ILife on a Refurb Powerbook.

Hey everybody, I have a question about the refurbs.
I'm thinking of getting a 12" powerbook, and I was wondering if I bought it from the online store, would it come with iLife 06? Or would it just come with 05?
Thanks for the help!

Hi Marlinspike,
Welcome to Apple Discussions
Sorry, the answer is no:
"includes the operating software originally shipped with the unit and the custom software offered with that system. See each products "Learn More" for more details."
Taken from Apple Certified Refurbished Products link on the Apple Store.
Also, if you click the 'Learn More' link on the items listed you get this information:
"The PowerBook G4 comes with an advanced operating system, Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger. The PowerBook G4 also comes with iLife ’05, including iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD and GarageBand.
Note: Other software may or may not be included (pre-installed or on CD's/DVD's) with refurbished products, subject to availability."

  • IMovie Upgrade to iMovieHD6 after purchase of iLife 08 for G4 Powerbook

I purchased iLife 08 two days ago and found that all my iLfe5 programs would update except iMovie because I use them on a Powerbook G4, because of processor limitations. Is there any way I can upgrade to iMovie HD6 without incurring additional expense?

    CATCH 22;
You can't install i-Movie 08 on the G4...it prevents that.
I downloaded i-Movie 06HD, as shown, ...and it prevents THAT!
("You must have i-Movie 08 installed to install 06...") I even tried it with the i-Life 08 install disk on my desktop, but still....
C'mon Apple! Catch 22! Can you e-mail me the program that is installable?
PS I couldn't register i-Life 08, as it said the numbers, with and without suffix, and/or the UPC code number weren't correct. THIS IS BEGINNING TO FEEL LIKE A PC! lol

  • ILife 06 and refurb

I am going to be purchasing a mini in about three weeks. I was wondering if refurbished minis were shipping with iLife 06, or at least eligiable for a discount on it. I would much rather save the hundred dollars on one with a superdrive, but if I'm not going to be able to get some of the new iLife features, I might just buy it new. Thanks.

Yes, all Macs (refurbished or new) should be shipping with iLife '06 if they were purchased on or after January 10, 2006. If your Mac doesn't have an iLife '06 install disk and it isn't installed by default, you can request an update disk here:

  • Did my refurb PowerBook come with complete install disks or upgrade disks?

The 12" PB I purchased in January came with 10.3.X installed but the included DVDs have 10.4. I have been using 10.3.9 until now and will want to upgrade to 10.4 in the near future. How can I tell if they are full install disks. The number on the disk is: 2Z691-5517-A. I'd like to know what to expect.

The only discs which are not the full install say Upgrade or Update on them. Even those are capable of an Upgrade and Install and Archive and Install when it comes to 10.4. They can't install though on an erased drive Tiger directly, and need 10.3 installed first before they can install.
    Before upgrading, follow these tips:

  • Just bought a refurb PB G4 via power seller on ebay. Froze on 1st power up. Report says unresolved kernel. Is this terminal or fixable. Should I ask for money back whilst under warranty? I am not techie so worried and not sure what to do?  OSX 10.5.8

    Hi
Just over a week ago I bought a refurb Powerbook G4 via a power reseller on ebay. The first time I switched it on it froze said OSx had quit unexpectedly... assumed I had done something wrong as not very techie so forced shut down and started again. It is saying the same message frequently and freezing... report says unresolved kernel etc etc etc.
I emailed the apple specialist I bought it off and he advises restarting by inserting the OSX disc and pressing down the C button to reboot from there then selecting disk utility, hard disk and repair. He says it shouldn't be happening as it was fully tested before dispatch?? The only thing I have loaded is an update to adobe and Software for my 3 dongle but as it was freezing before I loaded either of these I don't think they can be responsible??
Please can somebody advise if this is a serious problem. I believe I have warranty for 14 days on this item and I am worried I may have bought myself into a problem. Is this a simple thing to repair. Does he mean me to hold down the C key on the alpha keyboard or the ctrl key? (I emailed him and asked him that 2 days ago and he hasn't responded, hence my worries)... I am sorry if that is a stupid question but I really am not very techie at all.....
Should I just ask for my money back??? If it is a simple repair do I just literally push the disc in, push the power button and hold down the C button?
Any advice would be really apprciated.....
    Thank you
    Debbie

That's where I would begin, too, with
    Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.TStatus of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it saysanything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need touse autility like TechTool Pro,Drive Geniusor DiskWarrior
First we need to determine if the issue you are experiencing with the computer is software or hardware based. Once we have gotten things sorted out there should be time enough to make you decision about keeping or returning it.

  • Target Disk Mode with G4 PowerBook

This week I'm installing a new hard drive in my 2003 867Mhz PB. I plan to do a fresh install from the original CDs so I will have a computer clear of much data for a trip I'm going on next week. I will apply all updates to 10.4.11 to match my Mac Pro.
    1. Can I install my '08 iLife apps onto my PowerBook? I'm the only user of both machines and normally I wouldn't care that the PB still has '06 since I rarely use it. However, the purpose of my trip is to take photos for five days. My PB doesn't meet the minimum requirements for Aperture. I want to start culling some of the photos on the trip so I won't have too many to import to Aperture when I return. Taking a bunch of DVDs isn't an option because the PB doesn't have a SuperDrive.
    2. If I can install iPhoto '08, will Aperture see the PB's iPhoto Library in Target Disk Mode? If I can't install '08, will Aperture see the '06 iPhoto Library in Target Disk Mode? I will not be editing any photos in iPhoto on the PB - only viewing them to delete the bad out of the collection so I won't have to import a huge collection. Obviously iPhoto won't be running on either machine when I connect them in Target Disk Mode, so technically I won't have more than one copy in use at any time.
I have a wireless home network. I could set up file sharing on my PB to transfer the photos, but I think that would be much slower than using Target Disk Mode. Since I'm taking photos for my job, and knowing the schedule of events and shoot list, I'm estimating 10G of photos minimum. That's a lot of time with a pokey old PB for transferring. I won't be taking a Firewire hard drive because it's too bulky with all the other equipment considering that the 120G hard drive I'm installing in the PB won't have many apps. I also won't have internet access so I can't upload the photos to my iDisk.
    3. Does anyone know if Target Disk Mode can be used with my PB when I upgrade my Mac Pro to Leopard? I'm not planning on installing Leopard on the PB (don't know if it meets the minimum requirements) because I don't see myself using the PB too often. By the time I need to be portable more frequently, I will buy a MBP. I hadn't turned the PB on for over a year until last week to make sure it still works for this trip. It would be more useful to buy an extra iPod to store photos than to buy Leopard for the PB.
Sorry if that seemed like a confusing bunch of questions. I tried searching the forums and Apple's support site and now I'm too exhausted to think too clearly. Thanks for any help or pointers.

I have to answer my own post as this question probably isn't allowed here. After installing the new hard drive I read the license agreement while waiting for the restore DVD to finish. I didn't bother with upgrading 10.2 which is what the PB had when new. I immediately installed Tiger and after it's done updating I'll see what software I need/want besides iWork. I'm sure Tiger isn't different in the license than Leopard. (So I'll have to plan on getting a new portable soon as I think the Target Disk Mode is faster for transferring unless I get another Firewire drive.)
But at least the new hard drive and maxed RAM has made my PB a bit more peppy. Or maybe I'm not remembering how slow it was because I haven't yet used it. I'm currently still waiting for Tiger to finish installing. I'll hold off a little longer before upgrading my Mac Pro to Leopard to find out if there are any network gotchas I should know about with my PowerBook. If I'd been using the PB, I'd know all these answers. I've just been so thrilled with my Mac Pro and 23" monitor that the PB hasn't had much appeal. But maybe I'll try to wring a little more life out of the PB.

  • Macbook or powerbook?

    Hey-
I'm going to get a free dell from my mom tomorrow that I intend to sell for $400-500 tops. I'd like to take those proceeds and put them towards buying a refurbished Apple laptop.
however, i'm torn between the refurbished powerbooks which are, shockingly, more expensive than the refurbished macbooks (not looking at macbook pros).
personally, I like the design and build of the powerbooks over the macbooks, but the macbooks (even the non-pro models) look more powerful than the powerbooks. I'll be using it for photoshop work (graphic design, photo cleanup, web design), and multimedia stuff.
so can i get a recommendation? macbook or powerbook? (generally looking for something 15 inch, at least 512mb ram, preferrably 1gb)
    thank you!!!
    chris

The refurbished Powerbooks you are looking at were the top of the line laptops before the Intel Macs were released. They are the predecessors to the MacBook Pros (not the MacBooks.) MacBooks are cheaper because they don't have most of the features that were available in those refurbed Powerbooks.
If you can't spend the money for a MacBook Pro or late-model Powerbook, then you have plenty of choices amongst refurbished iBook G4s or refurbished MacBooks. If you want a 15" screen, then iBooks and MacBooks are off the list. Only the MBPs and PBs have the larger screens.
Read the specs for whatever you're interested in. You will find specs for all Mac models at www.apple.com/support/specs/.

  • IMovie disappeared after iLife 08 upgrade

Hi, I installed iLife '08 on my Powerbook G4 and now iMovie has disappeared. What did I do wrong? Any help is appreciated!

iMovie '08 is not compatible with G4 processors. iMovie HD '06 should still be there (do a spotlight search?) otherwise you can download it again:
    The file isn't large:

  • Imac g5 20" 2.1Ghz VS powerbook G4 17" 1.67Ghz

have just bought a refurb powerbook g4, 1.67ghz ppc processor with 2gb ddr2 ram
was considering migrating fully from imac g5 to this powerbook, but have just done a render test same project, just adding one filter (emboss) to 2mins of video
imac took _1min 31secs_ (i even had safari, firefox, real player, bluetooth file exchange, text edit and preview running at same time- processor set to auto))
powerbook took, (*groan*) wait for it, i mean, really, wait for it.... (had just fcp 5.1 running)
    _9mins 17secs!!!_
i work as a video editor, i have to use my own computer and use a desk to edit from (the deal is i do a bit of pa work as well) i want to be more mobile hence the purchase of the pbg4 which was the highest spec laptop at time of imac g5 purchase 2years ago.
Question is, is this massive deficite in performance is it normal? (8x slower) i was hoping there wouldnt be such a gap, i guess ill just have to cope until i can afford to migrate to intel mbp.
Would there be an app or setting somewhere that would give more juice?

    £1200 !!!
how many times over would the mbp be over the imac g5 (2.1Ghz g5, 1.5gb ram)?
i think ill wait till xmas/jan so battle it out with it for the next month or so.

  • Will a new refurbished mac have iLife'11

That is pretty much my question.
If I buy a refurbished mac from online apple store today, will it come with iLife'11?

Refurbs have always shipped with the versions of software they originally sold with. You will get new discs in the packaging, just like a new machine, but the versions will be determined by whatever that model originally sold with.

  • Does iLife '06 work with Leopard

I want to install iLife '06 on a powerbook G4 ppc running Leopard. Does iLife 06 work with Leopard? In case your wondering, I want to be able to use imovie, and since the imovie version of iLife '08 will not work on a PPC, I have to chose 06.

Yes. You can also install iMovie 6 onto a system with iLife 08 installed.

  • How to clear hard drive?

    Hi there
Soon I am giving my powerbook 12" to a friend. How do I clear off my hard drive of all my personal data (i.e., restore back to original)
Thanks for any help you all can give me.

Actually, there are only three options available for a secure erase. (I wondered about that "17-pass" option since it doesn't exist). There is the "Zero Out" option, the "7-pass" option which zeroes out your data seven times, and then the "35-pass" erase that I mentioned which zeroes out, of course, thirty-five times.
Now for the most infamous answer of all to your new predicament. One that I always give out. Target Disk Mode.
You can do this by connecting your PowerBook to another Mac capable of running/installing the version of Mac OS X that's on your disc. Trouble is, this can only be done--because you have the original discs, not retail versions (or are they retail?)--on a similar model PowerBook. (Or if you have retail versions of the disc, since that runs on any machine).
Though I wonder if it would work if it detects a compatible system, your PowerBook, and goes through with the installation process.
Long story short, Target Disk Mode allows you to do many things, but in your specific case, now that I've gone into it, it might not work with original restore/install discs. (That's a first for me... giving a solution that won't work because of a rare stumbling block).
Target Disk Mode is usually for transferring files, but you can also do it to install software to other computers that may have a faulty optical drive. For instance, if you wanted to install, say, iLife '08 on your PowerBook, you connect it to another Mac with the disc running, and then under Target Disk Mode, select your PowerBook as the destination volume.

You know, you can do a simple method of deleting your files. Any files that you created yourself and know you did, simply put those in the trash. When you've found all your files, do a "Secure Empty Trash" from the file menu instead of the regular empty trash method. The only other thing I see that would need to be deleted are preference files (this is more risky because if you throw something out that the system needs, there could be conflicts... back in the days of Mac OS 9, it was easy to just pick and choose things to throw out. Not with Mac OS X) from things like Safari, iTunes, iPhoto, and any other place with personal info, like Address Book, iCal, etc.
The other big thing would be your user account itself. You'd have to rename it (the short name can't be changed without using third-party software), change the password to something else or just leave it blank so your friend can use it. The problem there is that even though the password is changed, I've found that the system will sometimes look for an original password for things like Keychain Access, etc. So your friend might want to install something new, or could be just working in Safari, and a pop up dialog box might come up asking for a keychain password or admin password (other than the new one).
So I guess the real thing to do is completely reformat your hard drive to pack it all up and make it clean and usable from the start. =(

  • IPhoto Library in Finder changed after iPhoto 6.0.6 update - HELP!!!

I recently installed iLife 06 on my Powerbook and soon afterwards got a message that my iPhoto would be updated. Not having any problems in the past with software updates, I clicked the 'ok' button. Then when I went into Finder, I found that the whole organisation of my photos in the iPhoto Library had changed from being sorted by year, month and day, to year and roll. I HATE this and cannot find any photos or films the way I used to find them. Can anybody explain WHY on earth Apple have decided to sort files this way and if there is anything I can do to revert to the old way? Also in the iPhoto Library now, the same photos seem to be in at least 3 different places. WHAT is that all about??? I would be so grateful if someone could help! Thanks in advance, a very frustrated Mac lover!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Can anybody explain WHY on earth Apple have decided to sort files this way and if there is anything I can do to revert to the old way?
I think they changed the entire database engine with iPhoto6 to take account of ever growing libraries.
But NO there is NO way to revert to the older way, nor is there any need to.
To find pics - and this was also the way in earlier versions - you never need to look in the iPhoto Library Folder. There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Also in the iPhoto Library now, the same photos seem to be in at least 3 different places. WHAT is that all about???
iPhoto - as it has always done - keeps your Original file, untouched, a Modified version (if you've edited it) and a thumbnail. This has been the way since iPhoto 1.
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
IF you do your work in the iPhoto Window - as is intended with the app - then you'll have no problems whatever.
    Regards
    TD

  • Cannot get iPhoto 6 to reference instead of copy photos

I just installed iLife '06 on my Powerbook G4 (867Mhz, OS10.4.6) excited about the new feature that allows referencing rather than copying of photos.
I went to the Advanced Preference and unchecked the Copy Files option. To my dismay, the photos I imported after that do continue to copy files into the iPhoto structure. They're copied both into the Data folder, which I understand are the necessary thumbnails and into an Originals folder. I've checked the Preference repeatedly and it's always checked off.
Since I've tweaked that preference and not had any luck with referencing, I've tried restarting iPhoto, restarting the computer and trashing the iPhoto preference (com.apple
    iPhoto.plist) in my Library.
The photos I'm trying to reference are photos off my digital camera that I've organized in my own file structure on my hard drive. I've tried dragging the folders into the Source pane (of album lists) and tried using the File-->Import to Feature option and it imports (copies) files in both methods.
Does anyone have any ideas of why I can't use the "do not copy" feature? I have waited with bated breath with every new release of iPhoto for this feature and am quite disappointed that I can't get it to work. I cannot find anyone else reporting the problem on these forums or in Google searches.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

  • What's the problem with MPEG2?

    Hi all!
What problem does Apple have with the MPEG2 format?
I mean, look at the new ads "hi I'm a Mac, hi I'm a PC" -- Apple claims to be THE hard & software platform for the modern media life.
Applications like iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iTunes are great, true! I love 'em.
But hello? Is Apple sleeping? Everybody nowadays records his/her favourite TV show via a TiVo or any other DVB-T, DVB-S or DVB-C hardware directly on the harddisk. And this is MPEG2.
Now does Apple really want me to convert my 34 minutes (828MB) MPEG2 into DV format just to please iDVD if I want to make a Video-DVD with three or four of these shows?
828MB converted to DV format lets the size explode to over 7GB(!) -- just to let iDVD convert it back into MPEG2 when it burns the final DVD!
    This is crazy!
    Or am I missing something?
I have Final Cut Studio Pro installed but still, iDVD doesn't accept MPEG2 files.
(Using DVD Studio Pro is not an option here because I want to show my girlfriend how to use iDVD so that she can burn her own DVDs with her favourite shows, and she just has iLife '06 on her PowerBook.)
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Stefan.

    Tag Stefan,
I totally agree...- there's allways room for improvement, software should follow the needs of the market...
    but, as mentioned often:
mpeg2 is a delivery format, not meant for further processing.
And, you "Lieblings" company doesn't support second choice in quality...
out-of-the-box, a Mac does NOT support usage of mpeg2 (as no PC allows that...)...
there are lots of ways to handle that, Apple mpeg2 plugin (20$) + Streamclip allow converting and some basic mpeg2-editing (getting rid of ads, or instance)… Sizzle is a free tool to create DVDs from mpeg2s... VisualHub is such another tool....
PCs are more sold, therefore more apps, more "friends" offering "to share" apps....
handling of mpeg2 in iM IS supported, but just by importing it from a HDcamcorder into iM... then, the app converts it into AppleLosslessCodec… time consuming process, a big überMac needed....
… so all parts are there, theoratically, Apple just has to stick part I to part II to offer an import of external mpeg files into iApps..
    iM7?
    Grüße nach Bonn....
