Illustartor CS4 slow document

Hey everyone,
I'm having a problem with illustrator CS4. It's all working fine, but there is one document that's being very, very slow. It's a drawing containing of several layers. When I add a clipping mask, it suddenly is slow. When I remove it, it acts normal again. But I need the clipping mask!
I'm working on a Windows PC.

I have over 4TB of HDD in the machine in question and use one drive just for
capture another for rendering to and yet another for storing the material
and another for anything else etc I also have a separate system drive with
all the applications on it. They are all fast enough to run HD in real time
with no hiccups. I have no problem chucking enormous files about and
rendering from other software. Its only Premier CS4 that crawls. I have a
second boot on another drive with CS3 and that renders very fast in
comparison.

    ### Complete Problem Description ###
A test file is being used to do inserts into a schemaless XML DB. The file is inserted and then links are made to 4
different collection folders under /public. The inserts are pretty slow (about
15 per second and the file is small)but the xquery doesn't even complete when
there are 500 documents to query against.
The same xquery has been tested on a competitors system and it has lightening fast performance there. I know it
should likewise be fast on Oracle, but I haven't been able to figure out what
is going on except that I suspect somehow a cartesian product is the result of
    the query on Oracle.

  • ID CS4 slow after pasting text from MS Word

Each time I paste text from a Word document into my ID CS4 document, ID begins to run very slowly. I can't even type properly. Has anyone else seen this?
I have fixed this problem by copying all the text and pasting in the a new document (I thought the document was possibly corrupted). This fixed the problem, but it has happened multiple times now. Much of my information comes from engineers' word documents, so this is not convenient.

The best I can tell, it is related to the cross references, and that it happened after pasting was coincedental. It could have been that pasting made a cross referenced section move to another page, so it was trying to update.
The cross references are a little buggy:
EVERY time I create a cross ref from the cross ref menu (in the cross ref window), ID CS4 (with all patches) crashes. If I create them from the Text menu (at the top), it doesn't crash.
If you have a large number of cross refs in a doc, it becomes slow.
When slowness occurs, I have found that updating the cross refs and then resolving all errors in the cross ref window usually clears it up.

  • CS4 'my documents' folder change

    Hello helpful keyboard strokers,
Due to a change in servers at our Planetarium, I am now having troubles with CS4 PP and the AME.  It would appear that my computers' my documents' folder was located on the old server; when PP loads, it can't find it and makes a temp folder someplace else and then loads fine.  When I try to export into AME it attempts to start to encode, but then I get this message 'PProheadless Debug Event - PProheadless has encountered an error.
    [..\..\scr\directoryregistry.cpp-283]
So, simple question, hopefully, simple answer, how can I change the location of where CS4 is looking?  Our IT is taking it's sweet time with fixing all the glitches and I am low on the list.  I don't even remember picking 'my documents' when I installed CS4, but I guess I did.  What I would like is to change the location to one of my scratch disks; which makes more sense to me (avoiding the server location and time lag in access).
I can't seem to find where in CS4 to do this?  Should I re-install and change the location at that time or does any know of a quicker access path?
Thanks for any help or suggestions and I will continue to play cards until the IT guys answer my calls....
    Cam

    +1
I would like an answer to this question as well.  I simply want the Adobe folder OUT of "My Documents".
Thanks for any advice you can offer,
    0Scott

  • Deleting Links Ridiculously Slow – Document Specific

I've got one document that is worse than others in terms of removing links. It is a 52 page 4 color piece that just is a dog. The whole thing exports, saves and prints at the same rate as any other document, but when placing or removing links this thing just grinds. It is a medley of vector eps, raster eps, tiffs and psd. Regardless of what type when removing a link it takes my processor to 100.1% and 3 full minutes in order to remove the link.
I've round tripped the file through INX into INDD and back on multiple occasions and it still dogs out on links. I've resaved every single placed file to be a uniform color space and color profile. The document contains 2 font families in one clean suitcase.
InDesign when balling up on these links still uses just 500 mb of ram and I have plenty of ram to spare during this. It seems to balance back and forth between the cores on my machine evenly while this happens. I have ample hard disk space to spare and I am working with both the file and all placed links existing locally.
I've rebuilt prefs and the slowdown does not occur with the links are missing and I am working with just the proxy previews. This happens at the same rate in all three display settings.
Any guesses? My best guess is that it is the ghost of Claude Garamond coming back to enact revenge on me for my atrocities against type including, but not limited to, baseline shift, horizontal scaling and interchanging his beloved apostrophe with prime marks and inch marks.
    I'm on CS4 v6.0.4.578 Mac OS X 10.5.8 on a 2.8ghz Xeon with 4gb 667mhz ram for what that is worth.

If you really want to know, and have spare time for deeeep analysis, or as a hint to other trouble shooters around here
    Setup:
Clone your boot volume onto a spare firewire drive, or do a clean install there.
Reboot from the separate disk, unmount the original boot drive.
Install the optional Apple developer tools from the second DVD.
If you chose a clean install, also install a demo InDesign.
    Actual test:
Within /DeveloperApplications, there is a neat utility called "Instruments".
Choose the "File Activity" template instruments document.
Launche Executable or attach to running InDesign.
    Record
    Do your thing.
    Stop recording.
Click thru the instruments such as "Directory I/O", identify the major activity.
Position the triangle indicator of the top timeline accordingly, then clip the inspection range.
In the bottom of instruments window, choose the symbol with the stylized 4 cell table.
See the executed operations, and the actual file path arguments, to get an impression of the paths used. Reorder by path. Does anything stand out?
Just play around with instruments, it has plenty more options.
If you like this utility and can afford the extra disk space requirements of development tools, install them on your regular boot volume.
Similar information is also available from /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor (use the "Sample Process" tab), but that sample will not tell the actual path arguments.

  • PS CS4 Slow to open

I downloaded successfully, installed CS4, registered and it is activated. My only problem is it takes a LONG time for CS4 to open. From the time you double click the icon, it seems like it takes forever before the blue box pops up, then it takes longer than CS3 to get to the open program. As far as I can tell, I have the same settings for both programs but CS3 beats it hands down for speed to open. I am running 3 gb of memory, an Intel Quad 4 processor, and lots of disk space. I just can't figure our why it takes forever to open.

Photoshop should launch in under 20 seconds on a normal system (and 20 seconds was the slowest laptop we could find). We currently do not know of anything specific that would cause the launch of CS4 to be slower than CS3 - they should be about the same.
This could be due to several system factors: over aggressive anti-virus software, disk fragmentation, problematic drivers (CS4 initializes the GPU and CS3 didn't), or something we just don't know about yet (there's always some oddball driver or utility out there).

  • Photoshop CS4 'Arrange Documents' dialog

    Photoshop CS4:
Problem: With several documents open by going to the ‘Arrange Documents’ flyout dialog they could be arranged in the manner required - however the dialog flyout on my setup is blank - I can still arrange the documents by clicking on the appropriate blank area - but I would like to see the appropriate indicators back in the dialog - they used to be there!
Any pointers to a fix for this?
I have tried removing and restoring CS4 - this didn’t fix the problem.
    Thanks

  • CS4 Clone Tool NOT Multithreading and CS4 Slow on i7 965 Processor

I noticed for the first time that the new clone tool in CS4 is not using all of my processors on my new i7 965XE processor. In fact it uses only one processor and this makes it run incredibly slow. I have also noticed that CS4 in general is rather sluggish on this hardware which is supposedly one of the most powerful processors available. I am running the i7 965XE with 8GB of Ram and still find Photoshop rather slow. I would expect it to be super snappy on this hardware, perhaps I need to optimise settings somehow, does anyone have any suggestions or is CS4 not equipped to properly address the i7 processors yet???
    Any help appreciated.
My version of CS4 is 11.0

Mike, could you take a moment to reread your original post?
    "CS4 Clone Tool NOT Multithreading"
"In fact it uses only one processor and this makes it run incredibly slow."
Those are not observations and represent two direct conclusions, both of which are incorrect. The first conclusion is that the clone tool is not threaded for multiple processors (it is). The second conclusion is that the lack of threading is what makes the clone tool run slow on your system (almost certainly not the case).
Implied in your statements is a third conclusion: that using more processors makes things faster (rarely true). That is a common enough fallacy that I felt the need to offer a more detailed explanation to help you and other readers understand more about the issues involved. I tried to keep that explanation short and simple.
I gave you an alternate hypothesis (small clone area) that could have explained your observation, since you didn't provide enough details for us to rule that out.
I also gave you more information about what is going on under the hood to help you understand why you observed what you did on processor usage.
Then I pointed you to existing topics that offer a much more likely explanation for the slowdown you are seeing.
If you had described with the clone tool slowdown without the incorrect conclusions and without phrasing most of your post as accusations, you probably would have gotten useful help from other users more quickly. Even my first instinct was to ignore your post, but it sounded like you were confused, a bit angry, and needed some help.
I am sorry you read things into my post that I did not intend. I'm simply trying to help you understand what you observed, and find a solution to the problem you described.

  • Screen redraw CS4 SLOW

Many operations in CS4 are very slow compared to CS3, just a few examples:
    - moving parts of an image with the move tool.
    - transformations (not the final calculation, but the screen redraw while you drag the handles)
    - sreen redraw while you are turning on or off layers.
That is .... anything what needs the screen to be redrawn is much slower than in CS3. OpenGl does not have any influence on that behaviour.
It LOOKS very different with OpenGL on , but "under the hood" the screen redraw is still very slow. Zooming, panning etc. with OpenGL on is very good, but as soon as the screen has to be redrawn (because the content of the picture changes)it is as slow as with OpenGL off.
    So the question is:
Why is screen redraw with OpenGL OFF (!)so much slower than in CS3?
In CS3 it so fast that I can hardly follow it with the naked eye.
In CS4 I can see each tile while it is displayed. I`d say it takes about 0,5 sec for one complete screen redraw.
That slow screen redraw IMO is the reason why CS4 feels so slow.
Just compare it on your own system: turn OpenGL off and compare screen redraw to CS3. (BTW. CS3 was way slower in screen redraw than CS2, but you only see that on a slow machine).
    My system is a Q6600, Geforce 8600GT with 512MB, 4G RAM, Vista 32bit.
Since screen redraw is very slow with OpenGL OFF it can`t be graphics driver problem.
Another annoyance ist the following (with OpenGL ON):
Lets assume I change something in a picture at a certain zoom level (a brush stroke, curves, a certain filter....whatever)...and then go to another zoom level (zoom in or out) then I see the picture in its previous state (that is before the brush stroke, curves.....whatever) for a fraction of a second before the screen updates. Very annoying!

Just got of the phone to Adobe Support after 1 hour of messing around and was left with the advice " put a message on the forum to let Adobe know there is a problem" Thats what I thought I had just done!!  HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM!!!
I have  a Mac Pro - Quad-Core Intel Xeon etc etc etc.... The screen re draw is woeful and the bigger the file the worse it gets. As far as fixes to prefs is concerned, been there done that. Jump though hoops with the Adobe tech and still no fix. Looks like I'm heading back to good old reliable CS3.

You can speed up the clone tool by clicking on the top panel stamp icon. It opens a dialogue box. Uncheck "Show Overlay". Unfortunatly with every new image you open, i think you have to uncheck it.

    Hi,
