Ignoring white when converting painted artwork to vector

I'm designing invitations and very new to illustrator. I have painted a small rose onto a piece of paper and scanned it. Have worked out how to live trace my scanned painting however, it is also tracing the white background. When I choose high colour option the ignore white option in the panel goes grey. If I choose to line trace etc the option is there to ignore white. Is there some way I can get a clear trace of just the image without the white background so I can manipulate it further? Thanks for helping!!

You need to xpand the options part of the trace panel and then set "Method" to the other option.

  • How to avoid transparent background converting to white in smart object(psb )when image trace High Fidelity as we have the option of ignore white upto 16 colors trace.

i have a psd image file in photoshop cc 2014 that has transparent background layer. I wanted it to convert to vector. The best option i saw was to first convert it to smart object in photoshop via Layer->Smart Objects-> Convert to smart Object. then exported it to a psb. Then i opened the file in illustrator and applied the image trace tool but the transparent background got converted to white but i had the option of ignore white upto 16 colors trace. But in case of High Fidelity Conversion, the ignore white option is not available, what should I do now?

after using  high fidelity image trace  i hit expand, then i went to layers and hit the drop arrow by my thumbnail, which then shows <Group>,hit that drop arrow and it will show a list of all your paths, the very bottom one was my white background, you can click the eye or delete that path and it disappeared for me. i was using a png file with a transparent background, and nothing else worked for me, it always converted with white background, i never saw this mentioned anywhere, and accidentally discovered it, hope it works!!!

  • How to preserve embedded artwork when converting to AAC 128kbps for iPod?

    Hi
I am using the new 'convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps ACC' option in iTunes 9.1.1 (12). All of my artwork is embedded in Apple Lossless files, but on conversion to AAC for the iPod this embedded artwork gets stripped out of the file. Instead I am getting about 12 ithmb files in the iPod_Control/Artwork/ folder totalling about 6GB which probably corresponds to all the embedded artwork for all the tracks, i.e. 20000 tracks x 300KB = 6GB, and an ArtworkDB file, which presumably is for CoverFlow.
Because I use PodWorks to backup my iPod Music to my Mac I would like all of the artwork to stay embedded in the AAC files, so that it gets uploaded to the Mac. Artwork stays embedded when you make an AAC version of an Apple Lossless track in iTunes normally, but not it would seem when transferring to the iPod. And if this new method of encoding on the fly to the iPod can't preserve embedded artwork then it makes little sense to clog up the iPod with 6GB of artwork!
I am wondering if there is any setting I am missing to get this working, or if this is something Apple still need to get around to sorting,
    Thanks
    Nick

    Please!!
    I'm not silly...
As I said, selecting View actual size shows the image with sometimes drastically impaired quality (regardless of the window size).
I also said I have preferences set to view at 100%
It now seems as if this is only happening with scans I've made here.
Images downloaded from the internet are converting indentically, no problem. But my scans are being resized when converting.
I wonder if anyone with a bit of technical know-how can give me some clues as to why this is happening. It would seem to be something to do with the file itself.
(There was another post on here with the same problem but for some reason its been 'archived' though the last posting was this month and the query was not answered. So I've posted the question again.)

I would try resetting your preference file first:  http://www.lightroomforums.net/showthread.php?14226-Resetting-(or-Trashing-)-the-Lightroom -Preferences-file
Also, install the latest version 4.4.1 would probably be a good idea.

  • Filling "Ignore White" holes after Live Trace/Expand

I'm relatively new to Illustrator CS4's Live Trace feature but have been using it a lot lately. When I place a Photoshop image (shot on white background) using Live Trace with the "Ignore White" box selected, it does a nice job of knocking out the background. However, after I Expand the Trace to create a vector image, I am often left with see-through hot spots on the object itself. When I try to select a hot spot to fill it with white, I can't select it. Normally one would use the Group Selection tool to select a specific path but the "holes" can't be selected. The only thing I can think of is to place a white "patch" behind the the object. Any other simpler ideas out there? Thanks!

First - before you can edit any LiveTrace object, you must expand the artwork (Object>Expand or Expand Apearance).
The paths created in LiveTrace are compound paths. You'd have to release the compound paths (Object>Compound Path>Release). All paths will default to the fill color of the original. Select the paths you want to color and fill.
You could avoid this by not ignoring the white when you trace. After expanding, use the direct selection tool (open or white arrow) to select the white background and delete. If you need some of the remaining white areas transparent, you may now select these and their surrounding elements and create compound paths.
One other way, again after expansion of the artwork, would be to use the LivePaint tool. Select the artwork, choose the LivePaint tool, convert to LivePaint object (Object>LivePaint>Make), then fill as needed.

  • Loss of Illustration (.AI) quality when converting FrameMaker to PDF

    Hello -
We're running into some unpredictable problems when converting a FrameMaker file to PDF. Our images are created in Illustrator (CC), and inserted into FrameMaker (12) as a linked file. In Frame, the illustrations look perfectly fine.
On export to PDF (Acrobat XI), whether "Save as PDF", "Print" to postscript, or "Print" directly to PDF, some illustrations show up "fuzzy" on the screen. It's not the entire graphic, but seemingly random sections of the illustrations that are pixelated. The illustrations are layered, vector, non-outlined .AI files.
Adobe PDF settings (in Distiller XI) are optimized for online viewing.
The reason I'm asking in the Acrobat forum is because if a problematic file is opened in Illustrator, the section that is pixelated in the PDF don't exist as overlays or layers in the AI file. When I say 'don't exist', I mean that if you select each and every layer individually, selections are never the entire pixelated area.
    Windows 7
    Adobe Illustrator CC
    Adobe FrameMaker 12
    Acrobat Distiller XI
Thank you so much in advance for your help.

We use structured Framemaker, and insert the graphic as an element. It is a linked file, not imported. The files, as I mentioned, are AI files, not saved as EPS or a rasterized file type. It is a full vector .ai file.
We have occasionally seen a similar problem when there have been overlays (to show dimension/shadows), but removing the overlay has solved the problem. What gets me, now, is that it is creating these seemingly random blocks in the graphics - as though parts of the illustration are being rendered as low-res bitmaps. In the PDF file, we can click on the poorly rendered section, delete it, and it removes a layer or two from the illustration, but the background is still intact (in other words, it doesn't leave a white gap).

  • CS6 Image Trace Ignore White feature does not work as expected coming from Live Trace in 5 and 5.5

When I click ignore white in 5 or 5.5 using say a basic black and white image I'm tracing, I get zero white. Usually for our purposes, we will direct select the frame and remove it then drag select all the artwork and color it whatever pantone the customer needs, save, place in the InDesign document relevant tot he image, and send to print. In CS6, ignore white leaves, ironically, a ton of white so deleting the frame and then drag selecting gives you a question mark in color and of course it follows that coloring, colors all kinds of things. Same picture, two different versons of trace and our job just got alot more time consuming.

This is exactly the criticism that I have posted on occasion.
Instead of producing an orderly stack of objects like Streamline did, Live Trace produces compound paths.
So if you want to simplify your trace and avoid duplicate paths you need to release the compound(s) and rearrange the stack. This takes time and a certain amount of skill.
With Steamline you could of course make your own compounds if you needed them, but making a compound is a simpler business than releasing one and editing the colours of the resulting stack.
Does anyone know whether Streamline is available for OS X?

  • Word 2003 crashes when converting to a PDF in Acrobat 9.3.1

OS                    :   Windows XP Pro SP3
    Acrobat Version:   Acrobat Pro 9.3.1.
    M.S. Product     :  Word 2003
Not every file will crash Word 2003 when converting to a PDF using Acrobat Pro 9.3.1 but this particular file and some others will produce the following error:
    %%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
    %%[Page: 1]%%
    %%[ Error: syntaxerror; OffendingCommand: )  '$ $ $ &$   ]%%
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
The co-worker was receiving the same error in Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.0 before we updated her to AAP 9.1.3.
I have read some other threads similar to mine but none of them answer the question well enough to try anything listed there.  My co-worker can email me the Word file and I can print the file to my Adobe PDF printer just fine.  I have Acrobat Pro 7.0.
Can anyone give me help on the cause and or solution to this problem????

    Hi,
    - syntaxerror indicates the file contains unintelligible PostScript code.
Any discussion of postscript errors, seem to consistently point to:

  • Acrobat X 10.02 crashes when converting Word 2007 document wiht linked Visio file.

Acrobat X 10.02 crashes when converting Word 2007 document with linked Visio file and causes a C++ runtime error in Word and crashes Word.
To see the behavior create a short Word 2007 document with a linked Visio file (e.g., create a Visio file with one box and text and insert it as a link into a Word docx).
    No problem in Acrobat 9

There may be some of an issue with AA X on this, but part of the blame probably goes to MS also. I would suggest you simply clip the graphic from VISIO as a vector graphic (EMF will be used by default) and not do the link and do not embed the VISIO object. The linking and use of embedded objects in WORD 2007 seems to have been a major problem and is mostly a MS issue.

  • How do I convert a pdf to vector in illustrator?

The artwork in the PDF might already be a vector graphic.
If not you need to trace it either automatically or manually

  • Why does spot EPS not output when converted to CMYK or grayscale?

Apologies if this is a known issue but I can't find it anywhere... I'm using AI CS3 (13.0.2) on an Intel iMac/Os 10.5.4 and I can't figure out why a white logo made from text outlines outputs fine to PDF if I use a spot color but if I change it to grayscale or CMYK, part of the logo doesn't output at all.
The part which self-destructs is a supplied roundel of Caflisch text which has been converted to outlines (unfortunately I don't have the font on my system to do any deep testing). Another part of the supplied logo is a line drawing which outputs fine in any color mode.
So I'm really looking for something to explain why the text part of this roundel outputs fine as a spot color but disappears from view when converted to CMYK or grayscale. I have been placing the file in a Quark 7.1 document and then exporting to PDF but I see the same problem when using the Flattener Preview.
    Thanks for any help.
    Simon

Sorry for talking to myself like this -- been doing it for years...
Finally found out what was wrong: the submitting designer had set the white coloured text objects to overprint. When I set them to knock out all was well.
Kudos to Acrobat Pro Preflight for pinpointing the problem.

  • Got problems when converting video to 640*480 m4v

guys, I got compatibility issues when convert videos to 640*480 h264 m4v.
I tried MepgStreamclip, and the export to mp4 quicktime mov in Quicktime. ALL FAILED.
I followed all these 1.5mbps, 640*480, aac-lc requirements when did the conversion. However, my ipod will not recognize of the files.
I have also noticed that the "Export to Ipod" preset in Quicktime has been changed to 640*480. BUT, what keeps annoying me is the preset is so idiotic!! It ignores the source bps and simply converts everything to 1.5mbps. I got 25mb file after conversion as the source file is 11mb.
Could anyone kindly point out the Right procedure to convert video to ipod format Manually...... I want to have full control when I am doing this.
    thanks a lot

    any suggestions?

  • How do I include a drop shadow effect when I import an Illustrator vector into Edge Animate?

How do I include a drop shadow effect when I import an Illustrator vector into Edge Animate? It should be noted that I also have another effect (an extrude & bevel) applied which does copy over when I paste (or create an SVG and import) into Edge Animate. Any thoughts on why the drop shadow disappears but the extrude & bevel carries over?

Which version of Illustrator are you using?
In earlier versions of Illustrator it is not that easy to apply drop shadows with spot colours.
Another reason why it's always important to tell which version of AI … well …
