  • How do You Deactivate the Master Password

I have the Master Password for opening Firefox activated, and now I would like to Deactivate it, so I don't have to continue entering a Password before the Firefox window can open.

Did you install an extension that asks for the Master Password or do you use Firefox Sync?
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

    Please Help

    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you are unable to boot from an installer DVD:
(these will only work on Leopard or earlier)
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down
the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each
          command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command
until you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK"
message, then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
Reset Admin Password Using The Terminal
You can reset the password by printing out (or writing down) and carefully following these steps.
First, find the short name of the admin user on the machine. The easiest way of doing this is by looking at what the directory is called in the Users folder.
Now, start in Single-user Mode. It should boot into a command line.
Enter these exact lines. Press RETURN after each.
    mount -uw /
    ifconfig lo0 up
    cd /var/db/netinfo
    netinfod -s local
Now you'll need that short name. Enter "passwd", a space, and the short name of the admin. For example, if the admin was rather prosaically called "imadmin", you would enter "passwd imadmin".
The computer will now prompt you to change the password for "lmadmin" (or whatever the short name was). Go ahead and enter a new password.
    Now, enter:
    sync
    reboot
and the machine will reboot. The admin password should now be changed.

  • I tried to sign up for your password saving system the other day. In doing so I had to create a master password. I now have lost the master password--it wouldn't accept most of my choices--and now I'm locked out of many of my websites.

keep on getting the message Password Required--please enter master password for security software security device.
    I have a MacBook pro 10.6.8

    See:

If you reset the master password then you lose all stored passwords.
You can try to use the Time Machine to restore both key3.db and signons.sqlite to versions when you didn't had the master password.

  • How do you re-set the master password without knowing what it is?

I set up a master password, and can't remember it.  I haven't activated the filevault, so from what I read, that is good.  But I still don't know how to re-set the master password if I don't have the old one to change it.  Please help.  I have too many albums in iTunes, documents, and calander events that have not been backed up, so I don't want to reinstall the software, if that is an option.  At least not until I can pick up an external backup.

I forget where I read this, but to eliminate an existing filevault "master password", delete the files 'FileVaultMaster.cer' and 'FileVaultMaster.keychain' in your computer's main '/Library/Keychains/' folder (not through "Keychain Access.app"). You should then be able to set a new "master password" in the "Security" preference pane if you ever decide to use "filevault" again. Note that if you do this while an account is still encrypted (ie. with filevault enabled), that account will not be accessible with the new "master password".

If you were to forget your master password-what can you do? is there a way to start a fresh? like wipe the computer to revert it to its original state of purchase?

  • Hi, I can't put a pontuaction mark in a password to acess one of my accounts (I can't remember the master password, so I can't change the previous one). MacBook Pro 10.6.8 Could you please help me?

Hi, I can't insert a pontuaction mark in a password (which I did until yesterday) to acess one of my accounts. I don't remember the master password, so I can't change that one. I have a MacBook Pro and 10.6.8. Could you help me, please.

What I'd do in this situation:
connect both macs to same LAN
    turn them on
    login to new mac
go network, find your old mac
connect using "connect as" button (up right of window)
use credentials from login you can't access - mean user name and password. If you still can't add that ~ you can copypaste password there from any text editor
You will get full access to all data of that blocked account - just copy all you need
    Other way:
connect both macs to same LAN
    turn them on
    login to new mac
on new mac run "migration assistant" from Utilities folder
tell there that you want import account data from other mac
    follow instructions of migration assistant
thus you'll import account to new mac - but probably with filewault enabled and same password, I didn't check this in such situation
    Try first method first )

  • What do you do if you've forgotten the master password for reset and you've thrown out the gift reciept? HELP??????????

How do you reset the iPad if you've forgotten the master password and threw out the gift reciept?

Contact the person that gave it to you.  See if they have a receipt.
Apple doesn't use the term master password.
There are two different locking mechanisms:  passcode, prevents access to your data,  and activation lock, prevents use of device if stolen.  You do not want the students setting the activation lock.
If the passcode is set & forgotten , you can reload from backup or wipe ( first typed whip ) the device.
iPhone or iPad locked from incorrect passcode.
If you enter the wrong passcode six or more times, you'll see a message that says Ipad is disabled.
See how to restore from backup.  No back up on your computer, click on the triangle before "If you have never synced your device with iTunes, or you do not have access to a computer"
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1212
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1212
The problem arises when someone sets the activation lock which is set by logging onto your apple id then setting the appropriate option.   DEP is the preferred preventative.  It established your organization as the owner.  The student cannot set an activation log.

  • I did not forget my master password - but the app kept asking for it

I am not editing the question although your website seems not to "understand it" - I wrote it down and so far the application (?) has not offered to remember anything.
There was a time before I installed Version 12 - when I was ASKED if I wanted it to remember - all the device asks for is my master password
I am recently become a user of FF12 and I have also Personas and the Personas Manager - but that fails sometimes to work and it does not change the picture - then I have to SIGN in ALL over again
Any advice would be welcomed and gratefully received
    Patricia Francis-Wilson aka patriciaenola

If you create a master password, each time you start Firefox, it will ask you to enter the password the first time it needs to access a certificate or stored password (copied from [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/security-and-passwords-settings?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Options+window+-+Security+panel#w_passwords Passwords - Use a master password] )
    thank you

  • How2 REMOVE the Master Password ?

Master password looks good but how to disable / remove it ?

    What do you mean?
The Master Password is the backup password for FileVault. Why would you want to remove it? You don't necessarily need to set one, but if you activate FileVault and forget your login password, the MasterPassword is the only way to access the data encrypted by FileVault.
Figure it makes more sense in a network environment where a user (employee) forgets his/her password and needs the admin (IT guy) to reset it.

  • Please help me get my laptop back someone has cracked the master password and is running multiple operating systems which I have no access to

Okay so I am not a computer expert by any means and have no clue how to fix my system. My father worked for intel for over 20 years as an engineer I asked him to restore my laptop to its original factory state and instead he cracked the master password
installed multiple operating systems and made himself the administrator or domain controller. Many features and options I do not have access to so reading the trouble shooting and going through the steps always leads me to a dead end. The laptop is TOSHIBA
SATELLITE L875D-S7332 a6 VISION AMD WINDOWS 8. As far as I can see my profile is actual running a version of windows 7. I do see reference to a windows 8RT windows 2003 windows vista wow64 and 32 I don't know what all that means I would just like to know how
wipe everything and get back to the factory condition I bought it in. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated

Do you have Win 7 installation disk? If yes, then go ahead and format the laptop if you don't need any data. If you need the data it it, then copy the same to USB disk and format it. Removing OS and deleting these things will anyhow keep some remains on
HDD. TO get the speed and performance back, you might need a fresh installation.

  • How do i change the master password on lion

hi, i know the master password on my macbook pro but i would like to change it and since i upgraded to lion i cant a optionto change it any where.
    Macbook Pro osx 10.7
    FileVault Is ON

If you are referring to the Master Password that is used for the "old" version of FileVault (not your regular login password),  it looks like it's now in System Preferences>Users and Groups.
Click the little "gear" icon under "Login Options":
I don't use FileVault, but I assume that this has nothing to do with the "Recovery Key" that you are given if you enable the new version of FileVault.
