ILife 4 - to iLife 6 - Is it worth it?

Running iLife 4 on my iMac @ home and was wondering if it's worth upgrading to iLife 6?
Also, is there a place where I can see comparisons / improved features between the two releases?
Taking someone's word is one thing, but seeing what has changed and whether I use a feature that has seen considerable improvement, is another!!
TIA
jP

Hi james:
If iLife4 is giving you everything you need now and you are not having any issues with it, then why upgrade?
If you are looking for iMovie themes and a few more special effects, then I say go for it. Just a few things to consider:
iLife: System Requirements

iMovie HD 6 requires Quartz Extreme-compatible graphics cards

  • Moving to iLife 08 from iLife 06 - is it worth the investment

I'm a long time imovie/idvd user. Have used imovie 2 - 6. Also have been working with iweb for about the past year. Are the additional features in iweb08 worth it? This is the first time I've seen an apple software product get released with so many less than favorable reviews.
As far as iWeb is concerned, I'm particularly interested in making my website with social networking capabilities so users can log on, interact with each other, post forums etc. Does the new iWeb 08 allow you to do that? thanks for your feedback in advance. my website btw is www.southbaycruisers.com

I have not posted to youtube, but others in this forum have. What I do is post my podcast (usually made by keynote for my students) directly on my blog page and it is very easy to do. I just put one on tonight without any difficulties. I think the new quicktime upgrade may also improve some of that performance.
If you want to see it here is the link to the video. I warn you it is boring grammar stuff but it might give you an idea of what is possible.

  • Does the Mac Mini Server include iLife?

    Hi,
I couldn't find a question to this anywhere...
I'm considering buying a Mac Mini Server soon.
Question - Does the Mac Mini Server include iLife?

When Apple first came out with the Mini with Snow Leopard server, even their sales support people said it came with iLife. (They no longer make that mistake.)
By using the statements of sales support and by referring to the claims on the iLife page (which you quote) -- with some insistence on my part -- I was able to get AppleCare to send me iLife for free. Worth a try. Though frankly, my time would have been better spent just buying the iLife.

  • Final Cut or iLife?

I need some advice. I currently have FCE and iLife 5 and wish to upgrade one of them. I'm interested in iLife 6 becase the Apple site says I can now burn directly to a third party DVD with iLife O6. Is it worth it for me to upgrade to FCE HD (which means upgrading to 10.4) or should I stick with iLife 06?

"..copy it quickly to DVD as an archive.."
Er, there's a difference between copying video footage to a DVD in its original form, as an 'archive', ready for importing & editing afterwards (..but why would you do that, instead of keeping the tape as an 'archive'?..) and burning the video footage as a playable DVD ..which converts it to MPEG-2 format, thereby reducing the quality a bit when you want to later convert it back into editable DV format.
iDVD 6 can automatically make a "Magic DVD" (..just copying the footage to a DVD and automatically adding a menu, etc..) and "..has built-in support for a wide variety of DVD media formats — including DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD+R DL.." so you can also burn higher-capacity dual-layer discs using a suitable burner. And it lets you make 16:9 'widescreen' DVDs, too.
Sounds like you just want to dump footage to a DVD to be able to hand some video around the family: iDVD is ideal for that. FCE HD is really for editing. You seem to want easy distribution. So you probably need iLife '06.

  • Not worth $130! Get iLife '08 instead!

Not worth $130! Get iLife '08 instead! Seriously, what's the point, you get next to nothing for $130. Yeah, time machine is great, but you have to spend another $100 for an external hard-drive. I love Macs, but I am very disappointed with Leopard...

The ranting here is really about how Leopard didn't come with iLife08, and how it didn't update those programs associated with iLife08. Even though it was never stated by Apple or any press releases that Leopard would update those programs. That is why they released iLife08 way before Leopard.

  • Using iPhoto '08 to Access Photos on iPhoto '09

I just bought an external hard drive which now contains all the photos on my MacBook Pro with iPhoto '08 and well as all of those on my wife's MacBook with iPhoto '09. The hard drive is hooked to my wife's MacBook (again, with iPhoto '09). I shared it so I can access it, as well, but when I try to open it, it tells me the version of iPhoto I have isn't up to date and to upgrade to iPhoto '09. I am assuming the only way to do this is to upgrade to the latest version of iLife, which isn't worth it to me because I'd only be viewing these photos every now and then.
Is there another way around this? I'm assuming Apple doesn't make older versions of iPhoto available free of charge at some point? Any other workaround for this?
    Thanks,
    Brian

Each version of iPhoto has a different format - when you open an older library with a newer version you are given a message that the conversion is about to take place and can not be reversed - and it is correct - older versions can not access newer libraries so once a library is converted by opening ti with a newer version only the newer version can access it
And no older versions are not available for free - you may find one on e-bay

  • Where can I find iMovie HD 6.0.3

A student of mine is requesting the older version of iMovie HD v 6. 0.3 I used to be able to find it on Apples website but not anymore. Can anyone help?

You can get iMovie 06 in a number of ways. You cannot download it FROM APPLE any longer (it was free for a time). You can also find iMovie 06 on the iLife 06 install disc. You can buy iLife 06 on Amazon or eBay.
But be prepared to pay about double the cost of iLife 11 (but well worth every penny). Seller's are becoming aware of its value.

  • Can I finish iMovie 06 project in iMovie 08?

I started a major imovie project with my daughter's macbook, but she is off in college and my new macbook that I got last christmas has imovie 08 and I want to finish it. It is about 90 minutes long and I don't want to start over. What are my options?
    thanks. Roy

Installing iMovie 06 on your Mac is BY FAR the best way.

  • DV camcorder to iMovie / iDVD - Why does my DVD look so bad?

I have an SD DV camcorder (a canon opt-40 model which is quite decent for SD)which when I hookup directly to my TV puts out a pretty decent picture.
I have imported the video from this camcorder into iMovie and done the assembly. I then put it through iDVD to burn a DVD. Many hours later I get my 1 hour long DVD and put it into my DVD player and play it and see a significantly degraded poor picture (youtube quality).
Somewhere along the iLife chain I must have lost resolution but I can't seem to find settings to increase the quality or resolution.
What am I missing? What can I set to retain better quaility for my imported video?

Somewhere along the iLife chain I must have lost resolution but I can't seem to find settings to increase the quality or resolution.
    You can't.
    What am I missing?
    iMovie 06.
For faster editing iMovie 09 uses single-field processing. This means every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage.
Your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels, same aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie 09, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08/09 is a "lossless" combination.
You can get iMovie 06 in a number of ways. You cannot download it FROM APPLE any longer. You can also find iMovie 06 on the iLife 06 install disc. You can buy iLife 06 on Amazon or eBay.
But be prepared to pay about double the cost of iLife 09 (but well worth every penny). Seller's are becoming aware of its value.
I use iMovie 06 and iDVD 09 and my DVD's look like they came from Hollywood!
iMovie 09 is a wonderful program assuming that you're using it for what it was designed to do, assemble simple videos to share on the Internet.

  • How can I download imovie HD

I thought that I heard if you own iLife 09, you can download imovie HD for free. Does anybody have that link?
    Thanks

You can get iMovie 06 in a number of ways. You cannot download it FROM APPLE any longer (it was free for a time). You can also find iMovie 06 on the iLife 06 install disc. You can buy iLife 06 on Amazon or eBay.

If you buy the iLife 06 disk, only install iMovie 06 from it. iMovie 06 will not delete anything and it works fine with iDVD 09.

  • VHS edit in iMovie

Wasn't sure where to post this. I'd like to transfer some old home movies that are on VHS to iMovie, BUT I'd also like to be able to edit those movies (add titles, transitions, cuts, etc.). I originally purchased the Elgato Video Capture ($99) not knowing it wouldn't change the format so I could edit the video. I went to the Apple Store today and they recommended the Elgato EyeTV 250 Plus.
Has anyone used this? Will I be able to edit VHS videos in iMovie using this? Thanks in advance for the help!

I have done lots of this.
Let me assume that these movies are important to you and that you want the best quality possible.
I would not use the Elgato EyeTV 250 Plus, it is USB.
All good analog to digital video converters use Firewire. Firewire converters give much higher quality and better results. Look at the Grassvalley ADVC300. Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out.
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source and convert it to FireWire (iMovie 06 will treat it like a camera).
    http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc300
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09.
iMovie 09 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
Your workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, so iMovie 06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. • Best quality import from VHS

I'm importing some VHS tapes into iMovie09 using an ADVC-55 and then MPEGstreamclip to break the project into small clips. However, I'm new to MPEGstreamclip and want to use the best quality settings for the data transfer. Rather than spending many hours trying different strategies, can anyone recommend what settings will, in general, give the best quality?
The tapes, and output DVD, are PAL.
    Thanks for suggestions and tips.

As a new user, what is the best channel for obtaining iMovie 06, given that it's the best method for maintaining quality?
I understand your frustration. Actually, once you get the work flow down, it is pretty easy. I think it's fairly well established that iMovie 06 will give you better quality with DV video to make a DVD.
Obviously, it seems a little complicated to have 2 versions of iMovie. I can't think of any other cases where I have 2 versions of the same program. However, in the case of iMovie, iMovie 06 and iMovie 09 are vastly different.
I use both of these iMovies on a regular basis. But on the project that you are describing, I would definitely use iMovie 06 for better quality. Someday, when you're dealing with high definition and are sharing these videos on the internet, you may find iMovie 09 to your liking.
I found iMovie 06 to be very intuitive and easy to learn. My video editing goes back to the film days, so I find iMovie 06 quite natural to me.
If you buy the iLife 06 disk, only install iMovie 06 from it. iMovie 06 will not delete anything and it works fine with iDVD 09.
Basically, connect your camera and import into iMovie 06, then share to iDVD 09. Do a 5 or 10 minute project first to establish your work flow. Do this a few times and you can zip along thru the remaining work.
You can get iMovie 06 in a number of ways. You cannot download it FROM APPLE any longer (it was free for a time). You can also find iMovie 06 on the iLife 06 install disc. You can buy iLife 06 on Amazon or eBay.

  • Nice and fast, but overall unstable. Anybody else?

    Summary iPhoto 6 issues:
    - Frequently (one in every 10 or so uses) tells me to rebuild the thumbs which takes a LONG time with 4000+ photos - How come?
    - 3 total fatal crashes since install; Had to start the library over from scratch each time as the library db was corrupted (but ok when I started a new library and imported the pictures back, except I lost my rolls, comments, ratings, albums, etc. each time)
    - Some pictures occasionally (seemingly randomly) come up as dotted lines, but are ok when I look at them in edit view; eventually fixed but not sure how
    - Two of my pictures come up black, but look ok when in edit view; eventually fixed but not sure how
I've got the latest hardware, software, updates, rebuilt a vanilla install from a zeroed disk with a single user, repaired permissions, run disk utilities, blah, blah, blah... Overall I've spent more than 50 hours on iPhoto 6 problems, but they don't go away.

Thank goodness for iLife 08'. Was worth the wait.

  • Purchase iMovie 6 - where?

Long story short, I have iLife 08 but can't install iMovie 08.
I know that iMovie 06 will give me what I need, so I would like to install it but don't know where to get it.
I'm throwing this out there in case anyone has any ideas where I could look (no longer available from Apple)
    thanks.

  • How do I get iMovie HD 06 again?

Some time ago, I was asking in this forum how to downgrade my iMovie 08 to the previous version and I got a link with a downloadble version of iMovie HD 06. Can somebody help me?

I use both iMovie 09 and iMovie 06 (iMovie 06 about 80%). But when I need better quality I use iMovie 06.
Google is good for finding things on the Web.
Many users want iMovie 6.0.4 also, but you can not download it FROM APPLE.
If you want to have both iMovie 06 and iLife 08/09 (and most do) just install iMovie 06 first, then iLife 09. You are now UN-STOPPABLE!
You can find iMovie 06 on the iLife 06 install disc. You can buy iLife 06 on Amazon or eBay.
But be prepared to pay about double the cost of iLife 09 (but well worth every penny). Seller's are becoming aware of its value.
