If Your Screen Sharing Stops Working, Read This

SCENARIO: I have a network of Macs. On my main machine (a Mac Pro), I have set up bookmarks in Safari that link to the Screen Sharing URLs for other Macs on my network (Mac minis, MacBook Air). For example:
vnc://192.168.1.51
vnc://192.168.1.52
So I can kick off a Screen Sharing session with one of those Macs simply by clicking the appropriate bookmark in Safari.
PROBLEM: Sometimes when I do this, one of two things happens... either the Screen Sharing program launches in the dock but the window for the other Mac does not appear at all, or the Screen Sharing program launches and a small black window (with nothing visible inside) appears. Killing and restarting Screen Sharing does not help, and restarting the remote Mac does not help.
SOLUTION: One way to solve this problem is to restart the Mac where you are attempting to use Screen Sharing. But this is overkill; it works because it incorporates the second, easier solution to the problem:
1. Launch the Activity Monitor program.
2. In the Process Name list, look for "NetAuthAgent". It may show as "Not Responding".
3. Select NetAuthAgent, and then click Quit Process (the red stop sign button at the top of the Activity Monitor window). Then, click Force Quit.
Your Screen Sharing should now work.
It appears that as part of connecting to the remote Mac, your Mac must authenticate itself... and NetAuthAgent is part of this process. If this program freezes, hangs, or locks for any reason, the authentication will not work, and you cannot use Screen Sharing. Killing NetAuthAgent is harmless, as far as I can tell, and it will automatically relaunch the next time it is needed.
For anyone else having problems with Screen Sharing not working correctly, I hope this information helps.

having related problem with NetAuthAgent
"loginwindow" process in activity monitor is Not Responding constantly (through warm and cold reboots)
this causes a number of problems, slow network performance, hangs, no ability to restart/shutdown
killing "NetAuthAgent" is the only way to make "loginwindow" process responsive again
and restores lost functionalities
having this problem across three networked machines (macpro, macbook pro, mac mini) all running 10.5.2
have reapplied the 10.5.2 combo upgrade but no fix. only witnessed this problem since 10.5.2

  • Screen sharing stopped working after last update

    Hello all,
I have run software update yesterday, and there were about 10 downloads (I run this weekely, so these must have been new ones). The thing is that after installing all the updates, one of the features that I use more frequently, screen sharing, stopped working properly. I have a Mac Book Pro and an I Mac, both running on Snow Leopard, and screen sharing has always worked just fine, but not after the latest update.
I checked passwords and they are all right, and also checked sharing properties and all seems to be fine. I can share files all right, but for screen sharing now is only possible by setting the option "anyone may request permission to control screen" (under sharing>screen sharing>computer settings) to on, and ask for authorization each time I need to share screens, not good, mainly if you have the computers in different rooms.
Finally, I own an Me account, so I tried sharing screen via Back to my Mac, but it didn't work either.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks a lot,
    Luis

    Problem solved!
After working with Apple, I have an answer. It looks like the 10.10.2 update changed your firewall settings. Try this:
    System Preferences>Security and Privacy>Firewall Options
Scroll down the list till you find "screensharingd". If it's marked as block in coming connections, change it to allow incoming connections.
Be sure to reboot your computer and you should be good to go!

  • IChat screen sharing stopped working

Me and my girlfriend have identical Macbook Pros, and we've been utilizing the screen share capability of iChat for about a month and a half now. Today her capability to screen share stopped working. Nothing has changed recently, we haven't changed any system settings (that we know of) my screen share is still an option, but her screen share is greyed out. Screen sharing enabled is checked on her video option so we really have no idea what else to do. Any ideas?

    Hi,
She should do a Speed test
http://www.speedtest.net/ (Use the Yellow Star in the main window)
Are the reported speeds near what she pays for ?
(they are typically shown at about 80% of what the ISP claim to supply)
Try cutting the power to the computer, any router and modem then start them up Modem first, then router then Computer, allowing things to be come established at each device and see if things improve.
If that does not work she should delete com.apple.ichat.plist and then restart iChat.

  • HP pavilion dv6 touchpad stopped working (read this if you have dropped your computer)!

Hello, this is not a question it is advice for people having touchpad issues with their dv6 (I've noticed a quite a few posts). My touchpad suddenly completely stopped working one day (didn't respond to anything that I did).
Most of the forums I've been to (actually, all of them... and they were many) ask you to try reinstalling the driver. However, if you did not recently uprage your OS or make any such major changes this is not likely to be the issue.
Try going to device manager. If your touchpad is not showing up under the mouse and pointer devices section (it should say Synaptics something or other) then it means that either something is broken OR your touchpad came unseeded.
For me, it was the second option (I drop my laptop... occasionally). The cable for the touchpad is held in place by a little plastic lever-like clamp. It can easily become loose, so try this out before taking your computer into a repair shop (and loosing it for weeks, not to mention the price if you're not under warranty!)
    Three easy steps:
    1) take the removable bottom cover off (that little plastic bit in the center where your hard drive is). For my model (6145dx), it just snaps off (with a flathead screw driver or other tool for leverage). You might have to unsrew a few things, but it should be easy.
    2) Take out the hard drive (held in place by 4 screws in most cases). You do not need to disconnect the cables leading to the hard drive! Just pull it out and lay it off to the side.
    3) Toward the very front of your computer (right under where your hard drive was, and where the touchpad is on the top cover) you will see the ribbon cables coming from your keyboard, touchpad, etc. Give them a little wiggle (just pull the plastic tabs that stick up. If one of them moves, then you need to re-clamp it! Push the cable all the way in and push down the lever.
Super easy! Should solve all your problems!

So my touchpad wasn't working and I have an HP dv6-6135dx. It started being messed up shortly after I took my PC apart to upgrade the screen. Sometimes it worked perfectly, sometimes it was completely unresponsive, sometimes the ring around the touchpad was lit, other times it wasn't etc.... It got worse and worse to the point where the touch pad almost never worked.
I followed this guide, and it didn't fix the problem; however, this got me thinking, and I pulled the keyboard out and reseated the touchpad cable where it connects right under there. BAM works perfectly. THANK YOU so much for this post, for some reason I didn't think to reseat the cable... I must have not plugged it back in completely when I took my laptop apart. You can find the service manual for the dv6t here Its in the first post

  • File sharing and screen sharing stop working suddenly

I have been using file sharing and screen sharing without any issues between my mac mini (10.7 Lion) and MBA (10.8 ML). However, both suddenly stopped working the other day - that is, I saw the mac mini on my MBA's list of Devices, but when I clicked on a drive or on screen sharing, it just said could not connect. I rebooted the computer and they started working again...but a few hours later suddenly stopped. I toggled those options on/off in the Sharing section of Sys Prefs, and they started working fine again...but then stopped again. It seems no matter what I do, file and screen sharing just stop working after a short period of time after being enabled.
    Ideas?

Turns out the problem was that I had a daisey-chained ethernet switch. My mac mini was on an ethernet switch that was not visible to my wireless network. Make sure that your ethernet switch is somehow directly connected to whatever is serving as your DHCP server, then your wireless devices should see it.

  • Screen sharing stopped working after update to 10.10.2

After updating to 10.10.2, I have the following issues:
    1. Screen sharing no longer works between my Mac Pro and my Macbook Pro. Both are running 10.10.2
    2. When transferring large files between computers, I get a -36 error about not being able to read or write some of the files.
    Any ideas?

  • Screen Sharing Stopped Working Due to Slow Network

I have been sharing the screen of a friend with an iMac. I have an MBP and both our computers have all updates. After I updated her iMac I now longer can share her screen. She can still share mine and I can share my screen with others and I can share other users screens. She is the only one whose screen I can't share.
This started after a number of updates were installed on her iMac. The Connection Doctor says her iMac does not have the capability to share because of slow network connection. I tested the connection and it does not appear to be slow. I have tried a cable yet because it is pretty far from the modem and I need to get a longer cable.
I changed all settings on both computers to the recommendations I read here. Quicktime 1.5 MBps, ichat 500 kb bandwidth, set security to specific and allow ichat. Still cannot share screen of iMac and "slow network" given as reason.

    Hi,
If the Quicktiem setting had to be changed iChat will need restarting to "See" that new Speed.
If that has been done you could try deleting com.apple.ichat.plist where this info is held.
WARNING this loses all the other settings made in the Preferences (Fonts, Colours, Balloon or text background colour, Saved Transcripts, Menu Bar Icon, Some iChat 4 specific things - Remember Open Chats Across launch, Name spotting.) and Saved Status Messages.

Concerning: VGA monitors using an Aluminum Powerbook G4 PowerPC 2004 15"-screen 1.5Ghz
The DVI (converted to VGA) video output stopped working on this computer after 9 years of service. This raises question 1:
Is there any way of fixing this? I've tried the usual: triple checked all vga cables & devices through trial & error. Bought a new DVI-VGA adapter. Reset PRAM, PMU, etc. Nothing works. Something is probably damaged, because my KVM switch was not working unless I hot-reseated the vga cable into it, leading to this DVI port, and that is pretty rough stuff.
    Question 2 (related):
This dovetails into this: Can I drive a VGA monitor with the s-video output port on this computer. It would take an s-video (male)-to-15-pin-VGA adapter. Has anyone does this? So far, I haven't even found the adapter mentioned anywhere.
    Thanks for reading this.
    el7

Thanks for the useful feedback, Knucklesmac. I agree. I must have blown something on the logic board -- because I had a faulty old KVM switch that would not switch between computers without some nasty hot-plugging/unplugging the VGA video cables. (wince!). It's like when Dizzy Dean ruined his arm because a line drive hit him in the foot and he readjusted his mechanics around the injury. I take the blame because this has been a great computer, and does not deserve any blame.
If it will help anyone else reading this thread, C2G (née Cables to Go) has some interesting ideas for still getting external video out of this computer:
    -USB-to-VGA
    http://www.cablestogo.com/product/30545
-Convert s-video or composite video signals to high resolution VGA
    http://www.cablestogo.com/product/40971
The price range is $75-$85, which doesn't make horse sense to me for such an old computer -- which has a lot of life in it anyway, because its own 15" monitor is not chopped liver.

  • Screen Sharing Not Working

I have screen sharing turned on and it works fine when I'm in the house in front of the computer on the same network, but when I'm at the office trying to share the screen it is not working. I'm I doing anything wrong?
I have the Macbook Pro hooked up to my TV (main monitor). I have the computer screen on "never sleep" (computer screen is damaged from motorcycle accident-can't damage any more) and the keyboard lights turns off after 5 seconds of none use.

I'm leaving my personal MacBook pro at the house and using my office MacBook Pro trying to share the screen. I'm using the assigned vnc://ipaddress to login. What I mean by not working is that I get a message stating that my computer cannot be found. I drive home from the office (I don't do anything to the house computer) and sit in my yard and screen sharing works.
Most likely when you are in your yard, you are connecting to your home WiFi network and this by definition is the same as being in the living room.
If I need to configure my home router to port forwarding I'm not sure I know what to do and how to do it.
Depends on the make and model of router. A Google search for "Port Forward yourroutermake yourroutermodel" will most likely find instructions.
I'm talking my Mom, who lives in Louisiana, into buying a Mac and I told her I could help in Arkansas by screen sharing. So, is Port Forwarding a default feature on most routers?
Yes, most routers allow Port Forwarding, however, for your Mom there are other options.
    a) Get 2 Free AOL Instant Messaging (AIM) accounts. Give one to your Mom. Now use iChat and in Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) there is an iChat option where you can ask your Mother to share her screen or she can click a button to export her screen to you.
    b) If your mother is not going to be around when you work on her Mac, you could install an iChat add-on called Chax which has an option to always accept requests for screen sharing. Your Mother would have to be very careful about who she allows in your iChat "Buddy List". This is also an option for your work vs home situation.
    c) Skype has a Mac OS X beta version that includes Screen sharing. You could use this for your Mom. No home router issues.
    d) You can subscribe to Apple's MobileMe service and use the Back-to-My-Mac feature. You must make both your systems and your Mom's Mac part of your account. Is not suppose to have home router issues, but Back-to-My-Mac works best with Airport Extreme or Express routers.
    e) You can use LogMeIn.com for screen sharing. No home router issues. However, LogMeIn.com is not as fast. However, it is fairly reliable and easy to get setup.
    f) You can Port Forward the screen sharing ports in your and your Mom's home router.
I would like to have control of the mac at home and my Mom's new mac. How screen sharing works when I am at the house is exactly what I need. I see the other MacBook Pro in a window on my MacBook Pro computer and I have full control of the Mac.
You can get full control, you just need to deal with your home router.
Also note: Depending on how your Work network is setup, you may nave to deal with corporate firewalls that may not be happy passing your screen sharing requests.
So do you have a corporate firewall? Do you have to configure a Proxy server in System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> Proxy? If you do, then you may have additional hurdles connecting from work to home.
However, going from your home to your Mom's Mac only needs to deal with Port Forwarding on your Mom's home router.

  • Really tired of screen sharing not working after upgrade to 10.10

I have tried everything I can think of but I simply cannot get screen sharing to work any longer when I am not within my home network.
I NEED this to work.  Anyone else having huge problems getting screen sharing working when away from their home network?
Anything at all I can try at this point?  Sometimes the share screen button doesnt even show, sometime it does and then says it cant
come up, sometimes my mac at home doesnt even show up in the Shared sidebar area.

I've had lots of issues with my Macs picking up new names eg. 'iMac (2)' instead of 'iMac' which led to sharing issues (screen sharing, AFP etc).  I've set up new DHCP IP reservations on my router (Time Capsule) in the hope it will stop happening.

  • Screen Sharing not working continuously in Mountain Lion

For some reason, I cannot get Screen Sharing to work continuously. I could not get it to work at all (even though I veried the settings were correct), and after reading some posts here, I rebooted my MacBook Pro and voila! it worked - at least on my home network. However, once I get to work, I can no longer connect.
    Any ideas?

And how are you trying to connect with your home Mac from work?
Are you using Apple's iCloud Back-to-My-Mac (BTMM) feature?  It should handle getting through home routers?
Does you work have a Firewall and proxy servers in place?  They are going to block any attempt at accessing the outside world except via corporate approved networking channels, which frequently do not include Screen Sharing.  If this is the case, I might suggest TeamViewer.com as it has an option for setting a Proxy and if the company has not disabled accessing the TeamViewer.com URL, it might work.
If no corporate firewall and proxy server, and you are not using BTMM, then do you have a home router?  Did you setup port forwarding for port 5900 from the internet to your home Mac?  <http://portforwarding.com>
What address are you trying to connect with?  I you have home router you need to use the IP address assigned by your ISP to your home router.  If you do a Google search for "what is my ip address", Google will tell you your Public IP address.  You need this for your home router.
BTMM and TeamViewer.com avoid the need to know your Public IP, and port forwarding.  Corporate firewalls are a beast of their own, and have to be handled on a case by case basis.  Some will let you get through, some will not.
If you find you are going to be using the Public IP address of your home router, then you want to get a free dynamic DNS name for you home Mac from No-IP.com or DynDNS.org and then run the dynamic DNS updating utility provided by the dynamic DNS service on your home Mac to keep the dynamic DNS name updated each time your IPS changes your public IP address.

  • TS3274 why would touch screen just stop working?

The touch screen just stopped working, it is charged, can not turn off, can't do anything with screen.  Has anyone else had this problem and any suggestions
as to how to fix.  Thanks in advance

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • IChat Screen Sharing Stops when Switching Between Displays

Hi. Have been doing iChat quite nicely with my Dad for years and now I have a problem. Running current Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on both Macs, iChat 5.0.1. I usually hop onto his screen to help him solve problems, answer questions, do updates, etc. Until very recently, I have been able to switch between his desktop and mine by clicking on the small alternate display window. I could work on his computer and mine by simply switching between them in this manner. Now, suddenly, iChat screen sharing stops when I click on my display in the small window. This action returns me to my display, but the screen sharing session ends and I need to request it again. Any idea what might be going on here? I'm stumped. Thanks.

    Hi,
Is there any chance you are clicking on the top left hand corner (where the red blob would be) as this will Quit Screen Sharing ?

  • IPad home sharing stopped working w/ ios7

Home sharing on my iPad just hangs.
I have a large video library, so it took awhile to load it under ios6, but now it has stopped working altogether. The little wheel just keeps spinning around and around, then after about 5 minutes the video app crashes. There's some Quality Apple Software™ for you...
I've tried logging out of home sharing & logging back in; power cycling all devices, etc. I'm pretty sure the problem isn't with iTunes, because my Apple TV is loading up the entire video library in a matter of just a few seconds.
Is there ANYTHING I can do to get home sharing to work on this iPad 3?

I am having this exact same issue on an iPAd 2 and iPad mini in videos. I also have this issue in Music on a 4s. After many attempts, turning on/off home sharing in itunes, rebooting, and esetting the entire network settings in the 4s, because Messages wasn't sending.. The 4s is finally filling in the circle as it tries to connect. I have a large video and audio library (Apple's seen a lot of income from me), but the 20min to load n the 4s is absurd.
Still can't get Video to connect to home sharing on either iPad. I've been trying many times for this 'magic' attempt to happen, but so far no luck. Very frustraed right now.
