"illegal instruction" during install of xapian-ruby-bindings (AUR)

In the installation process of xapian-ruby-bindings from aur the command
/usr/bin/ruby -I.libs -I. ${dir}$tst
is run from within a shell script. On my system, it causes an "illegal instruction" error, thus the installation fails.
I read in another thread* that this is somehow related to programs being compiled "for SSE2 or something similar". I do not know anything about that, anyway below is my /proc/cpuinfo

By the way, I also get an "illegal instrucion" error when calling (not installing) the mu** program (installed from AUR). This may or may not be related.

If you think so . . . I did not provide the output deliberately, because it really does not contain anything interesting besides "illegal instruction". Anyway, here are the last lines of the xapian-ruby-bindings build:

"Ungültiger Maschinenbefehl" is german for "illegal instruction". (This one never gets translated, no matter what I do with LC_ALL etc.. I hope you do not mind the other german words—I can run the build again with english language settings if anything is not self-explanatory.)
mu is shorter:
$ mu find bla
Ungültiger Maschinenbefehl
EDIT: Replaced german output by its english equivalent, except for mu's error message, which is german regardless of LC_ALL.

  • Solaris 10 Net Install - Illegal Instruction

    Hi Colleagues,
I 've been wrestling with this for awhile and can't seem to correct the problem. Searching the forum and the Web has also not returned any solutions.
Problem: I'm trying to install Solaris 10 10/09 on a SunFire V100 (128MB Ram, 40GB and 160GB HDD, CD-rom) using the DVD image from Sun.
Here is the result the I receive:
Executing last command: boot net - nowin
Boot device: /pci@1f,0/ethernet@c File and args: - nowin
Using Onboard Transceiver - Link Up.

    Client IP address: 192.168.1.3

    ok
boot net - install returns with the same as above.

You're going to need a lot more RAM in that tiny beastie:
Thankfully, there are four DIMM slots on the V100 systemboard and you can max it out at 2GB of PC133 memory.

The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction CS:05aa IP: 0480 OP:6300 72006f Choose close to terminate application. Neither close or ignore works. I don't know where to turn for help I'm using Windows 7. Thx

    Hi there,
I am also experiencing this problem, but with 1.4.2_06. Last week (late Jan 2005) the dynamic versioning was working fine, downloading and installing the latest version of Java as required.
However now (early Feb 2005), I am finding that after downloading the latest version of Java and beginning the install, I am getting this error.
I was hoping that you may have heard of a cause or solution for this problem?
    Many thanks

  • 16 bit MS-DOS NTVDM illegal instruction when Webstart tries to install JRE

    Hi
When I configure a JNLP to download a JRE (if necessary) using the following line,
    <j2se version="1.4.2_01" href="http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se"/>
it downloads a JRE but then fails while trying to install it, in a couple of ways.
The first problem I get is a warning that the applications digital signature has an error. It has expired. It expired on the first of May this year at 1am. Ignoring that I press <Run> and proceed with the installation.
Now the big error, a windows dialog box (I'm using NT here, and it happens on other similar machines in the institution as far as I can tell):
    Title: 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
    Body: C:\DOCUME~1\<profilename>\APPLICA~1\Sun\Java\DEPLOY~1\cache\6.0\ext\E12499~1\J2RE-1~1.EXE
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
    C5:085b IP:01df OP:63 6f 72 61 74 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
    <Close> <Ignore>
Even if I choose "Ignore" the result is a broken/partial install of the JRE, with the only directories being j2re1.4.2._10 containing a file called dp14210.vbs and a bin directory. In the bin directory there is only a subdirectory called server, and in server there are two files, Xusage.txt and jvm.dll.
Note that I have not mis-typed the name of the directory above: although the jnlp requests jre1.4.2_01 the directory that is created is for jre1.4.2_10.
I have tried this for various other JREs including 1.6.0_01 and 1.5.0_12 and I get the same problem with the out-of-date certificate and the 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem illegal instruction.
The name of the file that gets executed after I click "Run" depends on the version of the JRE I am trying to install and follows a naming convention. In the case of the 1.5.0_12 jre the file name is "jre-1_5_0_12-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe" and in the case of the 1.4.2_01 it is "j2re-1_4_2_01-windows-i586-iftw.exe"
    Any help appreciated, thanks,
    Anthony Holland

I'm positive JRE 5 can't be installed on NT. According to this 1.4.2 neither (I thought it could, all I knew about was this ). Maybe you could try giving a look at jnlp specs to see if any particular 'os' attribute can 'work' to auto-install on NT, but I think you're facing a dead end.
    Bye.
PS: did you try downloading the exe and installing it via prompt? If that fails too, I guess you can call it off.
PPS: you can install [1.4.1_07|http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/1.4.1_07/jre/install-windows.html] (if it's enough for your purpose).

I have completed an installation. I had to install from the CDs and deselected the portal from the automatic start and configuration option screen.
Also ksh is needed for the discover4 configuration. It took about 4hrs installing from the CDs.
Now I have problems starting apache, getting unresolved symbols loading some of the modules.

  • WindowServer crashed during login - Illegal Instruction

In the console log (below) I found the following entry, which indicates that the WindowServer crashed, which explains the behavior, but not the cause of the problem.
    Any ideas anyone?
P.S. I don't have DivX installed, so the fix to a similar problem posted here earlier doesn't work for / apply to me.

  • Ultra 60 console port gives OK Illegal Instruction

I've got an Ultra 60 whose video no longer displays. The ethernet port had died a couple of weeks previously. I had been trying to swap in a couple of base 100 ethernet pci cards into, to see if they were recognized. I had installed one last week, but didn't have time to bring up the machine until this week. I discovered the video no longer displays but the monitor gets a signal as it refreshes during reboot. Tried a couple of monitors and 3 cables, no luck, everything works the same, just no video.
Found a thread about an Ultra 10 with a similiar problem and they discussed going through the console port (serial port A). I tried hooking up a null modem cable to my thinkpad, installed TeraTerm, but when I try to connect (9600, 8, N, 1), I do get an OK prompt. When I try to press any key though, I get "Illegal Instruction".
I've gone through the reference guide, service guide, and searched the forums, but I can't find anyone else that's had this problem. Would anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
    thanks,
    kevin

Power cycle the box and watch if it comes back to the ok prompt (or boots).
If you still get illegal instruction power off and remove any PCI cards and try again. could be a device corrupting the NVRAM.
Also a setenv defaults (from ok prompt) might clear a corrupted NVRAM. this however will clearout any custom boot settings.
If you can try to do a
    ok> printenv
    and capture the settings first.

  • Step by Step Instructions for Installing Self Signed Certificate using Certificate Modification Tool

I am looking for some step by step instructions for installing the self signed certificate from my Microsoft SBS 2003 server on a Treo 755p and 750p.  In particular I need some help with the form of the actual certificate and how to use the Certificate Modification tool.
Some questions I have are as follows:
    1. When I install the certificate on a Windows Mobile device I used an exported version of the certificate.  This export is done using the DER x.509 format.  Is that the same form I’ll need for the Palm?  Do I need some other form? Can/should I just use sbscert.cer file that is generated when SBS is configured?
    2. Does the self signed cert need to be installed on the computer being used to update the Palm or do we just need to be able to access the appropriate .CER file?
    3. There are three things included in the PalmCertificatesTool.zip file:
                                    Trusted CAs (folder)
                                    Cert2pdb.exe
                                    PalmCertificates.exe
How do I use these tools?
    4. It looks like the PalmCertificates.exe file opens an interface that will allow me to browse to the desired .CER file.  Then I suppose I use the < Generate PDB > to create something that needs to then be uploaded to the Palm device?  Not having any real experience with a Palm device how do I upload and install this file?
    5. Once uploaded do I do something on the device to install it?
If there is some white paper that provides step by step instructions on doing this that would be great.
    Thanks,
    Walt Bell

    Thanks for that.
I have one question after reading the article 43375:
The article has you "Turn of AutoSync" and then "Reset the device".  It then indicates the device should be left idle.
The next step relates to running the PalmCertificates.exe, navigate to the certificate file and add it and then run the < Generate PDB > button.  Should the device be connected to the computer during this process? If so, at what point after the reset do you connect it to the computer?
    Thanks!

  • How to install XE and specify the SID (instead of XE) during install

I would like to use Oracle 10g Express Edition for development purposes but I already have an existing project that requires a specific SID.
I tried following some instructions on asktom.oracle.com on changing the SID but it was disastrous and did not work.
Ultimately I have to rip XE off and reinstall everything because it was so mucked up.
I would like to reinstall XE but during install specify the SID just like I can with Oracle 10g R2 Enterprise Edition.
Can someone please tell me how to do this, and Oracle if you are listening, can you modify XE so that the SID can be specified on install? This one thing is a deal breaker for me and am considering falling back and using postgresql for the initial release of this product instead of Oracle to clients. I am sure many of them would upgrade to Oracle Enterprise edition if I were able to release a product based on XE first.
    thanks
    OracleTek

At the time of installation , you can't change SID XE.
After installation, you can add another service name

  • Use a different SSO Server than the one specified during install.

    Hello,
I found on documentation that OAS Portal Configuration Guide would tell me how to use a different SSO Server than the one specified during install. I need to tell an existing Portal installation to use a new Identity Management infrastructure server I installed.
However, documentation does not mention anything related to that. It states that ptlconfig would do the trick, but ptlconfig instructions are not clear on how to accomplish this.
Could anyone that has done this before, help me out? Thanks in advance...

    Hello jlubbers,
That is exactly what I am talking about, the ptlconfig does not model SSO components. So I assume it is incorrectly referenced on several points of documentation as a tool to work with SSO parameters or configuration.
I need to know how to tell my Portal to look at the new SSO server. If someone has done it before, please let me know.
    Thanks again.

  • NTVDM CPU encountered an illegal instruction

I have a jsp page that displays a graph using an applet and recently updated the page to use dynamic versioning for the JVM. A couple of weeks ago (late Jan 2005) the dynamic versioning was working fine, downloading and installing the latest version of Java as required (it was then 1.4.2_06 and at the time of this post, still is).
However now (early Feb 2005), I am finding that after downloading the Java plugin and beginning the install, I am getting the error below:
    16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
The NTVDM CPU encountered an illegal instruction.
    C5:0555 IP:0288 OP:63 6f 6e 74 65 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
Has anyone else experienced this problem with v1.4.2_06 (I have seen on this forum someone had problems with v1.4.2_05 but problem went away when v1.4.2_06 was released a while back)?
I have tested on a few PCs in my office, all running Windows XP sp2 and IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2, same result.
    cheers

I have the same problem with XP sp2. Did you find a fix?

  • IBook Illegal Instruction, Black Screen... Death?

I have an ibook G4... I just got an iPhone and was told to update iTunes before synching.
I chose to do the most recent software updates on iTunes, iPhone, and the Security Update.
I walked away while downloading/updating and came back to a white/grey screen with "Illegal Instruction at %ssro: ff85e778 %ssr1: 00081010" blah blah... "type to reboot or type to shut down"...
I did the reboot... It rebooted and I got a blue screen with a small icon that flashed between a "sad mac" atop a file folder and a "?". I let it run thru that cycle for 5 minutes and shut it down. I rebooted and the same "Illegal Instruction" came up, so I just shut it down, then restarted to get my install cd in, then restarted and tried booting from disk...
I get nothing now. No matter what I do, my iBook chimes up, spins up, but the screen is black.
    HELP!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    Here's a place to start:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1573?viewlocale=en_US
Try the resets and see if they help. Then see if you can boot from your install CD. If you succeed, navigate to Disk Utility and see if you can repair your boot drive.
Does your iBook still have its original hard drive? If so, it could be beginning to go south, and that could be the underlying reason why things have gotten messed up.
    Good luck!

  • NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction using Windows XP Firefox 8.0.1 (IE8 does not cause this error)

I receive the error every time I turn on and off my pc and then start Mozilla Firefox. The problem does not happen if I use IE8.
I have gone to the control panel and removed Firefox 8.0.1 and then downloaded a new version and installed. I still experience the issue.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in compatibility mode.<br />
You can open the Properties via the right-click context menu of the Firefox desktop shortcut and check that in the "Compatibility" tab.<br />
Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.<br />

  • Unfindable Illegal Instruction

    Hello everyone,
I'm back with another error I can't seem to solve by myself, even with help from my friends. I had a few free days so I tried to fix the cairo problems I faced earlier when trying to incorporate it into DWM. I decided to start from scratch, which went relatively easy this time. However, it seems like I either missed something or did something wrong, because upon execution I get a segfault  when I compile normally or an illegal instruction when I compile with -g.
The thing is, if I create a diff between my cairo code as it is now and as it was a few weeks ago, I don't see anything different that can cause this. Further more, if I checkout the older code and run that, it works. I have pinpointed the issue to be the creation of the cairo xlib surface on line 22 in drw.c, but I have also verified (via printf) that this function is run through perfectly fine before crashing. Actually, it gets through the whole setup() function (starting on line 1608 in dwm.c) and even draws the bar at least once before bailing out on me. Also, after a fresh boot it usually works fine but a second attempt triggers the illegal instruction.
The code base I started out from (which is in my master branch on github, see below) works fine, but again a diff between these two code bases does not show anything strange. I tried to compile cairo with symbol lookup enabled (because gdb only shows ???, as does valgrind), but I need a package I can not find and trying to build cairo with tracing crashes during compiling.
I'm completely baffled by this and I have no clue how to continue. I know I could just pick up the old code, but then I won't learn anything
The cairo code can be found inside the cairo branch: https://github.com/Unia/dwm/tree/cairo
The "normal" code can be found inside the master branch: https://github.com/Unia/dwm
The diff files between my old and my new cairo code can be found here: https://gist.github.com/Unia/24e26092b416c0bb79de
The diff files between my master and cairo branch can be found here: https://gist.github.com/Unia/7033ffc4a47be5d0cdda
Thanks in advance for any help!

I compile my cairo dwm with -g, start Xephyr like this:
Xephyr -ac -br -noreset -screen 800x600 :1 &
Then I start dwm like so:
    DISPLAY=:1.0 gdb ./dwm
And I let gdb do it's thing by typing "run". When I get the segfault, I type "bt" and get the following output:
Program received signal SIGILL, Illegal instruction.

==2581== 1. Your program has a bug and erroneously jumped to a non-code
