Ignoring an Internal Drive

Ahoy-
I've had my eMac for a good long time now, and with the passage of time, my eMac's internal Hard Drive has finally bitten the dust. Now, normally this wouldn't be a problem, as you see, I'm booted from an External LaCie 250 Gig hard drive, and I haven't used my Internal Drive in a good long time. As I mentioned, normally this wouldn't be a problem, but, a different problem has now cropped up. In a long, loop-around way, a Blizzard techie told me I might have a problem with my Video Card, or Video RAM. So, I ran the Apple Hardware Test from the CD that came with my eMac, and no matter what I do, it always finds an error with Mass Storage, and refuses to continue to my Graphics card.
So, I beseech you today, o wise eMac Discussion residents- Is there a Terminal Command or ANY other way I can have my eMac COMPLETELY and utterly ignore my Internal Drive? Or even better, a Terminal command or something that causes my eMac to think my external drive is an internal drive?
You see, I think the problem with my internal drive is something to do with Seeking-- I've ran TechTool Pro in regards to this, and it finishes all its test on the internal drive, but gets stuck on the "Seek" test.
So, with all that being said, is there any way I can convince my computer that its internal drive doesn't exist?
Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of my internal drive Seek error (as denoted by TechTool), the Apple Hardware Test refuses to skip the Mass Storage portion of the test, and gives me an error that looked like "2STF 4/3 ATA - 100 a + a -6 - Master".
I also know that only Repair Techs and Apple employees have a list of those error messages.
Furthermore, if I try to Option-start up without my External drive connected, upon reaching the startup selection page, it freezes and I've got to hold the power button for 7 odd seconds to turn it off. If, I Option-startup my computer WITH the external drive connected, I can get to the startup disk page. I disconnect my drive, Refresh the Icon List, and then start up via Apple Hardware Test.
I then try to run the extended test, and just like before, it gets hung up on my Internal Drive error. Curses, foiled again.
I've also tried Un-mounting the Internal drive via Disk utility, and while it stays Un-mounted, the Hardware Test still refuses to skip Mass Storage.
Are there any other programs that could give a more detailed description of my internal drives problem, and one that can test everything related to and including my Graphics card and video RAM?
Must I actually give up my computer to a repair technician? God forbid.

  • ITunes keeps storing files on C drive, even when the library/storage is on another internal drive. It should stop that.

Whatever I do to get iTunes to store it's data and settings on another internal drive, it KEEPS some sort of data/settings stored on the C drive.
A mkdir has been set up already to catch nasty "keep doing that" behaviour. Nevertheless, iTunes dumps stuff on the C drive /documents/mymusic.
Without to receive a technical story (read: a SIMPLE solution that does not feel like a hack), what's the solution.
Why does iTunes not simply ask WHERE to store the files rather than "assuming that the user is stupid and we think for him" attitude.
managing a database or DRM isn't THAT difficult.
Whatever files are within the directory is absolutely fine, as long as the user is allowed to choose that directory.

Did you mean mkdir or mklnk?
By default the iTunes library is stored at C:\Users\<User>\Music. If you play with Windows so that your entire profile is stored on a different drive then the library will be stored inside the profile. If you have used the option to change the location of the media folder to point to another path then you've only changed where the content is stored, not the database and supporting files. In addition if you use this option with an external drive or network share and that location isn't ready when iTunes starts then it will reset the path to the media folder to the default location inside the library folder.
Generally the solution when setting out is to move the entire library to the root of a different drive and then shift-start-iTunes to connect to the library in this new location. See HT1589: iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
Since you didn't do that to start with, either start again, or see my post make a split library portable.
There is another chunk of data stored in the %appdata% section of your user profile. If you don't have any iOS devices you can ignore this, but if you have, and have an SSD system drive, then there is merit in relocating the ...\MobileSync\Backup folder to another drive with a mklnk junction/symbolic link as these backup folders can become quite large. Note that junctions/links should not be used to relocate sections of the main library as they will be unraveled if iTunes ever tries to write to the path.

  • Disk Utility says everything's fine, but Install disk doesn't find my internal drive as a possible destination. When I startup with Command   S, I get a looping "cannot mount errno = 19" message.

Disk Utility says everything's fine, but Install disk doesn't find my internal drive as a possible destination. When I startup with Command + S, I get a looping "cannot mount errno = 19" message.
Problem started when I used Tech Tool Pro 6 to "de-fragment volume". Had to cancel that process before it finished because I ran out of time. Thereafter, when I startup my machine normally, I get the gray Apple logo at first, but it changes to a prohibited symbol (circle with a slash thru it) and hangs.
When I startup holding the Option key, I can see my internal drive, but I get the same results as above.
When I startup using the MacBook OSX Install DVD, it does not find my internal drive as possible destination.
When I startup using the MacBook OSX Install DVD and then run Disk Utility, it finds my drive, allows me to "repair" and says everything is fine.
When I startup with Command + S, I get a looping error message "errno = 19" and cannot stop it to do anything else.
When I startup from Disk Warrior v4.4, it does not find my internal drive to do any repairs.
When I startup from Tech Tool Pro 6 and run the "computer check" diagnostics, everything passes but the Volume Structure, which fails at "Volume Extents (B-tree)." When I use TTP's "Tools" option to run "volume repair" it will show my internal drive and allow me to click the GO button, but nothing happens and nothing changes.
I have a Time Machine backup on an external USB drive, but for as long as the internal drive doesn't mount, I can't use the backup to restore.

It's a false report and should be ignored.
I would not rely on TT as I've already said earlier even before Grant posted similar advice.
I really think the Rigid Disk Block may be corrupted. This holds the partition map and could prevent a volume from being unmounted. Unfortunately, there is no way to fix that without repartitioning the drive which will remove everything. So, before going down this road I hope you have backups or can make a backup.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.
    5. Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Why does Mac force boot to the recovery partition even when an external recovery option is selected? This disables the option of reformatting the internal drive because it is in use running the recovery partition.I have yet to find a viable solution.

To make a very tedious story short, My Mac decided that it would crash and not reboot the OS. I decided to bite the bullet and just reformat, sacrificing my very important data. I have tried just about every trick in the book. There is one one major problem I am facing. When I try to reformat the internal HDD using Disk Utility. It fails to unmount. "Make sure that all applications and files are closed on this disk.", Suggesting that the computer is ignoring my command at startup to boot from my external recovery drive, and  using the Recovery partition on the problem drive, making it impossible to reformat the drive.  When the internal drive is removed and connected by another method it is not recognized.
I failed to read the fine print on the box that  suggested I purchase another Mac to fix problems with my primary Mac because any utility with the potential to fix the problem can only be run on a functioning Mac.

Booting to any version of the Recovery system, the built in partition on the internal drive, a recovery partition on an external drive or from the Online internet system will not stop you from formatting the Macintosh HD partition on the internal drive. So your problem is not that you are booting from the internal Recovery HD partition. It is probably your internal hard drive has problems, failing.
You could try booting the system from the Online system. At startup hold down the Option/Alt + Command + r keys and keep them held down until you see a globe on the screen. That will boot the system from across the internet from the Apple servers completely removing the internal drive as a boot source. If you still can't erase and format or repartition and format the internal drive then your drive has problems and will need to be replaced.

  • How to keep an internal drive from being mounted on startup?

Other than opening the box and disconnecting them physically, how do I keep an internal drive from being mounted at startup? I have two problems:
    1) despite having an SSD drive marked as the startup drive, I think one of my other drives is being considered first - startup takes a long time and it shows the gray circle with a line through it, before acquiescing into booting (rapidly and nicely) from the SSD drive. How do I make it ignore the other drives and go right for this?
    2) when the system boots up, if I don't immediately dismount the internal drives (which I don't need most of the time), Time Machine and Spotlight begin going over them.
other than physically removing them, anything I can do in some OS X boot script to keep those drives from being mounted?

Ok, I followed your directions (including de-seleccting and re-selecting the SSD as boot disk from System Preferences). Console: there was nothing under System Diagnostic Reports, but here's what the All Messages logs said after the Boot_Time that demonstrated my issue (3 min wait, then gray circle with a line through it, then finally rapid boot off the SSD). Is there anything here that shows what the heck it's doing before it actually boots off the SSD?

  • Secondary internal drive has padlock badge?

I've never seen this before. My secondary (non-startup) internal drive has a padlock on it and I can't open it.
Ran Disk Utility. Said everything is fine. Permissions are weird. They are all "custom", but "Ignore Permissions" is checked, so it shouldn't matter.

  • Mirror T61p Internal Drive to UltraBay HDD?

So, my system is awaiting an upgrade - I made the mistake of a 5400RPM drive instead of the 7200RPM. Well, now I have the 7200RPM drive and my UltraBay adapter for it. The problem is that I am trying to avoid a reinstall of the OS, since for me, this is a minimum 2-3 day process where I can't get any work done. Is there any reliable, easy way to simply mirror my entire internal drive to the UltraBay drive? They're the same capacity - both 160GB Hitachi models - but my attempts thus far, including Clonezilla off a USB drive, have failed to get the System Recovery Partition right.
    Thanks!
    T61p - 6460-7EU + UltraBays galore.
I'd rather be on a pSeries, but they're a bit heavy to carry around.

I always use Acronis, hasn't failed me yet.

  • Locked out of additional internal drives... Help please

Any help would be more then welcomed as I did something stupid and need a bit of help to fix it please.
Had an issue today on my Mac Pro (2.8, Quad 5.1). All was running fine until I went to update a piece of 3rd party software (Fetch). After the download I went to drag new version into my apps folder and was told I didn't have permission to instal the app.
Now to be clear, I've had a bit of an issue with this before as I'm running 2 mac pros in different locations and drag and copy files and folders from here to there on a regular basis via FTP and external drives. I also have all 4 slots filled on both systems with various drives set up for a particular function along with a number of externals. I've set permissions on both systems and all drives to "read and write" for both my accounts to have full access and each time "apply to enclosed items" was selected.
But for some reason, from time to time, I have to authorise the file transfer. Haven't figured out the reason but it's not a huge deal so have left it.
Today was the first time I have had access denied for my home folder when working from same system. Not thinking and while on the phone to someone (this is where I did the stupid part), I opened the info on my boot (startup) drive and decided to add both of my user accounts and change permissions for each in addition to the system, admin and everyone that was already there. This was done while working from it directly and then set options to "apply to enclosed items". Yea, smart I know.
About 20 minutes passed and then it told me that it didn't like any of my system extensions. I was forced to do a restart and got the spinning wheel for about 30 minutes. Had to do a force quit and open in single user. Applejack wouldn't help at all, nothing. Had to then open cd drive through terminal just to get systems disk inside.
Restarted from systems disk and tried a simple disk utility repair. System restarted fine but I noticed that I was then locked out of all of my additional internal drives, iDisk included (padlock shown on all drive icons excluding my Boot/Startup drive). Tried opening info on the various drives with apple i option and "permissions denied" popped up each time.
I then took the step to restore from time machine. Set my restore selection to about 2 hours before I became an idiot. After it was finished I restarted the system hoping that would clear up my mistake but same thing, still locked out of all of my drives aside from boot/startup drive.
All user accounts that I have added to the boot drive are still showing, I have yet to try and remove them... Figured I would ask for help before I messed it up any further. Spoke to apple care and they have advised me to do what I have done so far.
Aside from an erase and instal, what steps should I take from this point? Will removing the added accounts clear up the issue?
Also, any idea as to why I was refused permissions to begin with...?
Thanks in advance and sorry for the book, just wanted to be as clear as possible.

Force iPad into Recovery Mode. Follow step 1 to step 3 very closely.

  • I had tried installing windows 8.1 pro with many different solutions like using Bootcamp or using gdisk part and upgrading the disk part from hybrid to EFI also tried Using Lenevo external Optical drive which doesnt worked my internal drive is damage

I Am fed up after getting error after errors on the installation of windows 8.1 in my late 2011 MBP 15" 750 GB HDD and OSX Yosemite 10.10.2 and i am trying to install windows 8 or 7 and the error doent go away also i tried various other methods like gdisk part to make next button appear and Afte next button appear i am getting the error after the check list is done
please someone help me out i am getting paranoid in this and i am going to be a threat to society because its making me insane.

    1. You cannot use the Lenovo external drive, because you already have a built-in SuperDrive. Get your internal drive fixed.
    2. Your Mac does not support EFI Boot, because it is a PreUEFI model based on How to identify MacBook Pro models - Apple Support and the following list. If you force it with EFI boot, some of your hardware GPU/Audio will not work properly.

  • Backing up images on external hard drive and restoring to new internal driv

I recently purchased a new external hard drive and a new internal hard drive. Before installing the new internal drive, I backed up the old internal drive on the external drive. Then I installed the new internal drive to my Macbook Pro. However, when I tried to access and print my Aperture images on the new internal drive, I received an error message saying "versions with unavailable master images cannot be printed." I clicked on 'show referenced files," but couldn't determine how to recover my master images. I checked the forum and under "referenced files go offline after restore from a backup" it said to go to "File>manage referenced files" but nothing else. How can I recover my master images? Please help - I have nearly 6000 images that are lost without recovering the master images. And no, I was ultra stupid in not placing everything in a vault = but I'm relatively new to Mac OS and thought a backup would be sufficient. Thank!

The volume name of the new hard drive needs to be the same as the old hard drive - rename it if you have to - then they should be fine.
If you cannot seem to make this work then you will have to reconnect them with locate referenced files under the file menu. Select all the files that are disconnected before going into the dialog.

  • Mac Pro 2.66 internal drives in a Mac Pro 64bit i7?

Is it possible to just unmount my internal drives from my workhorse Mac Pro 2.66 Dual Core Intel Xeon tower and mount in my new 8C Xeon 2X2.4g 64bit tower?
    Thanks in advance!

It's not clear if your workhorse is an original, or at least early Mac Pro and you new Mac Pro is the 2010 version, but if so, be aware that the drive sleds the internal drives are in are not the same. I don't know what would happen if you tried that swap but I doubt it'd be good for the new Mac Pro.
The drive itself could be transferred from the old sled to the new sled and it would fit but, if the new Mac Pro is, indeed, a 2010, it won't boot because 10.6.4 is the minimum OS needed. You could, however, use it for Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant purposes.

  • I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on external drive.  I'd like to migrate only the internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive then just plug in iPhoto library drive.  Is this going be a problem?

I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on an external drive.  Both drives are backed up on Time Machine.  I'd like to migrate only the old internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive and then just plug in iPhoto library drive to the new iMac.  This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data.  Will this work using Set Up Assistant?

Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one.  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD.  Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select.   Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows.  Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items.  That may take a few mintutes on a large library.

  • Can I use an internal drive or external only?

It seems you need a very large (1TB) drive dedicated to Time Machine.
As internal storage is always cheaper, would an internal non-boot drive in the additional PCI slot work for Time Machine, specifically will it see an internal drive or only external firewire drives?
And as I've read in other posts it's not recommended to partition the drive?
    Any other formatting suggestions?
    Thanks!

You have four drive bays in the computer. For best speed for backup you should install the backup drive in one of your four bays if possible. If that isn't possible then you have the option to use an external FireWire drive. You also have two additional internal SATA connectors. However, you only have one extra bay, the one for the second optical drive. You can install a drive in the spare optical drive bay and connect it to the same ribbon as the optical drive unless you have one of the models that uses all SATA drives, even the optical drive.
The general requirements for a TM drive are that it be partitioned using GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled. A TM drive should be at least twice the capacity of the drive or drives it will back up. Over time a TM backup drive will fill up at which time it is either replaced or erased.

  • Time Machine won't back up to internal Drive through AFP?

    Hi All!
    Heres my Problem.
I have a Mac Pro system with 4 Hard Drives installed inside the internal Bays.  I wish to use one for Time Machine for the Clients.
On the clients i get the error about it not having the correct AFP version. (I know this is a common problem within Lion).
Although surely if the hard drive is inside a Mac Pro Server running Lion then the client should be able to back up through it to its INTERNAL drive.
Or does this still count as NAS?
    Thoughts?
    Dan

We are going to need more information from you in order to help.
What kind of hard drive is this?
    How is it formatted?
Where is it connected?   Directly to your Mac?
How is it connected?  USB?  Firewire?
What have you tried so far?
What error messages have you received?

  • I'm seeing the "No" sign on Startup, and my internal drive doesn't show up.

Good day to you all. It's my first post here and I come to you in desperation.
Last night, i was browsing the internet and syncing my iPhone. Suddenly my iMac froze and there's no way to restart it but to press the back button. Upon restarting, it showed me the Apple logo then a few minutes more it showed me a "No" sign (ie. No Parking circle.) Noticing that this is a serious one, I pulled out my Snow Leopard installation disc and restarted the system. Last night, I managed to see the internal disk listed in Disk Utility, but it's in red. The partitions (Mac OS X and Windows XP via Boot Camp) can be seen but cannot be accessed. Desperate and tired, I slept the night off.
This morning, I tried my luck again. Fired up the iMac with SL inserted, opened up DU, and my internal drive is not in red anymore. I managed to open my Mac but I really noticed the sluggish performance. A couple of hangs later, I had to restart again using the button at the back, and there it was again: No sign. But now it's even worse. I can no longer see my internal drive in DU. Tried almost everything: resetting the PRAM (holding the X button) and pressing the C with SL disc inserted just doesn't cut it. The odd thing though, is when I press the Option key upon startup, I can see all the partitions (Mac OS X, Windows XP, Snow Leopard disc.) But upon clicking Mac OS X always ended up with the "No" sign.
I'm really desperate since I although I'm using Time Machine, I know I exempted some folders in there. Can you suggest some more instructions to make my internal drive show up? Is there a Terminal command of such kind for it? I hope my drive is still okay since I can still see all of the partitions via Option.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you so much in advance!

    kaloyster,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
From what you are describing it looks like your HD has either fully failed or is failing. I would suggest taking it in for service. The good news is you have been using Time Machine so you have a backup of most of your system. As you may know TM does not backup any MS Windows data.
If your machine is still covered by warranty or AppleCare this should be pretty painless. If you are not covered by either then just contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider and bring it in. The contact information in your country is:
