Ignoring ipod firmware partition?

This has been driving me nuts for awhile. I've done alot of googling, and still can't seem to find anything that works.
In Thunar, it shows my ipod's firmware partition as "Apple iPod Music Player", but when I click on it I get the following error:
Given device "/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_part1_size_41094144" is not a volume or drive.
I've tried to set a hal rule to ignore it, but it seems to have no effect.
/etc/hal/fdi/policy/90-user-policy.fdi
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
<device>
<match key="block.device" string="/dev/sdf1">
<merge key="volume.ignore" type="bool">true</merge>
</match>
</device>
</deviceinfo>
According to lshal, the rule is set
volume.ignore = true (bool)
but Thunar is ignoring it? Or should I be setting something different all together to get it to ignore it? :S

You're not...
I'm using an Ipod (Nano 2Gb, grey or silver as you like... do not really know its "generation" but I guess it's one of the last as I bought it some months ago...)
However I have no problems using it... When I plug it and open Thunar, it shows 2 devices :
- Apple iPod Music Player
- IPOD (FRED) (just below the latter)
And by clicking on IPOD (FRED) it mounts it and I can use gtkpod without any problems...
Truly it's strange that it shows 2 devices, though as long as it works...
I cannot truly help you as I did not do anything particular to make it work (except adding me to the storage group for hal)...
Though I'll try to see if there is something particular somewhere that makes it work...
Hope you'll manage to get it to work...
Good luck !
EDIT :
Here is a screenshot that shows my thunar when my Ipod is plugged into the laptop.

  • [Triaged] System tries to mount iPod firmware partition

    Hi. I switched from hal-easy back to hal today, and it's started doing something weird.
    It's trying to mount my iPod's firmware partition now. It's the first partition, and doesn't have a file system on it. So before mounting the iPod's real partition, I get an error dialog about how it failed to mount that first partition, and then proceeds to mount the second one. Icons for both partitions are visible on the desktop, and in thunar. I'm using xfce 4.6, and exo-mountopt from AUR.
    It didn't behave this way before switching to hal-easy, and while I was using hal-easy. What could be going on here? How can I fix it?

    I found a way to work around this problem.
    Create /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules, or if you already have it, add this:
    # Ignore iPod's first partition
    SUBSYSTEMS=="usb" ATTRS{product}=="Rockbox media player" KERNEL=="sd?1" OPTIONS+="ignore_device last_rule"
    SUBSYSTEMS=="usb" ATTRS{product}=="iPod" KERNEL=="sd?1" OPTIONS+="ignore_device last_rule"
    This covers iPods with both Apple OS and Rockbox. After making it, the icon for the system partition will still be on the desktop. Just log out and log back in and it will disappear.
    And if you get nitpicky about the volume label being all-caps like I do, you can make /etc/hal/fdi/policy/05-labels.fdi and then restart hal:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
    <deviceinfo version="0.2">
    <device>
    <match key="volume.label" string="TIZPOD">
    <merge key="volume.label" type="string">TiZPod</merge>
    </match>
    </device>
    </deviceinfo>
    Unfortunately, these are all only work-arounds for behavior that was not exhibited before... as for when it changed, I can't remember for the life of me. I'd rather not have to use work-arounds, but they're working. I've marked the thread as "triaged" instead of "solved" because the problem's not fixed, just worked around.
    Now I'd like to figure out how to get my iPod icon back instead of the boring hard drive icon when I use Rockbox USB, but I'm sure I can just google around for that.

  • Updating iPod firmware to version 1.03 - internet connection issue

    Hi,
    I was trying to update my iPod firmware, but it couldnt download the firmware package, trying to convince me I was not connected to the internet.
    How can man adjust connection settings for the iTunes, to be able to connect and download the update finally?
    I must add that I'm 100% connected to the internet.
    Another question is - what i get once i update to version 1.03. The thing i'm looking for the most is the ability of skipping albums, not just songs.
    Thanks
    Ivan

    1.0.3 will not provide the ability to skip albums... shuffles don't have that capability.
    Sorry...

  • Help: Ipod Stuck  on Restoring iPod Firmware

    I left my iPod touch (1G) on overnight to let it update,some error popped up and said I have to restore my iPod, so I did. I left it on to restore and has it is taken 2 hours so far and is stuck on the Restoring iPod Firmware. Is there a solution to this. Also my iPod is already in recovery mode.

    Also it was not and never has been jailbroken if that helps.

  • Latest iPod firmware version

    Hello,
    I don't have easy access to iTunes, so I ask this to you all.
    As of today, what is the latest version for iPod firmware?
    (I have a 5.5 Generation iPod video, if that makes a difference)

    Mine says Software Version 1.3. It's a 30GB 5th gen iPod. I bought it as a refurb toward the end of the model run, so it should be a "5.5" model.
    (I have a 5.5 Generation iPod video, if that makes a difference)
    It does make a difference. Every iPod model has different internal software.

  • What is the current version of the iPod firmware?

    Hello,
    I'm currently running the "other OS" and can't get iTunes.
    Could someone please tell me what the current version of the iPod firmware is? This way, I'll know whether I need to go to a Mac or PC computer to update the firmware of my 5th gen iPod. Thank you very much.

    This question is now answered. I wonder if there's a webpage that will post the most current version number when the firmware changes. I guess I could keep asking every now and then. Or one of the Apple iTunes users can update all of us when iTunes lets him know that version has changed.

  • IPod firmware 1.2.1

    Hello all,
    I was curious how recent the iPod firmware version 1.2.1 is and if anyone has had any of the previously known issues after upgrading to this version. Issues being the "blue denim" screen, iPod locking up, songs skipping, etc.
    I tried upgrading my iPod to 1.2 a while back and had to restore it back to 1.0 again to get it working properly so I'm extremely hesitant to upgrade again.
    Thanks!
      Windows XP Pro   AMD Athlon 3000+, 1GB RAM, 30GB iPod 5G black

    Hm, this is the firmware I have on my 80GB video iPod and mine will freeze up overnight. If I leave the iPod disconnected from any USB2.0 cord and leave the hold switch ON, for say, 10-12 hours (as in overnight) my iPod will be frozen in the morning guaranteed. It's more of an annoyance than anything because it can be reset using menu & select and all is fine and dandy. Now, if I leave it disconnected from a USB2.0 cord but do not leave it on hold then it will not be frozen when I check in the morning. Odd.
    My theory is the latest firmware v. 1.2.1 is causing the problem.
    Custom Windows XP Pro

  • Is the new ipod firmware update the cause of them freezing?

    the frimware update for the ipod turned my 2 day old video into a paper weight. yesterday when i plugged my ipod in, itunes asked me to download the newest itunes, so i did. then, immediately, after downloading itunes urges me to udate the ipod firmware. i hadnt gotten used to the o.s that was already on my new ipod so i postponed the update. i uploaded 200 songs, 5 music videos, and superman, worked beautifully. today i plugged it in to my pc and itunes urged me to update the firmware again, so i did. everything went smooth, i unplugged it and saw no indicator saying to plug it in to my wall charger, so i didnt, an hour later i plugged Giada (my ipod) back in to upload some ebooks, the "do not disconnect" screen frozeimmidiately my pc would not recognize it neither would itunes, ive been at it for hours and nothing has changed. ive tried Giada in three other computers its the same with all of them. it works otherwise, listening to music, but while plugged into my pc its a peice of metal.
    does anybody know whats up, and how to fix it?

    So, Godmorning from Sweden
    After hours of scanning diffrent forums i found a method which worked for me, you can put the G5 Video in "Disk Mode" by first
    1. Reboot (Key lock, Key unlock, Menu+Middle several seconds, 6-10sec)
    2. Press Middle+Play just when the reboot starts.
    This enables Diskmode, to exit diskmode just do a standard reboot.
    When my Ipod enterd "disk mode" i could access it with iTunes and did a factory reset, and "for the moment" my problem is solved.
    I hope this tip helps people....

  • During restore iPod stuck on RESTORING IPOD FIRMWARE

    As stated by me above, during restore iPod got stuck on RESTORING IPOD FIRMWARE. Last time tried different computer, it did work. Next, with different firmware file (when the-other-computer-trick stopped working) like 2.0.2 and then upgrading it - worked for a time. Now, I cannot find ANY way to restore it. Just by itself it accidentally and randomly enters the so called DFU mode and this time I just cannot restore it, every time it's stuck on RESTORING IPOD FIRMWARE

    try have it restored in an apple store mate..
    if that still doesnt work, send it back and have it replaced..

  • How to reset iPod firmware

    Can I reset my iPod firmware if I try restoring it I will still have 5.0.1

    If you have done a backup since 5.0.1, then yes you will still have iOS 5.0.1.

  • Ipod firmware help!!!!

    ok, i got an ikey for chrimbo and have found out it doesnt work with the latest ipod firmware. So I downloaded some older updates and managed to get my ipod to verson 1 and verson 1.1.2 and neither work with my ikey.
    I tried my girlfriends ipod which is pc formatted and has verson 1.2.1 on there which works fine. I have tried to find this verson (1.2.1) but cant seem to anywhere. she has the same ipod as me. Does anyone know where I can get this ipod software verson from?

    Does your g/f have this software version on her computer?
    Look in "Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates." If it's there remove all others that may be present except that one.
    Then prevent iTunes from checking the internet for a new update (preferences/general and remove the check mark from "check for updates automatically). Or simply disconnect the modem from the computer.
    Then restore the iPod and it should load version 1.2.1.
    The reason I suggest this is because a Windows formatted iPod can be used on a Mac just fine, and you may be more successful getting that version of the software on it from her computer than you will in finding a standalone version of it.

  • Problem updating iPod firmware 1.2: can't find firmware

    Hi everybody!
    I just downloaded the latest version of iTune (7) and tried to update my iPod video, but, after connecting my iPod to the PC, when iTune ask me if I want to (more or less) "update your iPod firmware to 1.2" and I press "yes" a error message pops up saying: (more or less) "updating error: cannot find the firmware".
    What does it mean?? I think it should download the firmware first...hmmm
    any help will be appreciated!

    I'm having the exact same problem and tried following the advice from apple for if the firmware file was corrupt (running chkdsk and then delete the firmware files so the next time iTunes starts it will supposedly download them so you can update) but none of this worked and i still get the same error message. And i can't find a help article for if iTunes can't find the firmware files.
    Help us people! I hate how apple gives us iTunes 7 with no freakin' support!!!

  • "Grouping" menu option in iPod firmware?

    I don't know if any iTunes developers are active on these forums (should that be "fora", as in "criterium/criteria"?), but if they are, the addition of "Grouping" as an additional option under "Music" in the iPod firmware would be very useful too, as having it only in iTunes but not in the iPod rather limits its effectiveness.
    Many thanks,
    Martin Reed

    Martin
    you can send feedback directly to Apple at the following (for iPod);
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html
    and here for iTunes:

    they are open to any/all ideas

  • Accidentally deleted Firmware partition.

    Am I screwed? Is there some way I can do what apple would do when I send it in, or is this one of those things apple has to repair?

    No no, nothing like that. I'm talking about the actual partion on the ipod itself. THe partition that holds the firmware of the ipod. I accidentally deleted it. So now when I try to use the updater the updater cannot find the ipod. The only functions that stiff work are the self diagnostic tools, and the ability to load it up under the disk option.
    Outside of this it just keeps saying restore your ipod with iTunes. THis however is not possible as iTunes and the iPod updater do not recognize the iPod when it is connected. The iPod can be seen as drive however.
    Any help. I probably just going to take it back to best buy tomorrow and see what they say, hopefully They'll just give me a new one.

  • What is the latest version of ipod firmware?

    In 2009 it was version 1.3 (it's the only entry I found and it happens to be my version as well) Now being Dec 2013 I was wondering if there are any updates for such an old ipod video. Obviously if Itunes were installed it would tell me but it isn't and I'll only install it if there is a newer version for it (I use mediaMonkey which does everything except update the firmware.). Thanks

    Updates for "regular" iPods (that are not iOS-based iPod touch) are generally just bug fixes.  You should not expect any updates that add new functionality.
    Cool no need for itunes any longer than, I guess.
    I don't understand...  You still need iTunes to sync the iPod with content, and do maintenance (such as Restore) when needed.  iTunes will continue to support older iPods.  My ancient 3rd gen iPod from 2003 still works with the latest iTunes.
