If You Use Avast: Recent FP's
Avast had recent FP reports (database 12 02 05 - 0). It has been fixed in an update, but make sure you return from quarantine the following programs if they were removed: Teamviewer, Real Player, Malwarebytes, McAfee SiteAdvisor, Adobe reader, CCleaner, and any others detected since vps 1200205-0 was issued.

Thanks for an update. Unfortunately, I stopped using Avast after it did not find few viruses that were on my computer. I think free AVG is much better with Malwarebytes at this time.

Beware if you use Avast 2015: System Gets Borked After Optional Update KB3000850
I did controlled testing with Windows 8.1 x64 Enterprise test system. In this case, I installed optional update KB3000850 in a perfectly working and well tuned setup that was already running the up-to-date Avast 2015 Free antivirus package.
The update went in fine, but basically the system was badly broken after the update, emitting things like:

Worst of all, the system would not successfully reboot.
A look at the Avast forum reveals that a lot of people are seeing these issues.
In order to successfully install the optional KB3000850 update and have a working system,
BEFORE DOING THE UPDATE you should remove Avast antivirus completely
using the AvastClear tool:

Some have reported their systems continue to work after the update and after reinstalling Avast, but in my testing my test system was re-borked in exactly the same ways by doing so. Then the problems were again corrected by removing Avast.
For the moment I've put my sysetms back on Windows Defender, and everything seems to be working fine with KB3000850 in.
Avast engineering has yet to comment. I'm sure they're scrambling to find the problems.

1. Did Microsoft do in-depth testing of KB3000850 on systems with 3rd party antivirus software installed before rolling out this update?
2. Assuming the answer to the above is "no" or "not much", aren't Microsoft's managers sensitive to the fact that Windows Updates are losing credibility? Hint:
Making an update "optional" doesn't absolve Microsoft from one bit of the responsibility for making it work right.
3. Did Microsoft make early copies of this update available to their partners? For example Avast? If not, why not? Their user base is in the hundreds of millions. If for no reason other than self-preservation,
does Microsoft not think it's important that their updates not break actual systems in the field?
4. For what it's worth, I've had zero problems with the update after removing Avast completely and dropping back to the integrated Windows Defender. Is this Microsoft's plan? To eliminate 3rd party antivirus vendors?

I recently started using FF. I use a local nz auction site trade me & noticed that some words (partic 'free' and 'women') showed up green on FF (not on IE) with a link to other sites one a dating site one a free gaming site I think. I asked TM to remove these links, however they've asked me to tell them which browser I use & which security software (use Avast free vsn). So obviously isn't them I conclude. (they are going to follow it up). I also use Vista. I went into my Trade Me listings initially and disguised the 'offending words' ie made 'women' 'w...n' instead - then the next word 'women' displayed the link, and so on thru the ad. When I reinstated the word 'women' again it showed up green on FF only, not IE. Wondering what FF's take is on this?? Many thanks in advance.From what you have described, I don't think you are ever going to pick that up as malware at all. But I did look at the site you mentioned in Google Chrome, and in IE9. First thought was maybe Chrome suppresses it, but that would be contrary to trying to convince you that their AdSense or IntelliTXT is "helping" you.
What I did find in Chrome was
"Google Chrome's connection attempt to ad-apac.doubleclick.net was rejected. The website may be down, or your network may not be properly configured."
Since I don't have ad blockers in Chrome or IE, that tells me that my hosts file is doing its job, you can draw you own conclusions. There is something similar displayed in IE, but I can't read what was there because the font-size was too big. for the space. In Firefox with "Adblock Plus" extension it is all wiped out. The hosts file works across the entire system but is directed at blocking malware sites more than advertising. "Adblock Plus" is very good at blocking ads and can do its blocking with more generic filters, and can block a lot of malware from coming in but it can't block at the system level that a hosts file can.
In IE although I can only see "It appea" because the font is too large and text does not wrap it does actually say "It appears you are connected to the Internet, but you might want to try to reconnect to the Internet."
I would certainly suggest installing "Adblock Plus" extension and the "Easylist (USA)" filter subscription -- links are in the links previously provided, and installing the hosts file as well also in the links.
It takes a bit more work to install and maintain a hosts file but the directions should be clear enough. -
Am I the only one who has firefox crashing when trying to use "Clear Recent History"?
Well I installed Firefox 4 on both my laptop and my desktop and it does the same problem to both of them, which annoys me greatly.
Such a simple feature should have no problems working right? Well not for me apparently.
When I try to use Clear Recent History (ctrl + shift + del) from the firefox menu, it asks me what I want to clear, then I press clear and nothing happens. It freezes and crashes. If I would have this problem for only 1 computer I wouldn't have minded much but the fact that this feature is having so much troubles running is getting a bit annoying for me. I just want to quickly clear my cache of everything. Shouldn't be hard!
What annoys me the most is that by browsing trough the web, I didn't find anybody else with this problem!
I don't mind much because after retrying it eventually works... but an awesome browser such as firefox should work from the start, not after many tries.You can try to select only one setting at the time in [[Clear Recent History]] to see which one is causing the crash.

That's definitely strange, kzmidge. I want a working phone in your hands though. I noticed you mentioned you received the suggestion to complete a reset. Did you already do that? Is it working again? Are you receiving an error message?
If you hesitated a little longer to complete the reset, you can try to place your phone into Safe Mode http://vz.to/rxg0ii and see if you can access mobile sites from your browser. This mode will stop 3rd party applications from running, so you won't be able to use the apps you mentioned but we may be able to narrow down the trouble in Safe Mode. If the mobile sites work, that means the trouble may be in a recently downloaded application and you may be able to avoid the reset my uninstalling some of your more recently installed applications. If it's still giving you trouble, the reset http://vz.to/18wzOCi is the next best step.

Error message, "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it."
I recently had a HDD crash and need to reinstall my App Store software purchases except I now recieve this message when I attemp to redownload software.
"To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it."
Which leaves me feeling incredulous because I logged into the App Store using the same account it claims I need to use to download my software purchases?

I have updates for iMovie and iPhoto but when I try to update them through App Store I'm told that "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it." even though I bought it and it is on my iMac! Any suggestions on what I need to do?

Delete both apps using this utility > Download AppCleaner for Mac - Uninstall your apps easily. MacUpdate.com
That will delete the apps and all associated files.
Then re download the apps. That will download the most recent version updates included.
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed then click Install.
Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchase. -
Can you use the same charging cable for both an iPhone and an IPad or are they different? When I use the charging cable for my iPhone on my Ipad, it doesn't charge.

Using Lion, recent Movies with .mov extension will not play in Quicktime, but earlier ones taken with same camera (Kodak M530) will play fine. I have got VLC which runs them fine but cannot get movies saved in iPhoto to play in VLC...and of course its a real bugger to copy moves from iPhoto to another folder; in fact if anyone can tell me how to do that I will accept defeat!

I feel Linux lacks a good and simple graphical tool to do desktop backups for regular users. I'm thinking of writing one myself (probably a front-end to a good command line tool), but before I get started, I want to make sure I'm not reinventing the wheel.
So:
- Is there a good graphical tool available already? It should be: simple (minimalist interface, sane defaults), fast and incremental.
- What do YOU currently use for your desktop backups?
EDIT: rsync alone is not great, because a good backup solution keeps multiple snapshots. Imagine you deleted a file by accident 15 days ago, and realize only today: rsync won't save you.
EDIT2 : I have tried backintime, I think it's a step in the right direction, but it's not that great. Maybe I should improve on it instead of starting something new, though.
EDIT3 : Has anyone tried PyBackPack (http://andrewprice.me.uk/projects/pybackpack/) ? I'm trying it at the moment and it seems to be getting it right. I'd like to hear some success stories before getting my hopes to high

Finding Fonts in Fireworks - Why Does it Always Start at the Top, Instead of the Last Font You Used?
I've been using Fireworks for many years and I love it (currently using CS5). But I live irritated with the way it starts at the beginning of your font list when you're selecting a font - instead of going right to the last font you used, which is how many other programs work.
Is there a way to change settings in Fireworks so it'll do this?

Let's say you're working on something and you have your text highlighted and you're working down the font list trying different fonts. You try a few A fonts, then B fonts, and so on, down the list. Well, instead of Fireworks bringing you back to the current font IN THE LIST, everytime you go to try another font, it starts back at the top, and you have to scroll down and find where you were in the list ALL OVER AGAIN EVERY SINGLE TIME.
In Illustrator, when you have the Character box open, it does exactly what I'm describing. If you have some text selected, every time you change the font and go back to the font drop-down, it takes to you to where you are. If Myriad is the font you are currently using, it doesn't start you back at the top when you go to the drop-down to find another font. It takes you to Myriad in the list. -

Can you use a soft tip stylus type pen on an IdeaTab A1107 Tablet screen?
I recently purchased an IdeaTab A1107 Tablet, which I believe is the same as the IdeaTab A1, just with the Android 4.0 OS. My wife is having trouble always hitting the correct buttons on the screen (7" screen). Can you use a soft tip stylus type pen or other stylus on an IdeaTab A1107 Tablet screen? Would that be easier than tapping the screen with your finger?

Go to Solution.You can use a stylus that's sold as being designed to work with "capacitive screens" - not just any stylus will do.
You can also use any conductive object as a stylus on the A1 screen, as long as your skin is touching the part of the object that is conductive. -
How do you restore a recently deleted music file from one's iTunes library located on a PC
While trying to clean up duplicate music files in my iTunes library, I mistakenly deleted several songs that I need to restore. How can this be accomplished? The songs still reside on the PC but need to be resynced to iTunes someway.
Unless you have a recent backup of your library that you can restore, iTunes has no information about the files you've deleted, so you'll need to use Windows' search functions to locate them. This is one of many reasons why you should set these options in Edit > Preferences > Advanced:
and if necessary use iTunes' File > Library > Organize Library... function to consolidate your media so that everything is stored in a standard, predictable folder structure under iTunes\iTunes Media. -
N95 boots when I use GPS Recent feature
N95 boots always when I use GPS Maps (Kartat in Finnish) and select the from or to location using the Recent (Äskeinen in Finnish) feature. This happens also with the new 11.0.026 software. It lists the recent locations (I think so) and immediately the phone boots. Anyone else have this problem? Otherwise it works great.
There is no need to lose any data. Use Nokia PC suite to back up the contents of your phone you wish to keep. Then format everything. Once you have got the maps working again, just restore everything but the map data and you will be all set to go...
