Ilife? FrontRow???

Perhaps an obvious question, but I'm a recent switcher....
When I got my new Mac Book the only discs it came with were the two install/restore dvds. Is ilife on one of these, or am I missing the disc for that? (No need for it at the moment, but I want back-up.)
Secondly, FrontRow isn't currently installed. When I clicked on the icon the setup/install program started, but installation failed. What disc do I need in my computer to make it install?

All your pre-installed bundled software is contained on those discs. Disc 1 contains OS X and clickable aliases for installing Optional Installs (like Front Row and X11) or restoring bundled software (Install Bundled Software.)
Front Row is normally pre-installed. Simply use the remote that came with the computer to activate it (Front Row is not a clickable application.) Your User Guide should provide information (you did read it?)

I have a g5 imac which I bought just before the versions with the built in isight. I do however have an isight plugged in - can I use frontrow / apple remote?

If you searc the internet, there are many websites that tell you how to get it on to a "non-compatible machine", and since you have an iSight camera, you should also be able to get photobooth. I have a Powerbook with Front row on it, it is stable and runs fine.
What we really need though is for Apple to release it as part of iLife so we don't have to go around tweaking apps to make them work!

Frontrow and photo library

Before I installed iLife 06 and was running iLife 05, I was able to play music using frontrow and then go to photos in frontrow and select library. The music continued so that I could play whatever music and have my complete iLife library running as a slideshow in random order.
This does not appear to be possible in iLife 06 under frontrow. Whenever I try to do this the music stops immedietley as I select library, and preordained music takes its place.
I hope I am making myself clear.
In summary I can no longer select my iPhoto library and choose the music to listen to at the same time whilst running Frontrow.

The music is set in iphoto.
click slideshow, then the music icon, uncheck play music during slideshow, that should do it.

Frontrow left running @ 100% after returning to Desktop - bugfix required

Tonight my wife and I were watching iTunes TV Show Videos on our living room TV using her black Macbook with lid closed for about 4-1/2 hrs. I had downloaded these TV videos with iTunes on my PowerMac G5 and shared them to the Macbook. The Macbook was connected to the TV using the Mini DVI to video adapter and a sound connection from headphone jack on Macbook to the TV sound L/R inputs. The Magsafe power was connected all the time. The TV videos played just fine and we paused the Front Row periodically.
When we were done watching the videos I powered off the TV and disconnected the Mini DVI and the sound connections and removed the Magsafe power. I the opened the Macbook lid and the fans started to pick up and make a fair amount of noise.
I launched Terminal.app and launched top to see what was running and found Frontrow was running at around 100% cpu with its resident memory growing at an alarming rate. I watched this for about 5 mins and Frontrow climbed to just over 500 MB with the cpu use still at around 100% all this time.
I used the remote to see if I could get the attention of the Frontrow process that was using 100% cpu and memory bloating but to no avail. The rcd (remote control daemon) process did launch when pressing the remote's Menu button but it did nothing.
I then decided enough was enough and I quit the top display and issued a 'kill 508' where 508 was the Frontrow PID. Frontrow was killed and when using the Remote the Frontrow restarted as it should.
Thought I should post this Frontrow anomaly in case others may be wondering why their Frontrow doesn't quit as it should when returning to the Desktop mode.
I will also send feedback to Apple about this mis-behaving Frontrow.
Anyone else experience this Frontrow behaviour ?

I forgot to mention a couple of things.
The communication for sharing the iTunes TV Videos between the PowerMac G5 and the Macbook was via Airport Express which was located some 25 feet away from the MacBook and the signal strength was at max.
I was also running 10.4.7 on both the PowerMac G5 and the Macbook.
The Macbook is equipped with 2gig RAM also.
No other Apps were running with Frontrow on the Macbook other than iTunes for accessing the PowerMac's shared iTune's Video files.
There was one moment during watching the videos on the TV when sharing stopped. This was because the PowerMac was set to sleep via Energy Saver at 1 hour of zero activity. THis was resolved by waking the PowerMac G5 up and configuring it to never sleep.

ILife '08, LP8, FCS 2 - issues & what is new in GB 08?

I have iLife 06 on my Mac along with LP8 and FCS 2. Would like to know:
1. What is the difference between GB 3 and GB 08?
2. Will installing iLife 08 mess up LP8 and/or FCS 2 samples?

Hard drive issues related to a recent install of iLife 2005

SOS!
I have a G3 iBook (18G internal memory) that I use with a LaCie 250GB FireWire external drive.
Since I have so many Gigs of music, pics, etc. I've removed all my personal files off the startup disk and have them stored on the external drive leaving only operating system and applications on the start up disk.
So...I just purchased iLife so that I could use the upgraded iPhoto. In the process of trying to install iPhoto I was told I didn't have enough room on the start up disk to load the application. So, I went through my hard drive and deleted a few unnecessary applications (like games, NOT anything essential to run the OS) and moved every byte of personal files to the external drive. In the process I was able to remove only enough to make about 1.7G available left on the HD. The iPhoto upgrade did install successfully.
So, now I have the upgraded iPhoto but I've got two issues, the second one seems to be directly linked to this install.
1 - I can not figure out what is taking up so much room on my startup disk. I don't have any large applications except the Apple applications and MS Office X -- no other games, database software -- I even moved my copies Illustrator and Photoshop onto the external drive. I am concerned that having so little space left on my startup disk is going to cause problems through I can't figure out what else to delete. Is there a software I can run to uncover any hidden files?
2 - Since this install my MS Word will not open documents. It simply freezes up. All the other apps in the Office X suite work fine --- MS Word is the only app effected.
These are perplexing issues -- any help in diagnosing what is going on and/or what I should do next would be greatly appreciated.

The trash file is a good suggestion --- I did delete pictures from iPhoto but perhaps didn't purge them from the Trash so there is a "copy" still in the trash. I'll give that a try tonight and if correct will change this question to answered.
Otherwise, yes, I moved files/apps then trashed the main copy.

How can I uninstall ilife 06 and go back to ilife 05?

At least for idvd, it is such a pain. I need to get a project burned to dvd, and even though the sound files are playing in idvd and they are in the file, the sound files do not play when the dvd is burned.
I've wasted too many DVD's and too much time trying to figure out what the problem is.
Tried to install idvd 5 from the ilife 05 disk. It goes through the motions but didn't do anything.
What files need to be deleted first?

Are you really still running OS 10.3.8 as shown in your profile?
My Panther machine is at 10.3.9.
I'm only trying to run the iLife '06 applications on my Tiger machine with 10.4.4
BTW, the iLife '06 box says "v10.3.9 or v10.4.3 or later. v10.4.4 recommended"
If you really are still at 10.3.8, that might account for your problems.

I am unable to import new photos in iPhoto 11. Perhaps I should just reinstall from iLife disk? Will it affect my photos in any way?

I have iPhoto 11 installed on my MacBook. I am now unable to import new photos using USB or by plugging the camera directly into the laptop. Never had that probem before with this camera. Perhaps just reinstall iPhoto from the iLife disk?

Okay I will try reformating the camera's card. However all is well when I export photos to my iMac at home or onto my iPad.
If your suggestion does not work should I try reinstalling iPhoto from the iLife disk? If so, how do I go about doing that or is there a website somewhere explaining this?

Assuming you don't have a Time Machine backup before you lent your MacBook out, then you've a few choices.
If you want to set it back to the day you got it, then if it's Snow Leopard, use the micro USB stick that came with your Mac and after boot from it ( hold the Option key on startup) select the USB stick and when booted from it, go to Disk Utility and reformat the HD then install SL. when it's done and started in 10.6, select the install Applications from the USB stick, then your back with iLife apps etc.
If Lion, restart from the Recovery Partition as per the instructions above except you don't need anything plugged into the Mac, select Recovery and again DU erase and install Lion. once Lion is installed the iLife apps will be available to download from the App store as your MacBook will be recognised as coming with these apps.
WARNING, both these methods remove ALL user data

I-photo in ilife 08 unexpectedly quits - os 10.4.10 does not quit

Background:
I have successfully assembled 4 books, simple, 20 page iphoto 08 books and saved to iphoto then to iweb.
Yet when assembling a ibook at page 35, I went into creative mode,
double clicked on image, made adjustments and the computer went into a 1 hour loop. I finally cut off computer. I can turn on computer, load iphoto, appears to work, when attempting to open the book the application "unexpectedly quits"
I cannot get the 35 page book to open,I have uploaded the software updates, reinstalled i-life 08, to the extent you can with the disk.
QUESTION...
While waiting for apple developers to figure out the patch, how can I take the 480 images from iphoto 08 copy to a flash drive and assemble a book on one of my other computers running the stable iphoto 06.
Or is there a fix for Iphoto 08?

There are a couple of possible fixes here.
1 - do you have any text fields that are unused? If so just put a space in it and try again.
2 - others have reported it was the editing of the file while in the book mode that would cause the crashing. Their solution was to do the editing in the main Library and not while in the book mode. You may have to remove that photo from the book, edit it and then add back.
See if either of those will help.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Software Update Fails to Install iLife 09 Updates...

I have a Macbook with all the most recent updates installed, and computer otherwise running smoothly.
I had purchased iLife 11 (and since gave it away to a friend) but was very disappointed with the upgrade, and for various reasons decided to go back to the original iLife 09 that my computer came with.
I had already successfully made the downgrade on my Macbook Pro, by deleting the apps, all its related preference files etc I found by searching my computer. When I went to do the same on my Macbook, I was also able to delete and reinstall iLife 09 without a hitch, but when I got to the point where I ran Software Update is where I ran into some issues...
Software Update recognizes that I have iLife 09 installed, and tells me there are updates to iDVD, iWeb, iMovie and iPhoto totalling some 272MB. Everything downloads fine, starts to install but hangs for a few minutes on "Validating Packages" and soon after I get an error message that "None of the updates were installed" citing an "Unexpected Error". What gives?
I have tried the update a few times, after restarts, fixing permissions from Disk Utility, and searched the web for an answer, and come up empty...
Any help in getting this issue resolved would be appreciated. Thanks!

Start by bypassing Software update and downloading the updates directly from Apple Support;

Software update and iLife help not working in Admin account

For the last few weeks (maybe since iLife 11 was installed) software update and iLife help has quit working on the single administration account on my iMac. All works fine on the secondary accounts.
If I try to use software update it says everything is up to date, even though I know there are updates available that can be seen if checking from a different account on the machine. In iLife, if I try to access the help files it tells me I need to download them. I click to download and after a few seconds it takes me back to the front help page and I then go through the entire process again but the help download never happens. On secondary accounts the help files work no problem.
I've tried many of the tips for deleting helpfile plists, but nothing seems to work for me.
Can any kind person list for me everything I should look to delete or move in the account to get these things working again?

Since the issue is specific to your original user account, you can proceed in two ways. One is to log into your new account, make a list of the preference files (plists) located in /username/Library/Preferences/, including any in the ByHost subfolder, log back into the original account, move everything on that other account's list from the original account's Preferences folder into a newly created folder on the Desktop, log out and back in, and see if the problem goes away. If so, you can copy the ones in the Desktop folder (one at time) back into /Preferences/, restart, and see if the problem returns. If so, you've identified the corrupt/conflicting one. Continue with all of them until isolating the bad ones. That'll save you the trouble of resetting preferences.
The second way is much more detailed and I'll not burden you with the steps unless the above doesn't fix the issue.

I just got the mid 2011 macbook air and it does not have ilife or iPhoto on it...isnt it supposed to come with it? and if it does then how do i get it on the mac without having to pay for it in the app store?

ILife 08 Audio Loops Don't Work In The Browser Of Soundtrack 1.5 ?

Yes, I know this is the FCE forum but I also know a lot of you use Soundtrack !
This had me puzzled for nearly an hour until I spotted what was "wrong".
The iLife 08 audio loops are .caf files, not .aif.
They DO NOT play in the Browser of Soundtrack 1.5 but they DO play when they are dragged into the Timeline. So it means they can't be previewed.
Now here is the queer thing ....... they play perfectly in the Browser of Soundtrack Pro 2.0.
So is there any way of making the Soundtrack 1.5 Browser play .caf audio or is it just not compatible? .............. It's strange that they are OK in the Project Timeline.

It appears Amadeus Pro will let you convert the .caf files to something else. I suppose other programs will also convert the files and maybe that's not what you want to do. Here's a bit from the Amadeus Pro manual:
3.7 The Apple CAF File format
This is a format developed by Apple and designed to replace AIFF in the long term. It removes the 2GB ﬁle
size limitation of AIFF and supports a wider variety of compression algorithms.
While the CAF ﬁle format does in principle support sound data with many channels, the current version of
AmadeusPro only supports the reading and writing of mono or stereo ﬁles in this format. AmadeusPro
will therefore downmix multitrack documents to a mono or stereo ﬁle, whichever is more suitable.
Metadata is lost when saving to the Apple CAF format (this may change in the future, as the format in
principle supports the inclusion of metadata).

ILife Site Causes Crashes

While at work on a PC, I've tried to browse the iLife site and had several different browsers crash due to a QuickTime "malfunction." I'm using QT 7.0.3 for Windows, and the following browsers IE 6, Firefox 1.5 and Opera 8 all crashed. The crashes occur at any given moment--sometimes immediately when the intro QT movie plays, sometimes when I go to each individual iApp page. I've been able to view some of the items under each iApp, but sooner or later--CRASH! Any advice would be much appreciated...otherwise, I guess I have to wait to view on my Mac at home.
