Ill-advised OS X upgrade...?

Hello, hope I'm posting this in the right area.
I'm running a first revision (pre-April 2004) 1GHz eMac that shipped with Jaguar. My supposedly tech-savvy friend decided to 'help' me in my absence by 1) boosting me up to 512MB RAM using sticks from an old machine of his (which seems to have worked just great), and 2) installing Panther from disks that came with his 2004 iMac. Hmm.
This latter move seems to have caused me some fairly irritating problems: numerous applications (for example iMovie and Classic) now crash with a 'quit unexpectedly' dialogue box during or immediately after launch. In addition, dialogue boxes that pop-up during normal use of several otherwise-running-ok applications - for example in Illustrator and Photoshop, asking if you want to save while closing a file - now crash the applications with the same 'quit unexpectedly' dialogue box appearing. Apart from this pop-ups-causing-immediate-crashes problem, though, most of the software I have still works fine...and many of the new features in Panther do, too.
The problem I have now is that I do not have my original Jaguar disks any longer, so I can't (I don't think?) do what I'd normally do, which is just backup all my software and files, then do a clean re-install of Jaguar.
My question is, I guess, this: can I end the misery by simply going out and buying my own version of Panther (or indeed Jaguar or Tiger), or alternatively, might I need something like DiskWarrior to patch things up from here?
Thanks for your time!

Thanks very much; looks like sound advice! Thanks for the tips on getting a compatible version too, that's useful. Since you mention Leopard - would that run ok on my system as I outlined it above? Or would I need a massive RAM hike to get it running smoothly? (I'm on 512MB at the moment)
Oh, and I notice that, on the site in the link you posted, they're careful to say that - for example - the 10.4 discs require 10.3, etc etc. Would you advise me to go for 10.3 first, as that's the version I now have problems with, whereas my 10.2 worked ok? Or could I hope straight to a 'legit' version of 10.4 from a stuttering 10.3? Come to think of it, can I even hop straight to a legit 10.3 if I'm now running a dodgy 10.3 which has effectively over-written a legit 10.2 that I no longer have the disks for..?
Cheers again!

YOu'll have to restore, nothing else you can do.
If you have an older backup you can restore to that.

  • Advise memory/ram upgrade !!

I have 1gb of memory in my PB.I want to upgrade to 2gb by adding 1GB of memory. The serial # of my computer is W8540xxxxxx. It is out of the range given by apple for those show problem during upgrade .I need your advise ,if it is ok! to go ahead and upgrade or stay with the one i have ,until apple gives solution to the problem. Is there any one affected having serial #out of the range?
    Peace
    Thanks

The issue you are referring to is with the lower memory slot, and not every PB is affected by that. If you want to see if yours is OK, move your existing memory (assume you have one 1gb stick ) into the other slot and see if it works. If so, then I wouldn't hesitate to get another 1gb. Recommend sticking with Samsung, Crucial, Kingston or other name brand memory with lifetime warranty, that is designed for our PB's. A search on this site will tell you which Samsung memory works, and both Crucial and Kingston have tools on their sites to look up the right memory. Memory can fit the spec, generically, and not work well.

  • Can I upgrade my MacBook Pro RAM to 16Gb eventhough Apple advises 8GB max upgrade? Will it damage my computer if I do upgrade to 16Gb?

    Hello All MacPro users,
I have a Macbook pro 2011 15" and since I am into composing music I use Logic Pro and Native Instruments which require quite some RAM accessing & loading complex samples and effects. I was wondering if I can upgrade the ram to 16gb or even more eventhough Apple indicates 8gb as max RAM upgrade. I read some contadictory information. some say that Macbook pro will support 16gb. What if I upgrade will it damage my system?

  • Would you advise me to upgrade my mbp to mountain lion?

does anyone advice me to upgrade my macbook pro 15 inches 2.3 GHZ to mountain lion?
is it true that reduce the 50% of the battery?
i dont like the new "200 features", i dont care about the twitter, facebook features...
i dont have an iphon or an ipad so i dont care about icloud...
    doesnt sounds interesting to me
by the way, some people are saying that the new upgrade 10.8.1 doesnt fix the battery issue
if you check http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1571 it doesnt say that its already fixed
soo, do you advice me to upgrade?

I won't say I have had a battery capacity increase per se, but I haven't suffered any loss.
I will also say that if it weren't for the iCloud integration (and maybe Notification Center), I'd still be on Snow Leopard. Use what you like

  • Advise on RAM upgrade...

    Hi all,
    I have an early 2008 MacBook, with 2GB RAM (PC2-5300 DDR2 667 MHZ) and a 2.4 GHZ processor.
Recently I've started to use my laptop alot more for my research, which involves a lot of computation work (and unfortunately necessitates a VM to run Windows applications). As such I feel I need to improve the performance of my machine, and I think increasing the RAM is the best move.
I'm not sure as to which RAM should I install though? The 4GB PC2-5300 DDR2 667MHZ? Or something else?
It's an expensive enough job so I'd love a bit of advice!
    Thanks

  • End of Upgrade Cycle for CS3 and CS4... Really Adobe?

As if business wasn't bad enough now I see there will be no upgrade paths past december for CS3 and 4 users. Is this how Adobe plans to keep users away from stopping their upgrades and reducing the number of machines they run Adobe products on? I understand Adobe is not a non-profit and has has to turn a revenue, but the geniuses at Marketing here have made a huge mistake by basically telling their customers that what they have so far will be worth zilch in comes 2013. That arbitrary deadline, is not consider some people who on the east coast are now cash strapped as anyone having to choose between home repairs and other such marvelous stuff and upgrading to CS6 guess what they'll choose. And for the lucky ones not heavily affected by the storms, they will donate to help their community before they will spend money to upgrade perfectly good software.
It wasn't enough that the upgrade path wasn't much of a discount, but in the current economy every penny counts! The choice of stopping support for CS3 and CS4 in my personal opinion an ill-advised move. I personally went from 3 to 4 within a short amount of time... then when 5 came out my budget didn't allow so I needed to wait. The new CS6 isn't direly needed so I decided I'd have to loose some additional "upgrade power" because money need to be directed elsewhere now... but the news that I'd loose all the upgrade power and would have kept on upgrading for nothing it's just ridiculous... and if that's the treatment a customer will have to expect from now on I think I'll use what I have and move to alternatives stopping to personally support Adobe products an rely on licensed copies at work instead. Perhaps Adobe hasn't notices we aren't exactly doing that great in US between the current economical situation, the various setbacks experienced across the country and for the fact that in this particular business most work is often being outsourced out of US these days... I am sure you will have a huge market on the countries where the outsourced work is being sent... as far as I am concerned comes 12/31/2013 I will no longer be an Adobe customer as Adobe is forcing me out of the upgrade cycle and I won't plan to re-enter anytime soon in the coming future... lesson learnt.
Thank you for your time (if any of the marketing gurus will have cared to read this far without laughing and discounting with a "screw those old customers, they should've upgraded earlier" which was basically the content of the email I got this week... pasted below)
    Cheers,
    tfbkny
Content of email received from Adobe saying last chance to upgrade now or what you got will be worthless in less than a couple months.
    Dear Creative Suite customer:
We want to make sure you're aware of an important change to Adobe's upgrade policy that may affect you.
Beginning January 1, 2013, only Creative Suite customers with licenses for CS5 or CS5.5 versions will qualify for upgrade pricing to CS6.
Due to this change, we will only continue offering CS3 and CS4 customers like you special upgrade pricing through December 31, 2012.*
    * Owners of CS3 and CS4 individual products and suite editions will be eligible to receive upgrade pricing to CS6 until December 31, 2012. After that date, only customers on CS5 or CS5.5 will qualify for upgrade pricing to CS6.

Adobe doesn't care, they don't have to. I like Phsotoshop and have been using it professionally for 20 years, but lets face it, I wouldnt mind some really good competition from another source. It didnt use to be the only game in town, and doesnt have to remain so.
I could brainstorm how I would want competing software to look like. Pshop is not the easiest workflow possible. Illustrator is clearly deficient to even CorelDraw, and certainly Freehand. I've been meaning to reconnect with CorelDraw. It did some cool things.
Google Chrome is pulling a lot of manoevers software wise and I hope they try to go a little deeper and give Adobe a run for their money on the one program they feel justifies unbelievable gouging. Go investigate Ableton Live if you want to see what a company that cares about its customers is doing, ADOBE. Audition is a JOKE compared to Ableton Live. Thank God we're not powned on the audio side by these suits.
The idea that a company would peddle buggy software, which CS4 was..., although some of that was Apple's fault, is bad, the upgrade prices were ridiculous, and this is the end of the road for me currently. The idea that a company would actively
push away customers is pretty incredible. "But I sent you an email!" Whoops, you gotta pay $1900 for production premium CS6! HAHAHAHAHA. Time for a YT video with my old hard copy box. Sounds like a good idea.
There are too many options on the motion graphics side, and I'll keep a static machine to run Pshop and AE CS4.
The masters of the universe will have theit way, and the rest must bow to their ambivalent greed. At least that's the way they think. It would seem that Adobe and Apple really, really want some upstarts to come up. Maybe $360 for a year to figure out an exit might work. It will be interesting to see if this hits earnings. VERY interesting.

  • Upgrade to Tiger if I have Panther requirements?

Alright, thing now is that I realized that I think I may have all the requirements to upgrade to Tiger, when I bought an Apple-supplied card the ATI 128MB PCI graphics card. I have the cd version of Tiger just in case, but by buying this card will it support me now on Tiger? Cause I have enough HD space, more than least amount of RAM (384mb), a G3 350MHz CPU, built-in FireWire, and hopefully the right graphics card: ATI Rage 128mb PCI 16vram video card.

If you look at this graphic, you'll see that the B&W G3 is at the bottom of the list, meaning that its hardware just qualifies it for running Tiger. The B&W G3 that you're considering to purchase is the slowest model made - the 300 MHz. It undoubtedly has the stock Apple/ATI Rage 128 graphics card, which was a decent card back in '99 with 16 MBs of SGRAM. Obviously, it can't compare to newer cards using DDR memory and having more of it. How large is the hard drive on that B&W? If it's the very small 6 GB drive, you'd need to upgrade it to something more reasonable. You'd also need to buy a universal installer/retail version of Tiger, because your iMac's Restore disks won't install properly on a B&W G3. Additionally, you'd need to know if the B&W-300 has a DVD-ROM drive, to install Tiger from the DVD disks that it comes on. Apple-US had a trade-in option for CD media, but the directions on the form indicate that the offer has expired.
When the target computer is the oldest supported device to run a given OS version, you can expect it to be a bit more sluggish than newer models with hardware that's optimized to take advantage of the OS' features. Buying an 8 year-old computer with the idea of installing/running the latest OS on it is probably ill-advised, because of the related expenses of hardware upgrades. I'd recommend a slightly newer used Mac, like an AGP G4 or better. If you already owned this B&W and just wanted to try out Tiger on it (with little expectations as to performance), I'd have a different opinion.

  • Oracle  9.2.0.1.0 to 10g Upgradation testing

    Hi All,
We are upgrading our database from Oracle 9i to 10g.
Our development environment is Ascential Datastage ETL Tool
Our project has been already developed by some other team and now only database up gradation is happening.
    Need some clarifications and solutions
    1)     How we can get to know all these objects are properly upgraded
    2)     What can be the best testing strategy for testing all these database objects like tables, functions, procedures , views, sequences etc. If any similar document has been prepared by any of the projects, please send to my mail id
    3)     Is there anything we need to do change in any of the objects to make compatible with 10g. like any functions that has to be replaced or datatype mismatching etc …..
    4)     The type of testing needs to be done for different database objects.

Anyone familiar with the way English is spoken in America, excluding one small enclave in North Carolina perhaps, should understand a couple of things:
    1. I understand a bit of Hindi so I understood some of the background conversation while on the phone with the spammers.
    2. The individuals speaking to me were as dumb as a bag of hammers.
Now according to Wikipedia the planet has about 370 million people who speak Hindi as a first language and another 580 who speak it as a second language. 950 million people minus two seems a reasonable ratio.
Anyone looking too hard to find an insult can likely find it looking at their own reflection in the mirror. Grow up and get over it folks.
BTW: Don ... you are the one that referred people to your website claiming it contained the list that you use. Taking you at face value it appears that your list does not include doing a backup. Perhaps you are so expert in the practice that you "understand" that but if you are going to refer novices to your site you need to offer them a complete list along with the ubiquitous advertising.
Anyone wanting my list can get it for free ... here it is:
    1. Read the relevant Oracle documents
    2. Go to metalink and research any problems others have had with the procedure
    3. Create an RDA, zip it, and have it ready to upload to metalink
    4. Perform a level 0 backup using RMAN
    5. Verify the backup is valid and can be used for a restore
    6. Start flashback logging if not already running
    7. Create a guaranteed restore point
    8. Follow the directions at Step 1 except as modified by docs read in Step 2.
Not one of those steps is in your list Don? And, quite frankly, I think people would be ill-advised to consider steps on what to do for "SLOW PERFORMANCE AFTER UPGRADE" any guidance on performing the upgrade itself.
But heck ... anytime you can send people to a page full of advertisements why miss the chance.
People interested in tuning would be well advised to go to one of these URLs:
