If you use Secunia PSI, System Update will be displayed as insecure

I use Secunia PSI to check the currency of my installed programs. Within the past few weeks Secunia PSI is reporting ThinkVantage System Update as Insecure.
If you have V3.14 installed on XP or Vista, you have the latest release and your system is not insecure.
If you have V4 installed on Windows 7, your system is not insecure.
It appears that Secunia PSI is lifting the kernel version, which is currently version 3.0 (this is what it should be).
Secunia PSI offers a download solution and if you click on it, you will get version 3.14.  Do not download the Secunia PSI solution if you have Windows 7 (V 3.14, which will not work on W7).
After downloading the solution offered by Secunia PSI for XP and Vista, a rescan will still show your system as insecure.                  Ignore it..... your system is secure.      Secunia is aware of the problem.

Hi,
thanks for the post. It will surelly help to other users.
Just one note:
Multiple "scaning" tools are detecting TVSU and other applications as unsecure, because they detect, that this application is making a lot of times a internet access and this is sometimes considered as "unsecure".
I would also advice in this case to ignore it.
Thanks again.
Cheers

  • Help - Disconnected Server Setup: Which program do you use to copy the updates off with?

    Hi,
I am in the process of upgrading our Disconnected WSUS Network up.
My new configuration is 1 Server running 2012 Datacentre which hosts our online WSUS server and 1 Windows 7 Enterprise PC (both in a workgroup) in the same subnet which has a bluray "robot" burner  to burn the actual updates attached to it.
I have to use physical media due to the security policies in place.  My "disconnected" Server is running Server 2008 R2 and is in a domain.
The problem I have is that previously I used ntbackup on our 2003 R2 Internet connected server, created the full or incremental backup as needed and transferred it to our Server 2008 R2 domain computer.  I then used the ntbackup tool created for server
2008 to extract the updates.  This has worked fine.
I thought with Server 2012 R2 I could just use the Windows Server Backup feature as a direct replacement for Ntbackup and transfer the backup.  However when I transfer the backup and attempt to open it on my 2008 R2 server I get a message that the global
catalog is corrupted.  I tried this a couple of time to make sure I didn't have bad disc's and to rule out a dodgy burner.
I have now spent the week researching how to fix this and have come to the conclusion that the 2012 backup file is not compatible with the 2008 version of Windows Server Backup.
I have attempted to recover the catalog using http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725765.aspx but don't get the option too.  I have also ran up some VM's on my test lab with the same configuration and attempted to transfer a couple of MB and these
failed instead of the 86GB i used initially in work.
Since I failed at this route I have tried to find another program that can accomplish what I need but have reached a dead end.  I have tried Rich copy but this fails to copy the ACL's over.  I have tried Winrar but I'm not convinced about the ability
to do a full and incremental backups.  Have also tried wrysnc but again this didn't work.
Any help with what programs other people use would be very very appreciated.
    Thanks
    Ray

    Hi Ray,
According to your description, are you looking for compression utilities?
Due to this forum is focusing on the issue of WSUS, to get better help, please post your question on the Windows backup forum.
    Here is the address,
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/home?forum=windowsbackup
Besides, why don't you use the removable hard disk? It's quite fast and cheap.
    Best Regards.

  • M93p tower - ThinkVantage System Update will not launch

I have an M93p tower, and for some reason System Update no longer starts successfully. The opening Lenovo logo showing Version 5 of System Update appears for 3-4 seconds and then disappears, but the actual program window never appears.
Same thing happens no matter whether I try to launch System Update directly from the Start Menu or from within Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools.
I have tried uninstalling System Update, and manually reinstalling the very latest version obtained from the Lenovo M93p driver/software download site.  No change. Program window will still not launch even though the opening logo appears.
I have 10 other Lenovo machines (M91p, M92p, W530 laptop, multiple M93p SFF) and System Update has never failed to start on any of them.  Only this one machine has this strange system appeared.
Any thoughts?  Something I should look for in some log somewhere that might provide a clue?

  • Win7: Skype update will not display some favorite ...

These non-displaying contacts are stored on my computer.  I can find them if I search SKYPE.  But they will not display with my contacts.
I wish Microsoft would not "improve" Skype!  I have spent hours going around in circles trying to pose this question. I hope somebody in the community has the answer to this problem.

Thanks for your thoughts. Here's what I've learned. The browsers display correctly for the new user after SafeBoot. I removed all startup items, to no avail. Removed all fonts from the new user account, nothing. Removed all fonts from the admin user's library, nothing. Then I removed all fonts from the HD library, and that fixed it for the new user. Now I just have to figure out which one it was.
So in summary, a bad font in the HD library was affecting Safari and Chrome (but not Firefox) in new user accounts, but not in the admin user's account. Nice. D

  • Beware if you use Avast 2015: System Gets Borked After Optional Update KB3000850

I did controlled testing with Windows 8.1 x64 Enterprise test system.  In this case, I installed optional update KB3000850 in a perfectly working and well tuned setup that was already running the up-to-date Avast 2015 Free antivirus package.
The update went in fine, but basically the system was badly broken after the update, emitting things like:
...and this one during logoff or restart:
Worst of all, the system would not successfully reboot.
A look at the Avast forum reveals that a lot of people are seeing these issues.
In order to successfully install the optional KB3000850 update and have a working system,
BEFORE DOING THE UPDATE you should remove Avast antivirus completely
    using the AvastClear tool:
    http://www.avast.com/en-us/uninstall-utility
Some have reported their systems continue to work after the update and after reinstalling Avast, but in my testing my test system was re-borked in exactly the same ways by doing so.  Then the problems were again corrected by removing Avast.
For the moment I've put my sysetms back on Windows Defender, and everything seems to be working fine with KB3000850 in.
Avast engineering has yet to comment.  I'm sure they're scrambling to find the problems.

No fix has yet been posted by Avast (clearly they want to test it thoroughly), but reflection on this update yields some poignant questions about just who's at fault here...
    1.  Did Microsoft do in-depth testing of KB3000850 on systems with 3rd party antivirus software installed before rolling out this update?
    2.  Assuming the answer to the above is "no" or "not much", aren't Microsoft's managers sensitive to the fact that Windows Updates are losing credibility?  Hint:
Making an update "optional" doesn't absolve Microsoft from one bit of the responsibility for making it work right.
    3.  Did Microsoft make early copies of this update available to their partners?  For example Avast?  If not, why not?  Their user base is in the hundreds of millions.  If for no reason other than self-preservation,
does Microsoft not think it's important that their updates not break actual systems in the field?
    4.  For what it's worth, I've had zero problems with the update after removing Avast completely and dropping back to the integrated Windows Defender.  Is this Microsoft's plan?  To eliminate 3rd party antivirus vendors?

  • How do you use PL/SQL to update a view?

Hi there, I know how to use SQL to create and update a view. I am using it to pull data for a specific date.
But now I want to find a way to parametized it (ie. the date) so that it can be run like a program each day (based on system date) to pull the latest data. I am thinking of using PL/SQL but not sure how it can be done.
    DECLARE
    run_date DATE := '10/12/2009';
    BEGIN
    END
Can someone shed some light on how I can update a view? Thanks alot.

    Try this
    DECLARE
    run_date DATE := '10/12/2009';
    BEGIN
    execute imeediate 'create view view_name as select * from dual';
    END

  • To make the change from MobilMe I will have to update from System 10.4.11 to 10.7.2.  How many system and firmware updates will I have to do?

To make the change from MobilMe I will have to update fro System 10.4.11 to 10.7.2.  How many firmware and system updates will I have to make

First, see if your system can run Lion:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html
If you have any PPC apps, none of them will work under Lion.
If you meet the requirements for Lion, you can go to Snow Leopard(US $29), then update to 10.6.8, then update to Lion(US $29).
Apple says 2GB's of memory minimum. I wouldn't update to Lion unless you can run at least 4GB's.

    Hi,
As title mentions: "how many times can you use sccm 2012 offline updates for the wim file before corrupting the image(wim)"?

    Jan Hoedt

In my experience the offline servicing feature is only OK and too unreliable for production.

  • ThinkVantage System Update 5.02 problem -- System Update hangs or freezes when installing KB updates

Often after installing a KB update, System Update will restart the computer and then resume processing to install the next downloaded KB update.  However, after restarting, it always freezes or hangs part way through the next KB install.  After waiting 5 or 10 minutes, I click on "cancel."   System Update acknowledges cancellation but nothing happens, and when I eventually give up and select "End task" in Windows Task Manager, I am informed that "This program is not responding."
Clearly this is a bug, perhaps arising from an license consent dialog box that fails to pop-up.  I have resorted to downloading and installing these KB updates one-by-one after a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit on my T400 model 2764CTO.    Service Pack 1 is installed and Microsoft.NET Framework 3.51, which satisfies Lenovo's requirements.  I am running BIOS 3.11 and plan to update it, but would like to solve this problem first, as I would hate to experience a freeze during a BIOS update!
Anyone else having this problem, or any solutions?

DID you get the machine from someonelse, outside of  Lenovo? DID you upgrade the original o/s?
    what o/s?
    ==
KB are offered by microsoft, not Lenovo/su.  Under a rare condition, SU will offer as KB.  A known instance, where microsoft offers HOTFIX, but not for monthly update distribution.  Lenovo has their version of this KB. Probably this HOTFIX fixes a problem in Lenovo land driver that needs the hotfix.
I am amazed at how many KB fixes show up for your machine!!!
    ==
Clearly this is a bug, perhaps arising from an license consent dialog box that fails to pop-up. << assumption, please docment.<<<
Always update your BIOS 1st, the Net frame (v4?). Then try the update land.
    ===
As I would hate to experience a freeze during a BIOS update
Dont BIOS update during a rain storm. or power fauilure.  Always use a ISO (cd) version of this.  Download/burn this version  in case.  Then use the other version, Update from windows. (you now have a backup).
Please research your hardware install guide, as too how to RESET BIOS eeprom.  Get tweezers, change the jump prom clip. BIOS flash from 0. Jump prom clip back.   Is this scary, yesl jumper is on mother board.
    so
    1 3 5
    2 4 6
Plastic jumper is 34 56. Change to 1234, and you reload a bios from blank. You can enter UUID, serial number and fun stuff.
Do not loose the plastic jumper. Turn the a/c off. Have reading glasses.  But this is the solution to what if BIOS update freezes.  Also have a ISO backup of the previous  release  of BIOS on CD.

You have win8. Have you ever had an earlier version of SU , ie when you booted up the 1st time (did it work).
Run windows update and make sure .netframework is current.
Did you upgrade from win 7?

  • System Update error "An error occurred while gathering user information"

I honestly think that i'm never going to stop running into issues with Lenovos software....
Anyways, i've reinstalled countless times trying every way to fix things and nothing works. I will post my log for others to look at and hopefully help me out.

One thing I noticed is that if I visit the download link for the HelloLevel_9_14_00.xml here: https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/agent/SSClientCommon/HelloLevel_9_14_00.xml
It shows up completely blank but everything HelloLevel_9_13_00.xml and < shows up fine for me. It appears this is the same issue the log is reporting saying that "this XML file is not well-formed" could this be a Lenovo issue though? No one else has reported this exact problem though so I guess not.
My model is a Thinkpad Edge E540 (20C6008SUS) with Windows 8.1
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The hello level  9_14 is expected behavior. The link is currently set blanks.  Down the road, when a newer version of SU is available, and Lenovo wants SU to self update, this link will contain the self update information.
As you saw, hello level9_13 contains data.
    My notes:
    systemupdate506-01-15-2015.exe System Update  5.06.0027 hl=14  (02/05/2015)
    systemupdate506-11-04-2014.exe System Update  5.06.0024 hl=13  (11/24/2014)
    >>>> users of SU 5.6.0024 , which is hello level 13, will be offered self update of SU to the current release.

Expected output is the creation of  two XML's:
    'C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\System Update\egather\sysrecomin.XML'
    'C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\System Update\egather\sysreco.XML'
These two .xmls contain information about your system such as machine type and model.

DId your system ship from the factory with System Update installed?
Have you ever run a prior release of SU on your system with success, or is this your first time using Su on your system?

  • ThinkVantage System Update - wrong language

I'm currently running ThinkVantage System Update 4 (4.00.0030) on Windows 7 Pro x64 and I have the same problem. The program uses your Regional Setting FORMAT  to get the updates. This is the first tab option in Regional Settings (not your Regional Setting Input Language nor your Regional Setting System Locale). Why, I didn't find a good answer to that? The problem seems to persist from the early versions of System Update ; we are at version 4... common!!?
You can actually override the GUI language of System Update by changing the value of this registry key :
    For Win 7 x64 :
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Lenovo\System Update\LanguageOverride
For x86 (32 bits) version, I think this is the key :
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lenovo\System Update\LanguageOverride
... to the language of your choice (EN, FR, DE, IT, ES...).
Unfortunately, this is just the GUI language, not the language for which System Update will retrieve update from the server. The program will still use your Regional Setting FORMAT for this.
I've read many post on the topic but didn't find a right solution. The dowloaded software and drivers language should be retrieved as per language setting of the OS not on date, time and number formats. If it's too hard to get the right setting from a multilanguage system, why not simply put a configurable language option? Is Lenovo going to fix the problem?
For now, the workaround is to dumbly set the Regional Setting Format to the "language" you wish before starting System Update and set it back to your preferred format when all update are installed. Any better idea?
P.S. Could a mod rename and move this topic in ThinkPad Forum please, because I think this is more related to System Update software than X Series Laptops
    X201 tablet w/ Multitouch, 8-Cell Battery
    Core i7 620LM (2.00 GHz) w/ 4 GB DDR3 Memory
    Windows 7 Pro 64 bits, HDD 320GB 7200RPM

I bought an X200T in Belgium, chose the English version of Windows Vista Business upon first boot.
Yet some Lenovo  software is still in Dutch.
The ThinkVantage System Update wants to download updates for Windows Vista NL instead of ENG.  I have already downloaded the latest English version of ThinkVantage System Update but it insists speaking Dutch to me and does not recognize my system as being English.
Installing NL updates for an English OS is a recipe for disaster, I presume, so I cannot use that tool.

  • Network drives and System Update updating itself (Error 1327.Invalid Drive)

I have a Windows network share permanently mapped as a network drive on my system. This prevents Lenovo System Update 5 from updating itself.
    Here is what happens:
Launch Lenovo System Update and click Next to look for updates.
When 'Searching for agent updates' it will tell me: 'System Update is updating itself. Your copy of System Update needs to be updated. Click OK to begin updating System Update.'
Click OK, Lenovo System Update will download the update and appear to install it.
At the end it will tell me: 'System Update was installed successfully'
Click Close, just to be sure I wait for a while so System Update can finish whatever it is doing in the background (if anything at all).
When nothing appears to happen I launch Lenovo System Update manually and it will tell me it needs to update itself again, and go to the same process as above. The update did not install successfully at all. System update keeps updating itself in a loop.
Next thing I tried is manually downloading the latest System Update version from http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=TVSU-UPDATE
I downloaded systemupdate503-09-17-2013.exe for my Windows 7 machine.
The installer detects to old version of System Update and offers to uninstall that. I click Yes.
A moment later the real error appears: 'Error 1327.Invalid Drive: S:\'
The only thing I can do now is press OK to close the installer.
The S:\ drive is my network drive which is permanently mapped to a share on my NAS.
It is not an invalid drive, S:\ opens fine in Windows Explorer.
I don't know why the System Update installer wants to access my S: drive in the first place. All my applications are installed on C:. While I did move some special folders like My Pictures and My Videos to S:, the relevant folders My Documents and Desktop are still on C:.
I have found a workaround to the problem above:
Close Lenovo System Update completely when it says it needs to update itself.
Run Command Prompt as Administrator (find it in the start menu, righ-click it and 'Run as administrator').
Type 'subst s: c:\' without the quotes. Replace s: with the drive letter of your network drive, and c: should be an existing regular drive.
Now run Lenovo System Update again and let it update itself.
You'll notice System Update now restarts itself after updating and there are no problems.
Once you are done with System Update, type 'subst s: /D' to delete the substituted virtual drive. Don't worry, this will not delete your actual network drive.
The workaround does the job, but it would be nice to see an actual fix from Lenovo. I have a ThinkPad X230 running 64bit Windows 7 Professional if this is relevant.

Please try either of the workaround.
    1. Create a new Admin user, log on in that and then you can install Adobe Reader,
    or
    2. easier solution is just create a dummy folder on your machine anywhere, lets says Folder name "Dummy"  in c:\
    not go to command prompt
    and type subst I: c:\dummy
and you are all set to go.
once you are done, you can remove that virtual drive mapping by
    subst I:\  /d
please let me know if works.

  • Where the files Lenovo System Updates download?

I use the Lenovo System Update to download and install the new drivers. I just wonder after it download the installation file of drivers, what is the directory it put?
I want to find it and delete the installation file after I istall it.
    Thanks very much.

What version of SU are you using? Are you SSD? The latest SU self cleans the downloaded files. The older versions of SU retained all, logs included.
    Try C/windows/temp.  and   C/users/your id/appdata/local/temp.
