ILife '04 or iLife '05 for tangerine iBook?

I am going to install Panther on my tangerine iBook (300 MHZ G3 processor, 288 MB Ram, 30 gig hard drive), and I was wondering if I would be better of installing iLife '04 or iLife '05 (after I've upgraded to Panther)? I am not too techie with computers, but I've been reading that this old iBook might not be able to handle many of those iLife applications.... How do the system requirements for the two iLife's differ? Will I have to do anything special to install iLife - either version - (besides plugging in an external DVD drive)....?
Any input would be appreciated....
Thanks!

Hi Olivia,
This iBook was intended for use in word, processing, database type functions, preparing documents and still shot presentations, as well as having "in the field" internet capabilities through its internal modem and Airport Card option.
It still fulfills those functions quite well, albeit a little more slowly than later models.
It was never intended for audio or video editing (which is what Garage Band and iMovie do respectively). Moreover, its inability to drive a DVD properly is a serious impediment to these sorts of activities.
For movie making, the OS 9 version of Final Cut Pro or iMovie would probably function, but you wouldn't be able to get stuff on and off the computer easily unless you were hooked in via Firewire to a network that included appropriate other computers.
For these applications to work, you would have to boot up in OS 9 - Classic won't support them.
I don't know what music making software was around for OS 9. Maybe try googling for it.
Cheers!

  • Latest Version of  OSX for Tangerine iBook

    Hello all,
When ever I look for the information on the minimum requirements for Jaguar or Panther it brings me to the requirements page for Tiger. I know Tiger is not compatible with this iBook since it does not have Firewire. Do you know what I would be able to run on this machine. I am trying to investigate some options for a friend of mine.
    Thanks all!

Niel already answered your question. I just wanted to point you to the OS X 10.3 system requirements. On www.apple.com/support/panther/install/ it statesMac OS X 10.3 requires a Macintosh with a PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor, built-in USB, at least 128MB of physical RAM and a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer. To find this page:
Click on the "Support" tab at the top of this page.
Then under "Mac OS", select the "Mac OS X v10.3 Panther" from the drop down menu.
On that page that appears, click on the "Get Upgrade Help Here" link near the top of the page.

  • Choosing language for the OS using CD provided with tangerine ibook

    Hello,
I have a french tangerine ibook running in french (macos 8.6) and I would like to know if it is possible to reinstall it in english using the CDs provided with the ibook.
Thank you in advance for your help,
    Anthony.

Thank you for your answer (although I was hoping for another one).
I just called the apple store and apple tech support and they both told me that neither mac os 8.6 nor 9.x were sold, and that it was not available for download.
So I have to buy a used english copy of mac os 8.6 or 9.x for my old ibook.
Fortunately, I have an adress in the US where I can have it shipped. So I looked on Ebay to find the CDs, and I can only find macos 8.6 for iMAC, not ibook. The name of the CDs are : "iMac Software Install SSW version 8.6" and "iMac Software Restore SSW version 8.6". Of course the restore CD would be of no use for me, but is the install CD a standard mac os 8.6 that includes all the drivers for my ibook ?
Do I have to specifically look for ibook CDs ?
I'm also considering installing a linux (like yellow dog linux), although I'd rather give the ibook with macos on it as the person I'll give it to is not very "computer litterate"... Could you advise me a light distribution of linux, as user friendly as possible ?
    Anthony.

  • Which OSX for my tangerine iBook?

I have an old tangerine iBook, with 300 MHZ G3 processor.
It has 288 MB of Ram & a 30 GB hard drive.
I think this is the P1 (original) iBook.... Is that right?
I would like to know which OSX would work best on this computer... Jaguar? Panther? Tiger?
I am a newbie, so don't be too techie with me!
    Thanks for the advice...!!!!

    Hi Olivia,
That's exactly what I have done with my daughter's Tangerine iBook - started off with a standard Panther installation and have kept the system current in every way up to 10.3.9.
She has no problems with her computer, it runs fine.
You would only need XPostFacto if you tried to install Tiger on your iBook, but why bother - Panther is quite adequate. Most of the new Tiger goodies are inaccessible to these iBooks because of hardware limitations anyway.
    Cheers!

  • Any printer suggestions for the ibook g4

I am completely overwhelmed and in need of some suggestion of the most compatable printer for the ibook g4. Mine is a 2004 model

    Hi Hotrodgirlly,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
What are you going to use the computer for and what features do you want(example: mostly printing documents, normal amount of pictures, professional photography, as well as all-in-one, scanner, fax, fast printing, portability, quality of print outs, etc)? Price range?
You may want to look at the following threads...

There are a ton of posts in Apple Discussions alone that can help you make a decision or narrow down your options. I suggest searching AD, Google, and any other search engine on the internet. Consumer Reports probably has a review section on new printers, but you can either buy it in the store or buy an online subscription (I believe).

  • Will install discs for an iBook (mid 2005) work on an older model (late 2004) ?

I have a nephew that got an old 1.2 GHz 30 GB iBook from a neighbor. It had OS X 10.4 on it, but was not running. I used some old discs from an eMac to fix the OS, but couldn't get any additional software to install. I want to get the newest install discs for this iBook (OSX 10.4.2 and iLife '06). I don't know if the discs will allow the install of the application software bundle to the older iBook. Does anyone know if it will work?

The eMac disk does not have all the necessary software for an iBook. If you reinstall the Mac OSX 10.4.x from a retail disk then your problem should be solved.

  • Purch. & installed upgrade from iLife 2 to iLife 08, but I have questions..

    Hi ~
_Purchased & installed upgrade from iLife 2 to iLife 08, but I have questions..._
First I made sure I backed up my 5,500 photos in iPhoto to an external hard drive. (The only downfall to this backing-up process is that I haven't found an easy way to back-up the comments attached to each photo. Any advice on this? Part of the "horror" to losing one's photos is also losing the comments added to them over the years.)
Back to the install... I installed iLife 08 and it installed correctly. I checked to see what version of the applications I have in the dock on my desktop - I figured it would just import existing data (photos, tunes, etc.) into the newer version and replace it in the dock - +it only did this for iDVD+, of course it wasn't that easy for the others.
I can't find the newer version of iPhoto. My iPhoto in the dock still says version 2. iTunes in my dock is version 7 (7.4.2). iMovie is version 3 (3.0.3). But the new Garageband is there in the dock. And of course, iDVD is the newer version '08.
I am most concerned with iPhoto and making sure all the photos AND their comments import correctly into the newer iPhoto 08. I am nervous about this so I want to make sure I do the process correctly.
I also want to make sure my iTunes information imports correctly to the newer version as well.
    Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Kathy

If you backed up the iPhoto Library Folder then you got everything - photos, albums, comments etc
I can't find the newer version of iPhoto. My iPhoto in the dock still says version 2. iTunes in my dock is version 7 (7.4.2). iMovie is version 3 (3.0.3). But the new Garageband is there in the dock. And of course, iDVD is the newer version '08.
The Dock is not important. Look in your Applications Folder for iPhoto 08. That's where it should be. The Dock is just a shortcut to that. What version is in your Apps folder?
To upgrade a Library from v2 to iPhoto 08 all you do is open the Library with the newer version.

  • Old Composite Video cable (Tangerine iBook) not compatible with Video iPod

    I discovered a little surprise.
Despite being exactly identical on both ends of the cable, an old Apple Composite Video cable, originally purchased for a Tangerine iBook, is not compatible with Video iPod.
Anybody confirms such situation, or is it just my Video iPod with a faulty video output?

  • Putting new parts in a Tangerine ibook?

I have a question. I have an old Tangerine G3 ibook that I put away when I had bought a Dual USB ibook. The logic board died on the dual USB ibook....so, I stated up the old Tangerine and installed it with OsX. I've already replaced the memory from the other ibook to the tangerine.
Now my question is....can the 700mhz processor and 20GB harddrive from the dead ibook, be switched into the Tangerine ibook? And if it can be done....how hard would that be? I do see the harddrive, under the keyboard, in the tangerine, but I don't see the harddrive in the dead one.

Putting a new hard drive in a Clamshell iBook is not easy:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/iBook-G3-Clamshell/49
So it would be better to put a complete new harddrive in your iBook because it is possible that your old 20GB drive will not last long....
The Clamshell processor is soldered to the logicboard.
The only way to upgrade the processor is to put a complete logicboard pulled from a 366 or 466MHz firewire Clamshell into the Tangerine.
I did this upgrade for my daughter for better performance and DVD movies. The 300MHZ iBooks have no firewire, therefor you have to drill a new hole into the bottom case.
The Clamshell's elder brother, the PowerBook G3 Pismo was the last one with a removable processor card. Third party upgrade cards provided more speed or a faster G4 processor.

  • Manual For Indigo iBook

Does anyone know how I might obtain a manual (online or physical) for an Indigo 366/iBook? The only original iBook manual I can find here is the one for the original blueberry and tangerine iBooks.

    Rick,
For technical details online see this site.
Here is the upgrade guide for the 'Paris' clamshells.
If you want the full technical manual; click here.
I can't find an electronic copy of the consumer-level manual though. Personally I don't thing you're missing anything. These manuals assist you in connecting the power supply and switching the Mac on and little more.
(I have the sales spec sheet in PDF form - I downloaded this just before I ordered my iBook 466 back in 2000 - if you want I'll email it to you.)

  • Tangerine iBook won't boot

My cousin has a Tangerine iBook, and she noticed today that it won't boot. She says the power indicator light ring around the power port isn't lighting up anymore, so I am guessing fried motherboard or the power adapter has gone bad. Does this make sense or are there other things I should be looking for? Thanks!

Try a different power adapter. Maybe one of your friends has a clamshell or a black G3 PowerBook.
It is a known issue that the cable connection between the yoyo power adapter near the plug breaks easily after some years of use - so don't give up too soon.
Next thing would be the DC-in board.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/iBook-G3-Clamshell/DC-In-Board/49/12/Page-1
When the plug goes in and out a thousand times it looses its contact and needs to be resoldered.
Sometimes the DC-in board is fried and the logicboard is still working.

  • Can I Go Wireless With this Tangerine iBook?

I would like to connect to the Internet in coffee houses, etc, using the wireless connection..... Can I do that with this old tangerine iBook?
If so, how? What will I need? (And how much will it cost me?) Is it complicated to hook it all up? I am not the most computer savvy person in the world....
    Thanks for the info!!!

Yeah, I've got a blueberry iBook right here... like they've said, all you need to do is slide an AirPort card into the slot underneath the keyboard, plug in the antenna, and you're good to go onto any 802.11b or 802.11g (at B speeds, though) network. AirPort Extreme isn't supported on this iBook, though, but that's no big deal.
In order to use AirPort, you'll need Mac OS X. You can use it under Mac OS 9.0 and higher if you install the AirPort software from the install CD.

  • Updating tangerine iBook?

    hi,
i realize that this is a very common question, but upon reading through a lot of the posts i couldn't find anything that completely/clearly answered my questions.
basically, i would like a laptop computer as it's a bit of a fight for the family computer and i will be attending university next year.
i don't have a big budget (i hardly have a budget at all, in honesty) and so i was wondering about the possibility of updating a tangerine ibook that has been sitting unused for a couple of years.
the initial issue with the ibook is that the power cable is extremely unsafe and sparking, but i have done some googling and i can buy a new one fairly cheaply, as with a new battery.
however, i was wondering exactly what else i would have to buy/do in order to upgrade to os x? how much would this roughly cost and could i achieve it on my own (i don't have much experience with computers in a technical aspect)?
also, is there any alternative to buying an original airport card?
    thanks!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I always recommend Crucial for RAM in the UK as they have good Mac support and guarantee it will work! You should install a 512Mb SODIMM for a 544/576Mb total which should keep OS X happy.
The hard disk will be a real tight squeeze if it's the original 3.2GB that you have once OS X is installed.
See this recent post on 2.5inch drives.
The Wireless bridge is probably the best way to go as Duane says however there are cases where user's have butchered their iBooks and a 3rd party card - not for the faint of heart (thanks Troy Enn for the link)!

  • Upgrade from iLife 08 to iLife 11?

So I never updated from iLife 08 to 09. I want to make the jump to iLife 11 for a variety of reasons (manly the upgrades to iMovie) - but I'm really unclear if I need to buy and upgrade to iLife 09 first or can just buy iLife 11.
I even went to an Apple store and asked two of the clerks there who weren't sure!
    Does anyone know?
If I have to buy both iLife 09 and iLife 11 and make the Snow Leopard update - it's getting into the price range that I might as well consider getting Final Cut instead.
I'd really prefer to just spend the $50 on iLife 11, if I can.
    Thanks.

Hey! I have a Macbook that I bought at the beginning of 09 that has iLife 08. So the iMovie on it was missing some features and I bought iLife 11 today. But when I try to install it, I get the message that my computer is not compatible and I need Mac OS X 10.6.3 or later and mine is 10.5.8
But I talked to the guys at the Apple store and told them what year my Macbook was before I bought iLife11 and they said it will work fine. What do I do? I've updated everything I can. I could go back and talk to them tomorrow, but I had already opened the box. Why would they sell me something I cannot use? Or is there a way for me to update?
    Thanks

  • Does anyone know how I can purchase or download a copy of OSX 10.4 Tiger for an ibook g3?

I am trying to "upgrade" an old ibook g3 (800MHz)
I have managed to get it up to OS 10.2.8 with automatic updates, but I would like to install OSX 10.4 Tiger (The most advanced compatible os for this ibook), But I have not managed to find anywhere on www.apple.com where i can purchase a copy?
Is there anywhere I can buy the original installation dvd, or download a version?
    Many thanks for your help

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
    It's available through Amazon Marketplace:
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Mac-10-4-Tiger-VERSION/dp/B0002G71T0
Ask before you buy, ask the seller to make sure it's the FULL RETAIL version.
    Another option:
    http://www.megamacs.com/index.php?action=frameview&id=3986857   (Not a bad price.)
Also, Tiger usually came on a DVD. Some 800 MHz iBooks have just a CD-ROM drive, so you need to keep that in mind and determine whether you can use the DVD version.
