If you transfer data from Mac to Mac by Thunderbolt can you select individual files to transfer

I have 2 iMacs and understand I can connect them together using Thunderbolt connection.  I want to know if you can transfer individual files or if the transfer is simply the system from one to the other.
If you can select files to transfer then how do you do it
Thanks

If you mean using Target Disk Mode with a Thunderbolt connection refer to http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10725 for how to set one Mac up as the target disk.
To transfer files, just drag them from one of them to the other, just like you would do to copy between any other disk drives.

  • Using ipod as a hard drive to transfer data from PC to Mac

hey, Is is possible to use the ipod as a hard drive to transfer data from/to Mac and windows PCs?
I see no problem transfering data from/to my mac to the ipod. But I cannot see the ipod on the PC. When I plug the USB cable to my windows PC, it shows a popup message "external disk is not formated. Do you want to format it?".
    thanks,
    Martin

Windows cannot read a Mac formatted iPod.
Macs can read Windows fomratted iPods.
You need to run iTunes for Windows, then Restore the iPod.
It will now work on both Mac and PC.

  • How  to start in TDM or transfer data from an older Mac without FireWire??

For the MacBooks that don't have FireWire, how do you transfer data from another Mac since you can't start in Target Disk Mode?
Similarly, with a FireWire Mac, if I need to do some disk repair, I can start in TDM and run Disk Utility's Repair Disk or rebuild the directory with Disk Warrior. What do you do with these non-FireWire Macs?
(What is Apple thinking by removing FireWire???)

For the MacBooks that don't have FireWire, how do you transfer data from another Mac since you can't start in Target Disk Mode?
    I would still use Firewire.
The hard drive is fairly easy to remove on the Macbook. I would remove it and install it in an external Firewire enclosure temporarily to transfer your files quickly and reliably, then put the drive back in the Macbook.
You 'can' use USB or Ethernet, but it's not as reliable as Firewire.
Firewire is "isochronous", basically meaning that you can pump "clocked" data though it in real time. USB works more like TCPIP, with the data chopped up into packets and later reassembled. (Thus, at a minimum, you have latency, that is, the wait for the data to be "put back together".) Second, the Firewire protocol allows more direct address to memory (including mass storage) with minimal intervention of the CPU.
Putting the drive in a external Firewire enclosure is a bit more work, but nothing will interfere with it. No collisions, no glitches. Firewire is rock-solid.

  • How do I transfer data from my old Mac to  my new Mac?

The display on my Macbook Pro is broken, so I got a new Macbook Air. How do I go about transferring all my data (Word documents and iTunes mainly) from my old laptop to my new one?

You could try using target disk mode from your macbook pro to your macbook air. It basically alows you to see your macbook pro as a harddrive.

Not sure if your pro has thunderbolt, otherwise you may need a thunderbolt to firewire adapter.

  • Computer crash, need to transfer data from ipod to mac!

Judging from the other posts, it seems that the iPod only officially does a one-way sync computer to iPod.
However, my mac DIED and took all my contacts, calendar and music with it. It had to be reformatted, and all that is left is on my iPod.
Do I really have no chance to recover it?
Seems like every article someone posts with info that could help is an unknown link. Are these Apple guys trying to sabatoge our chances of doing a "reverse-sync" by corrupting the links?
Will someone please direct me to software or information that will help me recover my info and put my music back onto my computer?

  • How to transfer data from an Intel Mac with tiger to PPC MAc with Panther ?

    Hello,
I have an old iMAc g5 1.6Ghz (PPC) that I just upgraded (memory and hard disk) as I wish to use it to back up all my files and for video.
When I tried to tansfer all my files from my new intel Macbook using firewire mode, it did not work.
It seemed that my iMAc G5 could not recognize the intel Macbook hard drive.
Any idea how I could transfer my files and application without doing it manually ?

  • Transfer data from toshiba pc to macbook pro

transfer data from toshiba pc to macbook pro

You can transfer data a few ways from PC to MAC.
If you have an external hard drive formatted to a readable format, you can manually transfer data this way.
Or, you can use Windows Migration Assistant:

  • Transfer data from 2 oracle version to sql server 2005

    Hi,
I have two database servers on different machines. They are
    1) Oracle 8.1.7.4
    2) Oracle 7.3.1.4
I have to create agents which can transfer tables from these two databases to one machine having sql server 2005 database.
Please tell me what are the options. What drivers i need to install on machine having sql server 2005 so that i can transfer data from both oracle versions.
    Thanks
    Rajneesh.

You could create a linked server. Install the Oracle client on the server with SQL Server 2005, setup the TNS to your Oracle databases, create the linked server and then grab the data that way. There are migration tools as well but if the database is small in size I found linked servers to work and give me better control over the migration. This assumes that the database is not very large. If it is really large a migration tool might be a better option.

  • How to transfer data from macbook pro to an external hard drive, im using (WD 1TB 3.0) ???. I cannot copy anything from my mac to it not a single file.

how to transfer data from macbook pro to an external hard drive, im using (WD 1TB 3.0) ???. I cannot copy anything from my mac to it not a single file.

ok - since you'll be sharing it with a PC - connect it to your windows pc - then format from there - instead of NTFS format - choose exFAT.
or, you can read the link below on how to do it in dos mode.
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/how-can-i-forma t-external-drive-in-exfat-not-in/0f6bf19a-19d6-4470-ae05-53ddf26bb476?msgId=1860 eae3-3488-4eea-8326-f87b89d9851b
once you've formatted it - you can now use it in both your macbook and windows computer.

  • I am going to purchase the latest Mac Book Pro. How do I transfer data from my very old Macbook running OS 10.4?

I am going to purchase the latest Mac Book Pro. How do I transfer data from my very old Macbook running OS 10.4?

You may want to use the Migration Assistant, which appears the first time you start up the new machine during setup, and also is available later (it is found in /Applications/Utilities.) Note that if you are running 10.4.x on the old MacBook both machines need to use FireWire to do this, but the late 2006 MacBook has that. You will need a special 4 pin to 6 pin FireWire adapter cable, as the FireWire ports on the newest MacBook Pros are different.

  • Transfer data from mac to external hard drive

I am new to macs and am a bit lost.
I have a made up external hard drive (internal hard drive in a case) - TOSHIBA MK8025GAS Media. It is connected to the mac via USB.
I have been using it to transfer data from my pc to mac. The mac sees it and i can copy things from the hard drive to mac without problems. What i cannot do is to transfer from the mac onto the hard drive.
I pulled up the mac info of the hard drive and its both writable and ejectable (Has two partitions). In the partitions the info states that the owners aren't enabled, cannot turn owners off and cannot be formatted. Also the S.M.A.R.T. status is not supported. Not usre what all this means!
Can anyone tell me how to set it up to be able to transfer files to the hard drive from the mac and if it is possible to still transfer from windows to the hard drive?
    Thank you in advance.

    Thank you for the info.
A friend also told me that i could erase the hard drive using the disk utility in ms dos format. I have tried this and then could also partition it afterwards.
At the moment this seems to be working in both Mac and PC.
One thing i have noticed is when i try to transfer disk images (over 4Gb), near the end i get an 'unexpected error occured' (error code 1309).
    From the internet:
error -1309 fileBoundsErr: file's EOF offset mark or size is too big
    Whatever this means?
