If you can figure this out, you're a genius

I made a short film 3 years ago, still have the MPEG 2 files. Burned fine on Studio Pro 3; now I have 4. Wanted to burn a new copy - tried the old MPEG 2. Around minute 8 the DVD broke up-frozen-dead. Tried another DVD player, same thing. Ok. No big deal. Dusted the tape off the shelf and captured it again. Made an MPEG 2 and burned to DVD. Again. Minute 8 - same thing, frozen, done. Lowered the bit rate from 7.0 to 5.0. Played up to minute 9. Lowered it to 3. Played to minute 11. Lowered it all the way to the bare bones, 2, plays the full 13 minutes and looks horrible. Took a bunch of old clips and made a 20 minute movie test, converted to MPEG 2 7.0 VBR. Plays all the way just fine. So why my movie? Is it that bad? Calling all geniuses. -ed

Thanks for responding. The 3 year old files were made back in the day when QT could export MPEG 2's. I used the same settings I always used, target bit rate 6.4ish max bitrate 7.5ish. 2 pass VBR. Best motion. These new MPEG 2's were made with compressor. I tried many different settings but the first one I used was: Average bit rate 6.4, Max Bit Rate 7.6, Motion Estimation BEST. 29.97fps, Bottom Field First, NTSC. I also then used the compressor built in to DVD SP. Those settings were, Field Order AUTO, One Pass VBR (I started running out of time) Bit Rate 5.0, Max Bit Rate 7.0, Motion Estimation Better. It was in DVDSP that I began lowering the Bit Rate until I was able to make a successful and crappy-looking DVD. The final settings were: Field Order AUTO, Mode: ONE PASS VBR, Bit Rate: 2.0, Max Bit Rate: 5.0, Motion Estimation: BETTER. Never used settings this low in my life! Looks like crap. -ed

The answer is both easy and frustrating.
    First the easy part.
    1. Add the videos to iTunes on the Mac (you did say from Mac to PC)
    2. If the video is a Music video, set the flag appropriately
    3. Tell iTunes on the Mac to share its iTunes library over the network
    4. Make sure either you share the entire library, or a playlist that includes the video(s)
    5. Set the PC to look for shared libraries on the network
The above is probably obvious and you have probably done this. The next bit is to address the cause of the problem.
First, I have various music videos acquired from different sources. Some from the iTunes Store before they started charging for them, some from other sites on the Internet. All are in QuickTime compatible format and hence all play locally in iTunes. However most of them do not work when I try and access them via iTunes Sharing.
Now I had a strong idea what the cause was but here are possible causes that could be considered
    1. Its the wrong format (even if it can be played locally), i.e. not MPEG4 or H.264
    2. Its the wrong pixel size or bit rate
    3. It did not have the "Music Video" flag set
    4. Its too long in duration or file size
    5. It has not been prepared for streaming
To put you out of your misery it appears to be number 5. Now I had already suspected this because I had previously seen reports that FrontRow (on a Mac) had problems playing videos from another Mac if the video had not been prepared for streaming.
I have found two reasonably easy ways to convert videos so they are prepared for streaming.
    1. If you have QuickTime Pro (for Mac or Windows) you can export the video using the QuickTime Player and in options in the export dialog box, set it to enable the streaming option.
    2. If you select the video in iTunes itself, you can tell iTunes to convert it to iPod or AppleTV format, this will at the same time also set the streaming option
I tested both methods using a video that previously would not work between Mac and Windows iTunes sharing and both these solutions worked. This was tested using iTunes 7.4.2 on Mac OS X 10.4.10 and iTunes 7.4.2 on Windows XP Pro.
I look forward to receiving your cheque for $100,000,000

  • I Paid For 3 Years Of Apple Care And Nobody Can Figure This Out...

    http://vimeo.com/10417687
This is what my monitor started doing within a few weeks of owning it. I'm going on 2.5 years now. Just had a tech come to my house for about 4 hours trying to figure it out. Apple wants nothing to do with it. I've called them many times and have always been told to call them back and never get beyond that. Apple looked at this video I posted and maybe got scared? lol. I have no idea. I think they should just get rid of the problem already as I work at home and have lost allot of $ because of this issue.
    Why can't anything be done?

    Hey, Apple.
Please do the right thing here and help out. 2.5years of this! With Apple "Care". Why do you keep talking with me on the phone telling me you'll look into it and then never getting back to me? Every time I call you guys tell me the exact same thing and nothing gets done.
I have the calls recorded on Skype. Do I have to make them public on youtube along with this situation in order to get anywhere?
Please give me the service I paid for.

  • $5 to anyone that can figure this out

Under Podcasts in Front Row - it shows ones that I deleted YEARS ago from an older Mac that I migrated to this one. I have searched through Spotlight and everywhere else to find the file with no luck. THe only thing I can figure is it is pulling from an old playlist but can't find that either. Please help!!

Front Row, of course, is totally dependent on your iTunes library. Take a look at the following support article. You may want to try rebuilding your iTunes library and see if that fixes your issue.

  • Let's see who can figure this out =]

    Okay,
I have a broken ipod 4G 20GB model. It displays a sick icon. It will not go into diagnostics mode. It is not seen by itunes or my PC (windows xp OS). When it is plugged in the charge icon shows up, but it does not move.
So basically I can't do anything to it with my computer or with the buttons on the ipod, so I think I will have to take it apart to fix it, as I'm not going to send it back as the warranty is over.
I don't mind erasing everything on it, and I would if I knew how to, and I will try just about anything so I can make it atleast an external hard drive.
If anyone knows what I should do once I take it apart, what part is most likely wrong with it, if they know some way to fix it, or have any questions... please post =].
    Thanks for your help.

    I have fixed it!!!
I was in the middle of prying open the case and the Ipod flew out of my hands and landed on the concrete floor, and then I looked at it and it had turned on. The hard drive was humming but I turned it on and off and it fixed.
If your ipod is broken just smash it on the floor... Apple add that onto your repair checks =D. (I'm not responsible if it doesn't work for you)
Thanks for all of your replies (sarcasm ^^)

  • WHY!!!!! I can't figure this out

Why my girlfriend is getting the message that her "remote IP address is invalid" I can't seem to understand or figure this out...

They should turn off Internet Sharing in System Preferences > Sharing if it is On
Are either of you running Internet Sharing? If so, turn it off.
They should not be letting Parallels connect using the Mac's IP if they run Parallels.
Do either of you use Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion to run windows on you Mac? If so, turn off their access to the internet in their settings or preferences.
They should not be connected to the Router via wireless (Airport card) and Wired (Ethernet) at the same time.
Are either of you connected to both Ethernet port and Airport wireless at the same time. If so, disable one of the network configurations. Either unplug the cable or turn Airport off.
They should not have two DHCP servers in a modem and router on their LAN.
How are your router and modem configured. If they are both distributing IP addresses, then you need to either set your router to bridge mode or set the modem to assign just one IP address. I don't know what hardware you have, so I can't begin to tell you how to configure either. Unless it is an Airport Base Station, most modems and routers are configured through a Web interface. Airport Utility will let you configure the Airport Base Station.

Hi, I had been having the same problem for over a week, but both my window's HP and my 2011 macbook pro barely could load youtube.  What kind of router you have?  I was using a belkin play router that was only 8 months old, switched to a new AirPort Extreme Base Station and now everything works perfect.

  • How can I figure this out?

Very simple function, but as a beginner, it's still difficult for me.
my mouse wants to detect boxes on the canvas and return the center coordinate of these boxes, how can i figure this out? The game will be, if point(x,y) is inside a box , return box Center

I just noticed that you are placing them on Canvas and it is not a container object. One solution would be to keep track of boundaries of those clickable areas and whenever a click occurs, a check which box was clicked, if any. I hope this helped.

  • So i have an apple ipod touch 1st generation and it is not charging! It shows the charging sign but its taking a really long time to charge. Ive had it charging for at least 3 hours and it still says under 20% so can someone help me figure this out??

  • Can't figure this out- cable connection vs wifi connection

Can't figure this out: when my 13" MBP is connected wirelessly to my Airport base station, my iPad can see it. When I connect the MBP to the base station via ethernet cable (for faster connection), the iPad can no longer see it.
Note: my airport is not connected to the internet. I'm simply wanting to setup a closed network for the iPad to connect to the MBP. There's nothing else on the network. The app on the iPad is locating the MBP by ip address so it must be a permanently assigned number.

    Am having the same problem.
Everything was working fine until yesterday.
Now if I connect my iMac to the Extreme with Ethernet the Airport is not visible and I can't connect to the internet.
iPods and iPhones can still use the wifi to get on the internet.
If I switch the iMac to Airport it works, but, will not work with the Ethernet cable connected.
Have tried changing ethernet cables and still no go.
    Can't figure this out.
