Illustrator 8 on Mac OS X 10.4.11

Yes, I realize that it wasn't designed to be able to work with Mac OS X.
I've been a PS user for years now, and decided to give Illustrator a try. But, before I dish out hundreds of bucks on it, I thought I'd purchase an earlier version from Ebay and give it a go first.
I am running an OLDER version of Photoshop on this same Mac (PS 7), but Illustrator 8 won't install. Is there ANY way around this? I guess I assumed that since an older version of PS would work, that an older version of Illustrator would, too.
I found this thread here: http://macosx.com/forums/mac-os-x-system-mac-software/294778-illustrator-file-previews.ht ml
That thread (and others) clearly states that someone has 8 working on an OS X system (10.4.8 is the lastest mentioned, which is darn close enough!).
However, when I try to run the installation program on my disc, I get this:
"You cannot open the application 'Install Adobe Illustrator' because it is not supported on this system."
I'm a fairly new Mac user, and so I thought I'd ask here how exactly I would go about getting this installation to work. A plugin? A special download, and then I just need to use the product key that I purchased? Is there anyone that can help me? I'd really love to get this running, and then I'm sure I'll want to upgrade to CS3!
Thank you so much in advance for your help!
Edit: Oh... It IS a Mac CD that I'm trying to install, btw. It's Illustrator 8.0.1 for Macs.

You would need OS9.2(?), but...oh wait, Apple no longer supports classic ( they dumped it with the Tiger intro ( 10.4 ). Illustrator 8's font engine ( and print engine, and a few other things you'll need ) will not work with Leopard and/or the recent Intel based Macs.
A workaround would be to setup an external drive and install OS9 on that, but that would be a long shot because the Intel Mac probably will not mount the drive or recognize it...so no way to access Illustrator 8, even if you were able to install it. You could find a used G3 or G4 with OS9 installed, then you'd be golden. You'd just need an old copy of Adobe Type Manager ( ATM Deluxe ) which may work with the Open Type fonts you're probably using now.

  • Cut/Paste from Word to Illustrator CS3 for Mac suddenly not working

This issue regards Illustrator CS3 for Mac on a Mac Pro with 6 GB.
Exactly one week ago I created a number of Illustrator files by cutting charts from a Word 2008 document and pasting them into an Illustrator document.
In the past I have dragged the images (or clip art) or simply used Control-C or even Control-X, but by whatever method I opted for, getting the image from Word to Illustrator CS3 has not been a problem.
Yesterday I got a new chart and a request to replace an old image - one that I had created last week on Tuesday by the Drag/Drop or Cut/Paste method.   For reasons I can't begin to imagine the process simply won't work now.
I also find that if I simply select text in a Word Document, hit Ctrl-C and then try a Ctrl-V in Illustrator I don't get to see my text pasted in - ONLY if I already have a text block open and the cursor in place will I get to see the text copied over into Illustrator.  This is very strange and not at all how things have worked in the past - typically I would see the new Text Object just appear, and then I could move it to wherever I wanted.
I have opened up a number of old files that I know were created with copied text and also opened the associated Word files (earlier versions of Word) and again find that I can't copy text over, or even move images over - even though I clearly could do this before.  I have also tried entirely new files - also with no success.
I was at an Apple one-to-one session this morning and they were more than mystified by this.  I can Cut and Paste into Adobe Photoshop Elements, but I can't even cut and paste from Adobe Photoshop Elements into Illustrator CS3.   I can drag the Photoshop file (from the Finder window) into the Illustrator document and poof - get my image that way, but it's as an image only.  If the base image in question is a vector image or something else having a plurality of elements, I can't then select the elements in Illustrator to change their color, delete them, or otherwise play with them.
I have brought up a word document on another Mac system that also has Illustrator CS3 and find that it too can't drag/drop cut/paste between the two applications.   At Apple, we did confirm that such ability is operational in the new Illustrator CS4, but none of their store systems still have CS3 to provide yet a third system to test.
I have deleted my Illustrator CS3 preferences, tried flushing the p-ram, and of course run fix and repair permissions - no dice.
My Mac systems update daily and there is nothing in the main update log that shows anything for Adobe or Office (nor do I think there should be).  Adobe Update reports that everything is up to date, and I don't see a history file to know what might have changed in the last week.   Office also reports fully up to date and happy.
As I can cut and paste the images into an email for Mail and into Photoshop, I am fairly certain that it is NOT a Microsoft Office 2008 issue.  The fact that another Mac with Illustrator CS3 also can't cut and paste suggests that is is really not something personal to my main system.
It is almost as if this is some clandestine "update" intended to encourage me to buy Illustrator CS4.  Given that I bought Illustrator CS3 less than a year ago, I really am not eager to buy the new version.   The greeting on the Adobe Support page that CS3 is no longer the current version and therefore supported was most annoying.
I am really hoping that someone out there has an idea of what to try changing, removing and/or adjusting with respect to Adobe Illustrator CS3.

I tried the Select by Path option - can't believe I missed it - and found it made no difference.
I actually uninstalled and reinstalled the whole app.  When I tried to simply re-install (can't remember it's exact phrase) it got part way through and then demanded another disk - but I only have one DVD with the application - the extra DVD is for tutorials and it didn't accept that one either.  So I restarted that process and chose to completely uninstall.  Then reinstalled - hey with only my one disk - gee, just like the first time.   And then it seemed to work.
I was not aware of the save as PDF option - but yes I have Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 for Mac so that option is there - and it seems to work too.
There were of course a slue of updates, and I let them all proceed - but even with them all in place the system is fine and I can once again drag and drop / cut and paste things back and forth.   I just tried a text block and "The Quick Brown Fox" pasted in with a clipping mask about 10 times the size of the document, but other than that it was ok.
So I have things working again on my primary system.   Will try and figure out what's wrong with the other one - but a reinstall might be the easiest game there too.

  • Problems Installing Adobe Illustrator CS4 on Mac OS X Yosemite

    Hi all,
When trying to install Illustrator CS4 on Mac OS X Yosemite, I receive an error: "required resources are missing."
Previously, I had problems using Illustrator CS4 when I upgraded to Yosemite, due to an error with the plugin "photoshopimport.aip." I had attempted to uninstall Illustrator, but the uninstall also gave me errors.  I ultimately used the CC Cleaner Tool to remove Illustrator.
Now, however, I can't reinstall Illustrator CS4 either!  I use the version provided on Adobe's website, so it's not a problem with a physical DVD.
Any ideas for potential solutions?  Many thanks!

I don't have an Adobe installation log, and it's not hidden either.  I tried installing Illustrator CS4 again, and I noticed that the install fails while ~80% through an "initializing" step.  So, it fails before it even starts to generate an install log!  I re-downloaded it and had the same error.
I did notice that I have some errors in the Adobe CC Cleaner Tool when I was removing Illustrator CS4.  If you look at my first post, I couldn't use it, or uninstall it, so I simply used the Cleaner Tool to remove it.  There are some errors in the Cleaner Tool log, such as this one:
2014-11-02 15:11:19.319 Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool[1573:8801317] The following session will be removed: bf2f18d647916c8449e4a221e4609a2

To make things worse, Adobe Support Advisor has been discontinued, which could interpret errors contained in Adobe logs.
I contacted Adobe support via chat, and they simply told me that Illustrator CS4 was not supported for Yosemite, and did not offer any further help or information...
Any other ideas?  Or am I simply stuck??
Thanks for all of your advice!

  • Keyboard shortcuts not working in Illustrator CC for Mac

I'm having a lot of problems using keyboard shortcuts in Illustrator CC for Mac. They'll will work intermittently. No keyboard issues anywhere else. Is this a bug, or something I can remedy on my end?

I am having the exact same problem and it is really infuriating at times... I just switched from CS6 where I encountered no such problems.
It seems that it usually happens when I switch to Finder or another application and back (altough it may only be Finder). The Illustrator window is still active because I can see Illustrator reacting when I press only CMD or ALT. However all keyboard shortcuts just stop working, for instance CMD+S, or V or any other toolbar shortcuts. To fix it I have to do a mouse click on a tool or menu command or something, and the shortcuts are back for a while...
I am also running Illustrator v.17.0.0 and OS X 10.8.4 on a macbook Pro connected to a Thunderbolt Display and bluetooth mouse/keyboard.
I sure hope this is picked up by Adobe soon, it is really messing with my workflow!

  • Are there any differences between using Adobe Illustrator on a MAC and on a PC?

    Hello,
I'm about go enroll in a class specialized for teaching Adobe Illustrator in order to be able to use the program at work.  The company that I work at uses Macintosh computers to deal with clerical work and everything, so I would like to know if there are any differences between using Adobe Ilustrator on a MAC and on a PC.  The school that offers training teaches two types of classes, where one uses Illustrator on a MAC, and the other one on a PC.  The PC class is able to have an earlier start date, which is why I'm sort of leaning towards choosing that class as I need to be able to use the software as soon as possible, but if there are main differences between the interface that will affect my knowledge of using Illustrator on a MAC after I take the class with Windows systems, then I will most likely be waiting for the class teaching in MAC systems.
Thanks in advance for the help!
Oh and another suggestion- should I take the Illustrator class in CS6 or CS5?

Reading through the CS5 vs CS6 performance thread, the Mac version seems to have worse performance than Windows version.  From a starter's perspective the differences would most likely never be realized.  It will take some time to see differences between even CS5 and CS6 other than the visual aspect of course.
Definitely take the CS6 versionso you can say you have it.  CS5 is my preferred version, CS6 is garbage with the bugs it has for the type of work I use it for.

  • Can't get Illustrator CS2 for Mac to start up/open

    Hello Everyone,
My Illustrator Cs2 for Mac was working great, but now it won't open start-up.
It begins to open when the window for the software startup opens, it begins to initialize, it begins to load fonts, but then it gets 'hung up' when it says "12.0.1 Initializing...Created by the Adobe Illustrator Team". In my dock it says that the "application is not responding" and it never resolves to completely load the software.
I enclose a screenshot to show you what I'm on about.
I have Mac OS X.4.11, a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, IGB of memory and 15 GB of hard disk space. Every other software on the laptop works well and I have no other problems.
Is anyone familiar with this or does anyone know what I should do?
    Thanks

  • When saving an Illustrator file on mac, it deletes the file Tags. Why or how to solve it?

I save an Illustrator file on mac, and when doing so, I create a Tag for it.
Whenever I make some changes and save the file again, the tag (or tags) disappear. Why?
    Thank you very much,

    Hi John
I have indicated on the attached jpeg where the problem is, basically a line of text is missing at the top and part of the feeding diagram is missing. I created the artwork in different layer and then flattened. All text has been converted to outlines, however the areas being affected have no transparency, I have used solid fills or no fills. I get the same result when I export the file as a jpeg. Hope you can help.

  • Illustrator CS 5 Mac 10.6.8 launch issue

I am operation CS5 Illustrator on a Mac 10.6.8. Yesterday it was opperating fine but today when I try to open it it opens and then freezes immediately. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it but the same problem is happening. I took it in to the Apple store and after looking at the program logs said it appears as if it is trying to download and update when it opens but cannot find what it needs which is why it is freezing. How do I fix this?

    Danielle,
That is very unfortunate, especially since it had just worked; I suggested the Cleaner Tool with an un/reinstalliation because you had just been through that.
Adobe has started setting up a set of pages for downloading older versions (requiring  a licence) here, so far covering (at least) CS6 and CS5.5:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install.html
    http://www.adobe.com/downloads/other-downloads.html
Until (even) older versions are added, this thread made by staff about downloading the old stuff, with its reference to the Prodesign Tools page is recommended (the last link goes back to CS3):
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5418120#5418120
    http://prodesigntools.com/tag/ddl
It is crucial to follow all the initial steps precisely.

  • Is there a way to change the default export filetype in Illustrator CS4 for Mac OSx

    Hi,
I do a significant amount of exporting from Illustrator and always need my images exported as JPG. The default filetype for exporting in CS4 (for mac) is PNG, and I can't find a way to change this. Since I always want to export as JPG, I feel like I should be able to set that as a default.
Am I missing something? How can I change this default?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    You can create an action.
Record the action then go to file export select jpeg and then the quality etc and then exort and stop recording the action give it a keyboard shortcut.

    #1) Update to Illustrator 13.0.2
#2) It's always been Adobe's stance that you should
never save and open files across a network because corruption can happen. Work locally, then copy to the server.

You may try to restart the Creative Cloud application by quitting and relaunching it.
Have you installed the Application Manager?
    It should work with 10.7.5.
