of people don't have wireless at home yet (yes, some people still have dial-up!).  I know that the Find... app requires wireless.  I assume, then, that no security code will be required if someone uses the ipod out of range of wi-fi?  And if they do so, and if the answer to the first question is "yes", then presumably they can just make sure that they're out of range of Wi-fi and go in and disable the Find... app?  or can that only be disabled from the mobileme website?
    Thanks for any info.

Thanks to everyone for your helpful information.  I really appreciate it!
Happy ending for my daughter:  someone turned her iPod into the school office this afternoon.
Strange ending for Mobileme, though, and not particularly confidence-inspiring:  even after the iPod was home and on-line, Mobileme continued to show "Location not available".  Mobileme is clearly finding it:  I just tested it by sending a message from Mobileme to the ipod, and it displayed immediately.  But it doesn't give any indication of a location.  I would have thought it might have at least displayed an IP address if nothing else, which would be helpful at least for telling whether it was at some known location (e.g. I can easily enough figure out what our IP address is at home, what the school's IP address is, and a few other locations like her cousin's house, grandparents' house, etc.  That wouldn't help much with a theft situation, but would surely help if it had been left somewhere.

  • Stolen iPod - Can I check if someone is buying music with it?

My iPod got stolen.  I read several posts about the subject.   Does iTunes know what S/N iPod is buying music?  I would think iTunes knows the iPod S/N.  And if someone is buying music with my iPod from iTunes I could at least track down the name from the iTunes account?   Does APPLE offer information on whether or not someone is still buying info from my iPod?
    Thanks for the help.

Music can't be bought from an iPod classic. It's done from a computer and then synced to the iPod classic, which doesn't transfer any information relating to the iPod to Apple.

  • Lost/stolen iPod - Can you track serial number to current owner/thief?

Recently I have either lost or had my iPod stolen while traveling across country. I had a brand new 30GB - Black iPod that disappeared from Point A to Point B. I took a red-eye, so either could have easily happened given the delays, weather conditions and tight connections experienced on this particular trip.
Is there a way to search for the Serial Number via the internet for recent downloads from iTunes, etc...?
I have replaced my 30GB with an 80GB and Nano, but would love to have it back to give to my wife or son.
Any suggestions on how to recoop or track down?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I used to work at an Apple Store and we were asked about this a lot. The other responses are correct, there is no way to track an ipod by Serial Number. The SN isn't recorded when you download items from the itunes store, that goes by your user account.
Now, if the person who has your ipod sets up an itunes user account (and doesn't lie about their information - don't forget you can go to the store and buy an itunes giftcard and it won't require a credit card to make a purchase) and also registers the ipod under their name (and doesn't lie about their information) there MIGHT be a way for Apple to track it down. But, honestly, that involves a lot of work and the assumption that the new user hasn't faked any of their personal information. Do you think they're going to do that for you? Probably not.
Sorry about your loss but all the SN is good for on an ipod is tracking warranty and repair information.

  • I wiped my stolen iPod, can the person that took it get the information back through iCloud?

He had all of my passwords. I changed my appleID and the password. He was using my iPod to get into accounts like emails and Facebook and was somehow getting all incoming and outgoing text messages from my phone from 1600 miles away. I just want to know if I have to change my phone number in order to be rid of the issue.

I misstated Leo's role, I should have said Leo's story regarding Mat Honan's experience with a remotely wiped Mac - and the circumstances leading to it being wiped by someone not its owner.
Point being that Honan stopped the wipe operation by disconnecting from his home network when he discovered it was being wiped. It may have stopped the wipe operation, the report on Apple's forensic effort to recover the portion that was not wiped has not been reported. But that was a MacBook, not an iPod. All iOS (pod, pad, phone) devices store their data with on-the-fly encryption, so if the wipe was successful, it is gone.
Unless your thief can social engineer a way to access your iCloud account (refer to the hacked iCloud story) I'd say the chances are very close to zero.

  • If u report a stolen ipod can it take pictures everytime its turned on

    heeelp please

    Hi trefadavid,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has information on reporting a stolen product:
Reporting a lost or stolen Apple product
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2526
If you have lost or found an Apple product, please contact your local law enforcement agency to report it. Although Apple does not have a process to track or flag lost or stolen product, you can use My Support Profile to find a list of serial numbers that have been purchased or registered with your Apple ID.
    Cheers,

  • My mac book was stolen how can i locate it?

can some one help me to find my macbook pro ?it was stolen yesterday:(

I know someone who works for the police and (in the UK at least) they will not bother starting to investigate the loss unless they are PRETTY SURE they will find it - this will bring their 'detection rates' down and this statistic is unfortunately all they care about now.

  • Stolen iPad, can't find, but received a strange message today related to it...

I had my iPad either misplaced or stolen about 4 months ago. Today, I got a very strange message on my iPhone. It said that my email addresses were added to "Nabeel's iPad"!!!
I used the cloud to search for it, but couldn't find it. What other methods can I go about tracking it? I had a SoftBank 3G card in it, which is most likely why it was able to know it was connected to my account, but the cloud can't still find it. Please help me, I know someone has my iPad definitely now! Who should I call, how can I get it back!? Now whoever has it, has my email addresses which is definitely strange!

Apple (and no one else) can not assist (with serial number or iCloud) in finding a lost or stolen iPad.
Report to police along with serial number. Change all your passwords.

  • How can u tell if someone is tracking ur for and can read all your text and pic message from home computer

    Help

I think my wife has found a way too look at my iPhone from home computer she's got a history I had a blackberry and she did with it and it messed my phone up I'm having problems with my iPhone she calls when I'm on the Internet and just some comments she made knows too much I know she's looking from home computer just like too find how my battery don't last but when I'm home it last and my phone gets hot on the back I think when I get a email and text pic message it goes too her the too me lately when I send a pic or a text to my friend on group message some of the don't get nothing

  • Can't get mail to send hotmail messages

This has been slowly driving me mad since I made the conversion to Macs a few months back.
I've got the outgoing server set to smtp.live.com with authentication of password, using my hotmail account and password. I've tried ticking and unticking various boxes. Deleteing the account and the then entering again.  I've tried it on both my home broadband and Uni network.
I can receive mail with no problems but just can't send mail.
    smtp.live.com (Offline)
    Use default ports
SSL - tried both ticked and unticked
    authentication - password

Not sure what the default ports are, but take a look at:
    Outgoing Server = smtp.live.com
-Port 25 or 587 [Note: Preferred Outgoing is Port 587 instead of Port 25 since many ISP’s blocks Port 25 usage. Similar blocking can occur when using Port 25 in hotels or accessing via a WiFi network/hotspot]
-Outgoing Server Authentication = On(check the option)-Encryption/Authentication = SSL or TLS
    * Choose SSL for Windows Live Mail, Outlook 2003, iPhone, iPod Touch, Outlook Express and Vista’s Windows
