ILife '11 broke my iPhoto

I just installed iLife '11 on my iMac (OS x 10.9.5) and now when I try to open iPhoto it says: "You can't open the application "iPhoto" because it may be damaged or incomplete." HELP?? Please tell me my photos are still safe?? What do I need to do to fix iPhoto?

When you install iPhoto from the iLife 11 disk it will be v9.0. You can run v9.4.3 so you'll need to use the following updaters to get to it:
update to iPhoto 9.2.1
update to iPhoto 9.3
update to iPhoto 9.3.2
update to iPhoto 9.4
and finally to iPhoto 9.4.3
or go to the App Store and download iPhoto 9.5.1.

  • When i installed ilife 2010 I lost iphoto.  How can I find it?

I need help.  I installed ilife 2010 today on my Macbook OS X 10.6.8.  How can I find it.  The icon on my dock has a circle with a line drawn through it and it says it has been damaged.  How can I uninstall this **** ilife or find my iphoto.  I have thousands of pictures of family on it..
    Grandma

Well you have a back up, right? Why not just roll back to before you installed?
That's the simple and fast solution.
    Other than that, reinstall iPhoto.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • Can I install Leopard and iLife 09, but keep iPhoto 05

    Hi,
I've tried looking for this answer and have come up empty. Can anyone tell me if I could upgrade my system to Leopard and iLife 09, but keep certain iLife 05 programs like iPhoto 05 and iMovie HD? The new box set is a good deal, but the new versions of those two programs sound worse than the old ones. iPhoto 09 seem to be a space hog with multiple copies of every picture, and iMovie 09 won't even run on my processor speed. I was also worried that iLife 09 programs might be too powerful for my older Mac and hang it up, but iLife 05 would be unsupported on Leopard and also get hung up. Anyone have any thoughts on this subject?
    Thanks,
    Ed

iPhoto 09 seem to be a space hog with multiple copies of every picture
iPhoto '09 keeps no copies - it will, just like iPhoto 5, have either two or three versions of a photo - the original, a thumbnail and if required a modified version
For this you get non destructive editing and always have the ability to revert to the original (the digital negative)
iPhoto '09 does take a lot of CPU resource - I have a 2.1 GHz G5 and it does bog down from time to time (the 8.0.3 upgrade made this much worse - I'm hoping that 8.0.4 or what ever improves the CPU needs)
And the feature set of iPhoto '09 is amazing compared to iPhoto 5 -- unless you have a memory shortage, or a disk shortage I would expect your 1.8 GHz G5 to handle iPhoto '09 acceptably - I've seen no one say it is worse that iPhoto 5 or 6 - an very, very, very few people have gone back to '08 (the report - I suspect that they stick with '09 for the most part since it does so much more)
Just the new format books with laminated photo covers and photo dust covers are reason enough to upgrade for me (and lots of others) - samples of the new book layouts can be seen at Liz Castro's web site - http://www.lizcastro.com/iphotobookthemes/

  • The Jump from Snow Leopard to free Mavericks OS broke my iPhoto..

I updated my macbook pro today. I jumped straight from Snow Leopard to Mavericks. It was just like installing a really big app from the app store. However, it left iPhoto in the weeds of incompatibility. It was the latest version supported by Snow leopard and compatibilty instructions from Apple said I my computer met the requirements for the updated OS. Now my iPhoto has a big white circle with a line through it indicating that this version of iPhoto is not supported on the new OS. I cannot even view my pictures folder since it is in this broken iPhoto folder. Talked to Apple iPhoto specialist and he was super cool and checked with superviser but came to the conclusion that there is no conclusion at this moment. Day 1 downloaders should always consider this risk. I was just excited after seeing todays keynote and went for it on the macbook pro. This is what we both concluded..
The suite of apps in iLife and iWork were usually purchased via physical disk or preinstalled when purchasing a Mac a couple years ago. So there is no update for these in the app store (the new way of obtaining and updating software). This was a bit of an oversight in todays launch of new products. I was instructed to wait a few days and see if there is a "patch" for this error of compatibility. I can be patient and wait for this, but if there is no patch... Then I am in a great deal of trouble with my Wife! Lol seriously, she had a bunch of our wedding, honeymoon, and newborn daughter pics on this laptop and I foolishly updated without backing up. To my credit, I did my homework and learned that it "should" leave all my content as is. It is like the IOS updates that just overlay the software and replace only os stuff. This was true. Everything is exactly where it was before, only I cannot access the pictures, open iPhoto, update iMovie (it prompts that there is an update, but takes you to the app store updates page and it is not there). Basically at this point, I have to re-buy iLife and iWork because my versions are too old for the operating system released today. This would be fine if I was informed that my paid apps would need to be re-bought, but Apple stated that my device was compatible and this would be a simple update much like any other app. I also have extended apple care protection for our products, but the apple support guy said that store support will not have a fix at this time either. I suggested to take note of this particular issue because anyone who jumps from Snow Leopard to Mavericks may likely face this issue. I suggested that they offer a patch for the mistake or offer a free iphoto download (or other native app that broke in the process).
Other than my iLife and iWork apps not making a clean jump to the new OS, I really like the features and fluidity of the system. Apple makes high-quality products and innovates. I am not upset at all. Just a bit frightened because if I lost these photos and videos, you are reading a dead mans words.
Any thoughts or suggestions are much appreciated.

The same thing happened to me, since I have iPhoto 9.2.3
There is some kind of "direct access" to your original photos:
    /Users/[your user name here]/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Masters
All pictures should be saved there, organized by year...
iPhoto will still not work but at least you can recover your photos.

  • Iphoto won't open and has a message that it may be damaged or incomplete when I try to open.  It worked fine yesterday and I loaded ilife 11 and now iphoto won't open.

After I loaded ilife 11 and tried to open iphoto, I could not and had a message saying it may be damaged or incomplete.  It was working fine yesterday and I've never seen this message.  What should I do?

First run Software Update so you have the latest version.
If you still have trouble then hold down CMD and OPT as you click on iPhoto.  It will give you options to rebuild your library.

  • Installed iDVD from iLife 11 and now iPhoto won't open

Despite the decree from Apple that physical media is dead, I still wanted to make a DVD of something I made in iMovie but I could not find iDVD anywhere on my 2011 Mac Mini. Since iDVD was available in the App Store, I bought a copy of iLife '11 from Amazon and installed iDVD only (everything else was greyed out, except iWeb which I deselected). Now I can no longer open iPhoto! I can't remember the exact dialog box warning, but something about being damaged (I'm away from my Mac). I ran software update and there was an update for iDVD which I installed. I've restarted, I've repaired permissions, and nothing works. I've tried holding down Option while opening iPhoto but it still says it's damaged or incomplete.

In order to burn DVDs which are playable in DVD players (and TV), you need authoring/burning software - Finder cannot do that. It can burn DVDs which will play in computers, but not in DVD players. And yes, there are other burn software solutions; however, not one is close to the capabilities of iDVD.
For the OP: How did you initially obtain iPhoto? I would do a systemwide search and throw anything with iPhoto in the trash (don't empty!) - then reinstall iPhoto from the Mac App Store (if that is where you got it initially). If you can get past those hiccups, iDVD works well with both Lion and Mountain Lion; I have it installed and just finished a big movie project with it.

  • Can I go back to my iLife '08 version of iPhoto?

I have Mac 10.6.8.  My hard drive crashed, but since I had everything backed up using Time Machine, I feared not.  Apple replaced the hard drive.  My husband did not use migration assistant to set up the new hard drive since he reasoned that it was corrupted and would mess up the new one.  He set up new user accounts.  Ever since then, I have not been able to get iPhoto to run.  It just freezes.  I even upgraded to iPhoto 9.2.2 and still nothing works.  It tells I must upgrade and then when I try to do that, the program crashes.  I took off the iPhoto files as recommended by one of the super users and re-installed iPhoto 9.2 from the new iLife '11 disk from Apple.  It still doesn't work.  I took all the iPhoto stuff out of the folder var/db/receipts and reinstalled iPhoto from iLife '08 thinking that would at least let me open the library.  No such luck. I am wondering if I should give up on iPhoto.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • ILife '09 Install Just iPhoto

Is there a way to install just iPhoto '09 from the iLife '09 Install Disk. If so, how? I would like to install it on an external HD partition that has Leopard on it.

Look in your pictures folder. There you will find the iPhoto Libary. Simply copy this library to the new computer's pictures folder.
If you have already run iPhoto on the new computer you might need to delete the iPhoto Library that is there. (Assuming that there is nothing in that library that you want to keep!!!!)
When you open iPhoto on the new machine it will convert your old library to the new format.
If you have stuff in the existing Leopard library you want to keep, things get a bit more complicated.

  • HELP! Newest update broke my iPhoto '11!

iPhoto '11 was working totally fine... and then I installed the new patch. Now it won't even launch.
    Any solutions!?

    Start with the basics:
Did you repair permissions after updating?
Did you try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

Have you recently trashed GarageBand? If so, re-install it. Just the bare app, no need for all the loops.
IF you haven't recently trashed it, then open GarageBand and save anything.
    Then try iPhoto again.

  • IPhoto library DVD won't open after installing iLife '06

Apple Care recently prompted me to erase and reinstall. After doing so, I installed iLife '06. My iPhoto library was backed up to a DVD. How do I now import those photos into my new iPhoto? When I insert the DVD, I get the message "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto - You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto." Now what?

Hey. Thanks for all your help. Got 6.0.4 and was able to import my photos. Had to KEEP the existing library AND create a new library using my backup, then import. Crazy. Yeah!

  • I Have solution to iLife 11 iPhoto FAIL!

I found this solution on another board:
    1. There`s an iPhoto Library file in /Users/~/Pictures . Copy it to another location.
    2. Use iLife disk to reinstall iPhoto.
    3. Put the iPhoto Library file back in the Pictures folder and click on it.
    That`s it.
I did that exactly, & reinstalled iPhoto only.  (Dragged Lib fle to desktop)
When install completed, I clicked (still dmgd looking) iPhoto Icon & I was prompted to go to software update.  Turne out there were 2 updats, bringing me to iPhoto '11 v9.1.5!!!  THATS IT!!!  All my pics are still there!

As you have a Mid 2009 MacBook Pro, your Mac came with DVDs.
To reinstall iPhoto, just insert the Applications Install Disc into your Mac, and install your iLife applications (iWeb, iDVD, iPhoto, GarageBand, iMovie) from there. Then, open  > Software Update to install the most recent version available for them
