Ilife install is brain dead

I imported an Iphoto library from someone who had a more recent version of iphoto that I had. I got an error saying I needed to install the newer iphoto. No problem I've been thinking about upgrading anyway. I install ilife 2008 which runs fine. I notice it is installing itunes even though I already have 8.02 installed. When I start itunes it says it is corrupted an I need to re-install from scratch. I download itunes and reinstall. This works and there is no music loss. Here is the question.
Why can't the ilife install use common sense when installing and at least ask if you intend to load an older version. It should give you the option of leaving it alone. Today's option of corrupting the existing 8.02 version is brain dead.

I just went through the same exact thing!! It was pretty frustrating!

  • Brain Dead iPod

I have a problem similar to Steve's. Mine is easily recreatable. When listening to an audiobook (.m4b) file. Hit pause, then menu to top menu, and select SLEEP. Ipod turns off, and will not restart unless the hold / select / menu procedure is used. Happens every time. If I go and listen to and MP3 file, and then sleep, it seems to work normally. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
I try to shutdown by listening to a song, but sometimes I set pause on an audiobook, and it times itself out to sleep... unfortunately it's brain dead after that.

    hi CoMpX!
... we can't possibly let your dad go on thinking dark thoughts ...
first check to see if you've got a fast user switching issue:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93764
... but if that isn't it, try:
    (1) do a
    b repair install
(it tends to fix precisely this problem). Go to your add/remove programs, select itunes, click "change/remove",
    b but
    this time select "repair".
... and if that does work:
    (2) try this tip:

Well, my two-month-old MBP has no qualms about booting from a no-name external USB HD I put together...
Given that is is a common point of failure, I would imagine a large Apple Store should keep a stock of HD's on hand.
Now since you're a bit desperate and the genie pops up til Saturday and you seem to be the enterprising kind, let's try an experiment: if you have room enough in the external HD and assuming it isn't a Time Machine volume, why don't you plug it in, stick the Install CD and see if the installer lets you select the external drive as the install target. If you can install Leopard on it, on top of the backup without reformatting, and the Mac can boot from the drive afterwards, at least you would have some functionality restored and would be able to pull your stuff from the internal HD. Apple says booting from USB drives is not supported but that does not equate to not possible; some brands do work. Risks? Always. You can always lose your backup. Like I said, a challenge for an enterprising gal....
Next time around, consider having a bootable external clone at hand for rainy days. I keep three myself...
P.S. Since I'll be in the Dallas-FW area in late June, I can volunteer with the confetti....

  • WRT54G goes brain dead

First of all, the problem I am seeing occurs on an older version of firmware (not sure which one) and the latest (1.02).  Also, I tried this on another WRT54G, with the same result.  2 different routers, and 2 different firmwares.
My ISP (a wireless network, but the output of the modem is a standard Ethernet cable which plugs into the WAN port of the router), seems to reset their tower overnight most nights.  Bottom line is my ISP connection is down for some time (minutes probably).  The WRT54G goes belly up aftwards.  It "thinks" it's connected (the lights all flash correctly, and the status tab in the admin console says it's connected), but there is no access:  no browser, no VOIP, no pinging.  I can reset the router by pulling the plug or doing a disconnect/connect sequence on the status tab, and all is well again.  I have verified this belly-up condition manually:  I can disconnect the WAN ethernet connection for a few minutes, and then connect it back, and the WRT54G has gone brain dead:  no connection.
I have configured the WRT54G manually, and using their installation wizard.  Like I said, 2 different routers, 2 different firmwares (including the latest one).
I borrowed a Motorola WR850G.  Guess what?  It works!  If you disconnect the WAN and reconnect, it just starts working again, no reboot necessary.  So, what is going on with the WRT54G?  Surely this is such a basic issue (recovering from WAN-side lost connectivity), that I can hardly believe this product can't protect itself from this issue.  Help!

You may want to check for PPOe and also make sure that your router is configured with the correct TZ and DST settings. Some ISPs use domain controllers that are very time sensitive. And since DST has changed, you may be running into this problem with your linksys devices.
    Good luck.

  • Iphoto wont open after system upgrade and iLife install

I installed Leopard and reallized i had to also buy iLife because the old version of iphoto was not supported by the the new operating system. Installed iLife and everything works exept iphoto. It acts as though it is "loading library" and then a pop-up window shows up saying:
"The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iphoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previouse versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process may take several minutes depending on the number of photos in the library."
I have hit "upgrade". But it still does not open.
I have about 9000 photos saved on an external drive.
I have repaired permissions as well as trashed iphoto and re-installed.
I read similar posts and am tempted to create a new library with library photo manager but am affraid i will lose some of my pictures.
I should include that because I couldn't open after the os update, I went into the my photo folders through finder and added new pix that I needed to get off of my camera. I've sinced trashed those folders.
    Any ideas?
    THanks in advance.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Thanks for the heads up on the out of date screenshot of BatChmod. It's been updated now. If all you your efforts to get your library updated and running fail you might try rebuilding the library with iPhoto Library Manager. It creates a new library based on the data in the AlbumData.xml file and leaves your current library untouched. Here's how that would work:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • ILife install failed

I tried doing a standard install of iLife 09, but the Installer app crashed in the middle of the install. Now when I try to run the install again, I get the following message:
Install Failed - The following install step failed: run preflight script for iDVD. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
Any idea what I should do?
    <Post Relocated by Moderator>

I had a ton of trouble trying to get it to install on my Mac Pro, yet it installed flawlessly in my MacBook Pro. Tried a ton of stuff; even ended up going back to the Apple store to swap the DVD for another one. It still wouldn't work. (discussed further here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8897211)
It's not my DVD drive because I checked that pretty aggressively (and just installed CS4 with it last week) so it's not the drive. Something weird is up. I'm sure for every one message posted there are a couple hundred people Googling this issue and ending up here.
Anyway, finally, I did a quick bit of desperation-Googling, and based on a suggestion I saw in a Macintouch thread tonight, (http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/ilife09/) I copied the entire DVD to a removable drive that I have here on my desk (a WD MyBook over USB). I then ran the installer from that folder instead of from the DVD.
    It worked perfectly.
So, if you have a removable drive around, give that a shot.
All of this rigmarole has me remembering my Windows days - and not fondly.

  • ILife Install CD won't run

I just received iLife 06 and went to install the software. But the CD won't run. It gets ejected after about half a minute. No message on the screen. Yet all my other CD's work okay. Any ideas? Dan

    Hi Dan
Well first off, it's most often a DVD, does your drive read DVDs? Second, as your drive is working okay then you have to suspect a fauty disc. Can you try it in another machine? Or else return it.

  • ILife Install Error on Macbook Air

I have an 11" Macbook Air, OS X 10.6.8.  I recently completed an erase and install using my reinstall drive.  First problem, iPhoto is missing.  And, I am trying to install iLife, using the reinstall drive, and I am getting an error that the installation failed. Has anyone else experienced these problems with an erase and install?

  • With new ilife installed, old(better) imovie crashes?

    Hi all,
Ever since I installed the new iLife '08, my iMovie HD 6 has been a little messed up. When making a new movie, i can import clips and add them to the timeline. BUT, when i go to try and edit them and I click the "editing" button, it freezes and quits. This happens even if I don't have any clips in the timeline yet(i tried to see if it was the clips).
Also, I already tried the delete the .plist file and repair permissions.. did same thing.
    What should i do?
    please help!
    thanks

    Hi s
Yes that's an observation that I've made too. Something is disturbing iM6.
    Most common other thing:
    • delete iMovie pref file - You've done that
    • run: Repair Permissions (Apple Disk Util tool)- You've done that
    • run: Repair hard disk (Apple Disk Util tool)- You need to start from DVD or ext hard disk
    • free space on internal hard disk: at least 10GB but rather more 25Gb
Can't figure out any more to do for time beeing.
Anyone Please fill in with suggestions !!!

  • ILife Install Issue

I am running a TiBook G4 667 768mb Ram Combodive, OS 10.4.5. I have tried to install iLife 06 and have run into a problem. During the install process, when I am get past the License Agreemnt page and transition into the Destination Selection page, my hard drive is Gray'ed out and the "searching" inidicator keep spinning. Basically the installer hangs as it is looking for eliegible destination drives. All other apps work okay, but obviously I cannot install iLife.
Before purchasing the software I noticed on the "System Requirements" that a 733mhz (or there abouts) processor is required for iDVD. I have no intention of using iDVD, so I went ahead and purchased the software. However, maybe my processor deficiency is making the iLife installer hang. Any suggestions?

lopan... I had the same issue when I tried to load iLife06 onto my daughter's emac.
    Here's my work around.
Boot your tbook in TARGET DISK MODE. you do this by connecting it to another mac (that has the right minimum system requirements for iLife06) with a firewire cable. Then once it's connected, reboot your tbook and hold down the "t" key. This will enable the other mac to see it as a hard disk. You should be able to install it on your tbook then.

  • IMAC not wanting to come after ILIFE installed

I installed ILife yesterday & it worked fine & I used Iphoto & Imovie, and then did my backup last night onto my external hard drive. Then this morning when I woke up to turn on my computer, it just went to a weird screen & said to power it down & try again, so I did this about 3 times & then unplugged my printer & hard drive & then it turned on. Then I left & came back later & it did it again, but nothing was plugged in, and so I powered it down twice & then it came on. Does anyone know what I did or need to do. It has NEVER happened to me before. Thank you.

There are a couple of troubleshooting things to try.
Use Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions on your startup drive.
Restart and press & hold the CommandOption+RP keys all at the same time until you hear two startup chimes. Then release the keys.

  • Macbook late '08 freezing up, has trouble booting after iLife install.

A couple of days ago I installed iLife '11 on my Macbook and went to run the updates that the App Store was telling me were available, including the Mountain Lion 10.8.4 update. I shut the lid of my computer while they were downloading, without thinking and when I opened it again, the screen was dark, but the computer was on. I forced a shutdown and went to reboot but got stuck at the grey Apple logo and timer wheel. I zapped the PRAM and it booted right up but it told me that I needed to restart to install the updates. I did so and had trouble booting again. I had to do the PRAM thing a couple more times to get it to boot but when it did, the only update that installed was GarageBand. I ran it until all of the updates had downloaded and it asked me to restart. Everything went smoothly this time but when I logged back in the OS X 10.8.4 update was sitting there waiting to be installed again. I reset to install twice more but it never installed. Now whenever I'm running an application it will freeze up after a time, and when I go to quit the application the whole computer freezes, forcing me to force shutdown but putting me back to where it freezes on boot up. Freezes when I try to boot into safe mode or recovery mode often as well. I can manage to get in every once in awhile, after zapping the PRAM two or three times, but even that is starting to freeze too. Any one know what's going on? I ran iAntiVirus and it found nothing, I'm working on uninstalling iLife to see if that helps too.
I'm running Mountain Lion on a brand new Toshiba 1tb external drive connected to a Late 2008 aluminum unibody MacBook that I bought off my friend's dad back in March. No internal drive because the one that was in it failed in May.

Let me start by saying do you know how easy it is to replace the hard drive in that MacBook? http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Unibody+Model+A1278+Hard+Drive+Replacement/8 16/1
First thought is to dump the anti virus software. It sounds to me as though your installation of OS X is hosed due to an incomplete update attempt. You need to repair the hard drive using Disk Utility and reinstall Mountian Lion completely, not just the update to 10.8.4.

  • Can't install update, iPod "dead"

This morning, I was trying to sync my iPod touch with my laptop. Two things happened: 1. I kept getting an error message saying that the iPod could not be synced because the disk could not be found. Surprised, I checked in iTunes to locate the folder where my iTunes music is kept, and there it was. Since the folder is where it's supposed to be, why is iTunes giving me this message?
    2. I tried installing the latest version of the iPod software (I think it's 3.1.1), and also received an error message. Now my iPod is in Recovery Mode, but all iTunes will do is say "waiting for iPod" but nothing happens. So I have an iTunes that can't find the folder, and an iPod which has been wiped and won't respond at all. Any ideas? Yes, I searched the discussions but can't find a solution to this particular issue. Thanks..

I was never asked to pay anything, so no. If I'd need to have paid for it, wouldn't I have been prompted to do so? Besides, the error messages I have been getting don't mention anything about payment whatsoever.
