Ilife backup file type?

When i use the backup for ilife, it writes the files to some strange file type. does this mean that in twenty years when i try to look at my photos that i will have to have ilife software to open the files? if that is the case then that is fairly poor planning i would think. who the heck knows what will be around in 20 years? what is the deal with this file type?
thanks in advance

Okay, that is the dotMac Back Up Utility.
What this does is as follows:
First time you run it on, say iPhoto, it back up the entire library. Takes a while and a lot of discs.
Second time you run it, it compares what's been backed up against any changes since, and backs up the changes. So this second (and subsequent runs) are faster.
But you need to keep all the disks.
To restore you need to disks and the Back Up application. You need the app because it has all the details of what goes where (and when) from all the disks.
These disks are not readable on a Windows box, nor should the be. The iLife apps don't run on Windows.
There are many apps that work back ups this way, it's not unusual to need the application to restore things.
See that "large individual file", right click on it and select 'Show Package Contents'. See all your files in there?
There are apps that work differently. For instance, DejaVu will back up your files in a way that the Finder can easily read - it looks like the Finder's own layout. There are lots of other possibilities - search on MacUpdate.
Remember, backing up is a rolling ongoing process, not an event. It's designed to recover your system in the event of a failure.
If you're thinking of putting files on a disc and putting them away for 20 years, that's an event: and doing so is Archiving.

    Hi Marcus,
    we use the version 5.5.
The pipe name is generated by the Data Protector. When I want to create manually a pipe with this name I got the message "No hit found".
Do you know a  possibilty where we can configure (at Data Protector or MaxDB) which medium name should be used for creating the pipe?
    Thanks a lot!

  • Backup file with vhd file type

I have a backup file with a vhd file type.   Other files are xml document.  I wish to recover the original files.  what do I do?

    Hello wasteh2o,
Do you use the system image back up to create the VHD?
What file do you want to restore?
If you want to restore system file and settings, you could use system image backup. For more information, please take a look at the following article.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-hk/windows/restore-computer-from-system-image-backup#1TC=windows-7
Additionally, please check if you can restore the file to previous version.

  • How do I specify file types to "not" backup

I would like to not backup movie and TV shows as they are large and will eventually push the stuff I want backed up off of the drive due to the last on–last off policy.
    Any thoughts?

I don't think there's any way to specify file types you don't want to back up, but, as SacMac said, you can exclude specific files and folders in the TM preference pane:
>System Preferences...>Time Machine>Options>+, then navigate to what you want to exclude, and click "exclude".
    Good luck!

  • CD albums in iTunes (12.1.2.27) won't load to iPad - gets file type not supported message

I just updated to iTunes 12.1.2.27 and synced to my iPad, but all of my CD albums that are in iTunes on a mac-mini (Yosemite 10.10.3)  won't sync now. A sample message is:
"song title" was not copied because the file type is not supported by the iPad "my iPad name"
There where a hundred songs on the list. My iPad is on IOS 8.3. I have never had this problem before. Songs purchased from iTunes store are there, but not my own CDs.
Has anyone seen this problem before? What is the solution?
    Rolf

Problem solved! Apparently way back in November of last year I made a copy of the iTunes library on my time machine backup disk manually. I just created the folder on the drive. This was because I was updating the system and did not trust anything to work properly afterwards. The iTunes folder was sitting on that drive and  iTunes (for reasons I don't understand) started using parts of it. I noticed this when I tried to play one of the songs from my CD albums. The backup disk would mount and spin up and play the song from there.
By the way the iTunes preferences were set to look at the iTunes library on my mac-mini system disk not the backup drive. Why it went to that backup drive I will never know. Anyway I renamed the iTunes folder to something else on the backup drive. Now when I play a song from an album it goes to the proper iTunes library (the one on my mac-mini disk). Subsequent to this fix a sync to the iPad copied my albums  properly with no error.

  • Restore to factory, failed backups, files can't be found etc etc - Win7?

    Multiple probs...
have got to the point that wondering if there is an iTunes/Win7 issue...
    Apple product: iPhone 3Gs 32GB*
    Computer OS: Win7
+* NB: Throughout all of these issues iTunes repeatedly showed capacity as only 4GB, then at some point would switch to partially showing correct capacity (ie. had diff information between.. capacity shown in summary details, and that shown in used/free space status bar), OR would switch to fully showing correct capacity info (ie. summary details and used/free status bar info would agree).+
    *ISSUE 1*
Orig issue - stopped being able to add music/video. Error message something like found folder where expected file.
    *ISSUE 2*
Backed up iPhone (backup appeared successful.
Restored phone to factory settings (appeared successful)
Tried to restore backup > iTunes error message "iTunes could not... because the backup session failed" *NB: Searched computer, found the location that iTunes saves backup, files ARE there, and checked all photos and contacts are there (just in format that will need to translate if need to access via non-iTunes means)*
    *ISSUE 3*
(Considered that might have been something wrong with my orig files, I decided to test with newly reset iPhone.)
Set up as new phone (as no choice).
Set up new music and added to phone (appeared successful; music visible on phone).
Repeated with more music; then started to get error message (for tracks that had orig been added successfully "The iPhone cannot be synced. The required file could not be found"
    *ISSUE 4*
Tried to reset again to factory.
Had to use the Hard Reset method (simultaneously hold power button & home button, til slide bar for power off. Powered off. With iTunes running, hold down home button as plug into computer. iTunes recognises, asks if wish to reset device. Say yes, proceed through entire process, including entering simcard lock code, looks successful. Phone then has the "connect to iTunes"image.
Did this repeatedly without success (always returned to be frozen on the connect to iTunes image. Tried all sorts of combinations - unplugging, rebooting pc, nothing worked... once phone got to this point every time it was plugged in iTunes froze, as soon as unplugged iTunes fully functional. Considered that iTunes might be processing slowly, so searched again... found webpage said to "Keep your device connected until the Connect to iTunes screen goes away or you see iPhone is activated." ref http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
So repeated factory restore, and at end left phone connected overnight and still no change (still displaying connect to iTunes image). In morning, still no progress (still showing connect to iTunes image).
    *ISSUE 5*
Happened to unplug phone, and replug into computer (not holding down home button or anything). iTunes then finally recognised phone. However, when tried to restore backup repeatedly still get error message "iTunes could not... because the backup session failed"
So unless set up as new phone again, am stuck.
    Back to ISSUE 2/3 status.
Expect that if go ahead with setting up as new phone again, will not be able to backup phone successfully, and at some stage will stop being able to add music etc.
    *ISSUE 6*
Have tried to go ahead with setting up new phone. Still no success.
Multiple error messages, most recent being
"The iPhone X cannot be synced. A folder was specified instead of a file."
Are there known problems with Windows 7? Or is this apple software issue? Apple hardware?<</div>
At this stage I no longer have a phone (it my phone for everywhere), or sanity buster for 15-20 hours/week commuting. Not particularly comfortable with that...

    Hi, thanks for your feedback.
No. None of music in iTunes synced. By "none of them showing probs"... Meant that iTunes can see all of those files, so no prob of that type; HOWEVER those files cannot be synced to iPhone. This is current status. Previously files HAD synced to iPhone.
Ie one of first things that did was to reset all to ensure that working with only small test sample to minimize room for corrupted files.
So situation is phone reset to factory; newly installed iTunes on new laptop, with new iPhone profile. In iTunes only small number of music files, that I've newly added to reduce chance that those files corrupted.
From all that reading, and from discussions having with few fellow developers/analysts at work, thoughts are that iTunes not playing nice with 62bit Win7.
Does anyone have contact with apple to have confirmed?
There are number threads even just in this forum, reflecting same thoughts
    Cheers

  • Certain files have disappeared from my computer, certain file types remain, and the folders remain. What happened to the files, any way to get them back?

    First I'll give my specs:
    MacBook Pro mid-2009
    Memory: 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
    Software: OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
This evening I woke my computer up and the first thing I noticed was the background image had changed.
Then navigating through my folders, all files have been removed except for *some" of the following file types:
Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, CeltX, Final Draft, InDesign.
Files I know were there this morning and are no longer there are: PDF, MOV, TXT, and others.
When I "get info" on one of the folders that used to be populated with files, the first file size that shows is the original (i.e. 2.3 gigs) but it quickly updates to the new size of an empty folder (6 mb).
I have checked to make sure I am still logged in as the correct user, I have reset the PRAM, I have reindexed finder, I have verified and repaired the disk and verified disk permissions. I have used Terminal to show all hidden files, and none of these things have helped.
No, I do not have a backup that I can restore from. Yes, I know it is stupid.
Any insight or suggestions are welcome.
    Thank you!

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Deleting time machine backup files from old time machine disk

I have an external USB HD that USED to be my Time Machine backup disk. I have replaced it with a newer FW HD and use the old one for archiving files, disk images, etc. The old disk still had 100gigs of backup files on it from time machine. To free up space, I thought I'd drag a few months of backups off the old dick into the trash. This worked. But I can't empty the trash. When I go to put the backup folders BACk on the USB disk, I get an error. So they are stuck in the trash.
    Any help? Thanks.

I have always understood that there is no need to delete backup files from Time Machine.   Once it reaches 'full' it begins to delete them sequentially of its own accord.

  • Can't recover backup files off of external hard drive. HELP!!! :(

Recently I had to restore my laptop to its factory settings. Before doing this I made a backup on my "2TB WD My Book Essential External Hard Drive", using a suggested back up program simply titled "Back Up Files". The file it made on it is called "MINWINPC" and it has 2 folders in it that are titled "backup Files 2011-12-08-042146" and "Backup Files 2011-12-08-051659". The second one is the only one with anything in it an application titled "Backup.1.exe".
here are the details of "Backup.1.exe":
    File description: RestoreWiz Application
    Type: Application
    File version: 8.0.92.0
    Product name: RestorWiz
    Product version: 8.0.92.0
Copyright: Solft Thinks Copyright (C) 2008
    Size: 2.93 MB
    Date modified: 12/8/2011 5:17AM
WhenIi click on the "Backup.1" application it opens up recovery manager. It asks me what files I want to restore and where I want to restore my backup.
I choose OS( C: ). It then tells me the location my files will be restored to, C:\System Recovery files.
Then it starts scanning for files to restore. This lasts a minute or 2 before an error message pops up.
    "Runtime error! program: G:\MINWINPC\backup.1.exe
This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual .
Please contact the application's support team for more information."
I click ok to have another message from Microsoft windows pop up that says
"RestoreWiz Application has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? I would really like to get my backed up files back onto my computer

  • How to repair a TimeMachine Backup file

I'm trying to use Migration Assistant to copy data and user info to a new MacBook Pro (10.9.4).  I created a fresh Time Machine backup file of the source iMac on a USB drive connected to my Airport Extreme.  Unfortunately, MA says 'No Volumes Found' in the Time Machine backup file when I try to move the data to the new MacBook Pro.
So now, I'm trying to attach the Time Machine backup file to attempt to manually repair with the fsck_hfs.  I've mounted the backup hard drive to my Mac - the drive is called 'Apple Network HD'.  The Time Machine back file is called 'Upstairs iMac'.  The Info detail for the file is shown below.
I type the following in Terminal root:
hdiutil attach -nomount -noverify -noautofsck /Volumes/Apple-Network-HD/Upstairs-iMac.sparsebundle
    The following is returned:
hdiutil: attach failed - No such file or directory
I am new to terminal commands but I can not figure out why I am unable to point hdiutil to the correct file.  Any help would be appreciated?  Thanks.

They have a number of support articles on problems with Mavericks

  • Change file type classification? mkv as "Movie"

In short, I would like to make mkv files show up under the class of "Movie" in smart folders and such. I'm assuming that buried in some setting or file there is a list of extensions I can add "mkv" to. I would have thought this was a common question but so far forum trawling has got me nowhere. Can anyone shed some light? The reason, if you care to read is below, but it doesn't have that much bearing on the question.
I have a sizeable DVD collection, I also have a new job that puts me in hotels 5 weeks out of 6 for training. I don't want to carry them around as they'll get damaged and broken. Last week I left my MacPro chobbling away at encodes and now my entire DVD collection resides on a NAS as well as my shelves. I've created a simple automator finder service that will copy the selected files to a "Films" folder within the Movies folder that I've removed from the time machine backup so as not to waste space. This is set to only show up if the selected items are "Movies". As a consequence, it doens't appear for mkv's.
I know I can just alter the service to be there permanantly which is what I'll do for now, but it's not a very elegant solution.

I was able to change the extension in Windows, which then changed the file type. I'm still curious as to how to make the change directly on my MAC.

  • .bbb file type

A .bbb file type is used to back up my 8820 files.    I have Windows 7 operating system on my PC  which does not recognize this file type.  How do I open the back up files?

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
BB backup files (either BBB or IPD) are proprietary, intended solely as the source of restore to a BB device via the Desktop Software...no other function is native to them.
However, there are 3rd party PC apps that have been known to parse and present the files in a usable format. A few seconds with Google and I'm sure you'll find something useful.
    Good luck!
