ILife 08 - yes or no?

I am putting together some DVD's for christmas and am contemplating purchasing ilife 08. I have ilife 06, but with all the problems iMovie has been having in the new version I wanted to know if they were fixed or not with the lastest update.
If not I will stick to using 06, but wanted some opinions.
Thanks in advance.

I am not having any issues with 08, and I have made about 40 movies in the past 4 months using source material from VHS tapes, mini-DV, and AVCHD. But I rarely use DVD's. I share with friends and family through a personal website which links to .mac webgallery. I have burned DVDs to test, however, and they work fine.
I would say if you have a Christmas deadline, stick to what you know. Then explore iMovie 08 after Christmas when you don't have the time pressure.

  • My new MBP is really messed up and I am wondering what I should do.

(sorry for the mess of a post. I just had the good news of having brain cancer and they put this dressing all over my entire head I can barely see, but I want to post this, so I am going to give it a shot.)
I went to see a genius at the local apple store. After spending 1 hour trying to fix all the software and hardware issues, he went to the back of the store, came back and said we are getting you a new MBP with all the equivalant upgrades you had with the other one (the one that had all the problems). I received the new MBP, the same genius said if I leave my old MBP with him he will transfer all the data over and call me when it is done. I got the new MBP, have had it for about 3 weeks and there are more problems than ever. I have no idea what this would do to a new computer but the genius transfered all my data/files/settings over to my new MBP and he did this before or without fixing all the software problems I was having on the computer he transfered my date from.
Now my software updates... is not working. I read the article, trashed 3 apple.softwareupdates.com preferences wit no help. I find out that he said after I asked about iLife; "yes you will get iLife, all Apple computers come with iLife. There is no iLife 09 just my old iLife 08. When I spotlight iLife 09, no iLife comes up only in emails. It does not even pick up my old 08iLife that is in a folder which was transfered over from my old computer.
The manager at the apple store said to install iLife09 from the gray disk. However, for some reason the new updates my computer needs are not triggering the software updater telling me there are new updates. It looks like the genius did an update before I picked it up and it updated one security issue, but no iTunes 9/1/1 or any other updates I should have received when I look at all the recent MBP update (Apple updates only) list.
When I do go to look at the current updates for this computer it brings me to an Apple website that has all my old updates from the old MBP and in a Finder file it shows all the updates from the old computer and just the one that the genius updated for me.
Does any body have any idea what I should do? It is frustrating. I would like to just start from the beginning with the new computer, wipe everything off and install it all new and get rid of all the stuff from my old MBP that was transfered to my new MBP.
    Thank for any help.

I would wipe the hard drive and start from scratch. The only thing I would save from the old comp are documents, movies and music also make sure you have any passwords or mail that you need to keep. I would avoid Time Machine and just do a normal backup. Boot from the installer and go to disk utilities in the menu and erase the hard drive. When that is done do a custom install and avoid any demos and software you don't use. Install QuickTime 7 from the optional installs.
Then manually download and install the OS updates before installing any third party apps avoiding the combos. Depending on your install OS version you may not need all those below.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosxv1061update.htm l
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosxv1062update.htm l
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1018
When you are done run software update and install the security updates only. When you are done with those you can install whatever application updaters there are and then move on to installing your third party apps.
Hope everything works out for you.

  • Slow to load iweb pages on dotmac

I had a lot of trouble uploading my latest iweb creation on dotmac- I had to browse this forum for a solution to the error messages I kept getting from iweb- certainly not user friendly!
The Apple forums are extremely buggy and do not load consistently on any of my macs at either work or at home- but that is seperate issue-
(Another site on my other dotmac account also had lots of problems but loads fairly well most of the time on my macs but not on windows firefox or IE)
Now the site is uploaded to dotmac but will not render consistently via my mac at work or at home ( 2 emacs and 2 powerbooks- all fully updated and-on different networks) HOWEVER- my site loads more quickly on our windows NT computer running IE 5 (the quicktime movie does not load tho')- the load time is extremely slow and I am left with space holders on the page because the page never fully fills in.
I am not sure if this is a dotmac problem or an iweb problem-
the program is buggy on any of our four computers
I am not impressed with iweb or dotmac and to think that we are expected to pay each year for this kind of inconsistent service- after shelling out good money for the new iLife- yes I know we get lots of other goodies with it- but I bought it mainly of iWeb

The Apple forums are extremely buggy and do not load
consistently on any of my macs at either work or at
home- but that is seperate issue-
Not really. It probably indicates that you have network and software problems which can't help but affect any connections you have with .Mac. Most people have zero problems with the forums.
Now the site is uploaded to dotmac but will not
render consistently via my mac at work or at home ( 2
emacs and 2 powerbooks- all fully updated and-on
    different networks)
Sounds more like local problems. If you would provide a url, someone could independently verify whether specific issues you see with your site are really there.

  • What version of iPhoto do I need to work with Photo Stream?

My photos taken on my iPad do not appear on my iMac even though  ICloud is set up and working.  I think the problem is that my version of iPhoto is 7.4 and I need 9.0 or above for iCloud to transfer photos without syncing.  I do not have iLife.  Will I have to purchase that in order to get the correct version of iPhoto so it will work with iCloud?  I don't really want iLife but if it is the only way i can get the iPhoto version I need, I guess I will have to purchase it.

    "I do not have iLife"
Yes you do. It has been standard on all Macs for about 9 years.
"I think the problem is that my version of iPhoto is 7.4 and I need 9.0 or above for iCloud to transfer photos without syncing.  I do not have iLife.  Will I have to purchase that in order to get the correct version of iPhoto so it will work with iCloud?"
Yes, you will need to purchase iPhoto 9 to use iCloud Photo Stream.
Go to Apple menu > App store.
You can purchase only iPhoto 9 ?$14.99).
You do not need the entire iLife 11 package.

  • ILife 11 - Yes Yes No No

    Hi
    Now I got hands on.
YES - TimeLine is back ! Rudimentary but much better !
YES - RubberBand - audio level ajustment is back - GREAT ! !
NO - No Back to Camera via FireWire (or to Monitor for Quality Controll) - BAD
NO - Still not the tool for us making DVDs - - BAD BAD - Apple was = to Quality for
me so this is a real enigma. Compare Logic and other pro tools that evolve to an even greater qualty.
    Bonus
    • Trailer maker - This I never figured out - a real supprice - if they make it to use Photos too then it's 100%
    • STORYBOARD - YES YES YES - This is a tool that might bring iMovie back to education
(it halted by iMovie HD6 - rest was far from logic and intutive)
My up till now feeling for this - It really got me to be interested to try it out
and if I can figure out HowTo get a good final result DVD or whatever so I can share
my monumental 6 hours vacation movies.
    Yours rather uplifted Bengt W

Nop - It did not - Neither in iMovie'11
I really wished for a way around - or -
Any way to get my SD PAL miniDV projects to a Flat-screen with as good quality possibly.
Only way I found is by using my LapTop and in iMovie Playback full screen and connect
this to LCD-TV or Projector. This looks OK as I can judge it.
Still in need of way to deliver to other users in as full quality possibly.
    Any suggestions ? Anyone ?
    Yours Bengt W

  • ILife no, iPhoto Yes...

I want to get iPhoto, but don't want to pay for the iMovie, iDVD, GarageBand, or iTunes.
I already have DVD Studio Pro, Final Cut Express HD, and iTunes 6, and I am not interested in GarageBand at all.
Is there a cheaper way to get a non-pirate copy of iPhoto 5?
    Thanks

    Hi William,
As I recall, you install the CD/DVD and go through all the beginning steps until you get to the actual installation. At that point there should be a button for a custom install, and then you choose what you want to install.

  • Hard drive issues related to a recent install of iLife 2005

    SOS!
I have a G3 iBook (18G internal memory) that I use with a LaCie 250GB FireWire external drive.
Since I have so many Gigs of music, pics, etc. I've removed all my personal files off the startup disk and have them stored on the external drive leaving only operating system and applications on the start up disk.
So...I just purchased iLife so that I could use the upgraded iPhoto. In the process of trying to install iPhoto I was told I didn't have enough room on the start up disk to load the application. So, I went through my hard drive and deleted a few unnecessary applications (like games, NOT anything essential to run the OS) and moved every byte of personal files to the external drive. In the process I was able to remove only enough to make about 1.7G available left on the HD. The iPhoto upgrade did install successfully.
So, now I have the upgraded iPhoto but I've got two issues, the second one seems to be directly linked to this install.
1 - I can not figure out what is taking up so much room on my startup disk. I don't have any large applications except the Apple applications and MS Office X -- no other games, database software -- I even moved my copies Illustrator and Photoshop onto the external drive. I am concerned that having so little space left on my startup disk is going to cause problems through I can't figure out what else to delete. Is there a software I can run to uncover any hidden files?
2 - Since this install my MS Word will not open documents. It simply freezes up. All the other apps in the Office X suite work fine --- MS Word is the only app effected.
These are perplexing issues -- any help in diagnosing what is going on and/or what I should do next would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for listening!
    Meredith

    Hi,
The trash file is a good suggestion --- I did delete pictures from iPhoto but perhaps didn't purge them from the Trash so there is a "copy" still in the trash. I'll give that a try tonight and if correct will change this question to answered.
Otherwise, yes, I moved files/apps then trashed the main copy.
    Thanks for your help!
    Best, Meredith

  • ILife 08 Audio Loops Don't Work In The Browser Of Soundtrack 1.5 ?

Yes, I know this is the FCE forum but I also know a lot of you use Soundtrack !
This had me puzzled for nearly an hour until I spotted what was "wrong".
The iLife 08 audio loops are .caf files, not .aif.
They DO NOT play in the Browser of Soundtrack 1.5 but they DO play when they are dragged into the Timeline. So it means they can't be previewed.
Now here is the queer thing ....... they play perfectly in the Browser of Soundtrack Pro 2.0.
So is there any way of making the Soundtrack 1.5 Browser play .caf audio or is it just not compatible? .............. It's strange that they are OK in the Project Timeline.

    Ian,
It appears Amadeus Pro will let you convert the .caf files to something else. I suppose other programs will also convert the files and maybe that's not what you want to do. Here's a bit from the Amadeus Pro manual:
3.7 The Apple CAF File format
This is a format developed by Apple and designed to replace AIFF in the long term. It removes the 2GB file
size limitation of AIFF and supports a wider variety of compression algorithms.
While the CAF file format does in principle support sound data with many channels, the current version of
AmadeusPro only supports the reading and writing of mono or stereo files in this format. AmadeusPro
will therefore downmix multitrack documents to a mono or stereo file, whichever is more suitable.
Metadata is lost when saving to the Apple CAF format (this may change in the future, as the format in
principle supports the inclusion of metadata).

  • Unable to update iPhoto and other iLife products

    Hi,
I bought a MacBook Air last year, which came with iLife pre- installed.
    The iPhoto version is 9.1.1.
But for some reason I can't get auto update for it.  I tried to register it, hoping that this may solve the problem, but it requires a MPN number which I don't have.
I also tried to download the updates from Apple online download, they would not install.
Can anyone help resolving this problem? Any suggestions.
    Many thanks.
    John

    Thanks much.
Indeed after I moved back the apps, they are now updating. I guess that's the trouble for being too anal.
One more thing, after iPhoto is updated, it still gives me a message "A photo has been found in the iPhoto library that was not imported", but if I click "Yes", nothing was imported, and there is a Recovered Photo folder, but it was empty.
    Any suggestions on the fix?
    Thanks again.
    John

  • Can't restore iLife after reinstalling Mountain Lion

After I erase the internal disk and reinstall Mountain Lion, I followed this instruction which Apple provides officially to restore my iLife:
Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion
If you erase install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion on a new Mac that shipped with OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion installed, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
After installation, start (up) from OS X.
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.
However, when I finish #5, I can't find my iLife apps are listed in that "Purchases" tab. Can anyone help me solve this problem?

Yes, that is what is supposed to happen.
    I'd contact MAS support

  • ILife 08 iMovieLack of Video Effects

I loaded iLife 08 and like many of the features but it is a big step backwards especially in iMovie. A few issues are: When finished iMovie, the requirement is to export the movie to desktop and then import to iDVD 08. This seems to be the only way to get the iMovie into iDVD. It took me almost 5 hours to export the iMovie to the desktop and then another 3 hours to make the DVD in iDVD. The video was 58 minutes of mixed photos and movies combined on a recent trip I took. Additionally, the lack of tools in iMovie to enhance the video movies - i.e., rain, aged film, sepia, black and white etc are no longer there. Depressing as those things made movie making in iMovie 4, 5 and 6 really unique. A work around is to do the aforementioned things to your movie clips, export them to the desktop and then import them into iMovie 08. The effects work. if you import iMovie HD directly into iMovie 08, the effects are not present.
I hope Apple hears some of us grumbling and add these things back into iMovie 08. Sure is a hassel to use the old version to enhance the new version.
iDVD is OK and I like the auto chapter making the best but iMovie 08 NEEDS MAJOR IMPROVEMNENT!!

Yes, all very interesting but this is the iPHOTO forum.
    Regards
    TD

  • ILife '08 CPU Drop In DVD will not load

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro (OSX 10.5.8) and after reinstalling my OS, I tried to reinstall iLife '08 using the drop in DVD included with the computer. The disc is inserted, spins for a while, then ejects without any message... How can I get this software reinstalled? Does this DVD actually function as an installer (Why else would I have it?) I do not have another mac available to test the DVD with, but here are my computer specs if you need them:

drop-in DVD? please clarify what you mean by that. do you mean the drop-in dvd that came with your computer in addition to the original tiger install disks? such disks were included with computers that came out around the time leopard was released. ilife is not present on such drop-in disks. or do you mean the original grey install disk that came with your computer?

  • ILife '08 "CPU drop In DVD" licensing

    Hi all
I just bought iLife '08 from an established online store. The package is new and intact as well as all the stickers, but the copy is not retail, it says "CPU drop in DVD" and "not to be sold separately".
What is Apple policy on reselling and using unregistered OEM software? Does this copy present the same value as a torrent download? Apple store reps all say "yes, it's legal for you to use this copy" but I've had my share of software licensing researches, it feels like an enormous morass.
If you have run into this specific issue before, please help. Thanks!

    Thanks, Terence
The only iLife '08 license that I have found on Apple's website (not really linked to from anywhere, had to guess the address) did not include a note that the grey apple OS DVDs include, that they may not be sold separate from the hardware they came with (that would make separate re-selling them illegal). But, in case of iLife, the original owner's responsibility is to destroy his copies.
FYI, the license included with the drop-in DVD disc is (in this case) identical to the box license I downloaded from Apple's website. So, my faithful 5-years old Alu has got the long overdue upgrade from iLife v4.

  • Can no longer attach my photos to documents since upgrading the iLife 08!

I upgraded the iLife 08 and am adjusting to the new format BUT I am feeling frustrated and po'ed because when I make word documents or want to attach photos to emails, no can do! For some bizarre reason, the Pictures tab, then the Library, no longer is accessible. So I go into the iPhoto, save the photo to the desktop, then insert it into the document. But that is time-consuming!
What happened to being able to easily and conveniently going into the Library and selecting whatever photo I wanted and inserting or attaching it?
I feel like I got ripped off...$80 for a big headache. Yes, am whining, but am hopeful that someone can help. I almost miss my old PC, that is how frustrating it has been...

  • I have a new Mac Book Pro with iLife 11 that does not contain iDVD, where can I buy it?

I worked since 7 years on a iBook G4 and made hundreds of DVD with iLife. When I bought the Mac Book Pro at the Apple Store they told me that iLife 11 does no more contain iDVD but it works differently. Now I miss this software that was easy to work on. I couldn't fint it at the App.store. Where can I find it?

Make a couple of phone calls.
iDVD is a “Must Have".   (Yes, it should be included.)
Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.
    800-692-7753
    800-275-2273
Most people report that by asking here:   http://www.apple.com/feedback/idvd.html
    or here:   http://www.apple.com/contact/
they got a free copy of iDVD.
If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11 on disk (don't get the download) for about $39.
