ILife for the classroom

Hi all,
I'm not real sure which discussion area to post this in, so iMovie is the lucky winner
I'm a 4th grade teacher with hopes of using iLife in the classroom. I'm also a musician. What I am NOT is a fluent tech person. I'd like to purchase a camcorder of some sort that will work with my MacBook Pro w/Intel and with iMovie/iDVD. I don't know what the difference is between the two, but a Geek friend said that the camcorder should be compatible with both. Any suggestions?
Also, I have a Roland EM-2000 MIDI keyboard that I'd like to hook up to the laptop and use via the GB. I'd to make some audio books for my listening center. I figured if I could do this with GB, burn the CD, and then I could play it in the boom box for the students. I was told I'd need a MIDI to USB Interface converter w/cables. Someone mentioned M-Audio.
Any help you could give would be most appreciative.

  • Have to pay for iLife for the 2nd time!?

I've got iLife apps on my mac mini mid 2011. I wanted to install them on my mb air mid 2013, but for some reason iPhoto and iMovie aren't free, except GarageBand - this app is free. I've already bought iLife apps from one Apple ID on my mac mini and the same ID I use now on my mb air. Do I have to pay for iPhoto again?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your MacBook Air should come with those applications for free. On your MacBook Air, open the Mac App Store, log in with the Apple ID you used to set it up, go to Purchases and accept iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, Pages, Keynote and Numbers.
If you do not see any application to accept, see > http://www.apple.com/creativity-apps/mac/up-to-date/

  • Help! Purchasing new computers for music classroom!

Hi - I need to submit a budget request ASAP (or the money goes elsewhere!) for some new computers for my high school music classroom. We currently have G4 eMacs that have stopped working well due to a lack of software upgrade support from our school board (the Toronto District School Board, Toronto, ON Canada).
What suggestions does anyone have regarding cost-effective units for the classroom (ideally would like 5-6), along with software suggestions (what comes standard, what would we have to add, and at what cost) for use with midi (we have one midi-keyboard) and Finale music notation software, as well as Garageband. Also would like the capability to record student performances and playback to allow them to receive immediate feedback on their progress. Oh, and CD/DVD burning would be beneficial.
Any help you can provide is MUCH appreciated!

If you stick with the iMac or MacBook/MacBook Pro product lines you will receive the basic hardware (computer, built-in display, keyboard, mouse or trackpad, operating system, basic applications) with the system. If you have specific music software/hardware that you need then I agree with Tanya3300 that you should give Apple a call.
Apple does offer some midi hardware. Here's a link:

Garageband comes with each system an it may provide you with the recording and reviewing tools that you need.

My kids music teacher *7th-8th grade) used an excellent software package from makemusic.com to assign homework. The kids would play the assigned pieces on their instruments at home in front of their computer or using the Mac systems at school. The software would automtically grade and provide feedback regarding rhythym, note accuracy, etc., then send the sound file to the teacher for final review and grading so that she could provide feedback to each student. It worked really well.

  • I need the appearance color for the interface to be even lighter (white)

    Hi.
I teach After Effects and Premiere Pro here in Chile, both awesome softwares, and when I use a projector the dark grey interface is not easy to read, so I always change it to white, just for the classroom. And I also use and app called mouseposé for mac to show the mouse. But with the 2014.1.1 release all I get is a washed out grey as the lightest color, not very good for a projector or for mouseposé. Is there a possibility for the next update to have the white interface appearance back? with black text? I will appreciate it a lot, and also my students will appreciate it. I makes a big difference in the classroom. The same issue is happening in Premiere Pro.
Thanks a lot for considering this issue.

Any current model if Mac, which will have Garageband included, will do the job.

  • Textbooks for the iBookstore US and UK?

In the UK the Bookstore has 'paid' and 'free' books but a category for 'Textbooks' is not yet available.
I have read online about the Bookstore US and how it has some textbooks for sale but I cannot access this site. I am interested to know about for example the range of textbooks and if any reviews are available to read. I would be most pleased to read these online via any links anyone can supply!
I am also interested in how schools are viewing these textbooks and how sales are going.
It also seems that schools can 'bulk buy' and get reductions but again the material I have to read is sketchy. Is this only for big publishing houses?
I would be pleased to hear about how schools view the price of such textbooks in the US, as eventually I will need to fix a price for my own ITextbook.
Meanwhile I am plodding on !!!!!!!!!!
    Ken

    >so how well recieved are textbooks at universites in the US?
Everyone would love to know, but it's still early and as is normal w/Apple, details are held close to the vest.
    >Are less known authors trying to break into this market?
I think that's kind of a loaded question, as it seems 'lesser known' means just coming in, and that means lack of experience...more like stars in the eyes rather than a focused goal, etc. Who knows what attracts LKAs, after all.
Some of the way all this happens is that Apple puts a shine on something new, and then makes adjustments based on. This isn't simply a 'build it and they will come' scenario. More like chicken and egg, I think.
Those digital books need devices before they can be consumed, and that's what drives Apple...but they can't sell into schools without content....but authors won't push content out without a ready market...sooooo...Apple is patient while authors have to decide for themselves which path holds promise for them.
My books could easily be repurposed for the classroom, but for now, I sell into as many countries as possible and target the individual. I'll watch for other channels, and if it looks like I can take advantage of releasing a text book, I'll do it. I'm already selling apps in bulk to edu, so I'm participating and monitoring at the same time on different levels.

  • What accessories are needed to connect my Apple TV to my LCD projector (VGA connectors) in the classroom so that I can mirror my iPad for around the class teaching?

I have been wanting to project my iPad to my class and the only way I have found is to use the connector. However, I would like to remove myself from in front of the classroom and move around the classroom. This encourages students to take notes and not pass notes. This also encourages them to engage in questioning of the lesson, because the teacher is not far removed from them if they're in the back of the classroom. How can I connect? I've read some forums that discuss converters and many who say it needs to be active or powered, but some of these powered converters are nearly two times the amount of the Apple TV. I wouldn't mind paying if this is the suggested way and it works. I don't want to go through several failed and expensive experiments.

There are hardware converters that will convert HDMI to various other types of output, however there are some issues with doing so that you should be aware of.
    HDCP
HDCP compliant converters will not allow you to watch HDCP protected content such as that from the iTunes Store. Non compliant converters exist but we cannot discuss them under the Terms of Use for these communities.
    Resolution and aspect ratio
I'm not aware of any converters that will scale the output from the Apple TV, any TV or projector which is used will need to be widescreen and support resolutions of 720p (if you are using the Apple TV 2)

  • I am a teacher that uses the iPad in the classroom.  I have an itunes account setup for my classroom without a credit card listed. Is there anyway for me to purchase apps to use in the classroom with a Purchase Order?

I am a teacher that uses the iPad in the classroom.  I have an itunes account setup for my classroom without a credit card listed. Is there anyway for me to purchase apps to use in the classroom with a Purchase Order?

(Being sarcastic - its because only the US is big or important enough to warrant volume licensing....)
At this time, until Apple decides to release volume licensing structures outside of the US the only solution would be to use your purchase orders with a company that sells the iTunes Vouchers and redeem those.
However - even then its hard to stay on the right side of the EULA when the terms are all couched in reference to "Personal Use"
I have spoken to some developers in the past about educational discounts, or even support for proxies, and wasn't really impressed with their answers.   But hey - even Adobe has trouble with proxies and consistent approaches - we can't expect independent developers to be able to match the same capabilities...

I have an iLife 11 disc that doesn't work very well so I tried creating a disk image of it with Disk Utility.  It took two tries but finally got a disk image that I could use to install the iLife 11 applications. Give it a try.

WOW! I am impressed with the website, varkgirl! I am also a Florida teacher, and being new to the Mac world, I'm still trying to learn about iLife. Our computer lab has iLife on their Macs, but we've just recently gotten SOME of the classrooms' computers (iMacs) updated to OS X. Before we were on OS 9. I don't have iLife yet on my classroom computers. I do have iLife on my personal laptop that also doubles as my school computer, but I'm not sure of all the bells and whistles yet. Your web pages are definitely worth booking for any serious Mac classroom teacher.

  • Is there a way of connecting the ipad to the smart board in the classroom, so that the smartboard is the control, and the ipad is displaying what is on the smartboard? This is to help a visually impaired child see what is on the smartboard.,

Is there a way of connecting the ipad to the smart board in the classroom, so that the smartboard is the control, and the ipad is displaying what is on the smartboard? This is to help a visually impaired child see what is on the smartboard.

    Absolutely!
Install Splashtop2 on the PC and enable it to be controlled or ran from iPad or Reflection to simply allow iPad to serve as PC unwired monitor. With Splashtop and an Apple TV connected, you use the smartboard as usual, yet the PC and iPad can see the same content. The impaired child can even interact with the Smart Board via the iPad as if he were writing directly on the big screen. Erasing functions can be done by touching the Smart Board manual controls. Several variables are in play that cause this lack of functionality:
Apple won't permit PC software that infringes its proprietary apps.
Smart Board companies refuse to develop iPad apps because they feel threatened and are being replaced by iPads
School districts think Apple TV is meant for copyright infringement and could expose them to safe harbor lawsuits
Network administrators make it impossible to login Apple TVs because they don't want the streaming occurring
Classrooms are not able to keep up with the technology of using the iPad
Clicker companies refuse to play with iPad because they see it as a potential threat to their core business clients
Apple is not working as hard as it could to exploit its capabilities in education, thus losing money in iPad sales
The bottom line is that we educators and technology developers are hurting our childern with petty conflicts.

  • Using iTunes and the iPad in the classroom

One of the schools that I support in our school district recently purchased two iPads.  We need to establish iTunes accounts that do not have a payment method associated with them.  We have setup the devices and are looking forward to downloading FREE apps from the iTunes store.  We have attempted to create our Apple ID in two different manners:
    1.  Go directly to iTunes on the iPad and select a free app.  Click download.  Prompted to setup an account.  Was not presented with the "none" option for payment.
    2.  Went directly into the iPad settings to "iTunes and App Store."  Again, no "none" option for payment.
Our department does not have access to a credit card nor a gift card due to funding.  I would appreciate any help that the iTunes department can provide to me about how to properly setup these iPads so that our students can utilize them in the classroom.
    Regards,
    Matt
