Illustrator 3D Shading Problems

Hi
I am just learing Illustrator and I am doing tutorials that I am seeing on the net. I have come across a problem with a tutorial regarding 3D. The tutorial tells me to write some text then click Effect - 3D - Extrude & Bevel to produce a nice effect. The problem I am having is that I am not seeing any shading even though I have chosen 'Plastic Effect' from the option panel. In fact the only change I see is when I select 'Wireframe' all the rest just give me the below/attached image.
I have upgraded my display adapters drivers etc to no affect. Ny machine is a Dell Studio XPS 8000 64bit, Intel i7 2.79 GHz with 6gigs Tri-Chanel RAM.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, thanks for the reply! I actually did a system restore to a few months ago and it works fine now. Must have been a driver issue or some kind of conflict. Thanks a mill anyway!

When I tried to upgrade my CS 6 Illustrator and Photoshop through my Adobe Updater, I kept getting the following errors:

I've followed your manual downloading of patch installation, but error U44M2P7 occurs for both manually downloaded patch for Illustrator and Photoshop CS6 for Mac.

The File>Place (File>Inserisci) works with other formats than AI. Is it another format?
With AI file, you should use File>Open (File>Apri), or copy the desired contents from the original document into the one where you widh to use it. You may need to tick Paste Remembers Layers in the Layers palette flyout/dropdown.
You may use the Translate button at the lower right corner.
Did you reinstall using the full three step way (otherwise strange things may linger)?
Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

Viewing large Illustrator CS3 files problem

I use bridge to browse through previous work in created in Illustrator CS3.
Problem - when viewing these files in Bridge some files (whatever their dimensions) show as large thumbnails and others (with the same AI dimensions) are small and do not seem to stretch in Bridge?
Can anyone explain how to stretch the thumbnail in Bridge.

Sorted - I need to save the CS3 file with 'create pdf compatible file' checked in the options, and it then opens as a large thumbnail in bridge.

Mesh transparency for shading problems

If anyone has run into this problem and can help ...please!
Using: Illustrator CS2 on Win XP Pro sp3
Experience - minimal (I come from using Xara and Inkscape).
My method of doing this type of art is mostly in Xara. I would creat block color shapes with decals and sticker, etc. and then use transparency gradients to create highlights and shadows. Here I was testing / getting use to the mesh tool and shaped the form of the car with color - rather then trasnparent highlights and shadows (top). But I now have to add stickers and decals to this car and tried to apply a clone of the hood mesh over the red stripes and it created a strang clipping error. You can see in the bottom screen cap that the sides and lower part of the red stripes disappeared, while the top remained untouched. Will I be able to use the mesh tool to create transparent highlights and shadows over the top of blocked coloe and the stickers, or will I have to manually match the shading on each sticker?

I have used Illustrator mostly for converting files done in Xara and Inkscape to Illustrator for customers who needed an Illustrator file. Xara is my go to for vector, but some jobs it just makes more sense to do it all in Illustrator (because of customers) - so....
Not sure how that will be affected by the changes. Maybe many small companies will jump to Corel - who knows what will happen.
Specifics: - for illustration - Xara lacks a mesh tool - but it's gradient tools crush all other vector programs, and it is super fast to use (once you get the hang of the interface). I am seeing that Illustrator offers more precision in some of it's tools, but it is not as easy to work fast. Inkscape is just the king of bang for you buck (it's rough but very usable for simpler projects - I have used it solo for easier freelance jobs).
I keep meaning to test out Corel. There is even a dark horse product from Serif (Draw Plus), if they add some important key features, could make it the best bang for your buck commercial light weight vector program. There are certainly options. It is sort of ironic that there seems to be more options on PC then Mac, for these creative softwares.
To me it's just about getting jobs done. The particular tool doesn't matter too much.
I should add. As far as vector goes - I started in Aldus Freehand and Illustrator way back, and for work reasons ended up jumping back and forth on occassion. So I never developed a strong tie to any software.

PDF created in Illustrator CS5 causing problems in InDesign CS5

I have created a wallpaper / background in Illustrator CS5 that measures 646mm x 303mm (it's for an A4 folder cover) is in CMYK colour mode and is made up of only 2 layers. Layer 1 is 3 rectangles - 1 the size of the page and 2 that are 50% of the full page. They are all filled in with a gradient. Layer 2 is 2 x waves made up os 2 lines then "Object", "Blend", "Specified Steps - 20", "Make". This is the extent of the graphics on this page. I have then saved it as a PDF (Illustrator Default) and it's size is 518k - pretty reasonable size.
Here's my problem - When I place the PDF in InDesign as the background for my folder it is slowing all my processes down is I put my view to "High Quality". I can move, resize, type or place anything without the program crashing or a monumental delay in whatever it is that I am trying to do. Printing is also taking an excessive amount of time when I try to print off the PDF (created from the InDesign file and being all of 1.2MB).
Also - the illustrator document has now crashed once.
Other things that might be useful to know is that I am running on Windows XP, Office 2010, 32 bit, and have the whole CS5 package.
I can't think of any other information to give.
Do you think there is a system problem? File issue? Any advice would be FANTASTIC.

That's an issue with the shared PDF stuff in newer versions of Acrobat. There's realy no fix for this misbehavior, it's more or less a "hard" compatibility issue.

Illustrator CS6 - Organisation problems with printing from PDF

Hi everybody
I working with the Illustroartor for some times now and I get better every time, but now its appears that’s I have a organization problem with my Illustrator CS6 and maybe somebody can help me here.
My problem: I create for example a logo and this logo I like to print on an Objekt like a Paperclip or a Lighter. I have now a print template as a PDF File (see attachement) with serveral predefined print areas. Around 100 predefined printing areas are on the PDF File and the only way to add my logo into this 100 predefined printing areas is by using the funktion “copy/past” but this takes long time and I have to adjust each single logo into the predefined printing area by hand … so this way don’t make really sense and is also very time consuming.
My question is: Is there any way to automate this process by using e.g. the artboard funktion or some other functions?
I would appreacte any help in this case!!!

Illustrator 5 - patterns problem with printing

Hi please please help having majoy problems and need help asap in work!!!
I am working on a PC windows 7 illustrator 5.
when I create a pattern any type even a imple spot and fill a CAD t shirt, its fine, when I print it, it creates lines through out either vertica/horizonal when I send to someone else to print its fine when i print on another printer its fine. when using default pattern swatches from illutstrator it prints fine, it seems to be when I fill a flat CAD with a pattern and I have created it.
Is this something to do with printer? I need ergent help its driving me crazy have asked loads of IT people everyone is stuck even my collegues who have worked with software for years.
please please help!! I have tried everythint, loads of diffrent pattens and colours nothing is fixing, lines still show on pdf doc too.

Illustrator 5 is more than a decade old. If you really mean version 5, you may be hard pressed to find much help.
If by chance you mean CS5 (version 15) that's another matter.
Does the problem exisit in a new document or only in specific documents?
Have you tried trashing the Ai settings?
The fact that someone else can print it... as well as switching printers works, would lead to a issue with your print driver for the specific printer showing the issue. Or perhaps a combination of the print driver and the artwork construction. For example, the printer only handles Postscript level 2 and you need Postscript level 3 support to print the artwork properly.

Illustrator pdf graphic problems

Hi All,
I have a file which I need to send to a printer as locked pdf, but am having problems with my graphics saving correctly.
The magazine I am publishing in cannot be trusted to not tinker with the artwork (messed up last 2 years advertisements mucking around with layout), hence trying to make this as secure as possible.
I have created some cartoon like clouds and when I save the artwork as pdf they have pencil thin grid lines all over them, as if they have been broken up into large square shapes in the save process.
Strangely, if I flatten the artwork in Illustrator I get the same result.
Any ideas?

Do the clouds involve transparency and/or raster effects? If so, you are probably seeing the onscreen antialiasing where the resulting raster images abut after you Flatten.
Turn off antialised display in Prefs and see if the "gridlines" go away.

Illustrator CS4 plugin problem after upgrade to OS X Yosemite

I just upgrade my OS X Maverick to Yosemite, and found my adobe illustrator CS4 got error while i open it.
it shown missing plugin of photoshopimport.aip....
Anyone know how to solve this problem??

Yosemite has several features that I have been looking forward to and will continue to use. I find them extremely useful.
I've hated Adobe since I first bought Pagemaker in the early 90's. If I was a heavy user I would be using their cloud CS anyway but I'm not. I can't justify the cost. Smaller more accessible companies are eager to pick up us cast offs from Adobe. I for one am looking forward to leaving Adobe behind.
FWIW saving an image as a PDF in Photoshop works fine for me.

You are simply running out of disk space. Free up drive space.

Illustrator File icon problems

Okay, I think I really messed things up on my computer. I'm on Windows 7 64-bit and I recently got through uninstalling my CS4 version of the Adobe Design Premium. Unfortunately, doing this changed my file associations and messed up the icons for file types. First my .ai files had no icon and didn't open with Illustrator CS5.1. Then I got that fixed, but .EPS had no icon. Having it open with Illustrator gave it the default .ai icon and not the .eps icon like it was before. Even the file type description is gone, having been replaced by the generic "Adobe Illustrator Artwork 15.1". SVG and SVGZ files also have the same problem.
I've tried modifying the registry in hopes to get the correct icon back but nothing works. I already treid reinstalling the program, too. What do I do from here?

Okay, so the default program thing fixed EPS but the file types program didn't quite fix SVG. Changing anything about SVG changes all .AI files as well, so that means there is still no distinction. It's as if the two formats are somehow one.
I don't know if I changed anything for the worse but there isn't normally a "Adobe.Illustrator.SVG" key in the registry so if I make the .svg files not open in Illustrator, it shows up as expected. It's just that anytime it's associated with Illustrator, it defaults to the regular .ai icon instead of using its custom icon like it's supposed to for other files.

Illustrator cs6 zoom problem cinteq 24hd touch

i have problems with the zoom function illustrator cs6.
i am using a cinteq 24hd touch and macbook pro latest software.
i can zoon out with the wheel and touch but the zoom to does't work.
can somebody help me?

Photoshop & Illustrator Key colour problem

HELP! I have created a b/w graphic with gradients in illustrator and saved as a CMYK .pdf (cant see any greyscale options) and opened this file in photoshop to create a .jpg. Problem is that my deepest black is now only 91% after conversion but I want it 100% black!
Any ideas how to fix this?

Print where? Only off-set printing firms use CMYK process inks.
All desktop inkjet printers expect RGB numbers, many have a wider gamut than CMYK. It does no good to work in CMYK if the output is inkjet.
A better method is to work/edit in RGB and Soft Proof to your output profile. Best of both worlds that way.

Adobe Illustrator CS5 groups problem.

I work under windows xp using Adobe Illustrator CS5, and the problem is that when I group a certain objects in an illustration and save that illustration as an *.ai file, then send it to a client that uses MAC the groups are getting jumbled up. The client even sent me a screenshots, and the groups are REALLY jumbled up.
Some objects that i originally grouped together are not in the same group any more, some objects from a certain group that, somehow became part of some other group.
I build my images on one layer with several sublayers.
Can building illustrations with every single group on a separate layer solve this problem? Am I missing something? This is the first time I encounter this kind of problem. Please help.

I don't ever recall this occurring but it sounds like a corruption to me. But I do not know if is on your end or your clients end.
I use a mac and am will to open your file and send you screen shots so you can compare, if I open it fine then the problem is probably with your client?
But they might not like to here this.
You can also try sending them a pdf or a .ps file they can open the .ps file directly in AI without distilling it.
