If while running windows on parallels...

let's say i get a virus while i'm on windows using parallels. will my mac be affected?

No as viruses are just codes that can destroy the OS they are designed to work on. They won't even know they are on a Mac hardware unless the virus is designed to run through Parallels. If Windows does get a virus the all you need to do is just reinstall Windows or delete the virtual machine.

  • How can I turn on the integrated bluetooth radio while running windows 7 through bootcamp?

I am running a partitioned windows 7 64-bit on my macbook pro. The integrated bluetooth radio is turned on while using the Mac OS, but not while running windows 7. How can I fix this?

Another way to do that is to turn on Verbose Mode and watch the processor IDs that are enabled. And/or open the kernel.log in Console and find the beginning of today's boot. You should see a list of "AppleACPICPU: ProcessorId=# LocalApicId=# Enabled" counting up to the number of processors your Mac could have. For example, I've got one CPU but the Mac could hold two. Each CPU has six processors and each processor has two threads, so the kernel.log shows ProcessorId 0 to 11 having LocalApicId's enabled and 12 to 23 having LocalApicId's disabled (because the second CPU isn't installed).

  • Word for Mac and Boot Camp, can I run Word for Mac while running Windows?

    Hi There :
I just installed windows xp on my mac book pro. I have Word for Mac already installed. Is there any way by which I can use this Word software while I am running Windows.
    Thanks a lot

You'd need to install a virtualization product, such as VMware Fusion or Parallels Desktop for Mac. This way, you'd be running Windows alongside Mac OS X. I use VMware Fusion and recommend it. For resource-intensive applications, I boot natively into Windows, but I generally use the virtual machine for convenience sake.

  • Can I use a USB Windows Keyboard w/my iMac while running Windows in Paralle

I have an iMac with Parallels and Windows 7. There's this one DOS program that I have to use for work, and it requires use of the function keys on a Windows keyboard. I know I can remap the keys on the bluetooth keyboard that came with my iMac, but just for simplicity, can I just go buy a USB Windows keyboard and expect that the function keys will work with this program?
I don't know if the fact that OSX is running behind the scenes might prevent the function keys from being passed along to Windows and the DOS program.
    Thanks!

VM will often 'disable' and not function with keyboard function keys as they would normally running Windows natively.
That was one of my reasons for abandoning Fusion. All I could have and use was a "generic" keyboard and mouse, when the MS drivers in Windows I would have a lot of really handy useful keys for doing things.
And I use MS keyboards for years, in OS X and then in Windows.

  • Hello - Running Windows w/ Parallels.

I am hoping someone can help me -
I got Parallels 9 + 64bit Win 8, in hopes of playing COD Ghosts.
    My machine is a mid 2013 Macbook Air 13", w/ 8gb RAM, 2.7 Ghz i5 Processor
In Parrellels I when I have the allocated RAM set to 4GB (within the recommended spectrum) COD would not launch, saying I don't have the min requirements. After I looked up that the min requirement was 6GB, I think set the allocated amount to this, and tried it.  Same outcome. I see all of these YouTube vids of people playing the game fine.  What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks for your help -
    Josh

Parallels is not for games. The video has to go through the other operating system and you know what that result will be. What you need to do is install BootCamp. When you do that it should install the appropriate drivers for your ATI. Parallels is still good to have around so you don't have to shut down the Mac in order to run Windows.

  • HELP! Restarted while running windows setup! No MacOS when rebooted.

I have almost the same problem as this one (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8248433). I partitioned my 230G HD. I partitioned 32G for my windows. I've done boot camp before and everything went well. but i uninstalled it because I wanted more space. and now i ant it back. So i ran bootcamp to reinstall windows.
There was the setup.. but when it made me choose which partition to format, it only showed me one partition. And i first thought that it was big for a windows partition. But I clicked format anyway. It was about 6% when I felt that something was really wrong. so i restarted it in the hopes of going back to my mac os. BUT, when i restarted and held down control, the only things that are showing are the windows CD and the windows 'partition'! NO MAC OS!
I was confident in running bootcamp because i already did it countless times before! i did not expect this to happen NOW! Just when the school year was about to end! HELP! ALL MY FILES ARE IN HERE! I feel that I still have hope. because only 6% was reformatted. PLEASEEEEEE. HELP!

I am a person with zero technical understanding of OS X but - on the opposite hand - have blundered my way successfully through a lot of problems.
I see you have already used BC successfully once and so you have good experience there. I cannot comment on the extra large partition mystery you encountered, but I understand that you DID use BC to initiate a 2nd install of Windows, correct? And while installing Windows, Windows had you choose a partition but offered limited selection, correct? That is it only showed you one instead of the usual 2 (or is it 3? - I forget but it seems to me there is a 3rd partition of very small size required by the computer but that is of no consequence here...) In any case what we have was a suspicious start of a Windows install which was aborted 6% in.
I'm pretty sure the "damage" would have to be confined to a small part of the hard drive data. Your files are still there - you are scared of losing your Mac data (not Windows data) correct? On these boards there are a few individuals who purchased software that is very successful at saving files from a doomed Mac hard drive - just do a search here to get the name of that software.
But first - why not try something very simple and obvious. Boot to your Apple install disk (re-start with the Leopard DVD in and hold down the option key) and when the tool bar loads (I think after you choose which language you intend to use) mouse-over the toolbar options and click the Start Disk function JUST TO SEE if MAYBE your Mac install can be 'seen' (and started) from there.
If the above trick fails - another potential remedy may be had from Disk Utility and perhaps some sort of repair can be done from there....
I invite anyone with better knowledge to chime in here - I don't know anything about repairs from Disk Utility, esp. whether or not experimenting here would be dangerous or damaging to data....
    Good Luck
PS - one final "remote" idea - some people obtain a Linux trial boot disk. It is a Linux OS on a DVD which - legend has it - can boot from your DVD drive and access files on your Mac install. Again - I have no practical knowledge on how this is done. Try Google I guess...

  • Memory Limits while running Windows

Anyone know if the new MacPro tower can utilize more of the RAM when running Windows XP in BootCamp?

    HI,
got a similar issue. I am using a proprieatary app that only runs on windows. When installed XP, I can only see 2GB out of the 3GB I have installed.
People think it is a windows limitation. it is not. Windows can recognise up to 3GB out of 4GB. The actual limit is that one application can not use more than 2GB. That is true.
Anyone has experience with the new macrpo and succedeed in getting memory correctly recognised ?

  • While running windows updates KB2971850 and KB3000850, error 80070002 appears.

    Original post
here. Was told to post in this forum.
    Both KB2971850 and KB3000850 fail.
Running Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64 bit.
    Steps tried:
     - Log on as Administrator
     - Stop Windows Update Service and clear SoftwareDistribution\Download and DataStore.
     - Perform clean boot by disabling all startup and all non-MS services
     - Download and run WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab
     - Download standalone installers for each KB update
Absolutely nothing works. Looks like other people have had the same error however one of the above steps always seemed to fix it.
    Can anyone help?

    Hi Gardnerp2,
You can follow these steps to troubleshoot this kind of issue:
You can't install updates in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2

  • Macbook pro running windows 7 parallel vpn works in windows and not mac

I recently purchased a macbook pro. My medical management software runs in windows. I installed the software on the mac using parallels. If I'm at my home network/office I can access the server/program. When I try to access the vpn outside the network it won't work.

Parallels is supossed to be loaded on Mac OS platform and then you load Windows 7 on Parallels. The VPN is also supposed to be loaded on the Parallels platform. The VPN is not supposed to be on the Mac platform.
If you need to run the VPN on the Mac platform then you have to edit the set up of it because it is not the same as running in Windows. You'll have to ask your IT person about using the VPN on the OS X.

  • Mini-DVI while running windows xp

Ive just recently put windows xp on my system via bootcamp and ive been trying to figure out how to get it to go on an external display, the closest ive gotten is a sideways half of a picture, what should i change on the settings so that its a mirrored image from my macbook screen, My moniter is a 26 inch westinghouse 720p. thanks alot guys

Did you use the Leopard install disk to install the correct windows software. Once you have windows running you insert the disk and it should install the drivers needed to run correctly.

  • General Protection Fault in module WIN87EM.DLL while Running Windows XP Mode

I am attempting to run a legacy, 16-bit program, P3, on a Windows XP Mode Virtual Machine, hosted by a Windows 7 x64 box. When performing various activities in the program, I receive "P3 caused a General Protection Fault in module WIN87EM.DLL
at 0001:02C6." This occurs on multiple platforms (Core i5, Core 2 Duo).
Based on my research, I have found "The Windows 80x87 emulator library,
WIN87EM.DLL, works at the 16-bit-Windows level
to virtualize the coprocessor among multiple Windows-based applications that run inside the system VM."
It appears to me that, with the Virtual Machine using a Virtualized Processor (not related to the above reference to "virtualized coprocessor") as opposed to an emulated processor, the Virtual Math Coprocessor Device (VMCPD) and/or WIN87EM.DLL
generate an error from the virtualized processor (perhaps they do no recognize it?)
In addition "When the kernel loads an application, it checks to see if floating-point hardware is present. If a coprocessor is not present, the kernel uses the
fixup records to replace the actual floating-point instructions with
Interrupt 3x calls to emulation code in WIN87EM.DLL."
I have found some information that points to "hiding" the math coprocessor from the Virtual Machine, so it doesn't go to the processor. This apparently can be achieved by using a program called WinFloat which includes a tool called HIDE87, which is suppose
to hide the math coprocessor from the kernal.
The issue I'm running into is, to properly achieve this, HIDE87 must be loaded before Windows. I have tried a couple techniques, but I think I'm doing it wrong. I have tried adding the HIDE87 program to the System32 directory and then adding
HIDE87 (just before autocheck autochk *) to BootExecute under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
    key.
For a little more info, when you run HIDE87 from the command prompt it reads "HIDE87: Int 11h hook installed (must reboot to remove)." The documentation says this is what needs to occur before Windows loads. You can find WinFloat here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/97265.
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

This link helped point me to winfloat to solve the very same issue with WIN87EM.dll crashing under Windows XP on VMware 5 for an old legacy Windows 3.1.  I thought I would mention that the original approach taken by tstock_sjc should work fine.   First
off, winfloat is a self extracting executable and we really don't want to run winfloat, but rather hide87.com which is a tiny TSR that is inside the winfloat archive.  When you run any DOS or Windows 3.1 executable, Windows XP first boots up (if one isn't
already running) a mini-MSDOS 5 environment called NTVDM.exe.   Just as with the original MSDOS, when the shell loads, it loads files similar to config.sys and autoexec.bat.   Of course, there are more restrictions on drivers and not everything
under MSDOS is emulated but nevertheless, it is a fairly good approximation of an MSDOS 5 environment.  The issue that tstock_sjc had was NTVDM.exe looks for %WINDIR%\system32\autoexec.nt and %WINDIR%\system32\config.nt instead of autoexec.bat
and config.sys.  If you extract hide87.com out of winfloat.exe and place it into the %WINDIR%\system32 directory and add a line like %SystemRoot%\system32\hide87.com to the end of autoexec.nt , NTVDM will indeed load this TSR before launching its emulated
copy of of Windows 3.1 (wowexec.exe).  When the 16 bit application is finally launched after wowexec.exe, the coprocessor is then masked.  It worked fine for me anyway (after applying changes and rebooting).  Under process monitor I could clearly
see NTVDM.exe reading autoexec.nt and hide87.com and the WIN87EM.dll GP fault went away.

  • Can the illuminated keyboard be activated on the Mac Book Pro while running windows in boot camp?

Illuminated ket board only works when in OS 10. When switched to windows 7 it will nit light. How do I get it on?

    Invalid B-tree node size
    Volume check failed.
I'll expand on the last post a little.
Disk Utility cannot repair that error.
If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility for the repair. I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy. Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand. It has repaired every little and big issue I have ever had with my three Macs.
If you have a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install will also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!
    Good Luck! DALE
    p.s. Here's a rewiew of DiskWarrior 4.
