Because ILife came pre-installed with the computer and i do not have the disk
Thanks guys
Pat,

I just performed a reinstall of my OS and data on my MBP and this is the procedure I used.
I cloned the MBP using Carbon Copy Cloner to an external HDD.  The clone has all of the data on that external HDD, including all applications and the OS.  In addition it can boot the MBP.
I then used a previously made OS thumb drive and opened Disk Utility>Erase and formatted the internal HDD to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  You can achieve the same result by accessing the Recovery Partition and use Disk Utility from the four part menu.
I then reinstalled the OS.  You would do the same from the four part menu in the recovery partition.
I then connected the clone to the MBP and transferred my data, including all applications that were not included in the OS reinstallation.  In your case, this would be the iLfe applications as well.
Backups are important if you value your data.
Ciao.

Backup do not contain apps (or any media).  As far as your contacts go, Apple isn't crystal clear on this ... they seem to indicate that only your Favorites and recent call history is backed up, not your entire set of contacts.  To play it safe, backup or transfer your contacts to your computer in case they do not come back after re-loading your backup.  There are apps available that can export/import contacts for you.

Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, when you reach step 5, insert its original disk, restart with the C key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.

Didn't the link to contact the iTunes Store staff in the 'Additional Information' section of that article work for you? If you don't already have a valid rescue email address, only Apple itself can reset the questions.

  • How can i reset my macbook pro without the disc?

trying to reset a macbook pro to factory settings without a disc

You can get a set of discs specific to your machine by calling Apple. Cost is about $20, I believe. Be sure and have your serial number handy.
Then take a look at Thomas Reed's How to prepare your Mac for sale - that may not be exactly what you're doing but it will give your machine that factory-fresh feel.
    Good luck,

  • Unibody MacBook Pro will not re-install Leopard

Here's hoping that one of you clever people here can help me...
I was having some really sticky problems with my Leopard (failing permissions checks, problems resuming from sleep etc) and I could't fix it. I knew I had a recent backup on Time Capsule so I thought nothing of re-installing Leopard off the grey disk that the machine came with.
I have re-partitioned the disk to one clean, mac formatted partition and tried to a further erase and install to get Leopard up and running. However, the install process keeps failing every time. Generally it says the install just can't write to a directory and one time it said that the media was damaged.
I've really cleaned the disc and it doesnt look too bad to be fair and its only a few months old. Now, as a last resort (there is too much snow to get to an Apple store for a few days) I'm trying to install via Time Capsule, but even via Ethernet its going to take 5 hours so I thought I'd ask for some further advice from the clever people here. Any thoughts to get me back up and running without going to an Apple store would be great.

When you reformatted, under Volume Scheme you picked GUID partition?
Try the Apple Hardware Test. Disconnect all externals except power adapter.Put in the installer CD, Restart and hold the D key down. When AHT screen appears, select language, hit return. When the AHT main screen comes up follow instructions, take notes of any errors. After its done eject the cd and restart the installer and run
Disk Utility. That screen will also be after you select your language. At the top of the screen under Images Run the Verify. It will only work OS Extended (journaled)formatted volumes. Write down the errors if any show.

  • Will resetting my Macbook Pro with the disk delete all the applications I have installed?

    Hello all,
As a graduation gift, my parents bought me the Macbook Pro, but they forgot the Admin password they had set on it...So I did a little but of searching around and the Installation disk solution came up. I have the disk, but I was wondering if I did follow through with it, will it erase all the applications I have installed like Microsoft Word, PPT, and Excel?
    Thank you.

    See the following:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • How do i reset a macbook pro to the factory settings

How do I reset a Macbook to the original factory settings?

    Restore to original:
Boot from your grey installer DVD disc 1, or SL retail installer disc (hold down the C key on startup or hold down Alt/option on start and choose the installer disc).
OK the language page (if present).
From the installer screen, do not click 'continue' - go to the menu bar and choose Disk Utility; depending on the OS version it may be in the Utilities menu or Tools menu.
In DU, select your internal drive in the sidebar (the top item with the makers name and serial no.).
    Run Repair Disk (not permissions). If that comes up as disk OK;
Click the partition tab. Select the partiton from the drop-down above the graphic; 1 partiton is all you need. Go to the options button and ensure that the partition scheme is GUID  and the file system to Mac OS Extended (Journalled).
Name the partiton (usually Macintosh HD), click Apply.
When that's finished, select the new volume in the sidebar (indented to the right below the drive) and go to the Erase tab.
Select Security options and select zero data (one pass is more than sufficient). Click erase. That will take quite some time; probably measured in hours and dependant on the size of the drive.
(The purpose of this step is to ensure there is no recoverable data left on the drive).
When that's completed, close DU and continue with the installation.
When installation is complete, after the restart ignore the setup assistant and shut down the Mac (you may have to do this by holding down the power button).
The Mac is now ready for the new owner to personalise it as if new.
Be sure to pass on the original grey discs with the Mac, and the SL retail disc if you loaded SL.

Well, I have connected my mbpr directly to a Sony Bravia using an hdmi cable, then set the tv to use the corresponding input port, and it works just fine. Have also connected via airplay -> appletv -> tv (with the last connection via an hdmi cable), which also works fine.

  • Can you use a MacBook Pro without the keyboard attached?

    Hi,
I plan to upgrade the hard drive in my MacBook Pro (MBP) to a solid state drive (SSD). I also plan to remove the SuperDrive in the optical bay.
I have to install a new firmware on the SSD. Installing the firmware requires the SuperDrive.
I intend to remove the SuperDrive after installing the firmware. I'm using a Early 2008 MBP (Pre-Unibody). This MBP is a difficult to dismantle and assemble.
Can I run the MBP (to install the firmware in FreeDOS) without reattaching the top panel (which houses the keyboard). Or can I just lay the top panel on the MBP without screwing it down. Will either of these actions damage my MBP? Once I've installed the firmware on the MBP, I'll reattach the keyboard.
I don't want to dismantle the MBP (to insert the SSD), assemble the MBP (to install the firmware with the CD in the SuperDrive) then disassemble the MBP again (to remove the SuperDrive).
I'd rather dismantle and assemble the MBP once.
Lifting the top panel (which houses the keyboard)

Sorry, Just noticed you were not using the Unibody models.
I am unaware if the power button is dedicated. Seems like you're on the right track with iFixIt. I figure as long as USB is available, it should be okay.

  • How do you reset your Macbook to factory setting?

WOndering how to reset my Macbook.

What model, and what Mac OS X?
Best way is to restart on the Mac OS X install disk, then erase the hard drive and reinstall the operating system.  Make a backup of the content first as this will remove everything on the hard drive.

  • Have you updated your macbook pro to OSX 10.7.3?

i read a post at macrumors and 9to5mac that some people who did the 10.7.3 software update got some error messages and weren't successful with their update?  i was wondering if i should do it now ............. i hope to hear from other macbook pro users about their recent software update to 10.7.3.........thanks

I spoke with Apple.  After some back and forth, their advice was to use the "Install Mac OS X Lion" utility in Recovery Mode (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718) to reinstall the OS.  The engineer believed it should install 10.7.3.  If it doesn't at least the OS will be stable again and then the Combo Updater can be used to update the machine.  He advised against using the "Software Update..." utility if the reinstall didn't yield a 10.7.3 machine.
This procedure should NOT destroy any personal data, over write any applications, etc.   Just redo the OS.
If it doesn't work, then I guess I'm back where I started which is a 2 day old Time Machine image.

  • I can't connect to my iTunes library on my Macbook Pro using the Apple Remote app on my iPhone 4S. Why?

    Hi all,
I've been looking through the forums for help with this problem. There are a couple of threads with similar problems, but no solved threads and the discussion doesn't seem to go anywhere... As far as I can tell, it's been causing a lot of annoyance for many users, including myself, but it looks like the community's in the dark about why it's happening!
I'm trying to connect to my iTunes library using the Apple Remote app on my new iPhone 4S. As you may know, there are two ways to do this:
Connect via Home Sharing by setting up Home Sharing on both iTunes and the iPhone, or
Connecting directly to iTunes using a four digit passcode.
I've tried both methods, and neither work!
Here's what happens for each method:
From the Remote app start screen, I tap the "Turn on Home Sharing" button. I enter my Apple ID details (which are definitely correct), and get a confirmation message on my phone saying "Home Sharing is on using [my email address]. To control iTunes: Choose Turn On Home Sharing from the Advanced menu in iTunes on your computer." I then go to iTunes, turn on Home Sharing, enter my Apple ID again and get a confirmation message saying "Home Sharing is now on", etc. However, there's no connection formed between my iPhone and my Macbook Pro - the Remote app just shows a message saying "Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes on your computer or on Apple TV using the account [my email address].
From the Remote app start screen, I tap "Add an iTunes Library", and the four digit passcode is shown on my phone. I select the new "Quintin's iPhone" item that appears in the iTunes sidebar under "Devices", and enter the passcode on the screen that appears. Once I've entered it, I get a confirmation message saying "Your Remote is now able to control iTunes" with an "Okay" button. Clicking the "Okay" button makes the screen and the sidebar item disappear completely. On my phone, a message that says "Looking for ..." is shown on the screen with a spinning loading wheel, but nothing happens. After a minute or two, it stops and simply says "Could not find".
After trying both methods, I went through all of the troubleshooting steps here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1741 . Absolutely no effect.
I should mention that I was experiencing similar problems on my old iPhone 3Gs with an older version of iTunes. I thought it might have been some kind of hardware fault and expected it to clear up once I got the new phone, but the problem is still there. It's a new phone, a new computer, a newer version an iTunes... even a different network I'm trying to connect to it on. Bizarre!
I've even tried using the Mobile Air Mouse remote application instead. However again, the Mobile Air Mouse app on my phone can't pick up the Mobile Air Mouse server on my Mac.
I'm kind of at the end of my rope here. Anyone?

I have the exact same problem trying to use the Remote app on both my iPhone 3gs and iPad 2 with either my Mac or ATV2.  My Remote app used to work on my phone - I can't recall if I ever actually used it with my iPad, but when I tried today, I got all the same results as you did (on both iPad, and then iPhone).  I  was using my ATV2 to play music from iTunes on my Mac and wanted to use the Remote app, but it would not connect to either device no matter what I did.
