ILife '08 or not

OK, so I have my old iLife running under Leopard. I can look at my pics, edit my movies from my DV tape JVC camcorder but I can't use iDVD to make the disc my family are expecting.
I know I should upgrade to +at least+ iLife '06 and preferably '08. I also know that I can downgrade iMovie '08 to '06 because I like to get involved in the editing and compilation of my work.
Question: what's the best policy? Or to put it another way, is the rest of iLife '08 worth having just to downgrade iMovie ? I could make use of the rest of the suite sometime but it's iDVD and I suppose iPhoto I'm looking at just now.
Ta

iDVD 08 has a preference option for a "professional" encode. Make sure you select that for great quality.
Before you start your DVD authoring, make a bunch of smaller projects in iMovie 08 that are only 30-60 seconds long. You can then use these for the iDVD dropzones as your animated menus.
The intermediate step from iMovie to iDVD is the Media Browser. If your computer has the horse power, export all your movies to the Media Browser as Large for a slight bump in quality. Medium is quicker to work with but looks slightly less sharp, something you will only see on an HDTV and progressive DVD player.
The one bad thing is that you have to go from iMovie to GarageBand, then to iDVD to add chapter markers exactly where you want them. If you don't want to take time with this extra step, you can still auto add chapter markers every ten minutes within iDVD.
Oh, and if you want to have separate features on your DVD, say the "main feature" and then "extra bonus material", edit main and extras as separate iMovie projects.
Have fun!

Can I move my iWeb from mac-mini to my new macbook pro ? iLife 11 does not have iWeb and I really want to use it to update my website on my new macbook Pro instead of Mac mini

There is no license required for iWeb.  Just do a Wyodor suggested and you'll be ready to go. If you're running Lion however, consider the following:
In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • ILife 11 will not install.

iLife 11 will not install, it gets past the checking stage and actually starts to install and then it says it has failed. The disk works on my Macbook.
    Thanks in advance.
    Peter

    Hi Peter,
This is a few months late relative to your post, but I just dealt with this. The full discussion is here -  https://discussions.apple.com/message/18030492#18030492
Here's the short version of the solution.
I just got off the phone with Julie with Apple Support in Oregon. Here's the deal - Apple knew about this issue with the iLife 2001 installer "expiring" after March 23, 2012, so they put the workaround to release the block to installation in a software update which they issued March 17 this year.
Julie said that the oldest OS for which this fix has been included is OS 10.6.8.
She also said there are two ways to get this software fix - one of course is to hit the Software Updater under the Apple menu and download it that way - and she stressed that if you install your OS off an older DVD (for example, the system disks that came with your machine), you will need to run through Software Update several times, until you get the word that your software is fully up to date.
The other way is to get on Apple's site and download DL1512 - which you can find here:
         http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1512
    "Apple Software Installer Update 1.0
This update addresses an issue that may prevent certain Apple software from installing. This update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X 10.6.8."
Having updated my OS, I retried installing iLife 2011, and voila - it installed.
So thanks to Julie at Apple Support!
Final note - The reason I had to reformat and reinstall my son's Macbook Pro is because he had installed Google Chrome and it tanked absolutely everything. The machine wouldn't even start up properly. Julie the Apple support lady said she has heard anecdotal reports about this.
    I hope this helps.

  • The preinstalled ilife programs are not showing up on my macbook pro

I just bought a new macbook pro that had been returned to best buy. When I turned it on the ilife programs are not there like they are supposed to be. What do I need to do.

You need to Register that Mac with Apple, Create an Apple ID (if you don't already have one) Log on to the Mac App Store with your Apple ID and then you should be able to download and install the iLife Apps that you want.
BB foramatted the drive and reinstalled the OS. In doing so the iLife Apps were not re-installed as they are not part of the OS. So now it is up to you to get them.
If the above steps don't work for you then you may need to call Apple to straighten it out.

  • My mac OS X is version 10.5.8 and I have ilife '11 and if I try to open it "iLife '11 is not compatible with your version of mac OS X" "it requires 10.6.3 or Later" What should I do?

My mac OS X is version 10.5.8 and I have bought  iLife '11 and if I try to open/install it says "iLife '11 is not compatible with your version of mac OS X" and
    "it requires 10.6.3 or Later"
    What should I do?

Buy a Snow Leopard 10.6 retail disk and upgrade? $29.
Or call iTunes, tell them what happened, and ask if it would be at all possible for them to issue you a refund & reverse the sale.

  • IMovie 5.0.2 from iLife '06 will not UPDATE on Intel Mac?

I brought over all my programs from my 12" G4 Powerbook to the new Mac Pro with Setup assistant. iMovie opened fine and seemed to work. A couple of weeks later, after doing regular software updates & working with it, etc., the Title function stopped working. Just does not show any options for titles under that spot in the menu.
I thought I would install it fresh and maybe that would take care of the problem, so I put in my iLife '06 DVD (pre Intel) and tried to install it. It was greyed out, so I thought it couldn't install it if there was a newer version on the computer, so I put it in the trash & deleted it. (Dumb, I know) & tried to reinstall but it is still greyed out. I figuered out this is probably because the older version of iLife '06 I have is not a Universal installer.
I copied the iMovie application from my Powerbook again, and now I have the PowerPC version of iMovie 5.0.2 on my Intel Mac, but when it tries to open it hangs. The instructions for opening programs with Rosetta doesn't work since there is no option to open with Rosetta in the Get Info for it.
How do I convert the 5.0.2 to iMovie 6 so I can update it to Universal?
    Thanks!

Can't you re-run Setup Assistant to bring over iMovie HD 5 from your PowerBook again?
A "pre-Intel" (i.e; non-Universal) iLife '06 might not install on an Intel Mac (..but I don't know: I don't have an Intel Mac ..though I'd have guessed that you could install it and run it under Rosetta). It might be that your "receipts" are messed up (..in name-of-your-hard-disc>Library>Receipts>iMovie..pkg..) but don't go messing there unless you put the iMovie packages in a safe place {..Desktop..] and move them back into the Library again after you've finished fiddling about! You may need to remove later receipts in order to install an earlier version of the program.
But I don't have an Intel Mac, so can't advise further, sorry.

  • Registered iLife, but iWeb not working

I purchased iLife '06, and finally installed it on my MacBook Pro, which also had iWeb on it. When I open iWeb, everything is greyed out. I can't use it. Any ideas?
Even if I didn't install iLife, I'm not sure why my laptop came with iWeb if I couldn't use it.
    Thanks

    Hi ewag,
So... you basically have iWeb and iLife '06 installed but you also bought iLife '06...
The installed iWeb isn't meant to be unusable it's meant to work but apparently a lot of people experience the same bug as you.
I usually recommend people to do the following:
Go to iPhoto, select some photos, go to Share and "Send to iWeb" (try both Blog and Photopages)
Many people report that going through this procedure 3-4 times awakens their iWeb...
I hope you have iPhoto installed and a few pictures in it...

    Cédric

    What a pain.

    4) Is this a forced hardware upgrade???
    Thanks for the help.
    All the best,

  • New iLife 11 Disk not working

I just got the iLife 11 disk and when I put it in my MAC mini it did nothing. Sat there spinning for a min and then spit it back out.
Any ideas why? I'm running 10.6.8

Return it for exchange. However before doing so double check the SuperDrive to see it's not that. Just try a music CD or something to check that it works.

  • DVDs burned using iLife 06 are not recognized

Hope someone has some advice for me. I have iLife 06 and have created a movie in iMovie. I sent it to iDVD to create the project and burn the DVD. So far, so good. But when the buring is complete, the DVD will not mount. It keeps getting ejected from the drive. All of my previous DVDs using iLife 05 work fine. I can't even make a copy of the DVD as it just won't mount. Help!

which program do I create the disk image?
    With iDVD:
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save As Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

even though imovie supports leopard i will still think that for the time being sticks with tiger for all your editing needs as there are some issues which might be questionable. leopard are now having quite a big issues on compatibility level. i myself got nearly 90% softwares not compatible to leopard that results me switching back to use tiger instead. i will wait till at least next year to starts install leopard becoz by then most of the issues should have solved.

  • I want iLife 8 but not iMovie 8, can old projects open in iMovie 6?

I have seen the new iMovie 8 and the missing functions makes it totally useless to me. I am very disappointed with the dumbing down of iMovie with this new version but enough has been said by many others about that already. However, the new iPhoto link to .Mac gallery looks good, and likewise the new version of GarageBand so I would like to get iLife 8 just for those, without using iMovie 8. I want to carry on using iMovie 6 for my old and new projects. If I upgrade to iLife 8 can my old projects continue to be accessed by iMovie 6 if I go to the "previous version folder" and open the application from there? I do not want to risk anything going wrong with the old projects before I have completed them. I definitely am not interested in even starting anything in iMovie 8 as I use all of the lost functions when editing my movies.
When I bought my first Mac 4 years ago, it was the sophistication of the iLife application that came with the computer, and particularly iMovie, that most influenced my decision to switch...nothing to do with iPod halo effects or pretty white hardware. If I was making the same choice now, I would not be similarly impressed and influenced by the capabilities (or not) of iMovie 8.
I can kind of see why there might be a need for the YouTube link up and webcasting functions in iMovie 8 for some people, but I still think that the majority of people using iMovie want to make good looking and sounding movies to store on DVD's. I really hope that Apple give us a proper upgrade to iMove 6 HD and a separate application for all the other simplified stuff.

Thanks both of you. All of the earlier projects that I want to open are in iMovie 6 so it looks as if that will still work.
QuickTimeKirk, I don't think I was really ranting ( I did that a few days a go and my post was deleted, so fair game), but I was expressing an opinion that from what I have read, is shared by many on this forum, and on others. I am not saying that iMovie 8 is absolute rubbish, it will work well for lots of people and has some good functionality if you want to make quick, simple movies and upload them to the web, but I sincerely believe that it falls very short for the many of us who want to continue to be able to do what we had been able to before with the old version. Whenever Apple had previously given us an upgrade to an application it had added not taken away...at least not so drastically as with iMovie 8. To me, not being able to at least edit sound or use a timeline, or themes, just means I can't get the same quality of movie I could before, therefore it is useless to me. I am just expressing my disappointment that a product that I had previously been impressed enough with to switch from PC's because of, no longer holds the same appeal. And I am only talking about iMovie 8, not Apple products in general, or the rest of iLife. I just wanted increased functionality, not less with a new version, and V8 is probably going to work for lots of people, but not for me. And I am not alone in that.

  • Blank cds/dvds not mounting, iLife '06 will not install

After auto upgrades to Tiger v10.4.8 blank cds and dvds will not mount but are automatically ejected. I have a superdrive Sony DVD RW DW -U10A. It will recognize and read cds and dvds that have data. I also attempted to install iLife '06. The installer v 2.1.0 said it could not install. Somewhere I read that these problems are related to the upgrades from Jaguar. Any ideas--chattrod

I wiped the HD drive clean twice , I have not migrated any of the previous HD data nor have I installed anything else other that the updates.

p.s I tried the ilife on this machine first, it failed.

Do other disks work in that machine? If not, it's probably got a dirty or damaged optical drive.

I was having problems with my iphoto 4 not uploading my pictures so decided to upgrade my ilife software to 6. Everything installed fine except for iPhoto, I click the icon to open and nothing happens and now the icon changed to the paper / letter A icon. I looked at the system requirements and I believe I'm okay. Anyone have any ideas or solutions for me?

This looks like a faulty install.
Drag the iPhoto application from your Applications Folder to the trash
then go to HD/Library/Receipts and delete any pkg file with iPhoto in the name.
Then re-install iPhoto - you can do a custom install, you don't have to re-install all the other parts of iLife.
    Don't forget to repair permissions.
