Illustrator 10 Reinstall

I had to reinstall Illustrator 10 on a new PC running Vista. It loaded fine but when I open Illustrator a window pops open... runs for a few seconds then closes. Repeated this process several times.. no luck opening.
What have I done wrong?
Bill

Bill,
You may consider whether you may have a corrupt/bad font. And you may try the (other) things on the following list (corrupt fonts is described in Item 1) in step 5).
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
Even more seriously, you may:
6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Can't get Illustrator to reinstall on my computer

I have Adobe Illustrator CS2 on my computer - computer locked up - I tried to reinstall but Illustrator just says "The application Illustrator has unexpectedly quit." Never had a problem in the past reinstalled any software. Do think its a virus?

If you want to get renewed attention to your unanswered question, it's best not post it all over again. Just write "bump" or ask for continued help in a new post. That way you'll avoid having two threads running simultaneously.
Maybe someone else will come along with a more direct solution, but what I might try to do just as a general rule of thumb in this situation, is first to uninstall Illustrator completely, then re-install it. Adobe CS versions are known to be very fussy, in general, about copying and/or re-installing.
Here are directions for manually uninstalling. They say you need to pay special attention to the possibility of uninstalling components that are used for other Adobe applications.
It's definitely not a virus. There are no OS X viruses out there. And this is not virus like behavior. If you are unable to get help here, you might want to contact Adobe (although their tech support is not known to be exactly marvelous.)
Also, don't delete any files directly. I would use the "Move to trash" option, so you can replace something later if you find you need it.

  • Out of memory message in Illustrator. Now Illustrator won't launch. Can I reinstall?

I was working on a very detailed illustration in Illustrator and got an out of memory message. I ended up forcing Illustrator to quit. Now Illustrator won't launch.  In the Adobe Creative Cloud, can I uninstall Illustrator and reinstall without having to pay extra?

    Kathy,
I believe you should reinstall using the full three step way:
Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

  • Illustrator CS4 and CS3 crashing on two different mac's - can not save or print

We have two Macs running 10.5.6, with CS4 and CS3 installed. Both systems seem to be crashing today when trying to save, print, etc any file. Some files that were created in CS3 that are older seem to be opening and saving. But anything I know was worked on yesterday are having issues on both systems.
    Anyone have any ideas?
I have tried trashing the preferences, and also booting in safe mode and still get crashes.

I just tried an uninstall of Illustrator - then reinstall. Did not work either. Here is the report I am getting if anyone is interested:

  • Illustrator CS5 just won't stay open

I have looked all over the forums and elsewhere to find a solution to this, but so far, I haven't been able to resolve it. I noticed many other people have had this problem, and it was resolved in many ways, but none of those ways worked for me. This is the trial downloaded from adobe.
    My info:
    Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit
    4 gb ram
    AMD athlon IIX2 Processor
Both Photoshop and Illustrator load and run very fast on my laptop, so performance really isn't an issue.  I've never had this problem with photoshop.
Illustrator cs5 worked fine since last night. After working on a file, I restarted and Illustrator loads and opens, but doesn't stay open. It closes about 3-5 seconds after it opens, so I can only assume it crashed without any error message.
The starting logo never completely loads all of the font list. It usually gets to about 80% and then opens and closes automatically.
    So far, i've tried:
uninstalling illustrator and reinstalling it -- did this 3 times
using the cleaning tool to completely remove cs5 and reinstall it
    deleting the illustrator profile
temporarily removing the fonts in C:/Windows/Fonts ... some fonts could not be moved due to the fact they were in use/system fonts
updating illustrator CS5 to "fix" the bugs ... it doesn't seem to improve anything
Looking in the event viewer for errors, I found this:
Faulting application name: Illustrator.exe, version: 15.0.1.399, time stamp: 0x4c57c1d9
Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000

    Faulting module path: unknown
    Report Id: 7b1d928a-dfd0-11df-ab15-705ab6e1e86d
not sure if any of that has to do with why it crashes.
nothing worked. The strange thing is, if I open an .EPS or .AI file with illustrator, illustrator will stay open as long as my mouse is over a context menu. If i'm quick enough, I can open .EPS files in illustrator and then save them as .AI files, but as soon as I close the menu, illustrator quits.
So, this is incredibly fustrating. I have to do a vector project in illustrator and obviously can't ... i've been quite desperate in trying to find other vector programs, but i'd rather not need to learn a new program when I can use one I already have.
Does anyone know how to fix illustrator and keep it open?   how do I temporarily remove all the fonts from illustrator? I am assuming that because it never completely loads the font list at startup, its a font issue. But I haven't installed or modified any new fonts lately.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I did as you suggested and removed my prefererences and workspaces. It still closes.
Also, I do not use adobe acrobat, it isn't installed on my computer. I have no issues hovering over the menus in AI -- hovering over the menus and opening them is the only thing that keeps AI open. As soon as I take my mouse off the menu, AI closes.
The only way to keep AI open is to interact with the menus. Any dialog box keeps it open. As soon as you close the menu or dialog, AI closes as well.

  • Illustrator 17.0.2 won't upgrade to 17.1.0

I'm trying to upgrade illustrator 17.0.2 to 17.1.0 on a mac with 10.8.5
Everytime I try from adobe application manager, I am told that another instance of adobe application manager is running and to close it. I have checked the activity monitor and I only find the 1 instance running that is the one I am working in.
If I try from the Adobe creative cloud location, I am told to shutdown any instance of adobe application manager; however, activity monitor shows no instances running.
I have rebooted several times and run this first, I have also removed illustrator and reinstalled. The only other adobe products installed are Acrobat X1, flash, adobe air, and adobe media player.
I have tried to find the patch on the adobe site, but there I can only find patches through 16.x

Again, lots of threads on this.
In short, don't rename or move the application, otherwise software update won't recognise it.
Put it back to where it should be, and call it what it should be, and software update will see it.

  • Adobe illustrator CS crashing

Ok today when I went to use illustrator it crashed and would not open so I restarted the the power book and it still would not open.. so then I uninstalled illustrator and reinstalled it and it is still crashing...
Anyone have any idea of how I can fix this illustrator problom?
    powerbookG4 and emac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

supposed to be the illustrator.plist file somewhere.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/331889.html
is there in: user folder - library - preferences - "Adobe Illustartor Settings" folder?
if there is one, just move it to desktop and restart, see what happens (those are temp files anyway)
you also could try to create new user account in System Preferences and try to open Illustrator after login in as new user.
if it runs under new user, could be some conflict in original user setup.
if it's not working under new user, try deleting and re-installing Illustrator.
applications sometimes quit when there is conflict with other software or settings.

  • Illustrator CS5 crashing on exit

Illustrator CS5 keeps crashing on every exit. I am hoping someone can identify a more appealing solution than the workaround I found.
Steps I take to reproduction the problem (with or without creating or opening documents between):
    Launch Illustrator
    Exit Illustrator
    Symptoms
Once the Illustrator application window and taskbar icon disappear, a message window pops up, "Adobe Illustrator CS5.1 has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution." The only option is to click the "Cancel" button. The window pops up again. So, I click the "Cancel" button again.
The following errors are added to the Windows application error logs (note the two different exception codes):

    Efforts to Remedy
    Functioning or inconclusive workarounds:
Launch Illustrator from a new Windows user account
I got this one to work. But, I lose a lot of personal settings.
    "Verify" Illustrator
Member usgrant7 posted a solution (#5 in the discussion "Illustrator error upon closing") that worked for him/her. But, the instructions were too vague and unspecific to follow with any success. I haven't had success so far with contacting that member.
    Common solutions having no effect:
    Reboot the computer
Uninstall Illustrator and reinstall (also tried removing various Illustrator settings folders between)
Granti full control permissions to Illustrator application folder (and all subfolders)
Launch Illustrator with administrative priviledges ("as Administrator")
Launch Illustrator in various compatibility modes

    Finally, A FIX !!!!!!!!
If you are reading this for your own fix, you likely have TeamViewer installed.
"What?!", you say. "How on Earth did he know I have that on my computer?"
As odd as it sounds, TeamViewer with it's Quick Connect feature is the culprit.
Explanatory Hypothesis (Here's What I Think is Going On)
Since Adobe likes to be different even on a PC, they add their own computer code to handle the application's window dressing instead of standard Windows GUI architecture code. Notice the title bar looks different than that of any non-Adobe software installed on your computer. They decided to re-invent the wheel, so to speak.
What I believe is going on is that while TeamViewer is running, it monitors for windowed processes (those you see as a window on the screen). And, for almost every one of these processes, TeamViewer adds a little button near the standard minimize-window button. This little button being added is called a Quick Connect button, a TeamViewer feature that let's you share your application's window with another computer running TeamViewer.
So, I believe that the Quick Connect button is causing the clash between Adobe's insistance on a non-Windows look and TeamViewer's assumption that every software publisher would use Windows GUI.
    Solution
“Yeah, yeah. That’s all good. So, how do I fix it?”
    Here's the skinny:
    Open the TeamViewer window.
From the menu bar, select "Extras" and "Options".
    Select the "Advanced" tab.
Click the "Show advanced options" button and then the "Configure..." button (for "QuickConnect button").
Add "illustrator.exe" to disable the QuickConnect button for it.
You may also want to add "flash.exe" if you have professional installed, which is reported to have the same problem.
Good luck and happy illustrating without crashing every single time you exit Illustrator.

  • Illustrator CS5 .ai files won't open

Everything is working fine with opening .psd files in photoshop.  Everything was fine a few days ago opening .ai files with Illustrator.  Now I can't open any .ai files most of the time.  My computer will start up Illustrator but no file will load.  Occasionally,  the files I tried to open will all open and load at once after a reboot.  But after the reboot, the files will not open again.  I uninstalled Illustrator and reinstalled, however, this has not fixed the problem.  I'm also having trouble exiting out of Illustrator, it won't let me close the program at times. I'm using a Macbook Pro with the Lion OS.  Any ideas of what to do?

On my Windows Box, I re-deleted my prefs (out of curiosity) zipped the old prefs, then deleted the files (in case I needed to restore something). When I reopened Illustrator, I opened my first file (no problem). Then my second this time, rather than nothing happening, I received an AppCrash error for BIB.DLL shortly after the message (can't open illustration). I close AI, then open the file that gave me the "can't open illustration" error. After a little research for the BIB.DLL it looks like it might be a corrupt font. This is something different from any Mac problem because of the different ways the two systems handle fonts.
On the Mac if I were running into the same error it would more than likely be something related to permissions if it started happening on its own or a corrupt typeface. If your printer driver was corrupted, then maybe there is an underlying hardware issue (drive about to fail) or software issue (corrupt driver, OS, etc). Disk Utility repair permissions doesn't fix everything. You might want to run an app like Onyx or something that will go over your permissions in greater detail (Disk Warrior perhaps).
If that doesn't work I would one-by-one remove different settings, remove all non-essential fonts, and go forward to see what's causing the issue. If a reinstall didn't fix it, then it's something not removed by the reinstall like a pref, a fontlst, or a corrupt typeface.
Prefs on the Mac can reside in more than one location. There is a good reference on here:

  • How to fix my cs5.1 illustrator plugins?!

I accidentally moved my illustrator cs5.1 program into the trash bin when I pulled it back out, all the the plug ins were all messed up. Illustrator will open, but wont let me open any files or manipulate them. Any suggestions on what to do? Should I uninstall illustrator and reinstall it, or will that mess up my other programs in the creative suite? help!

Uninstall and reinstall. It should not efect other applications.

  • CCft - Illustrator 17.1 update not offered for any team member

After extensive research on this I have to be the next one posting this:
being the admin I am wondering why none of my team members get the update 17.1 of Illustrator. Reinstalled, Cleaner Tool'ed, un- and rechecked "update" field in App Manager - it will update to 17.0.2, no further.
Localized German version - is there anything I missed about that update? should be out since 01/2014.
thx in advance and best regards,

It should work. You can try to manually apply it. You can download it from here:

  • Can't do a file...place any longer with illustrator

I purchased CS6 in August 2013. I have a Mac OSX running 10.9. My Illustrator stopped allowing me to do a file...place. It will attempt to allow me to do the file...place and when the box comes up to give me my choice of what to place, it flashes on the screen and then goes away. I have tried uninstalling Illustrator and reinstalling with no luck. I even opened up InDesign and Photoshop and they both allow me to do a file...place just fine. Any advise would be helpful!

    Hi Monty & Jrmelot,
Please try the following steps to recover from this issue:
    1) Launch Text Edit
    2) Press "Command + O" to open the "Open" OS dialog
    3) From within the "Open" OS dialog change the view mode to any other except the "Cover Flow"
    4) Also change the "Arrange By" selection to any other option say "Name" in place of "None"
    5) Open any text file and then quit the text edit app.
Then try to place files in AI because now the "Finder" preferences has been changed/modified.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Raghuveer
