Illustration from Photoshop to Illustrator

How do you get a Photoshop illustration into Illustrator without it being pixelated in Illustrator

Is the Photoshop illustration made of pixels or vectors? if it's pixels then you'll probably need to run it through Live Trace in Illustrator.

  • Can't export an EPS file from Photoshop CS5 and open in Illustrator CS5.

    I'm on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5
I am making DVD covers for print. The barcodes for the DVD covers have to be done in Illustrator. But the original designs are done in photoshop including the text. For years this hasn't been a problem. Right before adding the barcodes I create an EPS file from photoshop, open that file in Illustrator and all my text is automatically coverted to perfect crisp clean vectors, viola! I add the barcodes and export the PDF for the printers.
But now I can't open my EPS files in Illustrator CS5 even though I'm exporting them the same way I always have from Photoshop CS5. Illustrator says... "The operation cannot complete because of an unknown error." --> Note it does not give an error number after this warning like I see it does for so many other people.
I have been trying to fix this for over 10 HOURS spanning 2 days! I'm infuriated I can't get help from Adobe on this and have read all the forums and don't see my problem listed anywhere.
    I've tried:
    - Deleting the .plist file and the Settings folder & resetting my permissions
    - Uninstalling and Reinstalling Illustrator
    - Turning off all other applications
    - Creating more disk space on my hard drive (even though I have 200gb available)
    - Restarting the computer
    - Disabling my Font book and still I can't open the EPS file
I thought maybe it's possible it's the font I'm using Fontesque OT so I even tried converting text to objects prior to exporting the EPS file from photoshop to illustrator and turning off my font book, but still it won't open. And if I open the PSD directly in Illustrator, text comes out a bit fuzzy in the PDF I export.
If anyone can provide any solutions I would be so grateful! I'm at my wits end here, this should have taken under an hour to do and now it's ruining my entire weekend. I'm completely panicked because I was suppose to have these to my client over the weekend so they could turn them in for Print frist thing on Monday morning and of course Adobe provides no chat support or phone support after 7pm on weekday or on the weekend which is when this all started.

I never even thought of reinstalling photoshop, but I think this was a font issue. I'd never saved an EPS with Fontesque OT Regular enabled, only Fontesque OT Bold. Somehow I think the font was causing the problem because ridding the font from the equation allowed me to open the EPS file.
After 12 HOURS of trying different things I found a WORK AROUND...
    I had to:
    - Select the Text in Photoshop (with Fontesque OT enabled)  --> Select Create Work Path --> Covert to Shape on each of the text items
    - Save EPS file out of Photoshop
    - Disable Fontesque OT font in Font Book
    - Then open EPS in Illustrator add in my Barcodes and export the PDF
(the barcodes have to be added in Illustrator because they need to be pure 100% black with no CMYK color in them. You can't save them out of Photoshop that way, only Illustrator, otherwise I would have made my pdf straight out of photoshop like any other normal human
This work around is the only way I could get the EPS files to open in Illustrator and still have the text remain super crisp like a vector.
NOTE to others in the future about crisp text from Photoshop to Illustrator:
    - Simply "converting to shape" did not preserve the vector. You have to Select Create Work Path --> then Covert to Shape on each of the text items (with the font enabled) for this to work and preserve the crispness of the text. Even creating "smart object" did not truly preserve my vectors or the text crispness in the EPS file once I imported it into Illustrator.
DrStrik9 thank you SO MUCH for trying to help me. You did give me ideas that helped me figure out the workaround and also helped me feel not so alone as I struggled through this. I'm going to follow up with your other suggestions about reinstalling photoshop and also checking my RAM, etc. But I just want to that you so so so SOOOO much for all your time and consideration in this matter. I hope you have a wonderful amazing week ahead and that someone does something very nice and thoughtful for you too

  • Having a problem moving a text document from Photoshop to Illustrator.. Won't let me edit the text

    Hi there,
I'm a complete technophobe so the answer to this could be quite obvious. I had to create a text using photoshop because of the inside of the text... i.e using a lobster font and it was pink glitter inside it so to give a girly effect.. It's for a college asignment.
I have to use illustrator CS6 to put that text on a b/ground I already made in Illustrator but the .psd doc won't let me edit it in illustrator, it's almost like a PDF. Help!
I hope it's not too confusing to understand, thanks in advance.

    Erica,
is there a simpler way of explaining that?
And I feared it was too easy to understand.
You may, in front of the overall background (which you may lock or hide):
    1) Create a background with the appearance you wish to apply to the letters, such as a solid cpolour, a gradient or other clolour transition, and some pink glitter in front of it, you may Group all this for convenience; and you may use raster artwork (maybe from Photoshop) if you like;
    2) With the Type Tool create the live Type on top of 1), you may move and size it to fit (roughly);
    3) Select 1) and 2) and Object>Clipping Mask>Make; 2) will become the (invisible) Clipping Path showing the parts of 1) that are behind it and hide the rest.
As mentioned, you may Direct Select 1) or 2) and edit or move them about relative to the background and each other.

  • File displaying different from Photoshop to Illustrator

I have a simple chalkboard background I made in Photoshop and I'm importing into Illustrator. My issue is the file displays completely different from Photoshop to Illustrator. See image below.
I've had this happen to other files but this one is so incredibly different, I can't understand what's happening and I can't manage the design with it being this different. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Rachel

Thanks again Monika. I can't figure this out. The color management is all synchronized among all my Adobe applications. Yes the file is in layers and when I view the JPG in Photoshop, it looks as it should. It's only when I bring it into Illustrator does it look like that. I opened up a new Illustrator doc and placed the same JPG (as well as dragged the PSD file directly from the Photoshop window into Illustrator) and it looks better and more like it should. My other doc was a new doc too so I'm not sure what happened. At any rate, I can't explain what happened and I'm just hoping it doesn't happen again.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Print materials from Photoshop instead of Illustrator

    Hi all,
I occasionally have to print signage, and usually  "design in Photoshop> import graphics into Illustrator> replace text in Illustrator> save as PDF".
I just designed a 300dpi effects heavy image, and am wondering about the ability to save from Photoshop without having to mess with Illustrator. I've seen mention of "exporting in vector format" and it is 300dpi.
= Is my work-flow the most efficient way to do it?
= Can I essentially save/export a PDF from Photoshop that will keep the text vector and print as it would if exported from Illustrator?
Your advice and input is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Lands

For the first question I think it is not efficient. For efficiency I would either 1) Use only Illustrator or 2) Use only Photoshop or 3) Do your design in Illustrator and import into Photoshop. The last option probably depends on the subject matter of the document, but still the output options from Photoshop are preferred by some over Illustrator.
Question 2: You can get high quality PDF output from Photoshop. Below is a small portion of a pdf file created by Photoshop and shown in Acrobat. It is being shown at 2400% magnification and shows 30 pt vector text and portions of two circles. The circle on the right is a simple pixel rendering and the circle on the left is a vector shape - the difference is evident.
If you work in Photoshop alone I would suggest starting with two pieces of information to create your initial working document - the number of pixels per inch (not printer dots/inch) you think you need and the size of the desired printed document - multiply them. If you wanted 500 pixels/inch and a 6" x 4" print then set your photoshop document to 3000 x 2000 pixels (minimum). Also, use vector elements in your document wherever possible.

  • Placed bitmaps in Illustrator from Photoshop have different colour breakdown?

When I place a bitmap in illustrator from Photoshop the colour breakdown changes. In photoshop, it could be set up using a 100% Solid black using CMY 0% and K100% but when I place this in illustrator the breakdown changes to say C:78.89%, M:80.45%, Y:88.90% K:90.45%.
Does anyone know why this happens and how to prevent it?
    Thanks!!

You cannot read the exact color values of a placed bitmap in Illustrator, you have to open the imaeg in photoshop. Never use SHIFT eyedropper if you desire color accuracy.
To prove this to yourself, you can use seperations preview to verify there is no CMY in your placed image, or print seperations to a laser printer.
Below are the values I get using shift eyedropper.
But look there is no CMY.

  • How to use imported paths from Photoshop/Illustrator as motion guides

    Hi folks,
I've been raking the internet with no success for an answer to my question, but I've had no luck so far.
What I'm hoping to achieve animation wise is to have a shape move around a set path that was created in Photoshop. The reason being, it's a very specific shape (near enough a square but with curved corners and a chunk missing out of one of the sides), and I used the paths feature in Photoshop to create it and stroke the path for the smoothest possible effect. What I'd ideally like to do is import the same path I used to create the shape into Flash Professional CS6 and then use that same path to guide a small symbol around the edge of the square.
So far, I've worked out how to apply motion to a symbol through basic tweens, and then I can draw out a line using the pencil tool and apply that to the tween so it follows the pencil line instead of just going from point A to point B. The problem is, this looks awful...I'm not good enough with a mouse to create absolutely perfect shapes freehand, so I just want to be able to use the Photoshop path as my motion guide instead of having to make another one from scratch.
I've looked around for various importing methods, the most success I've had is exporting the paths to an Illustrator file, and then importing the Illustrator file into Flash directly. However, I have NO idea where these paths go when they're imported, or how to access them. If I import them to the stage, they seemingly disappear before I've even seen them, and if I import them to the library they just aren't there.
I could also do with a brief description of how paths work in Flash - I'm familiar with the Photoshop layout, what with the paths appearing in a panel next to the layers one (makes perfect sense to me, as you can just switch between the two panels to view whatever you want). I just don't understand how they work in Flash and what I should be looking for....
Many thanks in advance for any help!
    Todd

I had a play around with some variations of this. What I can't grasp is why Flash won't recognise my shape layer as a motion path. I've tried breaking it down, that doesn't work... I traced it narrowly in Photoshop and imported it as a thin line with a gap (so essentially a line with two ends), and it comes into Flash as a bitmap or something of that sort. I found an option that traces the bitmap, and appears to convert it into a shape layer...I've managed to find the optimal settings so the line is joined all the way through apart from the start and end points. The only thing is, Flash seems to not even notice this as a guide layer when I apply it to the symbol I'm trying to animate. It just doesn't even notice it's there. The object moves straight from point A to point B in a straight line, the guide layer does nothing to adjust the motion... Is it not possible for the traced line to act as a motion guide? It's a shape, it is a single line with a start point and an end point, and there are no other instances of anything else in the layer - just the line and nothing else.
This seems way more difficult than it should be...I'm sure Adobe could have integrated a MUCH easier system for importing paths from Photoshop that actually exist in Flash rather than disappearing into some abyss instead!
Here is a screenshot of what I'm working with: http://gyazo.com/4c1046767e1ee8bf99f65751b9ba81b8
The long black oval is the shape I'm trying to animate. I've tried applying tweens to it while it's in shape form and while it's in every different symbol form, all to no avail.
The black line is what I'm trying to use as the guide. Having looked online, people seem to be able to just use the "paste in place" option and it somehow knows exactly what they mean and animates around the line perfectly. I tried that and it didn't work (no surprise there), and then I tried the motion guide layer setup and it also didn't work. I'm not sure if tracing a bitmap into a shape layer somehow removes any possibility of the line being recognisable as a line or something...could that be the case?
Is there a simple way to turn a shape layer (in this case the black line) into a motion guide that I'm missing? I thought just turning the layer into a guide layer would do the trick, but obviously not :/

  • Printing Issue: Colors print fine from Photoshop but washed out in Illustrator

I am having trouble printing from Illustrator.  The same image...whether cut and pasted, opened in, or using the swatch created....prints differently in Photoshop and Illustrator.  I need to use this specific color (for branding purposes) and it prints fine in Photoshop but washed out and grey-ish in illustrator.
I've made sure the color settings are the same (in bridge) and made sure all the print settings are the same.  It is the same color on the screen, and in detail, but the print output is clearly different.  Any help please??

If I print from Acrobat, everything is washed out and greyed -  both the PDF from Illustrator and the PDF saved from Photoshop.
I tried letting the printer decide and I tried set to illustrator - both washed out and greyed.
Here are my settings in illustrator:

  • Draging images from photoshop to illustrator

    Hello,
I am attempting drag images made in photoshop cs5 in illustrator cs5 on a mac. However when I do this any transparent portions of the photoshop image fill with white. Is there any way to keep that from happening?

As emmysue32 wrote you can also used advanced tiffs or transparrent ftiffs as they are sometimes known which Illustrator CS 4 and later support which also means they be placed perserving thier layers as with .psd files.
However, at least for Illustrator it is not necessary to check the Preservve Transparency option as long as youy tell the diting application to wrtie layers.

Placed in Illustrator CS 5.02 withoutht he transparency otpion checked

  • File with mask from photoshop placed in illustrator

Im having trouble placing an image from photoshop that has a transparent/foreground mask applied to it but when it is placed in illustrator the mask is not transparent and the full photoshop picture is visible.  How do I take an image from photoshop with transparency around edges and have it show up looking the same in illustrator? Is this possible?

What file format is your photoshop file, .psd, .tif, & .pdf all support transparency.
Whatever you see in checkerboard pattern in photoshop should be transparent when placed in Illustrator. Did you use a layer mask as I have on Group 1 layer set.

  • Preserving Transparency from Photoshop CS3 to Illustrator CS3

    Hello all,
I'm trying to figure out how to preserve an image's transparency between Photoshop and Illustrator. Both apps are CS3.
In the broader design context, I'm trying to move an isolated wine bottle from Photoshop into an Illustrator document. I'd like the neck of the bottle to overhang a series of dotted lines in the Illustrator document.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

double-click the background layer, so that it becomes Layer 0, or whatever you want to name it. Background layers are not capable of transparency, so you have to make the layer into a non-background layer.
A more flexible way to do this; instead of *deleting* the area you want to be transparent, while the selection is active, click the "make layer mask" button at the bottom of the layers panel. This is non-destructive to your original image, and can easily be edited or tweaked in the future.
I highly recommend learning to use layer masks while you are learning to use layer transparency. I'll bet Doug would recommend this as well.

CS6  Just upgraded my mac to Yosemite but now can't import graphics from photoshop to illustrator.  Does anyone have a solution?

My advice to you is, if you can, drop back to Mavericks. You will have better luck since CS4 is not supported (nor are CS5 or CS5.5) on Yosemite. The other alternative is to uninstall the entire suite, run the cleaner tool and reinstall completely from the original discs or a new download. Be prepared for other fun stuff as well.

  • Browse in Bridge from Photoshop CC 2014 fails to open Bridge and wants to install new version

Hey community!  I found a few similar posts, but couldn't find much of a resolution.
Last night I was working in PS CC 2014 and all was well.  Used Browse from Bridge in PS.  Everything is working fine all night long.  Get up this morning, return to work, click browse in Bridge, and Creative Cloud desktop client pops up and says something about installing a new version of Bridge and will get rid of my old version.  The first time I just though it was an update, so I said sure, install the new version.  Then, CC wanted to update a few other apps (PS being one of them), so I closed down everything, and let it update everything while I got a cup of coffee.  Came back and it looked like everything was finished updating.  So I went back to work.  Same thing happens again when I click browse in Bridge.  I tried going directly to Bridge's launch icon and THAT at least opened the application.  It was still open to the same folder I had been using the night before.  I double-clicked on the PSD I was supposed to be working on, and then Illustrator pops up and is trying to open the PSD.
***Ok, so I fixed the association problem with Illustrator trying to open the PSD.  I uninstalled my older version of PS CC last night after I was done working, which apparently broke the "file associations" in Windows.  I just had to go tell Windows to open PSD files with PS CC 2014 (even though 2014 has been installed since it's release and that's all I've been using)***
Still can't get around the Browse in Bridge issue.  It is not a real big deal TO ME where I click to open Bridge, but it does seem like a bug that needs fixing.
    Thanks!

I have the same issue when trying to Browse in Bridge from Photoshop CC 2014. When I click "Browse in Bridge" in Photoshop CC 2014, the Creative Cloud desktop client window opens up and asks "Are you sure you want to install this version of Bridge"?
Like you, I also thought it was an update so I clicked' "Yes, install this version" option.
Bridge will launch from the dock icon I have set up, but not from within Photoshop CC 2014.
Any solutions to this bug anyone?

  • Is it possible to export Vector Smart Objects as vector SVG files from Photoshop CC 2014?

I have Vector Smart Objects copied from Illustrator and pasted into Photoshop. I would like to export them as vector SVG files (using Generator or Extract Assets). I can add the .svg extension to the layer and actually export an SVG just fine. The problem is any SVG I have exported have all been raster images. It defeats the purpose of having that as an option as far as I'm concerned.
I remember watching and listening to keynotes and other speakers at Adobe MAX 2014 who said it was so powerful and amazing to create SVG files from Photoshop. If we're still exporting raster SVG files from Photoshop...that's not very impressive or exciting--especially since this era of modern web development benefits greatly from using vector SVG files.
I understand that Shape Layers can be exported as vector SVG files but that seems very limiting. I also realize that users can create some impressive vectors in Photoshop, but that is not optimal. Illustrator is a better tool for creating vectors and I normally use Photoshop and Illustrator side-by-side. I know that vector SVG files can be exported from Illustrator but that isn't as user friendly and convenient as utilizing Photoshop > Generator > Reflow.
My idea was to create my assets in Illustrator, paste them into Photoshop as Vector Smart Objects, set up my layout, and then use the Generator/Reflow method or Extract Assets to get a new web design started.
Maybe I misunderstood what the speakers at Adobe MAX had said. Perhaps it's just user error and I'm just missing something simple (it happens).
Photoshop CC 2014 notes the following under Help > System Info:
    Adobe Photoshop Version: 2014.2.2 20141204.r.310 2014/12/04:23:59:59 CL 994532  x64
    Operating System: Windows 8.1 64-bit
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance for your time.

Not quite the same, but have a look at the new Libraries feature that came with 2014.2.2  I just tried it, and dragging a vector object into a library I created in Photoshop, was there in Illustrator.  This happens without having to close and reopen Illustrator.  Just use the drop down at the top of the Libraries panel (in Illustrator) to find your custom, or job specific library.
