Wow, ok, sounds like you are on the exact same path that I'm on. I'm a WOW player also, have had my iMac since 2008 (and play wow alot, raiding, etc) and recently it fried it's graphics card. I just replied to your thread about HDDs... so please see that response.
I'm convinced it's a heat issue and I have a feeling the latest OSX update may have changed something about the fan speed that caused extra heat to build up. Just a theory.
Anyway, your options are very limited for "fixing" a screwed up graphics card. Hopefully you have AppleCare, otherwise you're looking at ~$500 to fix this.
I'm not going to bother. Just bought a new monitor and graphics card for my 4y.o. Windows machine and will be using that from now on. I'll miss the Apple display and the operating system, but the hardware doesn't make me happy at all.

I think my ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB graphics card has failed...
This is a MacPro 1,1 (2006). We're on our yacht in a French territory, South Pacific, so local support is non-obtainium. I would appreciate any advice on how I can confirm my graphics card is dead.
I have only 23" Apple Cinema Display for testing. The display works great on MBP, so that end is good.
The MacPro seems to boot normally - AFAIK based on startup sounds, fan, RAM LED diagnostic lights.

invoke Safe Mode (hold down the Shift key at Startup).
This performs a five minutes or so Disk Utility ( Repair Disk) on the boot drive, then demands your userId and password, even if you normally auto-login.
Safe Mode only loads the absolutely essential Drivers, and the graphics drivers are not considered essential. So screen re-draw may be slow, but you can check your email, surf a little, do many operations that do not require graphics acceleration.
Edit movies? Probably not.
Case B) your screen completely blank
If the power-on light flashes in a pattern, that indicates not enough good RAM to start up.
If no power light flashing, you need some function you can invoke that will show a non-graphics result.
The Caps Lock light on the keyboard is under software Control. If it works, at least the SMC controller that talks to the keyboard is working.
Holding down Control while pressing the Eject key on the keyboard brings up this familiar dialog box, whether you can see it or not:
any key except:
R for Restart;
S for Sleep;
Esc for cancel;
and return for the default Shut Down
should cause the System Beep sound. S should Sleep it, and the power light should shortly indicate that it is sleeping. Any key will then wake it up. -
KDE4 compositing no longer works with Intel graphics card
I recently upgraded to the new intel graphics card drivers and when I started KDE4, I got a black screen. I disabled compositing through the kwinrc file, but I want it back! Here's my xorg.conf

I have two graphics cards in my PC . after I had to reinstall windows again has been slower pc and stuff not play 4k footage . Can you help me find out about it " Raks " graphics card has stopped working ?
I'm not aware of any, not to say that there aren't any issues.
it may have nothing to do with ntpd, there are a lot of things running.
ntpd just happen to make the log entry at the same time as the panic.
I would check to see if there are any updates available for you system.
if this is the first time that this has happened. it may be (pick one):
cosmic rays
sun spots
the trilateral commission
if this happens more frequently and that traces look the same, then
there may be a real problem that needs to be looked into further. -
I believe my graphic card has just gone out
I have a 2008 Mac Pro Tower and (I believe) the graphic card has just gone out. I can still access the tower remotely (via home sharing for Apple TV, etc) but the direct monitor is showing a crazy squiggle pattern (usually about five minutes after the machine initially boots). I've checked, and it's not an issue with the monitor itself.
If this alone was the issue, I'd feel 99.9% sure I could replace the video card.
But in addition to the video issue (during those five minutes before the video goes out) the Mac Pro is having random 10 second mini freezes where the mouse or an application launch suddenly stops.
I'm hoping this mini freezing problem is ALSO related to the graphics card issue. I'd hate to spend the money on the card only to learn that it doesn't still resolve half the problem.
Can anyone say whether video card issues could also cause the processor to have clunk issues?

How can you tell if your video/graphics card is failing?
I have been playing World of Warcraft for over 7 months now (insert geek jokes here), and I have never experienced the problems that I have been experiencing with WoW this weekend.
I was hoping that it was just a connection/internet issue with WoW, but when i play on my laptop (and older Powerbook G4), screen loads aren't slow like they are on my Intel iMac.
Yesterday and today have been horrible. I'll get disconnected at least 4-5 times (which NEVER happens) and when I am finally logged into my account for game play, it's horrible lag. And even then, it takes a while for the background or other characters to load.
I'm worried that it's my video/graphics card and might be failing. How would I know if this was the case?
I am still hoping it's just a connectivity issue and has nothing to do with my card. But I don't know at this point.
I'm very frustrated.
Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

SuzanneWow, ok, sounds like you are on the exact same path that I'm on. I'm a WOW player also, have had my iMac since 2008 (and play wow alot, raiding, etc) and recently it fried it's graphics card. I just replied to your thread about HDDs... so please see that response.
I'm convinced it's a heat issue and I have a feeling the latest OSX update may have changed something about the fan speed that caused extra heat to build up. Just a theory.
Anyway, your options are very limited for "fixing" a screwed up graphics card. Hopefully you have AppleCare, otherwise you're looking at ~$500 to fix this.
I'm not going to bother. Just bought a new monitor and graphics card for my 4y.o. Windows machine and will be using that from now on. I'll miss the Apple display and the operating system, but the hardware doesn't make me happy at all.

Dell Studio 17 Graphic Card is not performing well, Can I update the driver
I just purchased Dell Studio s17-169B. The graphic card in this laptop is Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD. However, when I check graphic driver through device manager, I have found that driver is for Mobile Intel 4 series express chipset family with version 7.15.10.1576. My question is: can I download Dell Studio 1737 Intel Mobile Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD Driver A03 to update my current gtaphic driver so that the graphic display can be improved? Otherwise, I may return this laptop back to Bestbuy. Thanks for your input.
Define "not performing well"...
If you're playing 3D games, you will find that the 4500MHD is going to be lacking in general regardless of the driver installed. Any Intel GMA series integrated graphics solution is going to be at the bottom of the barrel in terms of 3D performance. In most cases, the only thing worse than a GMA series accelerator is an older GMA series accelerator.

I purchased a photo program (OnOne Perfect Photo Suite 9) that keeps crashing. OnOne indicates the the Intel card is not supported. I have an Envy 17t j100. There was a series of posts slightly over a year ago regarding the fact that the graphics card is not replaceable, but the individual who posted the question insisted it was. I am just following up to see if there is any resolution to the inadequacy of the Intel card.

Beyond the Intel HD is soldered on the board did you check the Photo program to see if there was a update to it? What your descrbing sounds more like the program itself is the cause and not Intel HD graphics. Programs crashing would indicate bad install or your installing and not updating before using the program? So uninstall it and reinstall the program and before using go to the site and download their update or ask them how come your program keeps crashing. This will further eliminate where the program is coming from.

In terms of Graphics rendering the Discrete graphics AMD Radeon is the one for the job.
But your system is configured to auto switch the graphics when needed.
Like When you turn on the computer, the Intel is the one processing everything even in word processing software to playing audio.
But in case you launch an application that needs heavy graphics rendering The AMD Radeon will kick in and take over Automatically.

Movie Maker can't start, graphics card has latest drivers and Direct X10
Hi, I'm attempting to get Movie Maker to start on a 64 bit notebook which I believe has the correct specs and has latest video card drivers and direct X10 or 11, can't remember. How can I further troubleshoot this?

Older graphics cards will often not support some of the newer technologies, even if if they have the latest drivers. Is this your issue?
Also, You may need to install DirectX 9.0c runtime components if you are running Windows 7. This will add some components necessary for programs that use older versions of DirectX, which includes Windows Live 2011 Photo Gallery and Movie Maker.

Photoshop CC - Graphic cards for smooth performance?
I am running PSCC on my main desktop computer. I find that it lags significantly enough to impair my workflow especially when using brushes (default ones).
I have also tested PSCC on a Win 8 gaming laptop and it runs smoothly there.
I am currently using an Nvidia GFX 465. The rest of the system, in brief, is a Win 7 Pro 64 bit system with 12G ram, with 75% dedicated to PS. I have tried setting the memory prefs to 'Tall and Thin' and 'Big and Flat'; the larger cache tile size seems to help a little, although it was working better with 'Tall and Thin' in CS6. Open GL is enabled; Open CL is enabled, draw mode set to Basic (Advanced slows things).
i am interested in hearing what graphic cards folks who claim they have no performance issues in PS CC are using. I am wondering if upgrading my main computer's graphic card will help, and perhaps there is a clue if I knew what cards were working fine with the program.You may well find that a newer video card will be helpful. However, it may not solve everything for you...
Painting with large brushes also relies heavily on CPU speed, and thus your system's responsiveness will be somewhat dependent on how fast your CPU's individual core speed is.
Does the "gaming laptop" have much newer / faster CPU technology than your desktop system? CPUs have been getting much faster in the past few years, even though clock speeds haven't been changing much (basically new the new CPUs do more per clock cycle).
To run Photoshop best, especially when painting with large brushes (e.g., hundreds to thousands of pixels in size), you really need both modern CPU technology and a good graphics card (as well as very good disk speed).
Personally, for the past few years I've been more fond of ATI cards than nVidia, and I presently have a moderately powerful Visiontek ATI Radeon HD 7850 card, which (with ATI's latest driver release) works very well with Photoshop CC.

A big company like Apple should have a solution to this issue, you have to....
Any thoughts!!Please tell us the year/specifications of your iMac so we can determine whether it is worth/compatible with an upgrade.
While it is more than possible to upgrade an iMac's GPU, (people say its soldered to the mb, trust me its not as I have taken mine apart for myself).
However most iMac users will never perform an upgrade such as this for 2 reasons:
1: The mere process of scouring the web for a specially flashed Mobile MX A/B sized card suitable for installation.
2: The cost, it is expensive and will most likely be more than half the price of the original cost of the unit.
However if you really want to tinker with it, i would take a look over iFixit teardowns/guides to see if you feel comfortable enough dealing with the insides of your machine.
I personally will be saving money for a better speced computer, rather than forking out a fortune for a minor GPU upgrade, and depending on your budget/age of your machine you should probably too.

Thats right. Toshiba offers modified and tested drivers only. Due to specific design and cooling system Toshiba must take care about hardware protection, especially about overheating.
This is the reason why offered display driver is modified and dont allow GPU to run on highest level that can be reason for hardware damage.
If you are not satisfied with notebooks performance you should try to upgrade RAM to maximum level.
