'Ignore Adjustment Layers' when auto selecting

Auto select - being able to highlight layers based on where you click in the image, is a very useful option. Especially for design based work.
What I want is a way to specify the auto-selecting of active layer content only (this could be pixel or vector of course). And for it not to pick up adjustment layers. This could be an additional option in the move tool options bar. It would also be picked up with the Command and Shift command shortcuts (control on PC) which are so useful as they are.
Unfortunately for those of us that work with very complex layered structures, with many adjustment layers at the top level - auto select will also pick up WHITE areas on masks which have content other than 100% white or black. Its actually quite rare than you want to highlight adjustment layers in this way, and it really gets in the way. It very quickly becomes impossible to auto-acivate layers underneath any masked adustment layers
I am also aware of the contextual Control click and choose any layer under the icon, but this is not a replacement.

A workaround to avoid auto selecting adjustment layers is to lock the adjustment layer.
But an option in the Move tool will be more elegant solution.

  • Ignore Adjustment Layers option for the Eyedropper tool

The Clone Stamp tool has a button in its options that says "Turn on to ignore adjustment layers when cloning". It is hard to imagine as to why Adobe didn't do the same with the Eyedropper, it is equally important not only for creating artworks from scratch but photo retouching too.
When the Eyedropper is set to sample from All Layers, there should be also an option to ignore adjustment layers above the currently selected layer.
The lack of this feature in Photoshop makes art creation and photo retouching extremely difficult when adjustment layers are used.
    To reproduce the problem:
Create several layers with some colors or images in them.
Add one or more adjustment layers on top that change the colors of all layers.
Select a layer to paint on.
Set the Eyedropper tool to sample from All Layers.
Pick the Brush tool, hold Alt to get to the Eyedropper and pick a color from any of the layers and paint.
The result is a different color because the Eyedropper picked the adjusted color and this makes painting and retouching in this natural way impossible.
The above steps is basically the most common workflow when a user paints or retouches a certain layer using the Brush tool while constantly picking colors form other areas of the image by holding Alt to get to the Eyedropper  tool, similar to using the Clone Stamp Tool,

Even a »Current and Below«-setting for the Eyedropper Tool would be helpful, I guess.

  • IPhone 5 showing no network when auto selected for carrier, select manually signal ok, software of hardware problem?

    Hi,
I have a iPhone 5, since day one I have had poor reception, 1 bar, when my daughters Samsung S3 has 3 bars, same network btw. It makes me feel I bought the wrong phone.  If one more person at Three or Apple tell me to restore my phone to factory settings, I am going to scream. Also when network is selected as auto, the phone, when it feels like it goes to no service.  It is only when I select the network manually, does it get a signal.
The phone is still under Apple's 90 day support, I was reminded today by a Apple rep of this. After the 90 days I would have to buy Applecare for any software related problem.  So basically if Apple do not ressolve the problem with my "not fit for purpose phone" within the 90 days, I will have to pay for it. This is not good customer service Apple, I am someone who has believed in your productsas I have an iMac and iPad. I waited years to get an iPhone because I had the 3GS, which I thought was crap, the iPhone 5 convinced me to give the iPnone another try, I have had nothing but problems with it, previous phone was a Samsung Galaxy Note, no problems at all.
Has any one else had this problem with the iPhone 5?, I thought it might be Apple's dreaded aerial problem that caused so many problems on the iPhone 4.
I would be grateful for some suggestions, I have already been advised to use it as an expensive doorstop, not funny.
    Many thanks.

Well I had the exact same problem with my Iphone 5s, I tried many things such as turning the airplane mode on/off, restarting the device and also did a network settings reset. Nothing helped.
The next thing I did was to do a general reset via iTunes to factory settings (Made a backup first. Very important if you can connect to iTunes, it's a MUST). When the phone booted-up again, I had to ''activate the phone. But to activate it, I needed a connection with a network. But that was the whole problem so I was stuck and couldn't do anything with the device.
So I called the Apple support centre. We tried a few things, they all dindn't work. The last option (which worked for me) was to do a recovery (I have no idea what this reset is called)  via the device+ iTunes.
To perform the reset, please follow these steps and hopefully it will work for you as well.
    1. Open iTunes
    2. Connect your USB cable to the computer, NOT to your device yet.
    3. Power Off your device, and be sure that it is Off.
    4. Press the home and hold it.
    5. Connect the USB cable to your phone. You will see a iTunes logo on your device, you can release the home button.
    6. Do a recovery via iTunes. iTunes will now recover the phone.
If it doesn't work the first time, try again. I had to do it twice and luckily it worked the second time.
I hope that this will help, Good luck!

  • AutoSelect Without Adjustment Layers

    Hello,
I am using the Move Tool with Autoselect enabled, meaning that when this tool is active, I just left click anywhere in the document and it will automatically select the layer that the left click occurred ontop of. It will always select the top-most layer.
The problem is, my very top layer is an adjustment layer.  So this tool is now rendered useless, because it's always selecting the Adjustment layer because it's always the top-most layer. I can't get it to select any layers beneath the adjustment layer.
is there a way around this, to maybe have the Move Tool (AutoSelect enabled) to ignore adjustment layers in this instance?

thanks guys - sorry for the delayed reply but I was having a hard time trying to find my way around the new forums
ctrl-clicking is okay, but I work with a large amount of layers that I bounce back and forth between, so prefer to find a way to directly switch to another layer without having to search through the pop-up layers menu - it becomes very tedious when the menu pops up with a selection of 20 layers and then I need to search through that list. At least with the auto-select tool I could jump right to another layer by left clicking and then deal with it from there.
If that's not an option, is there a way to hide all adjustment layers (toggle on/off maybe) with a keyboard shortcut or script? I've researched the forums but haven't found anything yet.. if there is a way to do that, then I might be able to get around this issue..

  • Adjustment layers not working in CMYK MODE?

    Hi Guys
I have a photoshop issue and was wondering if you could shed any light on the matter?
When ever i set my document to CMYK mode, some of my adjustment layers become 'un-selectable'  such as the Black & White, vibrance and the exposure adjustment layers?
They work fine in RGB mode but was curious if this was common place?
    Any information woould be greatful

but surely the black and white one does? or am i wrong there?
    It would seem you are.
You can still use Hue/Saturation as a work-around.
how do i go about finding that particular thread?
That’s no thread but a headline in the Help; personally I prefer to download the pdf:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/photoshop/cs/using/index.html
I am working in cmyk as the poster i am producing is for print, so the document is put into that mode for that purpose.
If you are using/combining photographic images this approach may not be ideal and incurs the risk of overshooting the TAC.
On the other hand if you have lots of text, fine lines or other elements that are supposed to, for example, print in pure black working in CMYK would be called for.

  • Help, where is "Ignore accidental input when typing" checkbox on the PC?

    Hi all,
I'm new to Macs and just got myself a new MBP Corei7. It's running Windows 7 great, however I find the track pad just too sensitive when I type on the keyboard, I keep inadvertently touching the track pad with my palm or thumb as I type causing the cursor to jump.
Under the Bootcamp help, there's an entry:
"Change the following under “Palm Rejection”:
Ignore accidental input when typing: Select to make the computer ignore the trackpad while you type."
But my Trackpad tab in the Bootcamp settings within Windows 7 doesn't have this option/check box. I made sure that I did have the latest BootCamp 3.1 drivers. But I can't find it anywhere. It says on a support thread here on the Mac side that that option has been removed on the Mac side of the Track Pad settings and enable by default (on late 2009 MBP)- can anyone confirm that for the PC side of things, because I've already done 4 typos on this message due to accidentally touching the pad while typing!
    Thanks,

Upon further examination, I don't believe it's accidental trackpad touching that is the culprit here. I am typing in such a way that I am very VERY mindful of not touching the trackpad and occasionally I still get the "cursor jump" to another portion of the screen (even though I am aware that I have no part of my hand in contact with the trackpad. I fact I believe that "ignore accidental input when typing" is enabled by default across both PC and Mac trackpad drivers, I can rest my palms and upper thumbs on the track pad and it still has no effect on my typing. I think this cursor jumping might be something else. If I un-check all the trackpad options in the BootCamp track pad tab (ie; tapping...) then the problem goes away - which leads me to believe maybe the tapping is sensing some part of my hand (even though its not touch) that the poximity of some part of my hand is triggering a click to some portion of my screen.

  • How do you turn off the auto select behavior when working with shape layers?

How do you turn off the auto select behavior when working with shape layers?
I am using either of the path selection tools to select only some of the paths on the layer. I have the proper layer targeted. I have the selection too auto select option turned off.
If another layer has a path in that area, that layer becomes auto targeted and I get the wrong path. Turning off the layer is the only way to avoid this but then I have to  turn on the layer back on between making my selection and transforming to use the other layer as guide. Is there any way to stop this auto select? Locking the other layer does not stop the auto select, just prevents editing.

As far as i know the move tool options don't have any effect on the path selection tools.
You might try clicking on one of the path points or on the path itself with one of path selection tools and if you want to select multiple points
you can shift click with the Direct Selection Tool or Alt click to select the entire path.

  • Why are my eyedropper targets changing when I select my adjustment layer?

Consider this simple document with 2 layers and an adjustment layer:
Note the eyedropper targets. They read as expected:
Now, observe what happens when I click my adjustment layer (this is a new Levels adjustment that has NOT YET BEEN TOUCHED - so there should be NO CHANGE)
It doesn't matter whether the adjustment layer or its layer mask are selected, the results are the same.
    Here are my eyedropper settings:
Proof Colors is off. I can't think of any other setting to play with.
This looks like a pretty huge bug to me, and it's not something I remember from earlier versions. Does anyone know what's going on?

Thanks for the added clarifications Noel. Can you perhaps explain to me how the behaviour of the color sampler in the info palette is actually desirable?
Let's look at my example again. When I am trying to make an adjustment and I'm looking at my color sampler targets, I _must_ have my adjustment layer selected. Target #1 is pointed over a white pixel. Regardless of which layer I have selected, that pixel is white. I can't imagine a scenario in which the readout should be anything other than 255,255,255. That's not a feature, that's a design mistake.
If I want to see, in the readout, the value of the background image's pixel, then I should hide the layer that contains that white shape. Then, that pixel is no longer white, and the color sampler readout should reflect that. Makes sense.
If you truly and honestly believe that users are interested in the color that is a result of compositing all the layers below (and including) the currently selected adjustment layer when they are plaing with the adjustment layer controls, then the UI must temporarily hide any layers above that color sampler as soon as I select the adjustment layer. This is the only correct UX design in that scenario - so that the color sampler once again reflects exactly what is "true" - namely the pixel color on the screen that it is sampling.
And if you re-read that last paragraph you will intuitively know that that would be crazy. I mean, there's no way that a user would want to have the UI hide any layers just because he's clicked on the Adjustment Layer - he probably wants to see the adjustment in the context of the entire composition. If he wanted to hide those other layers, he'd do it himself.
I urge you to reconsider this from the perspective of a real-world user and consider logging this as a bug. I just can't see any way that it isn't a mistake.

  • When I select an adjustment layer I do not automatically get a mask.

Every adjustment layer tutorial that I watch suggests that when I select an adjustment layer I should get a mask with it.  I must have something set incorrect because in my case I must actually choose a mask manually.
    Any ideas?

Cs4/Cs5 look on the adjustments panel flyout menu and check add Mask by Default.
Cs2/Cs3 look at the Layers Palette options from the flyout menu.

  • Selective Color Adjustment Layers

Maybe someone can guide me on how to remedy these questions about Adjustments Layers changes in CS4:
    1. Selective Color adjustment.  When entering values manually, "undo" will now (in CS4) only undo the last digit (all other versions would undo the whole value just entered).  Exp: if I enter +25, and then want to immediately change to +10, pressing Command Z only will undo the "5", not the whole "+25".  This has been possible for over a dozen years, so not sure why it won't work now.
    2. Old key commands for cycling through each color in Selective Color no longer work in CS4. "Command 1" used to toggle Red, "Command 2" would toggle Yellow, etc.  Again, this has always been possible in other versions.

Okay, here's the link I found to the plugin and info on the changes.
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2008/10/shortcut_changes_in_cs4.html
sure change is good, but after 15+ years using the same keys (well most have been the same now since v4.0), having to pause for the first time and take 2 days to learn how to use something you have used everyday without hiccups on previous versiosn - it gets frustrating, and loses valuable time for yourself and clients.  How embarrassing to be in front of clients and realize you don't know how to bring up feathering because it both changed in the menu, and the key command no longer works...
    thanks again Mark

  • How to disable selecting adjustment layers

    Hello
When you're selecting layers directly from an image (using CTRL) you also select adjustment layers, so sometimes you have to lock this layer in order to get to the right layer.
It would be a lot easier to manipulate many layers (usually in my case, most of them have the adjustment layer setting 'attached' to them) if i wouldn't select these 'adjustments' when I click on the canvas.
Is it actually possible to do?
Hope I made some sense (english ain't my native tongue ;-))
    Cheers for your reply!

    Noel Carboni wrote:
Have you considered using the right mouse button (i.e., right-click) on the image to get a list of layers under the cursor, then selecting by name?
    -Noel
nah, thats whats Layers panel is for, innit?
I would like to be able to easily select layers by directly clicking on them (on canvas), which I am, but sometimes select the adjustment layer, though it only happens with the 'Exposure' one, for some reason.
its a silly little issue, but quite annoying when you wanna manipulate your composition very quickly/easily.
