ILife11-  iphoto crashes during "updating iphoto library" on 3 of 6 macs

aaaaaaaaaargh! i am currently running os x 10.6.4 on 6 macs, installed ilife11 on all plus the iphoto update 9.0.1, all well on 3 machines (where iphoto library is relatively small) and i was able to install camera raw and the latest iphoto update 9.1 as well
on 3 other machines with iphoto content (about 180gigs) they all crashed repeatedly after trying to update for 3-4 hours....... i also tried to do a very long permissions repair but to no avail
what to do? shall i try to upgrade to 10.6.5 and hope for the best? i do have backups but would like to get this sorted
thanks clever ones!
francois

ola terence, MBP crashed again (almost right at the end of "upgrading iphoto database), i am waiting for MP and mac mini to follow suit
this is what i tried (amongst other things which did not solve the problem)
deleted the "corrupt" iphoto app, re-installed ilife11, installed iphoto update 9.1, did a (long wait) permissions repair and then re-activated the iphoto app
what i'll try next-
delete the iphoto library, install a copy of my "old" ilife09, run permissions repair and then activate iphoto......
eish!
francois, now aka macfit from running around/between computers, lovely way to spend a splendid saturday evening!

worth looking at for the future to understand backing up etc

  • Can I import the Iphoto library from iOS to the Mac?

The HDD where I kept my iPhoto library is deth. The library is sync with the Ipad. Can I import the Iphoto library from iOS to the Mac? I want to keep the organization (albums, events). Is it possible?

No, and the images on your iPad are lower quality than the ones in iPhoto on your Mac. Restore from your back up is the  best solution.
You can get images from your iPad with an 3rd party app like iExplorer, but there are others. Search on MacUpdate

  • ITunes 7.0.2.16 Crashing during "Updating library"

    Hello,
iTunes 7.0.2.16 seems to install just fine, along with Quicktime. My problem comes when I open iTunes. It wants to update my library (I do not know why), and I seem to have no control over preventing it from doing so.
Anyway, it proceeds to nearly finish. Within' the last 5% or so, it crashes. The box that appears is one of those "Would you like to send this crash information to Microsoft" boxes that give little more than techno garble about what the error could possibly be.
I haven't found anyone else experiencing this problem yet. I've tried uninstalling iTunes and Quicktime both, and reinstalling. But to avail.
    Can anyone help?

the library update may be crashing on a song file (or files).
tracking down which file is associated with this can be a trial. but some folks have been having some success using Roy B's technique from the following post:

  • IMac Crashes during updating of thumbnails

My daughter's iMac 24 (8,1 from 2008) had a problem last week.  Took it to Apple.  They first said it was the HD, then said it was the video card. They called and said they could not boot from the HD, but could from external (which they couldn't do before the video card was replaced.  Asked to wipe the HD, which was fine since I have a TM back up (and a SuperDuper back-up at work).  They said not to restore everything from TM, but to only restore apps, then bring things over manually....something a possible software issue.
Fired up the iMac, brought over movies and documents.  During the process to move the photos, the iMac crashed.  Long story short, I moved the library from TM to the pictures folder today.  It took a few hours (lots of photos).  Opened iPhoto and it said it was updating thumbnails.  Before the progress bar moved, the iMac rebooted.  I reopened iPhoto and clicked "finish later" re the thumbnails.  The library opened, all the folders/albums were there, but no thumbnails.  The photos seemed fine.
I then restared iPhoto holding down option-command.  I first repaired permissions, then it went to the indexing of the thumbnails.  No progress on the status bar and the gear stopped spinning and the iMac rebooted.
Again, option-command and I tried to rebuild the database (the fourth choice on the list).  It took less than 10 seconds and the iMac rebooted.  The crash report is below.
I used iPhoto Library Manager (3rd party program) to rebuild the library as well.  That seems to have worked (it's still going).  Anyone see anything in the report that would be of concern?  I'm thinking that perhaps I have a bigger problem than the video card (perhaps a logic board issue).
    Thanks in advance.

They said not to restore everything from TM, but to only restore apps, then bring things over manually....something a possible software issue.
Not sure what this is about or what it means with reguards to iPhoto or what you did to "bring things over manually"
But the iPhoto library is a SQLite database and must always be treated as a single entity - you can not not manually resotre pieces of it and use it - you must use the Time Machine application and restore the iPhoto library intact as one single restore

  • How can I share iPhoto library between users on same mac. External hard drive has not worked.

I need to share and edit photos between users on one mac. I have tried sharing the file on an external drive but this has caused all sorts of problems with photos disappearing and/or not being able to be edited. I was hoping iCloud sharing or family would work but being on the same machine I need the main iCloud account active at all times. This is a workplace so the second user has minimal access permissions.

okay I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but i just imitated the same scenario on my mac and it seems to work fine. I made sure to change permissions of the shared folder AND the the actual photo library. I gave everyone access to everything (as far as the folder & library was concerned). I uploaded & viewed from both accounts. You might want to view permissions of your entire disk in disk utility to make sure there isn't an error.. Make a backup first though.
The permissions will not stick. Earlier iPhoto versions did allow this, because iPhoto did not write to an iPhoto Library if you only wanted to browse it, but with iPhoto '11 the behaviour changed. Opening an iPhoto Library from a different account will write files with changed ownership right into the library, and that will cause problems if you edit or tag photos from a second account. The document I linked to in my earlier post is Apple Support's answer to these permission problems, when using a shared folder:     iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users

  • Sharing iPhoto library over network between two Macs

I would like to edit/create albums via sharing.
I can easily share photos between my two Macs via sharing, but I can't move photos between albums, can't create new albums, etc. (I would like to be able to use my laptop in our home network to modify the albums on the PowerMac in the basement.)
I don't want to move files from one computer to another; via sharing, I essentially want to be able to modify the host library's albums. I don't want to edit the photos as much as I want to move them. Is this possible?

    Hi there,
There are two ways that I have tried to share a Library. The first method was to delete the empty library on my laptop and start iPhoto. The application could not find the library and asked me where it was. I linked it to the library on the other computer over the network. This method works but can be very slow when editing or scrolling (especially when using AirPort). It is also safer to only have one iPhoto accessing one library at a time.
The other way that I have been able to relibaly access and edit an iPhoto library on another mac was by using Virtual Network Computing (VNC). Essentially it provides the user the ability to see and controll another computer on the network from their machine. It does work and is alot faster than the first method but the downsides are that the host computer cannot be used at the same time and VNC software does not resize the desktop when, for example, accessing a 20" screen from a 12" laptop. This means that you have to resize the iPhoto window to fit on the smaller screen.
For the host computer (server) I used Real VNC and for the network client I used Chicken of the VNC.
The software works well and is usefull to access emails on the computer in the office from the living room. I have to say that I have stopped using these methods as they both tend to hogg the network and other users in the family are stuck for long periods of time trying to load a web page.
    Hope this helps,
    Dan

  • Several questions about moving iPhoto library from PowerBook G4 to Mac Book Pro.

    Hello,
So yes I was running an old PowerBook G4 laptop, had moved my iPhoto library onto a 2 TB external hard drive so I could free up space on my laptop. Now that I have a new Mac Book Pro, I decided to move the library onto it. Everything seems to have moved ok, except there seems to be a bunch of duplicates, some even have multiple copies. Now this is me looking at the events, and even the names are duplicated.
Can I safely remove and delete the duplicates, or is this just showing me the same photos / events / whathave you?
Also, I noticed when looking at the photos under library, the index shows a close up of any face that is in the photo. Is there any way to turn that feature off so I don't have to look at the same photo taking up a ton of space? Makes it harder to figure if I have duplicates.

decided to move the library onto it. Everything seems to have moved ok, except there seems to be a bunch of duplicates, some even have multiple copies
How did you move the library to the new MBP? The correct way was to connect external HD with the library to the MBP and just copy the library into the Pictures folder.  Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select the newly copied library and open it.
At no time should one library be imported into another.  That created multiple duplicates and creates a real mess of the library.

I just upgraded to Macbook pro retina display.
I have all my photos in iphoto on my older macbook.
I use faces on every photo and instead of just copying the photos, I want to make sure I do not lose anything (like faces desigantions).
    How can I do this?
I also have a time capsule that has many backups from my macbook.
    Thank you

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • Editing my iPhoto library on someone else's Mac

I have my iPhoto library on an external hard drive since it's so big. My Mac is quite a few years old and I have lots of friends who have newer, more powerful machines. If I use a friend's Mac and hold down Option when starting up iPhoto, it asks me to choose an iPhoto library. I was wondering, does doing this affect the local preference file or Application Support folder on my friend's Mac, or can I do this without it modifying the files on the Mac at all? Since the iPhoto library is on my external, I figure that loading that library will modify only files and settings within that package file itself. Since I don't want to modify the settings on a friend's computer or leave any of my own information behind on a public computer, I thought it would be smart to ask how that works. Thanks for your help!

Opening your iPhoto library will not modify your friend's computer (except iPhoto always opens the last used library so be sure to switch back before disconnecting the EHD and leaving
Also note that if you open your library with a later version of iPhoto it will be converted and then will no longer be able to be opened with the older version

  • Xfer subset of iphoto library with info to another mac

I want to transfer 300 photos with the descriptions/info data to another iphoto library on a different MAC.
any suggestions would be appreciated  thanks

Select the 300 photos and use the Share ➙ Burn menu option in iPhoto.  This will create a mini library on the CD which, when inserted into the optical drive on the other Mac, will show up in the left hand pane of iPhoto.
Then drag the disk icon onto the library icon above it to import the photos, the edited versions and all metadata into the library.

  • How can I copy my iPhoto library file to my other macs?

I have 4 Mac's and I've kept all my photos on one of them primarily. How can I find the iPhoto library file and copy it to the other Macs?

There are two apps that can do that for your.
1 - the better of the two is  iPhoto Library Manager.  You will have to manually select those Events in Library A that are not in Library B and copy them to B.  Then do the same for B to A.  This also copies both the original and edited versions, keywords, titles, descriptions, faces and places.
2 - the second app is SyncPhotos.  This one is automatic and will copy the original images in A that are not in B into B and the same for B to A. This does not copy edited versions or any of the metadata, i.e. keywords, etc.

  • Apple tv crashed during update

My apple tv has crashed during an update. I has got stuck on step 1 of 2 preparing to update.
I may have caused this by trying to use during update.
Should i unplug and start over
    Thanks

You are not supposed to use while it is downloading and applying the update. It's very likely to have caused the issue. I don't think you can just unplug and start over, though you may try.
I would suggest grabbing a micro USB cable and restoring in iTunes, which will also download the latest update

  • Sharing iPhotos library accross more than 1 MAC

As I now also own a MacBook Pro I want to have access to my photo library which is based on my Mac Pro rom my MacBook, how is this done?
    Thanks
    John

There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other machine to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then network the two Macs together, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and on the other Machine, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both machines for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto on both machines.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions.
On each machine in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both machines will have full access to the library, in fact, both machines will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
