ILife 06 compared to iLife 08

I have been reading that iMovie 08 will not be compatible on my iBook G4. If I purchase iLife 08 and load it will I still have the use of the old iMovie? Or should I just keep what I've got and continue to use 06. Thanks for advise.

Sorry, but my opinion of giving MagiMovie 08 a chance for quickies on the fly just changed drastically this evening:
My footage is in 4:3.
I set the poject settings to 4:3.
Export to iWeb became cumbersome.
The outcome: Some clips are stretched and distorted to widescreen, some are kept in their defined ratio. That is the greatest mess I ever got out of a software published by Apple! The output file switches between stretched widescreen an original asprect ration within the same file(4:3 was defined in the project window, prior to any import!). A horrible mess to look at.
These were some clips I of my last vacation that I wanted to post without much effort. No, this outcome is by far worse than my very first try using a video cam and iMovie 05. Sorry, but this is an unfinished piece of software, not by any chance near the quality or worth to be called in one line with the previous editions of true iMovie software Apple used to publich. Its MalClips, nothing more.
I strongly hope, Apple will NOT apply this concept and idea to its other software!!

  • Purch. & installed upgrade from iLife 2 to iLife 08, but I have questions..

    Hi ~
_Purchased & installed upgrade from iLife 2 to iLife 08, but I have questions..._
First I made sure I backed up my 5,500 photos in iPhoto to an external hard drive. (The only downfall to this backing-up process is that I haven't found an easy way to back-up the comments attached to each photo. Any advice on this? Part of the "horror" to losing one's photos is also losing the comments added to them over the years.)
Back to the install... I installed iLife 08 and it installed correctly. I checked to see what version of the applications I have in the dock on my desktop - I figured it would just import existing data (photos, tunes, etc.) into the newer version and replace it in the dock - +it only did this for iDVD+, of course it wasn't that easy for the others.
I can't find the newer version of iPhoto. My iPhoto in the dock still says version 2. iTunes in my dock is version 7 (7.4.2). iMovie is version 3 (3.0.3). But the new Garageband is there in the dock. And of course, iDVD is the newer version '08.
I am most concerned with iPhoto and making sure all the photos AND their comments import correctly into the newer iPhoto 08. I am nervous about this so I want to make sure I do the process correctly.
I also want to make sure my iTunes information imports correctly to the newer version as well.
    Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Kathy

If you backed up the iPhoto Library Folder then you got everything - photos, albums, comments etc

The Dock is not important. Look in your Applications Folder for iPhoto 08. That's where it should be. The Dock is just a shortcut to that. What version is in your Apps folder?
To upgrade a Library from v2 to iPhoto 08 all you do is open the Library with the newer version.

  • Trying to Upgrade iLife 5 to iLife 6 - Elusive Error

Hi, Searching the Apple website was unproductive.
I'm a paid user of iLife 5.0 with master installer CD. I have the receipt on file. I downloaded the various iLife 6 applications, ran the Apple installer to perform the iLife 5.0 to iLife 6.0 upgrade. The installer returned errors similiar to this on each of the various applications:
"You cannot install iDVD Update on this volume. An eligible iDVD application was not found in the location / Applications / DVD.app"
The above error message (obviously) fails to describe "why" and fails to describe what the user must do.
How do I upgrade from iLife 5 to iLife 6, is there an upgrade fee I must pay Apple?
    Any information will be appreciated.
    Thanks much.

  • ILife '04 or iLife '05 for tangerine iBook?

I am going to install Panther on my tangerine iBook (300 MHZ G3 processor, 288 MB Ram, 30 gig hard drive), and I was wondering if I would be better of installing iLife '04 or iLife '05 (after I've upgraded to Panther)? I am not too techie with computers, but I've been reading that this old iBook might not be able to handle many of those iLife applications.... How do the system requirements for the two iLife's differ? Will I have to do anything special to install iLife - either version - (besides plugging in an external DVD drive)....?
    Any input would be appreciated....
    Thanks!

    Hi Olivia,
This iBook was intended for use in word, processing, database type functions, preparing documents and still shot presentations, as well as having "in the field" internet capabilities through its internal modem and Airport Card option.
It still fulfills those functions quite well, albeit a little more slowly than later models.
It was never intended for audio or video editing (which is what Garage Band and iMovie do respectively). Moreover, its inability to drive a DVD properly is a serious impediment to these sorts of activities.
For movie making, the OS 9 version of Final Cut Pro or iMovie would probably function, but you wouldn't be able to get stuff on and off the computer easily unless you were hooked in via Firewire to a network that included appropriate other computers.
For these applications to work, you would have to boot up in OS 9 - Classic won't support them.
I don't know what music making software was around for OS 9. Maybe try googling for it.
    Cheers!

  • Upgrade from iLife 08 to iLife 11?

So I never updated from iLife 08 to 09. I want to make the jump to iLife 11 for a variety of reasons (manly the upgrades to iMovie) - but I'm really unclear if I need to buy and upgrade to iLife 09 first or can just buy iLife 11.
I even went to an Apple store and asked two of the clerks there who weren't sure!
    Does anyone know?
If I have to buy both iLife 09 and iLife 11 and make the Snow Leopard update - it's getting into the price range that I might as well consider getting Final Cut instead.
I'd really prefer to just spend the $50 on iLife 11, if I can.
    Thanks.

Hey! I have a Macbook that I bought at the beginning of 09 that has iLife 08. So the iMovie on it was missing some features and I bought iLife 11 today. But when I try to install it, I get the message that my computer is not compatible and I need Mac OS X 10.6.3 or later and mine is 10.5.8
But I talked to the guys at the Apple store and told them what year my Macbook was before I bought iLife11 and they said it will work fine. What do I do? I've updated everything I can. I could go back and talk to them tomorrow, but I had already opened the box. Why would they sell me something I cannot use? Or is there a way for me to update?
    Thanks

  • How do I upgrade from iLife 08 to iLife 09 after complete OS reinstall but have left disk in another country - Can I do it?

I just had to completely reinstall my OS from the startup disks on my MacBook Pro ... my Time Machine backup had been corrupted, so I started from the original disks etc.
I have now got back to OS Lion and iWork 09 and iLife 08, but have just realised that I do not have the iLife 09 disks with me as I have moved country and must have left them in my old house (in the cellar!!!).  Can i download the iLife 08 to 09 upgrade somewhere?
I also have iMac on which I had pretty much the same S/W configuration before I hit the problem that caused me to completely reinstall the OS etc.  I have a 'family' licence for the iLife 09 - can I use the installation on my iMac to install on my MacBook Pro?
    Thanks

There are numerous supporting files, i.e. themes, etc. that are required for iPhoto (and iDVD) so just copying the applications from the one Mac to the other won't do the trick. You need to install it.
You might try using Migration Assistant to copy your user account from the  iMac to the MBP.  Or, downgrade your iPhoto Library to iPhoto 7 (08) via this tutorial from iPhoto Library Manage: Fat Cat Software - iPhoto Library Manager Help - Downgrading a library to an earlier version of iPhoto. Then when you get the disks you can upgrade again to iPhoto 8 (09).
Otherwise you'll either need to wait till you get those disks (have someone ship them to you) or purchase a copy of the iLIfe 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com or whatever is available where you're currently living.

  • Running iLife 06 and iLife 08 together

I was just curious - plan to buy an Intel machine early next year. Could I post things on my web site using iLife 08 on the new computer and also post things on the same web site using iLife 06, which will be left on the old computer? Or do I have to maintain two separate web sites? The reason why I was thinking of doing it that way is just in case I like some features in one better than the features in the other.

Okay, just figured out a possible solution. While reading other posts, I realize that I can post a web site that uses a different user name. So will it work if I use iLife 06 with User A on computer A and use iLife 08 with User B on computer B?

MUCHAS GRACIAS OJALA ALGUIEN ME PUEDA COLABORAR.

    Saludos.

  • To go from ilife 05 to ilife 08 on Tiger 10.4.11

Anyone done this? Any "beware" tips. a DVD (from WeLoveMacs will be the installation disc.

Depending on the computer's configuration, you may find a newer iLife to not
be fully compatible. If you have a computer with graphic specifications less
than ideal for a newer version of iLife, or if the computer is older and maybe
should have the early version (iLife '06 or '05) that does not require much
fancy modern hardware to use its features, that may be the better choice.
(Note, the files created or edited in earlier versions of iLife may act different
or may be converted when opened by the later version; so they are not to
be expected to be backward compatible to the older iLife (iPhoto, etc) later.)
But, since you have no specifications, model or version of hardware listed,
having any idea beyond full-on speculation is all that can be offered. Some
G4 computers with slower processors, small graphic processors & VRAM,
limited optical drive without the ability to use DVD-R type media, and other
known factors, may not do so well with iLife '08.
    I have iLife 08 but did not install it into my older Macs running Tiger 10.4.11;
seemed easier to just use the retail iLife '06 which I was given instead; since
more could work adequately without question. And with an older iMac G4 w/
800MHz processor, 1024MB RAM, 17" LCD, Superdrive, and USB; that Mac
did not seem likely to support iLife '08; I included iLife 06 with that one when
I gave the computer away to a friend in near perfect condition with accessories.
Since I also have Leopard 10.5.x retail installer, I'd thought to maybe use iLife 08
with that - in one of my older computers here at some point. No rush, Tiger is fine.
When I finally upgraded the one iMac from Panther to Tiger about two years ago,
I had left the older included iLife suite in the newer system; later on, I decided to
replace the old iLife that was new in 2004 or so that was in the system packet, with
iLife 06 when I did a complete hard drive erase, overwrite with zeros and reformat.
And put Tiger in there from scratch instead of the patchwork upgrade it had inside.
So, anyway, you should read what versions of iLife are best supported in the
hardware you have; there should be some information on the software limits
with the software documentation and also online in Apple Support's database.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Ilife 6 and ilife 11 running together?

ok I don't have on yet but lets say I have a 2007 macbook with leopard and ilife 11. How would i get ilife 6 on it? If i understand it what I would have to do is delete ilife 11 then get a disk and install ilife 6. is there a way to have both of them running on the same computer together? If there isn't, is there a way to run all of ilife 11 except imovie, then install just imovie 6 from the ilife 6 to replace 11? can ilife 6 run on lion? can it run on leopard? Thank you for answers!

You can't run iLife '11 on 10.5 Leopard, iLife '11 requires Mac OS X v10.6.3 or later.  You can only run iLife '09 or earlier on 10.5 Leopard
When you get your iLife '06 CD about halfway through the installation there's a Customize button. This will allow you to only install iMovie HD. Since it's a different name it won't replace iMovie. You can have both of them in your Applications Folder.
iMovie HD (iMovie '06) can run on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion

  • IMovie 06 vs. iMovie 08 / iLife 06 vs. iLife 08

    Hi,
So, I have a to install an iLife group of products to edit some movies. My older movies were done with iMovie HD.
What are the experiences out there? Should I install iLife 06? Or should I install iMovie 06 and the other iLife 08 apps? Would they work together?
Just curious about other peoples experiences...
    Cheers, JP

I do not know which operating system you are currently on as you do not say in your post. I myself am running Tiger 10.4.11. I have installed Ilife 8 but I have also kept the previous version of ilife this is so that I get the best of both worlds.
imove 8 looks on the surface to be a great app with a glossy eye candy interface. But for the type of editing I need to do I need imove HD which is from the previous set of iLife apps.
GarageBand 8 whilst having some improved features does not allow me to export from it into Logic 7 due to it being built for Logic 8. So I keep both Garage Band 3 & 8 on the system so I can make the most of both apps.
I have made the leap across to the latest version of iDVD due to its enhanced quality when it comes to creating the DVDs and it has a more improved Muxing ability.
right now as things are if you want perfect bed fellow use Imove HD and the new iDVD and you get the best of both worlds. Great editing and great DVD authoring.
for bigger more in-depth projects I use my Final cut pro 5.
Itunes and I photo I have upgraded for their functionality.
and that's about the strength of it.

  • Upgrading iLife 6 to iLife 8

I have a G4 with iLife 6, all working well. Iam considering upgrading to iLife8. I really only want the iPhoto upgrade though.
I have tried to download version 7 (which I understand I need before installing version 8) but get the Message that I need more memory when trying to install on the H. Disc (42.87 g available) What should I do to get more disc space? Should I back up current iPhoto 6 library and then remove from applications?
Also, will I be able to install the other iLife applications without any trouble, does iMovie for instance require G5/Intel system?
    Yorvik

    Yorvik:
You have to purchase iLife 08 in order to get iPhoto 7 and then use the iPhoto 7.0.1 updater on it. When you install iLife you can select the Customize installation and only install iPhoto if that's what you want.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Upgrading photos from iLife 05 to iLife 06

How do I upgrade my photos so they work on iLife 06? It is saying, "Unable to upgrade this photo library because the current user does not have access. if possible, repair permissions for the iPhoto Library folder and try again."
How do I deal with that?

I'm in the same boat -- and now I've probably made it worse. I threw-out the picture that had stopped the upgrading process and emptied the trash - but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
There was no "lock" on the file and permissions seemed to be okay.
I'm feeling very unhappy about my iLife '06 purchase. My rationale for getting it was to speed up access to my photo library and to enjoy some new iDVD templates.
I'm using 10.3.9 and now I discover now that I have the box in my hands all the new features aren't available unless I spend more bucks on the upgrade to OSX 10.4. There was NO mention of this when I bought it off the Apple website. In fact, when I check it said that both OSX 10.3 and 10.4 were supported. Little did I know that 10.3.9 was "supported" but with a reduced feature set.
I wanted to reinstall iPhoto '05 and wait for someone to come up with a solution to my problem. I loaded the '05 disk and iPhoto is greyed out and not available under a customized install. Stuck again. Perhaps someone has a suggestion for what I need to remove to get iPhoto '05 re-installed.
So the ultimate end result is I have spent MORE money to get LESS than what I had before. I feel like an idiot buying this APPLE product. I doesn't work - and I don't know how to fix it. My frustration and anxiety level is at MICROSOFT levels.
I've read all the way through this section of the Apple Discussion Board and I'm happy some people have found solutions. I don't seem to be smart enough to figure it out.
In my case my warning reads - in case anyone sees something in the entrails that would explain my problem:
Unable to upgrade this photo library because the current user does not have access. If possible repair permissions for the iPhoto Library folder and try again.
    The path pf the item that failed is "/Volumes/Mars1/P I C T U R E L I B R A R Y/iPhoto Library/2004/05/21/Originals/DSC01374.jpg
As I mentioned - the file no longer exists.

  • ILife 06' to iLife 08'

    Hi there,
I have iLife 06'. Is there an upgrade to get to iLife 08' or do I have to purchase the retail version for $39.99?
    Thanks.

The retain price of iLife 08 is $79.99 but Amazon.com has it for slightly less, iLife 08.

  • ILife 4 - to iLife 6 - Is it worth it?

Running iLife 4 on my iMac @ home and was wondering if it's worth upgrading to iLife 6?
Also, is there a place where I can see comparisons / improved features between the two releases?
Taking someone's word is one thing, but seeing what has changed and whether I use a feature that has seen considerable improvement, is another!!
    TIA
    jP

    Hi james:
If iLife4 is giving you everything you need now and you are not having any issues with it, then why upgrade?
If you are looking for iMovie themes and a few more special effects, then I say go for it. Just a few things to consider:
