If you buy an iPhone 4 in the US and move to Europe....

...once you've figured out how to unlock it, do you have to keep unlocking your phone to add more software? A friend of mine says he won't buy a US phone to unlock but rather one locally because it's a hassle to keep unlocking every time he wants to upgrade his software. True?

True?
Yes. You would have to unlock it after each iOS update you apply.

  • Buying iPhone 5 in the US and bringing to Europe: success.

    Hi,
In case any of you is wondering about iPhone 5 models and whether they work in Europe if bought in the US, I would like to share my successful experience:
You can buy a Verizon unlocked phone in an Apple Store in the US. Be prepared for the Apple Store person to be a little confused and ignore the "but that is not GSM" or "CDMA does not work in Europe".
Check and make sure that it is model A1429. Further check that it is a Verizon model [1]. This can be done by parsing one of the ends of the box with all the barcodes without having to open the plastic.
Not sure this makes a difference, but I replaced the stock Verizon SIM with my European SIM before activating in iTunes. <- Is this really needed?
The phone works with my European SIM in the US, UK, FR, and CH.
3G works without a hitch and the rates are much better than in the iPhone 3G.
Enjoy a >10% discount on a fully unlocked phone.
I have not yet tested LTE. From the table at http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/ the Verizon A1429 model supports a superset of the bands supported by the European A1429 model.
Feedback on point 3 and your experiences with LTE are welcome!
    [1] Verizon 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB models in black are MD654LL/A, MD658LL/A, and MD664LL/A. The white 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB models are MD655LL/A, MD659LL/A, and MD665LL/A.

    Hi!
I live in Norway and bought the Verizon iphone 5 (model a1429 written on back of the phone) and had to do specific things to get it working properly on LTE. (I am using the phone with a simcard from Norwegian carrier Telenor )
Step 1: Connect it to itunes via my laptop in order for the operator network settings to be updated (happened automatically).
After completing this task, I went to check Settings/General/Cellular on the iphone (For Norwegians: Innstillinger/Generelt/Mobilnett), and now (after updating operator network settings) I was able to enable LTE with the on/off button (prior to updating operator network settings I was not able to see any LTE button at all).
Nevertheless, my phone did not shift to LTE when I knew I was standing next to a LTE base station after completing STEP 1. It still only displayed 3G at the top of the screen.
Then I decided to do one more thing:
    2. I restored ( For Norwegians: Gjenopprette iphone) the iphone while connected to itunes (after backing it up offcourse).
Finally, after this the iphone started to connect to LTE. I do not know why one has to RESTORE the iphone before it starts to connect to LTE, but it worked.
So for anyone who does what I did (bought an iphone 5 in the US for use in Europe primarily). Most likely you will have to buy the iphone 5 for Verizon (a1429 cdma version) without a plan. Since the verizon cdma version covers all frequencies that are used in Norway, it will also work on LTE in Norway with a Norwegian operator sim card. You just have to update network operator settings and RESTORE the iphone afterwards as explained above....
(http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/ as the table in this link shows, if you are buying an iphone 5 in the US and going to use it in Europe with a European sim card, there is only one possibility, which is to buy the a1429 cdma version.

  • Is it possible to buy an iphone 5 in the states and take it back to another country for use?

Is it possible to buy an iphone 5 in the states and take it back to another country for use?

Apple has not yet announced the availability of unlocked iPhones in
the US, but they are for sale in Canada, parts of Europe, and elsewhere.
Warranty is not international. Service and repair/replacement only in
country of original purchase. LTE/4G may or may not work in other
country depending on bands and frequencies used.

    Hi, Chris.
I did some research and found that your answers are not completely accurate.
The T-mobile contract-free iPhone is already being sold, but it will take 7-10 business days to ship. And, as confirmed by Apple Specialists and also by people who have already bought it, it is factory unlocked.
Yes, there is a contract free T-Mobile phone, but it is not "the" unlocked phone which Apple will begin to sell usually 2 months or so from the release date. So my answer to that question is accurate. I specifically identified the T-Mobile phone, and a search of the forum would yield some responses identifying its inability to work in some locations. And again, it has to be the T-Mobile phone sold at the Apple store, not T-Mobile.

Regarding French LTE bands, they use 800, 1800 and 2600MHz, all of those supported by the iPhone 6.
While that statement is accurate, see Lawrence's response regarding how it works.

And finally, about the warranty, that is also something that should be checked country by country. Although Apple says its warranty won't cover products purchased abroad, some countries' laws require manufacturers to provided services under warranty to phones no matter where they were purchased. For example, since Apple has a branch in Brazil, justice here has repeatedly ruled in favor of customers  who needed service on iPhones purchased in other countries.
While that may be an example, the overall warranty statement by Apple is that warrant is specific to the country of purchase for the reasons that Lawrence states. Certain devices cannot be found in certain countries. Should I travel to Brazil and have a problem with my phone, they would have a very difficult time replacing a locked AT&T device. They would not have that stock.

  • If i buy an iPhone 4s in the uk, and send it abroad as a gift, will it still work with any sim card or will it need unlocking?

I basically want to buy an iphone as a gift, but i'm unsure if it will need extra unlocking in another country or will i be able to use it srtaight away if i have a sim card

If you buy an unlocked iPhone from Apple, it will remain unlocked.
Apple is the only source for unlocked phones in the UK.  Be warned, the phones sold at Carphone Warehouse are NOT unlocked. They will ONLY activate with a UK carrier and will lock to the first carrier used.

Hi guys I'm wondering that if you buy an iphone online and have paid got it and you've been using it can the seller get the phone blocked even though you own the phone and you have proof you bought the phone ?

Sorry, there is nothing you can do until the device is removed from the sellers Apple ID.
Without that, your device can't be used, check these articles:

  • I want to buy an Iphone 5s in the UK to use in Panama, any idea how to check which model I am buyin online? HELP!!!

    Hi,
I want to buy an Iphone 5s from the uk apple store online and I will be using it in Panama. I have contacted my carrier (Movistar Panama) and they have given me a list of the Iphone 5s models that will work with their network:
    Model A1533 (GSM)*: UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 13, 17, 19, 20, 25)
Do you know how can I get to know if I'm buying the right model from the online store?
    Thanks!

The A1533 model is sold only in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico. You will not be able to get that model in the UK.

  • If I buy an iphone 5 in the US (e.g. unlocked Verizon's version), can I use it in other countries such as Hong Kong?

If I buy an iphone 5 in the US (e.g. unlocked Verizon's version), can it be used in other countries such as Hong Kong simply by change the SIM card?
    Thank you!

I'm not sure why you think a Verizon phone is unlocked?  All iPhones sold in the US are carrier locked.

  • If I buy an unlocked iphone 6 in the uk and have a uk sim card in it initially, will i be able to use my german sim card in it when i'm in germany and return back to my UK sim card on my return?

If I buy an unlocked iphone 6 in the uk and have a uk sim card in it initially, will i be able to use my german sim card in it when i'm in germany and return back to my UK sim card on my return?

Yes. But make sure you buy it at an Apple Store. Other stores selling SIM free iPhones will sell those that will usually lock to the carrier whose SIM is used to first activate the phone. Then you will be stuck.

  • When you buy a iPhone from some can you set it up under straight talk?

If you buy a iPhone from someone can you set it up under straight talk?

Doubt it. The phone will probably be locked to a specific carrier and you will be out of luck. I suggest just buying one brand new instead of someone else.

Sorry , but product is iPhone 5S

You can't buy from the Apple store online in the US because it is country specific and you firstly need a US credit card and then a US address and they won't ship outside of the US so you can't.
No Apple online store will ship outside the coutry.
If you want an iPhone, then you'll have to order via the Russian Apple store online if there is one, or you'll have to wait until it is released in your own country or go and buy one in Europe.
