Is the new iLife only a retail purchase or can you download and add on top of iLife 5. It appears to be only a retail, but I wanted to see if I was missing something.

Nope, you're not missing anything, Jim. You can download the latest itunes, but everything else is only available in the boxed version.

I want to use iLife book program to prepare several pages for inclusion in a larger book, and need to download the work. If it is only usable to buy a book through Apple, it is virtually useless to me.

You can save a Preview of the work as a pdf. If that doesn't work then it's useless to you.

It sounds like you are trying to update to the new iLife versions after installing Mavericks. Take a look at this information from the article named:

When you first open the Mac App Store in OS X Mavericks, it will check to see if you have a DVD-installed (or bundled) version of:
Aperture 3.x
iMovie '11
iPhoto '11
Keynote '09
Pages '09
Numbers '09
If the apps are found, they will be listed with the other Mac App Store updates, and you will be prompted for your iTunes Store password. The apps will be added to your iTunes Store account.
If you do not receive the offer to install a different version via Mac App Store, click the Updates pane and install all available updates.

Problems with iLife on Macbook Pro.

I just bought a Macbook Pro which I setup, it told me that I had iLife to download from the App Store free as it was part of the package. However I had to reinstall Lion and now it says that I have to pay for iLife, anyone know how I can resolve it?

Does an upgrade to ilife 11 contain iDVD for use with mountain lion (10.8.5)? I received an advertisement about upgrading to iLife 11 and it discusses sharing via iDVD, which was disabled when I upgraded to Mountain Lion OS 10.8.5. Would purchasing the iLife 11 download restore the functionality of iDVD, or is this just another way to get the sheep to upgrade iMovie with no way to export to iDVD or equivalent. Why is there no Apple warning that Mountain Lion disables and does not support iDVD? I used to think Microsoft was a trickster, but I'm of the opinion that Apple meets or exceeds their slippery machinations. Am I just stuck with purchasing a 3rd party software to replace iDVD?

If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com. Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7. The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar. Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Registering imac and upgrading to iLife 11 - problem

I bought a new iMac (27') on October 2010. I am eligable to upgrade at the reduced price but when i try and apply online for the deal, I cannot progress as the apple website says that the serial number is not found!!!
I have registered the imac, but still waiting for a reply from apple. so what now. is that it? i have to pay full whack??

You shouldn't have to pay full price for the iLife upgrade. An alternative would be to print the form available here and mail it in.

IMovie iWeb can not open

When I used Cleanmymac software uninstall Aperture,Fina Cut Pro and Motion,     iphooto ,imovie and iweb can not opan.
     1,after i reinstall ilife11,updat,   iphoto can use.but imovie and iweb still can not open.
     2. then i restarted, When i try to open imovie and iweb,i can not see any dialog box and imovie and iweb as runing already,i can use menu bar of imove.
     3,i try to "Shift+command+V" restarted. it does not work.
     4, then,i use software updat,it show no upadat,   i install the update file of ilife 11 download form wwwapple.com.
     5,I set up a new user and try in the new user,it still in vain.
     6,I repair disk limits of authority.   can not open.

I am having the same problem. garage band is the only one that will open for me. I see the menu bar that says iweb, imovie etc, but nothing in there works (is all grayed out)... updated etc, but nothing. SL 10.6.8

Unwanted images

Unwanted images that happen to be downloaded from various sources are being saved in Iphoto. This started with the new ILife 11 download. Is there a setting to stop that from happening?

When I updated my laptop it no longer had iMovie on it. Why is this?

I updated my laptop because to use certain software I had to. I went to open up iMovie and found out that I no longer have this application. Why is this and is there a way I can get it back without having to pay for it?

Unable to use GarageBand under Lion: File not found.

I used Migration Assistant to copy all files, folders, applications, and settings to my new computer. The new computer can't open earlier GB projects I created NOR can I start new projects. Even Apple's own GB Demo Songs refuse to open. My old computer is an iMac Intel Core Duo running Snow Leopard. My new computer is an iMac Quad Core i7 running Lion (10.7.2). The message I receive when attempting to open old projects and demo songs, or create new projects, is the same: "The file couldn't be opened."
I reinstalled iLife and downloaded and installed all updates, but it still wouldn't work. I then re-installed all Apple Jam packs (though some wouldn't install completely in the much-newer environment) and I continue to get the same message, "The file couldn't be opened." My assumption is I need to delete one or more plist files but I don't have a clue where to begin.
I searched the knowledge base and forums but could find nothing about this, but I find it hard to believe somebody else hasn't had the same trouble. I'm hoping it's an easy fix! Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Hi, me too I have a similar problem. I have a macbook air mid-2011, Lion 10.7.2. I have been using GarageBand for a while now, even under Lion. And since this weekend, I can't open any of my files, nor can I create a new project. It says "Files cannot be opened". I do have the permission to read and write, so I don't know what's wrong. I did a test as a Guest and tried to open GarageBand, and yes I can do it. Still I don't know how I could create or open a Garageband project under my username. I have also tried to find my files with Time Machine but still GarageBand cannot open my old files. Any clues? Anyone?

Iphoto update troubles

I recently updated the software on my macbook pro to the latest update. After doing so, iPhoto will not open and it reads "incomplete". I am not sure how to figure out which update to install for iphoto because I am not even sure which one I currently have. The iphoto 9 updates require at least iphoto 9.0 and I cannot find that link. I have tried the iphoto 8 updates but they all say that they are part of iLife 09.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Fixated software updater in snow leopard?

The software updater on my Macbook Pro refuses to allow me to turn it off and make updates manually. Also, it is trying to reinstall iLife update 10.4.? several times/day. How can I stop it? There appear to be multiple copies of the iLife update downloaded but I do not find them when I search. What is going on?

I have looked in the download folder and found multiple copies of the latest update of iLife.
Then you need to delete all but one of them and install it.
I have also tried to uncheck the automatic software updater and change it to manual update or to change it to weekly, but it does not accept the change. Maybe I need to reinstall it? Will osx lion take care of this problem?
So it appears your preferences are corrupt for Software Update. You can delete them and then set it up again:
1. Quit Software Update if it's running.
2. Go to Home/Library/Preferences and delte the com.apple softwareupdate.plist file.
3. Restart Software Update and set it's preferences the way you want, then quit.
4. Restart Software Updatte and check to be sure your preferences stayed the same.
As for reinstalling, that would not solve the problem. Likewise, installing Lion wouldn't do it either, and there's no compelling reason to install Lion, unless and until you're familiar with how it will change existing applications and your overall user experience. Spend some extended quality time at the Apple Store exploring that before you even think of installing Lion.

ITunes' Coverflow under Leopard

Well, i use coverflow view in iTunes, with random songs, and all my songs have albumarts.
If i skip song (through the Apple remote or iTunes' buttons) Coverflow doesn't do the scrooling 1 song every 3.
Does this happens just to me?
P.S. unfourtunatly i did a mistrake: i installed Leopard and since i wanted to use iLife i downloaded iLife support 8.1.1 and installed on my macbook. I did this becouse i haven't internet on my mac at the moment (i'm writing from a stupid PC) and i red that an iLife update was released, but only today i realized that Leopard doesn't need that update. Do you think this is causing me some problems?

When i click the iPhoto icon, it poped out a window below:
And i clicked "Software Update...", it started to check the software updates, and return a message says "Your software is up to date."

I scoured the web looking everywhere for a solution to this.
Exit Code 15
OSX 8.5 with Work@Home DVD media for CS6
I followed instructions to run 3rd party cleaner software
I tried the adobe removal tool
removing all copies of adobe software manually
installing from a new account, safe mode, plist everything suggested that i found did not work.
A colleague suggested that removing the below folder would allow the installation:
/Library/Application Supports/Adobe
They turned out to be correct, so i am passing this on, because this took far too many hours of my time.
