Ignore Disk Ownership Problem

In Photoshop 6 I need to change my drive Ownership settings for scratch disk purposes and even though I set the lock setting in the 'Get Info' window after checking the 'Ignore Ownership' box it resets itself upon every boot. Is this a bug in the OS or should I be doing something else to lock this setting?

You're trying to ignore ownership on your boot drive, or on an external drive?
Trying to ignore ownership on the boot drive is ridiculous.  Surely Adobe can't be recommending that?  If they are, hit them upside the head with a crowbar.  Swing as hard as you can.

  • "Floating ownership" problem on eSATA DS4600

I have a Promise DS4600 unit that is hooked up with eSATA. Previously, I used System Preferences to move some user account home directories to this unit since some of them are just gigantic. It's worked great... until...
...somehow, this volume has acquired the "floating ownership" problem. The floating ownership problem is where the system shows the currently-logged on user as the owner of every file and directory inside the volume even though "ignore ownership on this volume" has been disabled for quite some time.
Does anyone have any idea how this happened or how to fix it? I'm trying to avoid a data move/permissions rework because the amount of data is huge (3 terabytes or so) and it would be difficult. I have a feeling there is a setting stuck, but I cannot find any data on it. I know there is a post about this issue on the SuperDuper! blog, but there is no information on how to fix it. They just talk about how they worked around the issue on their application.

  • ITunes Is Causing a Weird Disk Permissions Problem

After installing the new iTunes 11.1 on both of my Retina MBPs, I ran disk repair on both machines to correct any disk permission problems. There was a LONG list of errors so I ran repair on both computers. YET this has NOT solved the problem at all as the same LONG list of disk permission errors keep showing up. Below is what I copied from one of my computers. What the heck is all this? Anyone have a clue? Why is all this still persistent even after running disk permissions repair?

Although it’s immensely popular, repairing permissions is a waste of time unless you have a specific indication of a permission error involving system files, which is rare, or a boot failure. It is not a universal rite of healing for computers. It has traditionally spewed bogus warning messages that mean absolutely nothing.
The built-in help for Disk Utility reads in part:
If you see an alert or a message that says your permissions are set incorrectly, you can correct the disk’s permissions by clicking Repair Disk Permissions.
It’s justifiable, though rarely necessary, to repair permissions after running a third-party software installer, as defective installers have been known to damage the permissions of system files.

  • Disk permissions problems

Hi. I am having persistent disk permissions problems that do not seem to be able to repair. This is what I am getting:
    Verify permissions for “Macintosh HD”
    Reading permissions database.
Reading the permissions database can take several minutes.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner " has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/setregion" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Printers/IOMs/LPRIOM.plugin/Contents/MacOS/LPRIOMHelper" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.
    Permissions verification complete
Any suggestions. I know there is supposed to be no malware for mac, but could this be some?
    Thanks, Shannon

    Hi Shannon,
Do not worry about malware here.
This kind of message is generated when there is such a change in the software used by your computer's Mac OS X, that its library of permissions doesn't contain anymore the corresponding basis.
It is very likely that there is nothing to be repaired anymore as Permissions for the files mentioned in that log.
Anyway it is nothing to be worried about as malware or virus or such thing.

  • File permission and ownership problem

I am trying to resolve some file permission and ownership problems that are left over from using Migration Assistant to set up my iMac from an older iMac. In a terminal session when I use the ls -l command I'm getting a file/directory owner of 504. Sometimes the group is admin and sometimes the group is also 504. I think this is because the owner of the file on the old computer is not present in the new one but I want to be sure before I just change the owner and group.

The following should give you an indication->
    id -un 504
    or you could try->
dscl . list /Users UniqueID | grep 504  && echo "User exists" || echo "User does not exist"

  • 10.5.8 disk mounting problem

I updated to 10.5.8 and decided I would download the photoshop elements trial off Adobe's website. It was at 365 MB of 1.27 GB and it suddenly came up "mounting failed" I am currently trying to download it again, but my internet connection is slow so it will be awhile before I see if it happens again at 365 MB. Has anyone else had disk mounting problems in 10.5.8?

Speaking as someone who works a lot with PSE, I would say the odds are very high that this is an Adobe problem rather than a 10.5.8 problem. Wait a while and try the download again.

  • More disk permissions problems after updating to 10.5.1

After updating to 10.5.1, my hard disk shows more disk permissions problems. But for 10.5.0, there is only one permission problem which cannot be repaired.

  • Best strategy for iPhoto Disk space problems

My wife is a shutter bug. She has about 20000+ pictures and growing fast. She also has an HD camera.
So, disk space is an issue for us (500G iMac)
Current iPhoto library is big (190G) and growing fast.
What is the best solution to solve the out "iphoto library disk space problem"?
    1. Get a really good USB drive and put the iPhoto library on that?
    2. Get a NAS drive and put the iPhoto library on that?
    3. Split the libraries and remote the old ones and keep the new one local?
    4. Another option that I am not aware of?
I tried some tests on a nice NAS solution (Netgear ReeadyNAS Ultra) and iPhoto seems to run really slowly from the mounted NAS drive.
    Any recommendations appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mark

    1. Get a really good USB drive and put the iPhoto library on that?
This is the best option - be sure that the EHD is always available prior to launching iPhoto
    2. Get a NAS drive and put the iPhoto library on that?
This will not work unless you find a NAS that uses Mac OS Extended (journaled) formatting or you make a formatting or you make a disk image and place it on the NAS
    3. Split the libraries and remote the old ones and keep the new one local?
works but loses much of the power of iPhoto's search capability
    4. Another option that I am not aware of?
get a bigger hard drive in your Mac

  • Disk mount problem

I have an external fw disk that stopped mounting properly, at least when I log in under my user name (with admin privileges). The disk shows up in disk utility with the little fw disk symbol and the proper capacity and model name: 372.6 GB OWC Mercury Elite Por-AL 800/400. But the icon for the volume, External HD, appears as a piece of paper with a folded corner. It does not appear in Finder but it is detected in terminal when I run the "mount" command. This problem occurs whether I plug the disk into my iMac (using fw 400) or laptop (using fw 800).
I tried logging in as "guest" and the disk mounts properly and I can access all the folders on it. When I end session as guest and log in under my user name, the same problem as described above recurs.
When I run repair disk, no problems are found.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    TomK,
I just had your same problem yesterday with my external USB LaCie Porsche disk. I've been using FW disks for years and this never happened to me before.
I tried running the disk tests with Disk Utility, switching the drive on and off, with no result.
Disk Warrior 3.0.3 solved the problem by rebuilding the directory structure. Now it works again and no file was (visibly) lost.
By adding up what I read in this thread, I get to the conclusion that the problem was in the disk (not in the finder prefs) and is not related with USB vs. FW, as at first I guessed.
I'm curious to know if and how you solved your problem.
Could you solve it using a standard Apple utility or some terminal command ?
I can manage unix commands if needed...
    Thanks
    Piero

  • Recurring disk permission problems.

I am having recurring disk permission problems on my MacBook Air (Rev. A 1.6GHz/OS X 10.6.6).I am using Onyx to verify and repair disk permissions, but after about a week the computer seems to slow down and respond strangely. I run Onyx again, and it repairs many disk permissions, but the same thing happens again after about a week. Below is the log from a repair disk permissions that I ran through Onyx earlier today.
What can I do to fix this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Airport disk speed problem

Im getting very strange transfer speeds while downloading torrent files to my airport disk. The transferrates jumps between 1.mbit/sec to almost 0.kbits/sec, and then up again and so on. Also I find that regular transfer to the disk, for example copying a large folder is very sluggish. Is there any way to resolve the problem, or is low speed something I have to live with.
I bought the extreme mainly to get all my external drives, away from my desk, but with such low speed I'll have to bring 'em back and then the purchase seems kinda wasted.

"File transfers from machines on the network to the AirPort Disk are very slow (~0.9 MB/s) and I understand that this is a known issue (transfer times to TC are very fast)"
What type of drive are you using?
"Is there a technical issue for this slow speed or is it something that Apple will be fixing in the future?"
I have gotton different throughput using different drives and enclosures. The antec enclosure sold in the yeah, we have that office supply stores works well. It uses SATA drives, and can connect to your TC using USB.
"I have seen a number of comments re. the AirPort Disk where the issue of reliability has been raised, are there any issues e.g. corruption of data?"
in both the extreme and the TC, there is an issue of corruption due to the extreme and the TC not having a way to do disk checking. Basically what you have is the same as pulling disks with out doing an eject. no eject proceedure on the TC or the extreme. After a while you get disk errors. the only way of fixing is to run disk utility on the volume. of course, to do so you need to directly connect to a mac machine. running disk utility on a disk image, will not address disk volume problems.

  • PS CS4 Scratch Disk Ownership on this Volume Problems

I have a second hard drive selected as a scratch disk for Photoshop CS4 but PS won't start unless a check is put in the box "Ignore ownership on this volume". However that won't stay checked and I keep having to go into "Get Info" and rechecking that box. That check box is not on my main boot drive but it seems to be on every other drive. This wasn't an issue for a long time and then suddenly it started happening recently even though I haven't made any changes to my setup. Any ideas how to make that setting stick??

As long as you understand the security risk there's no other reason for avoiding that option. However, as long as you are the only one writing to these other drives, then there's no need to ignore permissions. You would always have access to your own files.

  • Disk image problem

I'm attempting to create an image of my hard drive, so when i reformat i can restore my computer to the way it was before the format. The problem is, when ever i use the disk utility to create an image, it always comes back with an error message saying resources are busy. What does that mean and how can i go about creating my image???

You are probably trying to create the image on your startup volume by copying files. You cannot create an image of the OS that way. Furthermore, an image file is not bootable so even though you may create one you will have no way of restoring the image.
The proper way to accomplish what you want is to create a clone of your startup volume on a bootable external Firewire drive. You can clone the drive as follows:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.
Before reformatting the internal hard drive be sure to test your clone to be sure it will boot the computer. Open Startup Disk preference in System Preferences. Select the icon for the system on the external drive then click on the Restart button. Once you have started up from the external drive you can format the internal drive using Disk Utility.

  • Disk Ownership Confusion

I have a large Firewire disk drive attrached to my iMac with Mountain Lion 10.8.2  I've use this drive using an Administrative user.  Needing a new directory tree to hold things, I created a folder on the drive name /FOLDER with Finder.  To do this I was required to give my admin password.  This was needed for each directory I wanted to create in the tree.
Thinking to simplify this and having a lot of UNIX experience, I tried to use Terminal to make it easier.  So having created /FOLDER/GROUP1 via Finder on this disk volumn, I opened Terminal and cd /Volumes/DISK1/FOLDER/GROUP1.  where DISK1 is the drive name.  In fact the names are not in All Caps, I just used that for illustration, I prefer not to use the actual names.  I find that even though I created GROUP1 as my log in ID which is an administrator ID, ls -ld reports it is owned by _unknown with group _unknown and the ls -l line begins:  drwxr-xr-x+.  Running as user root (employing the command sydo bash to get a root prompt - I know this is dangerous and minimize the exposure of my system to this), I am able to use chmod to change the permissions to drwxrwxrwc+.  So if I make a subdirectory writable by everyone, I can as anyone create another subdirectory under the first one.
Normally, if the ls report begins drwx, the owner of entry can change it.  However, I cannot even as root change the ownership of the entry from _unknown or the group membership from _unknown to the user or group I want.  It ignores the attempt with the chown command in Bash even when running as root.  It gives no error and the result code (echo $?) is zero which is supposed to mean no error.
I really don't want to grant write permission to everyone (although I am the only user), but I want writeability to my own user id to make maintenance easy and avoid sudo as much as possible.
In the past I have fooled around with this a lot and by accident created the situation I wanted but I can recall what did it.  I've check many things about this on google and no one is asking the question I am (how to make the directory tree writeable by my login ID as the owner of the directory tree)?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Bruce

The sequence of events made me wonder what was going on.  I did not mark the topic as solved yet it was marked as solved on your response.
I put the topic on the Admin topic and received information that there appears to be a bug in the forum software that is causing this type of behavior.
I'm not worried about the points themselves but I worry about marking a solution as a solution when it is not one and thus will lead others to go the wrong way when they have the same issue.
The external drive did not have any system on it.  At least any that a Mac boot process recognized.  It came as a blank disk from Other World Computing (MacSales.com).  It is not listed as a bootable system.
After a number of years doing UNIX support at a major bank is the US, I do know alot about the way those systems are supposed to run.  However, the issue of marking a drive "ignore ownership on this volume" which is the default setting when I added the drive still puzzles me.  In the UNIX world I'm not familiar with this option or concept.  It appears that by turning it off, my problems were solved and my drive works exactly like a Unix compatible drive.  However, I have other drives with that option set and they do not cause problems.
The directory /Users/username has NOTHING to do with ownership.  It is a UNIX convention also used by Mac OS X or darwin opsys (Apples flavor of Unix).  The environment various HOME is set to that directory when a user logs in.  The single character ~ is also replaced by the home directory when it is the first directory item on the file path.  Some applications have a default directory name used when opening a file.  It is often /Users/userid/Documents.  Since iCloud's introduction, the standard default save location is iCloud which is not part of the Disk file system but the cloud based file system.  You can using the open or save dialogs move to any directory to which you have access.
However, I need to learn about the option "ignore ownership on this volume".

  • New Mac with major permission and disk-write problems

Right, so I'm pretty new to Mac, after getting my first Mac computer (a 17-inch MacBook Pro) at the end of January this year. It's been great so far and I love the thing, but I've suddenly encountered some crazy problems which I'm pulling my hair out over because I have tried everything to fix them, and have had no luck.
I'll try to include as many details as possible, and I'm prepared to bear with anyone who asks me about something I've alrady tried, just so I can get this sorted.
Okay, so first of all, the main problem seems to be with permissions, mostly with disk-write permissions. Any apps that I want to install that required keychain access will no longer install. I enter my keychain password, hit Return, and the dialog box closes without continuing. So I hit "Install" again and it becomes a never-ending cycle of entering my password to no avail. Now, this happens with ANY application that requires keychain access to install. It is not limited to any particular application. I know my password is right because the box closes, and if I enter it wrong, the dialog box shakes because it is incorrect.
Furthermore, it seems keychain access is problematic in other apps. If I want to authenticate something, it will do the same thing as I mentioned before, meaning I get nowhere with the application.
From here, it gets worse. If I download something (anything), then restart my computer, it is still there. As it should be. However, if I delete an APPLICATION (not just any file) OR change preferences for some programs (one in particular that I specifically don't want starting up on.... startup), including through System Preferences>Users & Groups>Login Items, they will not save. This is driving me insane. For instance, I downloaded some free apps from the Mac App Store to try out, but decided I didn't want them. I tried to deleted them from the app folder and succeeded. Emptied trash. Gone. Restart, and.... they're back? So I tried to uninstall them via the Mac App Store, once I found you could do that. Again, it didn't work. Any Login Items preference changes don't stay after a restart.
Originally, none of this was a problem and everything was working fine. The first sign that something was wrong would be Apple Mail often asking for passwords, usually for my Hotmail accounts, saying that they were rejected by the server (but are correct passwords, I get the emails from the accounts, and the passwords are always accepted once I type them in, only to be asked for them some time later on for no apparent reason). At the time, I tried to repair the keychain, tried deleting and recreating the mail account entries and what not, but nothing helped. It still happens, but at the time, it was more of a niggly thing than an outright problem.
I should also mention that I did use BootCamp to install Windows 8 on a small partition, but after I couldn't boot back into Mac (I didn't realise you had to use the Option key whilst booting), I found out that you had to hold the Option key to get back into Mac, then used BootCamp to get rid of Windows. Everything was fine so far. Until I decided to reinstall Windows 8 with BootCamp. This is where things started going wrong. I decided to install a bootloader to make it easier for me to boot between the two systems. I was tossing up between rEFIt and Chameleon, and decided that rEFIt would be the best for my needs. So I downloaded and installed it, which seemed to go fine. Until I restarted. Mac would endlessly load (the spinning grey dots with the Apple logo).
Now, I actually managed to fix this, but I should probably go into more detail. First of all, holding the option key and selecting my Mac partition would allow me back into Mac, and same with Windows 8. At this point, I decided to uninstall Windows 8 to try fix my problems, except now BootCamp was giving me errors. I believe it was something about being unable to unmount the disc, but it may have been a different error. I don't entirely remember. So then I decided to try getting rid of rEFIt. I followed the instructions on the official site but it didn't work. So then I tried deleting the files with root (sudo) access through terminal. Which also failed....
So to the Recovery partition. Booting into Disk Utilities, I repaired permissions, which worked fine, and repaired the disk. I believe I had run the disk repair a few times before to try to fix BootCamp when it stopped working. Anywaym it had worked before, but this time, it said that it was corrupted and could not be repaired. Something about needing to reinstall Mac OS X. With all my files on this computer and currently nothing to back it up with (eventually I will have something to do backups with, but it'll have to wait a few months), I'm not going to do that.
Finally, I managed to delete the rEFIt files through Terminal within the Recovery partition. I ran permission repair and disk repair again to clean anything up. Disk repair gave me the same error, but now I could get back into Mac without holding the option key on every **** boot.
Now more problems had presented themselves. I decided that the lock under Login Items was probably preventing me form successfully changing my startup items. Trying to unlock it did the same thing as I previously mentioned. Type in my password, keychain accepts it, then nothing happens. The keychain settings were already defaulted so that keychain would stay unlocked after authenticated, and all stuff like that. Using "Get Info" on anything has permissions locked and again, I cannot unlock to change them, although looking at a PDF file just now, whilst still locked, it would allow me to add or remove users, so maybe that's not completely accurate. I believe I tended to look at the system folders though, and my name wasn't under ownership, although I don't believe it was meant to be, but I was hoping that maybe that would fix the problem. I guess not.
At this time, I still had my Windows 8 partition sitting around and couldn't get rid of it. I heard of the manual way to do it through Disk Utility. I tried this in Mac OS X, and through the Recovery partition, but neither worked. An error about being unable to unmount the drive. I finally found a way to remove it. Honestly, I don't completely remember how I did it, but I believe it was through a command line, uh.... command. Now I had free space that I couldn't use to expand my Macintosh HD partition back to full size, again with the unable to unmount error. Finally, I fixed this by booting from a Mac OS X installation disc that I happened to have, and using Disk Utility off of that. After that, Disk Utility no longer gave me errors for disk repair.
However, my other problems all still remained. I had written a little list of things I found on the internet for fixing my problems. One solution was to use "resetpassword" through terminal under the Recovery partition, then select Macintosh HD and select "Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs". That didn't work until I tried it through the Disk Utility on the Mac OS X installation disc. That worked, and once I was back into Mac, Spotlight started indexing again. However, nothing else had happened.
I should also mention that keychain access isn't completely non-existent for me. Setting up a new WiFi connection worked for me (that is, connecting to a new network), but now every time I connect to the network, I have to authenticate it. However, it does accept my keychain password and eventually connect.
Now, another thing on my list to try was single-user mode, and using "/sbin/fsck -fy" until everything was okay. Well, the first time, it found a bunch of errors, then fixed itself up. Then it was all okay. But nothing had changed. So trying again, I this time used ?/sbin/mount -uw /" which I believe is meant to allow writing access to the drive. Now when running "/sbin/fsck -fy", I had an error. Specifically, "Journal need to be replayed but volume is read-only".
So that's pretty much where I am up to at the moment. It seems to be a poblem with write permissions, possibly among other things. If it was Windows, I might be able to work it out easier, but being new to Mac, I'm still finding my way around. I guess this is a good learning experience, but it's not fun to have to deal with it so early on.
If anyone can help me, I'd greatly appreciate it. I have tried many things, so if you suggest something that I have tried and possibly forgot to mention, I'll let you know, but any help is still helpful, even if only eliminating possible problems/causes/solutions.

Actually you first post is so long that most people just glance at it and move on. To say the least you are very verbose.
Your problem stems from something going wrong with permissions, as you know. How and why that happen is usually a user error of some type.
You can try to repair permissions and see if that corrects it. If not I will leave other options to someone that may know more about the permission system on a Mac.
