If you replace raid controller of hardware raid do you have to rebuild raid from beginning or not?

hi,
I like to know if the raid controller is damaged and you replace it with a  raid card in a PCI slot .do you have to rebuild the raid from begin if it is hardware raid ?
the same  question I ask for software raid ? this question is for raid 0,1,5,6,ect.
if you have to rebuild  from begin then it means if you don't have good back-up then the data is gone!
thanks

Hello,
Enterprise controllers will read the metadata of the array, as it's stored on the disks, and recognize the configuration. Then you and you can choose to 'mount' it or create
a new array.
But, I suggest you to go to the manufacturer of the controller and get detailed information for scenarios like that.
For software raid, the only experience I have is that Windows can recognize a set of drives when they are configured as Dynamic Disks.

so my pre-unibody mbp has a faulty video card. i'm told it needs to be replaced. is it true that having the video card replaced involves replacing the motherboard too?

If I may chime in, if you are a heavy photoshop user-the 13" is already not an option.  15" or 17" depending on your budget. You need the i7 processor and upgrading to 8gb ram wouldnt hurt either.  But dont get the ram from Apple..way overpriced.  See here: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/1333DDR3S08S/. 8gb for $60-cant go wrong with that! And a lifetime guarantee.

  • Shopping For A RAID Controller

I have seen the Areca brand name on here many times, so I assume they are the best for what we do. But, there are so many models that I have no idea what to look for. I probably won't ever have more than 4 or 6 storage drives plus an SSD system drive. Maybe a couple of external drives and an NAS.
    If I have Windows 7 64-bit
    i7-2600k processor
    ASUS P8P67 Pro motherboard
    32 GB RAM 1600
GeForce GTX 580 Amp! from Zotac
    AX850 PSU from Corsair
Every component is reasonably fast, bu I am sick of the senseless limitations of this mootherboard. My drives are aging so they need to be replaced.
Which specs are important for video editing? Which brand and models are most popular and shoould I wait for some new release?
Another thought - If a RAID controller is over $400 US, Is it more cost-effective to upgrade to a more capable motherboard/processor with all the ports I need?

    What to look for
    Brand
    Areca or LSI
    Ports
    8 or more
    Card
    PCIe-3.0 8x
    Cache
    512 MB or more
    Multi-lane
    SFF-8087/8088
    Examples
Areca ARC-1882 series or LSI MegaRAID 9285
Warning: You have to realize that on your motherboard adding a dedicated raid controller will entail that your video card will throttle down from PCIe-16x to PCIe-8x mode, resulting in a 10 - 15% performance penalty, due to limitations of the chipset. A dedicated raid controller, especially with around 6 disks always outperforms an on-board raid by a wide margin. To see some benchmark results, look here:  Reflections
To see what meets your requirements, also consider the raid level you want to use. If raid3 or raid30, then LSI is out. You can check out what controllers are popular here: Detailed Results but you have to be registered and logged in to access the page.

And how can i get into the bios of second raid card.
P.S.  card is installed in Windows XP fine.  i can see two hard drives connected to it.  Right after raid bios on onboard raid it looks windows.

    Thanks for your help.
It sounds like you are booting from the promise RAID controller.  If so, you are well familiar with the way in which it dominates the bootup process for the first 30 seconds or so.........(dots look familiar?...)
I wonder if the second RAID card is also initiating its bios sequence at the same time underneath the Promise boot screen (underneath, so to speak) so that when the Promise routine is finished, so is the CMD routine, and you proceed from that point with both RAID controllers initialized (but can only see one of them at a time from the bios screen.)
Do you you have "boot from other device" enabled in the bios?  If so you might try disabling that to see if it will sequence the RAID controllers initialization so that the CMD bios appears after the Promise bios is done (I assume you have the onboard Promise array selected as the boot device.)
A bit more trouble would be to reboot to main bios,  disable the onboard RAID controller in the bios, save and reboot.  At this point the Promise bios will not display and you should see a CMD bios display which you could manipulate--then reenable the Promise controller to boot, etc.  If you disable the Promise controller and you still don't see a bios for the CMD RAID device you need to look elsewhere.  Also, it might be that the CMD bios access requires a certain key sequence pressed during post to display?....Just some random thoughts...

  • HP MSA2312sa G2 RAID Controller Replacement

I have recently noticed that 1 of 2 RAID controllers on a HP MSA2312sa G2 Modular Smart Array has failed.  Everything failed over to Controller A which is still healthy so all is still up and running.
However my question is whether I can hot swap the failed RAID controller with a new one or if I have to shut the unit and all attached hosts down to do the hardware replacement.
Any help is appreciated as this is a one off device that I don't have much experience with.

  • XServe Raid Controller Replacement

My XRaid runs fine, then shows a fault on one of the two RAID controllers. The other takes over, and everything works as far as serving files, but the array attached to the RAID controller with the fault will not allow files to be written or created. Reading is fine.
If I reset the controller, shut down the XServe (intel), then reboot the XRaid, all functionality is restored. I'm figuring that I need a replacement RAID controller. Anyone have a good source for the RAID controller? Or a better long-term solution?
    Thanks!

    Hi
You should still be able to order replacement/exchange parts for the XServe RAID via Apple Service or GSX. If you go to your nearest Apple Repair Centre/Specialist with the XServe RAID's Serial Number they should be able to quote for a replacement/exchange?
Are you sure it's not the FC Cable itself? Have you tried swopping the cables? Do you have another cable you can try instead? Have you tried re-seating the Controllers? Shutdown the RAID, remove the kettle leads, remove the affected controller. If you have a can of air give the inside a good blast and insert the controller.

  • Had to replace Xserve RAID controller and now I get Xsan Admin: ERROR: duplicate LUN label RAID1-Left1

I need some help, I had one of my five Xserve RAID boxes fail. The upper controller card needed to be replaced and so we replaced it. But now only one of my volumes is loading and I am seeing the following error in my Console.
7/18/12 9:23:18.550 AM Xsan Admin: ERROR: duplicate LUN label RAID1-Left1
This raid box holds three LUNs. the left is split into two with one being the metadata / Journal for the main volume and the 2nd being the same for my secondary volume. The right side of this box is the second volume while the remaining 4 RAID boxes are my main volume. Here is the rub, the main volume is using the left1 LUN and the secondary is left2. The left2 is the one that is not working and when I go into the LUN info the WWN number does not match the actual id on the raid box.
    HELP!!!!
    Thanks,
    Kevin Rosenthal

Did you try turning it off and on again? I mean, the full SAN shutdown/startup: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4027
You're probably seeing "duplicate LUN labels" because the MDC has seen two LUNs with the same label but different serial numbers since it has been online. The serial number (which I think is based off the WWN) would have changed when the RAID controller changed. A reboot should fix that specific error message.
If the volume still doesn't start after rebooting, then you would want to check the cvlog for that volume.

  • Hard drives do not detect after enabling hardware raid controller

    hello every one
I have 2 hard drive and want to make them RAID 1.after enabling raid controller in bios, when I want to install windows server 2012,it says no hard drive detected.when I load driver of raid,it dont work.i used "list disk" and "diskpart"
command in command prompt to show my online disk drive, but it does not show any hard drive.I think hard drive are in offline mode.how can I enable them?hard drive are sata 1T.
    atiye moghaddam

    Hi,
As RAID is enabled on motherboard, the configuration should be finished in BIOS as well. So the RAID1 should be already configged before installing Windows system.
When boot with an installation CD, you should have an option like "load driver for hard disk" or so. RAID will not be directly recognized so you should use that option to install a driver first.
If it will not work, contact motherboard manufacturer for more support on this function.

  • Unknown Raid 5 Array after Raid controller replaced

    Hello,
I had a raid controller fail during the week, and after shutting the xraid down and installing the new controller, all the drives in the array are now amber.
In Raid Admin 1.5 the array does not show up, only all 6 member drives with an amber warning and 'Type: Unknown Array'.
I used the 'Recognize Array' utility to try and fix this, however whilst each drive shows as being recognized as being part of a Raid 5 set, it will not recreate it.
Am I completely screwed? or is there some other way to get this to repair/recognize?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Mark

Due to time restrictions on getting the xraid back online, had to recreate the raid and restore data from backup.
    No fix found.

  • Hardware RAID Controller

    Hello,
Can someone tell me if there is ANY available RAID controller for Sparc platform, specifically E servers? I can't find anything anywhere on this, but it seems such a gaping hole I'm surely missing something. Anything equivalent to the myriad of controllers available from Adaptec, Compaq, Mylex, etc. on Intel? 3-rd party maybe?
    thx

Which "E server"? Sun sells the SRC/P RAID controller
on a PCI card. It was not qualified on all servers, so
it is difficult to answer your question specifically.

  • Had to replace Xserve RAID controller and now I get Xsan Admin: duplicate LUN label RAID1-Left1

after we replace the controller volumes are mounting. Any advice on what to do with the duplicates?

Try reconnecting to the Xsan by closing the window in Xsan Admin, clicking "disconnect", then File -> New -> Connect to existing SAN. If you still see the duplicate LUNs after reconnecting, try shutting everything down and starting back up again in the order provided in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4027.

    Hi, I have just received a D10 ThinkStation 6427-33U
It has two 250GB HDD's connected in RAID 1. The system booted up fine the first few times, and on the 3rd reboot, I get the error shown below.

    1. Tried clearing the CMOS

If I press F1 , I get weird dots and it hangs
If i press F2, blinking cursor on top left

if this is a new system and you don't care about rebuilding it, pull one of the drives and see if it still gives you an error.   if it does then leave the second drive out, disable RAID, and try booting.   if this works then replace the second drive, destroy the array, and rebuild it from scratch.   it could be that the array data is corrupted.
if this doesn't work then call lenovo service as there may be something else going on here.   i personally don't use the intel RAID controller and prefer to use the LSI controller whenever possible.
in fact, you may consider using the LSI contoller for your SATA disks.   it's a unified SAS/SATA controller and can handle SATA drives just fine.   performance may be slightly slower but it's closer to a hardware RAID solution than the intel controller.

  • PE 2850 LSI / RAID controller problem

    Dear everyone,
I would like to ask You for a an advice - recently i bought, what it seemed to be a working PowerEdge 2850 server.
Since I've never got into working with Dell servers, I've learned trough YT videos that my server should give me at least Ctrl+M menu in order to access Configuration Utility of RAID controller - but I does not ... Only option I get is Ctrl+E which gives me nothing ... So I skipped the settings and went directly for OS installation.
I tried installing all sorts of OS to it (2003 / 2008 / 2012), but even though I've provided correct drivers on Floppy / USB thumb drive - OS reported there is no space on the destination HDD or it can not be initialized (please see attached image).
I even called the guy I bought it from, and he told me that he updated all the firmwares before he sold the server - and that he also finds strange that there is no regular Ctrl+M shortcut.
He told me that he remembers one firmware update utility with a  blue GUI that asked him something about HDD controller and RAID before updating - but he does not recall which one is it :(
    Please advise.
    Thank You all!

    nexus.so
The thing is ... when i get to BIOS there is no more RAID as an option to pick ... only Disabled or SCSI ... that is the problem unfortunately - even though there is a RAID key clearly marked on the chassis and beneath it a key plugged into the motherboard ....
If RAID is not an option, that means that the RAID components are not present. IF the RAID components (ALL THREE - battery, memory, key) are in the system, then they are not functioning (it may also mean the riser board is not working).
You can install an OS without it, but if you want to try to get RAID working, you can try: power off and unplug, remove RAID battery, remove RAID memory, remove RAID key, remove riser board, insert riser board, insert RAID key, insert RAID memory, insert RAID battery. power on and boot to BIOS to see if you have the option to enable RAID. If not, you will need to replace hardware, starting with the riser board and RAID key.
If you want to try to install in SCSI mode, use this driver:
    http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=KTK5F
