If your airport connection isn't dropping but it is extremely slow......

I think I have solved my problem. A friend fixed a macbook pro on a netgear router and I applied a similar trick on my d-link router and it seems to have worked. On a netgear router you need to change the speed to 2 mbps. On a d-link router change the tx rates (wireless > advanced > performance) to 1-2 mbps. Let me know how you get on. I am now getting pages to download quicker than my girlfriend's pc which certianly wasn't the case before. At last !!! This must be a setting that doesn't affect PPC macs and PC's but did affect us poor people

obviously depends on what router you are using. But connect up to your router... put in default username and password etc.... the setting will be in the wireless settings of your router. In the wireless speed bit I think it is set by default to quite a fast mb/s rate. select a slower option. click apply/save changes. the router will restart. Once it comes back up re-select your wireless network and you should be sorted

  • MacBook connects to Internet fast but iMac is extremely slow

When I bought my new MacBook Intel CoreDuo and connected wirelessly, the connection on my old iMac G5 Intel CoreDuo has become extremely slow. I can't even run software updates on it! My work Windows PC connects superfast to the same wireless router, and after trying many suggestions on the forum's posts, I am getting nowhere near resolving my issue. I can swear I am using the same settings on both Mac's although, as suggested in one of the posts, I have changed the location on my iMac. Please help!

    Hi Uzma,
As you mentioned, it works perfectly in Safe mode with Network. It might be caused by some third-party software or service. I would like to suggest you perform a Clean Boot to confirm it:
How to perform a clean boot in Windows
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Meanwhile, run Internet Explorer 11 in No Add-ons mode by running the Run command from the Start menu, and then typing
    iexplore.exe -extoff into the box.
    2.Check if the issue persists.
If yes , open Internet Explorer for the desktop, click the Tools menu, and click
    Manage Add-ons.
3.Click Toolbars and Extensions, click each toolbar or extension, clicking
Disable to turn off all of the browser extensions and toolbars.
4.Restart Internet Explorer 11. Go back to the Manage Add-Ons window and turn on each item, one-by-one.
After you turn each item back on, see if Internet Explorer crashes or slows down. Doing it this way will help you identify the add-on that's causing Internet Explorer to crash.
After you've figured out which add-on was causing the problem, turn it off until you have an update from the manufacturer.
In addition, loading image and script indeed take more time than blank webpage.

  • WRT54GS Connection in videogames dropped, but not online

Hi, starting back in february or so, I've had this weird problem with my WRT54GS router. Originally I would be able to play Team Fortress 2 no problem, but after a few months I would get kicked out randomly every 15-20 minutes. I could still play other Steam games no problem. Lately the problem has gotten worse and worse in that I can no longer play any steam games without being kicked out of the game after 15-20 minutes, and the list has grown to games outside of Steam as well.
The list of non-working games that drop every 15-20 minutes has grown to:
    Counter Strike: Source
    Team Fortress 2
    Company of Heroes
    DoTA
The games I am still able to play online are:
    Call of Duty 4
    World of Warcraft
I have checked my router settings to ensure that they are correct (ie. ports are open, client lease time is set to 24 hrs, etc.) and it has been updated to the latest firmware.
I have built myself a new computer (with a different wireless card) since this originally happened, and my roomate also has the very same problem (with a different wireless card from the two I had used/am using), so I know it cannot be the computers and it cannot be the wireless cards.
I've checked on these forums for a similar problem and have only found one user that had one that was possibly similar (xbox would drop connection with games every 15-20 minutes).
I have run ping -t's on my second monitor while the game kicks me out to ensure my internet isn't dropping, and it isn't. So I know that for some reason the games are dropping but the internet itself still works.
Has anyone had any experience with this? It is quite frustrating and I've been trying to fix this problem for months but to no avail.

Check the latest firmware on the router ...
Also you can Enable QoS ....that is Quality of Service under Administration Tab .... that will provide highest priority to Application like playing online games ....

  • Read this if your Airport connection drops

I just got off the phone with support. I noticed that many other people are having this same issue, where if there is no network traffic, the Airport drops its association to the AP. They are unaware of others having this problem. So, if you're having this problem, you need to call support and tell them, or it's not going to get fixed.
We troubleshooted for about 30 mins, ran a hardware test, and found nothing. It definitely only happens when there is no network traffic, if I start a continuous ping, the connection never drops. I've tried it on my Airport Express, a Linksys WRT54G, a NetScreen 5GT-Wireless, and an Airespace network. I read on some other forums that MBP users were having the issue, and it seems to have surfaced in 10.4.5, and continues to exist in 10.4.6.
Bottom line, if you're having the problem, stop posting here and pick up the phone. It won't get fixed unless they create tickets for the issue.

I think i have figured out the problem between the networking (airport or ethernet) on linksys routers and the macbook. For some reason the macbook only kills the router when it goes on standby or when you shutdown. Think it has to do with the way the new airport card is disconnecting from the router that is causing for the whole router to drop. What i did was check on the box where it says to disconnect from ap before logging off. Which means you also have to set the macbook to log off the user account when it goes on standby that way the airport will properly log off. I think its not an issue related with the atheros card on the new macbooks but with osx itself. Especially considering that when i boot up windows on the macbook the wireless works fine after a shutdown or standby.

    Time Capsule & AT&T 2Wire Gateway Model: 3800HGV-B
Instructions on connecting your Time Capsule to an AT&T 2Wire Modem Model: 3800HGV-B. I do know if these instructions will work for other models. Some 2Wire models require it to be set in “Bridge-Mode” or a “Router-Behind-Router”. The 3800HGV-B model does not have the ability to be put into “Bridge-Mode”.  After hours of frustrating tech support calls, mine is finally working, so I thought I would share what worked for me. Why something like this isn’t already posted, I have no idea? Although I may not have all the terms correct, I think I can explain it in a way to help others the way I wish someone could have helped me. Something this simple, shouldn’t be so hard.
    The Situation
Those with AT&T U-verse are unable to connect their Time Capsule to Network.
    The Problem
Apple & AT&T’s Tech Support have failed to provide solutions.
    The Solution
To configure the AT&T 2Wire with the Time Capsule the 2Wire must have its router disabled, in addition to disabling both the 2Wire and Time Capsule Firewalls. The goal is to get these two device to play well with each other. The challenge is that the 2Wire Modem is both a router and a modem. The Time Capsule is also a router, so they compete with each other, thus creating the headache many of us have experienced.
Step One: Create a wireless network.
Connect your DSL or cable modem to the Ethernet WAN port on your Time Capsule.
Open Airport Utility, select Time Capsule, and click Continue.
Follow the onscreen instructions to create your new network.
Once you have finished the above steps, make sure your screens look similar to mine. Once you have the Time Capsule set up according to the directions, you still won’t have internet connection. Be sure there is a “checkmark” next to your new newly created Network.
    The Situation
This above process should have set the Time Capsule in a DHCP mode, thus making it ready to receive the signal/ IP address sent by the 2Wire.
    Step Two: Allow DMZplus mode
Open your web browser and enter the address http://192.168.1.254/  This will take you to the 2Wire settings. Select Settings, click Applications, Pinholes, and DMZ. At the bottom of the page, select Allow all applications (DMZplus mode). Click Save.
Note: Once DMZplus mode is selected and you click save, the system will issue a new IP address to the selected computer. The computer must be set to DHCP mode to receive the new IP address from the system, and you must reboot the computer. If you are changing DMZplus mode from one computer to another computer, you must reboot both computers.
The 2Wire Wireless Setting must be disabled. You don’t want the 2Wire to broadcast its wireless signal. You must shut off the “Router” abilities of 2Wire. In the U-verse 2Wire Settings, select the Firewall tab, click Applications, Pinholes and DMZ. At the bottom of the page select the radio button which Allows all applications (DMZplus mode).
You will know when you are successful at shutting the wireless down by  selecting the Airport Signal in the upper right of your screen. If you see a network called 2Wirexxx, then your 2Wire is still broadcasting its signal.
The Time Capsule is setup in the DHCP mode, but isn’t able to get the IP Address because there are 2 Firewalls to address. There is the firewall of the 2Wire and one for the Time Capsule.
    Step Three: Disable the Firewall.
One thing all the other tech’s missed, was unchecking the “Enable default host at”. Your screen should look like the below screen shot, because this disables the other Firewall that is giving you trouble. Be sure and Update after you make your changes.
Once the changes are complete, turn the Airport off. Shut down your computer. Unplug the 2Wire and the Time Capsule and let them sit for 5 min. Next, plug the 2Wire up first and let it begin its reboot process. Then, plug in the Time Capsule and let it start to reboot. Finally, turn on your computer and open Airport Utility.
Finally, after a complete reboot of the system, try to connect the internet. You should now be capable of opening your system and enjoying your online experience.
    I hope this helps!

  • Airport connects to the internet but disconnects on downloads. Help please!

Hi there! I just bought my first Mac today which was all very exciting except for some reason my internet connection is a bit dodgy. I seem to be able to view most web pages okay but any attempts to stream or download seem to cause my computer to disconnect after a few seconds without fail. I'm using a Mac Mini with Airport Extreme and my router is a D-Link DL 524. I'm traditionally a PC user and I don't really know a whole lot about PCs so I'm completely lost here. Any advice would be really appreciated.
    Billy

    Billy,
The first thing I would try is taking the Extreme out of the equation.
Hook your computer directly up to the D-Link router and see if you can get your Internet and network working.
After that, then try adding the Extreme back into the network and see what happens.

  • I just updated my iPad to iOS7 and I'm trying to connect my FaceTime to with my Apple ID and it's tells me that "Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again" but I clearly have connection when I can get on safari with no problem

I did the update On both my iPad and my phone and the phone is working just fine but my iPad is being complicated. Haha can someone pleases please please help me!!!!!!

Have you tried restarting the phone?  Hold both Home and Power buttons down until Apple logo appears and phone "reboots".
And have you tried resetting Network Settings?
Settings => General => Reset => Reset Network Settings
You will have to re-enter Wifi Passwords but it might help you get to a more solid connection on your phone.

  • Airport connecting to one computer but not another

Just set up my AirPort Extreme. It worked immediately on my Mac. When I went to set it up on another Mac the AirPort Extreme Utility could not find the base station when it scans and when I go to join the network using the AirPort icon on the top bar it allows me to click on the station but after I enter the password the OK button does not highlight itself so that I can click on it.
    Please help.

I used the Airport Utility to enable file sharing for each of my 3 Macs before connecting them. I don't know if this is necessary but I didn't have any problem
Go to Airport Utility - Disks - File Sharing (click file sharing and enter credentials for each computer l, select read and write access)

  • Airport connects to the router but wont get an internet connection until 20 minutes after

    Dear All,
My macbook connects to my router (at full strength), but the internet does not work or takes 20-30 minutes to start working. Other devices work fine, (including my iphone and a family HP laptop),
Please simplify your advice as much as possible.
    Kind Regards
    Michael

    Hi Duane,
    Thanks for the reply.
Yes, wireless mode is set to 802.11b/g
I did not enable a MAC list. I see that option on the router but am unsure of if I should enable it or how to do so.
    It says:
Tip: To discover new devices to be added, disable the MAC Filtering feature for one minute, then refresh this page. Once new devices are listed, re-enable the MAC Filtering feature and modify the list below.
You can also add a MAC address manually.
As I stated, I setup my MacBook with no problems. It immediately recognized the network and turning on DHCP the router assigned it an IP without a problem.
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • Airport Connects to WAP Network but not to internet

I have been using the same network and Airport Extreme Base station for about as long as I've had my computer (coming close to three years). It's never had an extended problem with it. Last week or so, it stopped allowing me to connect to the internet. Both the cable modem and base station are working properly to my knowledge and I have not changed any of the settings. I am able to connect to the base station and it tells me that I am connected through my network to the internet (through ethernet). However, when I click on the internet (any application) it just takes forever to load, whereas if I join a different, unsecured network, the internet works just fine.
Not sure if this is related but I also am having trouble with wired internet connections. I bring my computer to school and plug it into the school connection in my lab and the internet works, but the "built-in ethernet" does not seem to be present at all times and at others it does not detect the network.
I am not very good with setting up IP addresses and the like so I was unable to use the troubleshooting page to help me with this problem. However, I am competent in fixing other kinds of issues, so if anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear.
    G4 Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Same issues, worked fine for a year, no sudden changes etc. No no internet IP assigned, strange thing is that the WAN spits out a connection to my VOIP phone.
    What gives?

Try resetting your iPod touch first.  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
