ILLU CS3 CMYK Colors print wrong from placed layered psd, flattened ok. Why?

Hi all,
I searched the help, faq, kb and forum. No success, so I hope someone out there has some advice for me.
Environment:
Illustrator 13.0.2 (CS3), Photoshop 10.0.1 (CS3) on WinXP SP2, color management enabled (same settings in each CS3 app), printing on calibrated Xerox DC250 (PS-RIP), ISO Coated simulation profile.
The problem:
When placing a cmyk-psd with layers and embedded color-profile in AI 13 (cmyk-document) and printig, the colors do not look like they should. When I flatten the psd in Photoshop, place it again in AI, everything's fine. But why?
On screen, every psd looks the same.
When I place the same PSD with layers in AI 12.0.0 (CS2), there's no problem with the colors.
Is there a need to flatten PSDs in AI13?
Thanks a lot for your help!
Ralf

> I've always thought that EPS is a paths-only format. It seems it can also contain raster graphics?
Nope, if you put a raster image into something, it stays raster in the EPS.
Try to save the file as a PDF and see if that works better. That is the preferred format for newspaper ads, and many places still refer to it as an EPS.

  • P1102 brand new (1 week old) prints wrongly from Power Point

When printing directly from PowerPoint a circle that is defined as all white filled witha white edge line, this shows correctly on screen but when printed, the edge line becomes black.
When printing the same using pdfFactory Pro and then printing on the P1102, the printing is correct.
So, the error is in the P1102 driver, being one week old (2014-03-20 purchase date, Sweden)
Have you corrected this error or will I have to buy another brand?
Our old laserjet 1018 does not produce this error but started printing badly after changing toner. So we bought
a new printer, which looks like  a bad decision.
    Any help out there?

    Hi zecharia,
The only thing I can think of at this point is to ensure the printer is set as the default printer in the control panel. I wonder if the program is using the wrong driver for the printer.
If the issue persists, I highly recommend calling HP. You said the printer is new, only a week old. HP printers have a 1 year manufacture warranty.
The number to call HP is 1-800-474-6836 for Canada and US, or you can Contact HP Worldwide.

  • Mac 10.6.8 is printing very light and washed out, however, the color prints fine from Safari and my husbands PC, help!

My Mac 10.6.8 has always printed great from Firefox to my Canon printer, but now the black and color is all washed out. I can print same page from Safari or my husbands PC and the page is great! What is going on! ?

    Other things to try:
Examine your specific version of Optima by going to Type menu > Find Font, clicking on the Optima font and choosing More Info (I think) and find the specific version number. See if you can uninstall the font and reinstall another Optima font with a different, preferably newer version number. There has (historically) been a bad version of Optima floating around for years. Maybe you have it.
Use a free utility like FontNuke or FontFinagler to get your Mac OS to reset its font plists. Sometimes that makes the OS feel better.
Use the built-in Disk Utility to repair file permissions. You never know.
Export your old document out to IDML and reopen that resulting idml file back into a new freshly written INDD file. This might remove internal database corruptions.
All these are chicken-soup things to try and they might be good for you.

  • Is there anything in the world wrong with "placing" a PSD file in CS5?

    Friends,
    EMERGENCY !
I need to know if there's anything wrong with "placing" ( + D) a PSD photograph in CS5??
I was using PNG, but Photoshop won't save as CMYK .png files.
I was using .tif files, but TIF files don't preserve transparency.
Therefore, can I just use .PSD files?  They seem to work just fine ...
    Help!  Thanks!

Since we're talking about InDesign CS5, there is a wrinkle.
    Dov Isaacs wrote:
    (1)     TIFF files certainly do preserve transparency. Make sure you select that option when saving TIFF.
And unfortunate pragmatic isue is that Photoshop CS6 changed the way it stores transparency in TIFF files, and it stopped saving obsolete legacy data. And InDesign CS5 (but not CS6) depended on that legacy data. So if you're using PS CS6 and ID CS5 (the subject here indicates ID CS5) and you care about transparency, it's not a good idea to use TIFF.
(Personally I would tend to want to use TIFF, if this were not the case.)
I think this "bug" got fixed in ID CS5.5 (#3073238), but I don't think it is fixed in CS6 CS5.
Edit: not fixed in CS5! Not "not fixed in CS6"

  • Why are printer managed color prints different from Photoshop managed color prints using the same color profile?.

I'm using Photoshop 13.0.1, Windows 7, to print images using custom color profiles made with an XRite colorimeter.  However, when I print the image using Printer Manages Color, it is not the same as Photoshop Manages the colors and selecting the Canon ICC profile that (Canon 7200 MP2) that is the same as the printer managed settings.  Why are these prints not the same if the same color profile is being accessed??

    Hi WA Veghe,
    >First: DO synchronize, makes sure you have the same profile settings and color mange settings.
I don't seem to be able to synchronize between CS4 (Photoshop) and CS3 (Indesign).
It seems I have to do without synchronizing..
    >I do not seem to find HOW you are diplaying images on you screen: with Soft proofing?
What happens if you soft proof in Photoshop and InDesign on screen: View > Proof colors. Do you proof with the same profiles, both simulate paper and black on?
I can simulate Proof Colors (working CMYK), but not simulate Paper, both in Indesign and Photoshop.
Problem is: SAME settings in Photoshop and Indesign BUT the image displayed in Photoshop is brighter and more saturated.
So which image should I correct after?
    thanks for all help

  • Purple hair! - colors printing wrong w/ iPhoto '08 and Canon MP780

I am trying to print some photos of my strawberry-haired daughter and her hair keeps coming out electric purple. It looks very Warhol, but I wasn't reallly going for that effect... Other dark bits in the pictures are coming out purple too.
This has only happened since upgrading to '08. I am still using 10.4.11. I looked for an updated driver on the Canon website, but the latest update is just for Leopard. I've tried printing through the file menu as well as the print button in iPhoto. I get a range of larger or smaller purple highlights, but can't seem to get it to come out without purple hair.
Any ideas? I don't know enough about tweaking settings randomly to get beyond where I've gotten (about a dozen tries with paper options, color sync vs. BJ Standard in Color Options, printing from a PDF).
    Thank you.

    Danika:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Have you tried cleaning the printer's nozzels with it's printer utility? That happened to me when one of the colors got plugged and the prints were not unlike you are experiencing.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Printing Issue: Colors print fine from Photoshop but washed out in Illustrator

I am having trouble printing from Illustrator.  The same image...whether cut and pasted, opened in, or using the swatch created....prints differently in Photoshop and Illustrator.  I need to use this specific color (for branding purposes) and it prints fine in Photoshop but washed out and grey-ish in illustrator.
I've made sure the color settings are the same (in bridge) and made sure all the print settings are the same.  It is the same color on the screen, and in detail, but the print output is clearly different.  Any help please??

If I print from Acrobat, everything is washed out and greyed -  both the PDF from Illustrator and the PDF saved from Photoshop.
I tried letting the printer decide and I tried set to illustrator - both washed out and greyed.
Here are my settings in illustrator:

  • Unable to Print pages08 with pictures to color printer

I am not able to print color pages08 documents containing photographs to my HP 4650 color Laser. I am not able to figure this out. The HP 4650 Color Laser has 128 MB's Ram and never gives me a problem with 20-25MB doc's or 50-60MB color photo files.
The pages file I can not print is a mere 7.6 MB's
Here's the steps I've taken in my investigation: resaved & remamed the file, resaved & renamed on a different drive w/200 GB's free space. Tossed out my pages08 preferences & restarted (Preferences>com.apple.iwork.Pages.plist), and repaired my colorSnyc profiles. After each/all of these I have no luck printing to my HP 4650 color Laser.
Next I created a 3.8MB pages08 test document with 4 pictures dropped into it from iPhoto6. This test file with 4 pictures is 3.7Mb's. Here's my consistent results
    I can print this document
    - directly from pages08 on my HP 4200 B&W Laser Printer (256MB ram)
    - from Preview as a "reduced file" size pdf (version 5 or lower)
I can not print this document to my HP 4650 color Printer
    - directly from pages - printer says "20 insufficient memory"
    - directly from Preview - printer says "20 insufficient memory
Next, I exported from iphoto6 the same 4 pictures (in original dimensions) to Photoshop & InDesign.
I can print this test document on my HP 4650 color
    - directly from Photoshop (.psd file size is 27.8MB)
    - directly from Indesign (.indd file size is 2.2MB)
Next, I used the "Template Choose">"Extreme"
    - OK printing template (as is) directly to HP color before & after saving
    - NO printing after adding 4 different pics using iphoto6
    - NO printing after adding 3 different pics using iphoto6
    - NO printing after adding 2 different pics using iphoto6
    - NO printing after adding 1 different pics using iphoto6
What's up?, there seems to be some hidden printing preference here that is limiting me to adding anything to a pages document, or pages is not handling the information properly.
Any more ideas I can follow? I've never experiences an insufficient memory issues in any other applications with any other documents other applications.

I've replaced the HP printer driver and had no change, my pages08 documents with picture(s) added will still not print.
I can print the pages08 templates as they exist, but when I add or replace even one picture (using iPhoto) the document will not print to my HP Color printer yet will print on my HP B&W printer.
Additionally, I can add 10-20 more pictures and the B&W printer continues to print perfectly. HP claims this is an application program and not the trouble of their printer. I have to agree since only pages document with pictures is my culprit, every program and every massive size document I want to print
There seems as if an invisible limit exists that I surpass when I add a picture. Are there any preferences or settings I've missed, a cache I should clear?
Aside from upgrading to pages09, I hope you can assist with some helpful remedies, thank you.

  • Strange color blocks appearing in transparency layers

I'm getting random color blocks appearing in a layered PSD file. Doesn't appear when the same file is opened on another machine. Color blocks move and change location and density. I created the original file and have worked in it previously (not today) Almost looks like video card issues. But doesn't happen in other programs besides photoshop? Anyone had similar issues?
Running CS2 on a Dual 2.3 G5 with 4 gb memory. Plenty of HD space.

This is the boilerplate text I use in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please
    cease and desist immediately
in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files.
Working across a network is not supported.
    See:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/322391.html
    Copy the
CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work. It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does
not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

  • Layered .psd artifacts in .pdf from Illustrator

    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/852893?tstart=0
I'd posted this in the PhotoShop forums, and Chris recommended I post it here.
We placed layered .psd files onto vector art in Illustrator, then saved it as a high-res .pdf.  Sometimes we get CMYK edges around the .psd file, and they weren't in the original art.  Saving the .psd as a .tif and replacing it in Illustrator fixes this.  Any way we can get the .psd file to work without getting the edges?
    Thanks for any feedback!

No--it's a small fuzzy outline around the layered .psd file (not an effect in Illustrator, but I was referred to the Illustrator forum when I posted this in the PhotoShop forum).
It appears in the .pdf, and it's generated when I make the .pdf in Illustrator.
Here's the link to the original thread--that'll show pics of the effect:

  • Converting from pantone to cmyk color mode in Indesign CS3??

I am working on a business card for a customer, I am using Adobe Indesign CS3.
I use an outside company for the printing job called 4over (4over.com) and they require you use their cmyk pdf print engine so they can do the job properly... Basically to break it down: I am in Indesign CS3, I choose Print, and as the printer I choose their "4over pdf cmyk print engine" so the colors do not convert and the color doesnt change when they use their printers.
4over is telling me my document is in pantone color mode, they can see the pantone color 371C, but not the cmyk values.
How do I change from pantone color mode to cmyk color mode???
if anyone can help me please. I would really appreciate it.
I attached the file I sent to 4over incase that helps anyone answer my question.
    Thank you,
    Brandon

Before exporting, in the swatch panel, select your Pantone colour, right click and select swatch options. Change the color type to Process and the color mode to CMYK.
If it's a business card and you showed the client a pantone swatch, know that you won't get the same colour results. There's a very useful Pantone book available that shows swatches side by side with CMYK values.

  • Colors from my screen to a customers printer are printing wrong

I run an online wedding invitation design business. I first create the digital files of the invitations in Adobe Illustrator CS5, then secondly I email the PDF file to my customers, and finally the customers are responsible for printing the invitations themselves. Some people print from a home computer, some have a local print shop print them (professional OR places like Staples and Office Max), and some upload the design to an online print service.
I use Adobe Illustrator CS5 and cmyk colors to create my file.
2 times this year I have run across a problem that I don't know how to fix. The customer says that when they print the PDF at home AND at a local print shop (Staples or otherwise), the colors are not right. Specifically, my Peach color was printing Brown for her, and my light Pink color was printing Tan for her.
The first file I sent her was a PDF that I created from Illustrator. I also imported the .ai file into my Photoshop Elements 5.0, and then saved it as a JPG and PSD. Those two printed the same results for her. She printed from home and from Staples. Both printed wrong.
Can someone tell me why this might be happening? I have made 250+ sales in the last 12 months, and this is only the second time it has happened.
    help!!!!

jdanek - Of the hundreds of sales that I've made, I've only had this color issue happen twice. As I stated before, I'm not a professional with Illustrator, so I'm not sure how to answer some of your questions.
I use CMYK in Illustrator CS5 but I don't know anything about what my "color settings" are or what my "PDF color settings" are. I know it's gotta be something pretty simple to figure out. Can you help give me some direction in that? If it helps, here's a screen shot of when I start to save a PDF.
Besides the screen shot showing my PDF settings, you can alos see my self-made set of "user defined" color swatches that I use in all of my designs (in the bottom folder set of swatches). This allows consistency in my designs, since my customers are able view a color chart in my online shop to pick the colors for their invitations.
You asked about giving proofs to my customers. To answer, yes I do. After I create their design in Adobe Illustrator CS5, I save the file as a PDF (as shown in the screen shot I provided) and email it to them.  I do the same thing once the design is approved; send them a PDF using the same settings in the screen shot shown.
Some customers print from their home printer, and some take the file to a local printshop of their choosing (kinkos, office max, staples, or other professional places, etc). I don't always know what printshop they take their files to. I've never had any special requests from the printshops. The file I send to the customer is the one that's used, no questions ever asked. I have no part or no knowledge of what those printshop printer's settings are. And I have no part or any knowledge of what type of paper they're printing on.
Sometimes customers upload thier design to online printers, like Vistaprint or Catprint. If that's the case, then I go online to the website and download an Illustrator template to do the designing in. Again, I use my own "user defined" color swatches and save the document with the same PDF settings in the screenshot.
    Does any of this help?

  • Epson R3000 printing wrong colors after Apple software update from 24th January

I updated the EPSON driver version 2.16 within the Apple Update. Now the colors are wrong. I restored Library\Printers\EPSON from Time Machine with date 18th January. But I have still the problem.

    Hi pilotmicha,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Try these troubleshooting steps if your printer is not behaving correctly:
Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
If the issue persists, try these additional steps:
Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again.  Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
Contact the printer vendor or visit their website for further assistance.

  • Automatically convert from RGB to CMYK color mode

I have over 900 barcodes provided in EPS format. When I open them in illustrator, they are coming in as an RGB color space file. I need them gray scale solid black in CMYK color mode. I can batch using actions to convert the artwork using "Edit Colors > Convert to Grayscale". However, the document color mode remains RGB. It appears, even after using "Convert to Grayscale", that the RGB color mode goofs up the placed .ai file in InDesign, treating it as RGB and seeing it as a mix of CMYK rather than the 100% black only it needs to be for proper sharp printing.
The actions pallet doesn't record converting the document color mode. Is there a way to automate that file conversion so they are all saved as CMYK rather than RGB, or am I stuck opening each of the 900+ files manually?

While recording the action, from the popup menu in the Actions Panel choose Insert Menu Item, then from the main menu choose File > Document Color Mode > CMYK color.
