Illustrator AI files compatibility 32 bit vs 64 bit

Hi everyone
In early August, I will purchase a new tower with Windows 7 64 bit and install Adobe Creative Suite  CS6
I'd like to create my fabric designs in ILLUSTRATOR on the new machine, but print on a special printer attached to my OLD tower which is a Windows XP 32 bit Operating System.  I will install the upgrade from CS5 to CS6 for Illustrator on the old tower ....
So does CS6 on a 64 bit tower have a SAVE AS for 32 bit so I can use my old tower for the printing needs ?

I'm having the machine specially made .. my current one HP Tower is 10 years old (and it has served me well) ...I think this new one will be elite 8300 tower
my first questions were to support .. who did say the After Effects in CS6 is not backward compatible thats ok
the machines will NOT network.  Old is headed up to the guest bedroom/office to hook to a brand new epson ink jet so my fabric patterns will not have ribboning as HP inkjets are known to do
I was only going to upgrade the Illustrator for that is the main files holding old and future new patterns ... but I like your idea of try new machine first ... and if I have to upgrade old machine after ....
thank you again .. you have answered all my questions ... and I am much more comfortable with my decisions and purchasing action

  • CHM File Compatibility with 64-bit Applications

Does anyone have any experience developing HTML Help (CHM)
for 64-bit applications? Are the 32-bit CHM files created with
RoboHelp compatible on the 64-bit platform? Thanks for your
    help!

    Hi,
I happened to notice this post and thought, "Yikes, we run
our CHM files on 64-bit systems all the time and we've never
    checked whether they're working properly."
So I did a systematic check of the following on a 64-bit
system (Windows 2003 Server). Fortunately, everything worked
exactly as it does on 32-bit versions. Phew!
Context sensitive help works (pressing F1 in the application).
All links worked, including popup links.
All expanding and dropdown hotspots worked.
Both Index and Contents worked fine. Contents updated
automatically when I move between topics (as is specified in our
    project).
Search functionality worked fine. Search options, too.
Favorites worked fine. These reappeared even when I closed the
help and reopened it (as they should).
All of the above also worked when I opened the CHM file from
Windows Explorer (rather than from inside the application).
    Regards,
    Eileen
P.S. I should add that the help was compiled using RH7.

  • How to use Windows SIM to create answer files for 32-bit (x86) Windows 7 from a 64-bit (x86_64) Windows 7 PC?

So I'm having the old 32-bit/64-bit compatibility issues with Windows SIM. I have a Windows 7 64-bit PC (actually a virtual machine) that I intend to use to run Windows SIM and make answer files for 32-bit Windows 7 unattended installations.
I've installed the latest Windows ADK (the Win 8.1 one). When doing this there was no choice of download or prompt during installation regarding 32-bit or 64-bit architectures. Once installed the Windows Kits folder is under Program Files (x86), but imgmgr.exe
is a 64-bit executable. When I try and generate the catalog for a 32 bit install.wim, I get an error that 64-bit SIM cannot catalog 32-bit images.
Is there any way to install a version of Windows SIM on a 64-bit Windows 7 PC that can catalog 32-bit Windows 7 images?

    Hi,
I think the biggest problem is the architecture specific in answer file:
    <settings pass="specialize">
            <component name="Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State"
    xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
    <OEMInformation>
<Manufacturer>[ REPLACE WITH COMPANY NAME ]</Manufacturer>
<SupportURL>[ REPLACE WITH SUPPORT WEBSITE ]</SupportURL>
    </OEMInformation>
            </component>
        </settings>
The answer file must include processor-specific components. The answer-file settings in the windowsPE configuration pass must match the architecture type of the preinstallation environment. The settings that apply to the Windows image must match the architecture
type of the image. For example, if you create an answer file that deploys 64-bit images from a 32-bit preinstallation environment, all components in the answer file for the windowsPE configuration pass must include the processor attribute type of x86. Settings
to be applied in the specialize, oobeSystem, or other configuration passes must include the processor attribute type of amd64.

  • Issue (aka bug):  File compatibility and alpha channels

When I enable file compatibility mode on photoshop (so that previews and thumbnails show up), the thumbnail and preview will be wrong when there's an alpha channel in the channel palette. Specifically, the thumbnail will be masked by the top-most alpha channel in the channel palette. Consequently, there is sort of a work-around--if you create a plain white alpha channel and make sure it's the top-most alpha channel in the palette, then the preview and thumbnail come out fine. Luckily, this requires negligible extra memory.
If there's no alpha channel or I don't save alpha channels, the preview/thumbnail looks fine.
In spite of the work-around, a fix would be nice. It'd also be nice if there was a way to have a preview/thumbnails in Finder without the large memory penalty of compatibility mode.

Yes, everything in Bridge works great. However, the search function in Bridge is SLOW and a bit flaky (same problem on the Windows side as well) so I like to use spotlight instead for searching. Additionally, I like to use iPhoto to create collections of images that will contain photoshop files as well as others.
For now, it is workable for me to just use compatibility mode in photoshop and make sure all images with alpha channels have an all-white alpha channel at the top of the stack. The file size penalty is tolerable for now. If Apple ever fixes things on their end, then it's a simple script to convert my psd files back again.

  • Importing 16 bit file into 24 bit project

    Whats up guy's
When importing a 16 bit file into a 24 bit project
should I convert the file to 24 bits or keep the
    original 16 bit depth?
I'm aware that the sample rate is converted to the
projects sample rate when importing files as long as
the corresponding checkbox is enabled in the project
    settings - assets pane.
I'm also aware that conversion can be done at a later
state after importing, but I'm curious about the best
or proper approach. Should this be done prior to importing
or should the file be kept in it's original state (16 bits)?
PS - If you could provide the chapter or page of the manual
this information is on that would be extremely helpful.
    Thnx in advance

    Qstn wrote:
When you say "alter the file's sample data" are you referring to
edits done in the sample editor or sample rate conversion?
both would qualify. there are some corner cases where bit depth does not matter when destructively editing sample data (as I outlined in my initial post).
If you're talking about the sample editor do you mean converting by
saving a copy as 24 bits and making edits to the copy might show tiny
    improvements?
    yes.
At this moment I don't intend on destructively editing the file but
you never know how processing and mixing might go until your done.
ok. if your file is read and processed in realtime (or via a frozen track) then there's no loss - logic will convert audio samples during playback to a 32 floating point representation as it is read from disk, before it enters the mixer, or is processed by your plugins.
i'm not sure if source bit depth determines bounce in place format- if so, and if you use this feature, then you should convert the source to 24 bit.
the end point is: unless you are desperate for disk space, just convert it to 24 bits. 16 bits is very 'last millennium' in modern production stages - there are a few exceptions to that (e.g., if the files are used by a software sampler, or if the format is required for compatibility with other hardware or software) but... most of the strong arguments for 16 bit died years ago. so, i'd say it's best to consider 24 bits as the minimum during production unless you have very specific reasons to go below that (and you fully understand the tradeoffs). if you want to know the 'whys', that's fine, of course. curiosity and knowledge don't hurt. if you're only looking for a recommendation, that's my recommendation.

  • When I saved an Illustrator CS6 file to EPS format, I got "could not complete the requested operation. unknown error."

When I saved an Illustrator CS6 file to EPS format, I got "could not complete the requested operation. unknown error."
Google it and find some temp fix. run the illustrator by using "Run as admin" mode and fix the problem, but when use run as, can't see all the original user's mapping drives.
    So still need it fixed.

It is win 7 64 bit system and same error on Illustrator x86 and x64.

  • File compatibility setting in Pref. / composite thumbnail

I would like photoshop to show a file image for the thumbnail (instead the generic lines of type). I know in the pref box I can set the "Maximize File compatibility" to "Always" or Ask, and this will save a flattened version of the file as part of the document. But this greatly increased the file size. I did some checking on 10 layered files ranging from 14Mb to 45Mb. The new file size increased a whopping 35% to 88%. That's a heavy price to pay  both on my system here, our back up / archive, CD / DVD burning, and our client systems.
I'm in the process of putting together a browser based image library. To render a image thumbnail it shows the generic lines of type if layered (useless), and a image thumbnail only if "File compatibility" is set to Yes. ( Which greatly increases file size, and cost of storage space).
Is there a way to get a image thumbnail without having to set Maximize File Compatibility to Yes?
It would seem to me that photoshop should be able to create a small, low res flattened version, at a low quality setting, that would be on the kb in size for a thumbnail. And imbed that into the file, vs the bloated composite. I understand the reason for the composite for file compatibailty with previous versions etc. Just not for creating the thumbnail.
I'm hoping some else has more info that I don't.
    thanks all...
    JeffN

    Jeff,
The wording in Preferences > File Handling may have misled you. It says "Image Previews" in connection with creating a file icon despite a file's icon having nothing to do with Finder's preview.
With OS X Photoshop, as long as the preference to create icon is enabled, an icon is generated from the visible composite of the document and is attached to the PSD file (not actually embedded in the file) regardless of the Maximum Compatibility setting. Finder will display the icon.
However, Max Compat has to be enabled for a composite to be stored in the PSD, and it is that composite which Finder reads to generate its preview.
At least that's the case for 8-bit per channel PSD.

  • File compatibility between CS 5.5 MAC and CS 5.5 PC?

We are currently a PC based shop with a few MAC's tossed here and there.  I have been asked to verify the file compatibility between CS 5.5 MAC and CS 5.5 PC.  Are the files fully compatible?  i.e. can user A on a PC create an illustrator/photoshop/etc document which is then opened by user B on a MAC with no issues?
    Thanks!

Yes. For the programs you mentioned it has been forever this way and even for programs like Premiere Pro or Encore, that were platform-specific until recently, this is no longer an issue ever since CS5. Of course you will still have to take care of different handling for file paths on different platforms for externally linked files, but that's a different matter and nothing specific to Adobe...

  • Mail keeps crashing when attaching illustrator .eps files

Whenever I receive or try to attach an Illustrator .eps file, mail crashes. The .eps file is fine, and can be read by CS and CS2 software.
Whenever Mail tries to read the attachment, it seems it can't cope and quits.
Bit of a bummer when I'm a designers and that's what I need to send to clients.
The only way I get around it is by zipping or stuffing it as a stuffit file.
How can I reload Mail or cure the problem?
    All ideas welcome

Look at the console logs for any errors that occur at the same time Mail crashes. What do the errors say?

  • OLE embedded Adobe Illustrator Artwork files not rendering properly

I'm using BroadVision's Quicksilver.  I've attempted to embed AI Artwork
files as OLE objects (linked and not linked), but they don't render within
Quicksilver.  After working with their support team, they came to the
conclusion that it was an Adobe Illustrator issue because they were
able to reproduce the issue in Wordpad (not MS Word).
The problem can be reproduced by the following steps (tested in Vista,
    XP, & Server 2008):
    :- Open Wordpad
:- Click Insert -> Object -> Create From File -> Browse -> Find and select a file -> Open
Other variations on this theme encounter the same problem, including
    pasting it from the clipboard.
If you open a Wordpad document in MS Word and embed the OLE
object, it saves a preview of the image which is visible from Wordpad
if you open it later on (as long as you don't link to the original; if you do,
and attempt to update the link, the preview image will go away).  However,
subsequent alterations of the OLE object don't show up in Wordpad -- rather,
the image that was rendered in Word continues to be displayed (unless, of
course, you open it in MS Word again and re-save after the link is updated).
It appears the support team at another company encountered a user
experiencing the same or similar issues with their product, but on
Illustrator CS2 as opposed to CS4:
    http://www.graphpad.com/faq/viewfaq.cfm?faq=1309
Unfortunately, the "export to another format" workaround won't suffice.
We're working with thousands of Illustrator artwork files that need to be
version controlled, and other technical documents will link to the same
Illustrator file.  When an AI file is updated, all technical documents
need to use the altered version; linking to an exported version of the
file just creates one more link in the chain that can create problems
    or confusion.
Even if the version control stuff wasn't an issue, exporting to other
formats seems rather limited.  If we export to other formats (eg, pdf)
the images render poorly compared to what they look like in AI.
We've tried a number of things to work around this:
    * Make sure AI [is/is not] already running
    * Rasterize paths
    * Alter the size of the image in AI
    * Alter the size of the object in the target application
    * 'Save as' with a different version of AI selected (for all versions)
    * Saving as an EPS or PDF -- the former has the same rendering issue
as AI files; the latter renders but the drawing is blocky, probably because
the graphics are being rendered at a very low resolution and scaled up
      after the fact.
    * Looking for or changing preferences in Illustrator that might affect it
    * Altering color scheme and various other similar settings
    * CS5 trial version -- same problem as CS4
    * Save the [wordpad] document -> close -> re-open
    * Switching between 'display as icon' and displaying the image
    * Copy & paste from various sources (from AI -> Wordpad,
      MS Word -> Wordpad, etc)
The only way I can get it to render in Wordpad (or quicksilver for that matter)
is if I embed the AI file in a Word/RTF document, then embed that in
the target application (which is awfully convoluted).  Furthermore, if the
embedded Word/RTF file links to the original file, when you open the
document containing the embedded Word/RTF it doesn't attempt to
update from the linked AI file, just the linked Word/RTF file.
I'm sure there's other things we've tried to resolve this, but that's what comes
    to mind right now.
If anyone can help with this, or clue me in that it's a bug in AI, I'd sincerely
    appreciate it.
    -Brian

    Well, no offense
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
None taken.  I'm helping someone else solve a technical problem, I'm just not questioning their approach; I'm not a tech writer, so I'll pass your suggestions on.
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
(...) you are trying  to solve one hell of a crooked workflow on the wrong end and the one  fatal flaw being that you insist on using an office tool to create  layouts and expecting it to render print-ready documents.  That just  cannot work. Even the most stubborn tech writers I occasionally work  with, recognize the need for eventually firing this at InDesign/ InCopy/  Framemaker and associated server versions and fuse the imported RTF/  Word documents and illustrations based on template layouts, scripting  and rule-based formatting, which can all happen automnatically on a  server with the respective software.
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
I was mistaken when I described how things are version controlled.  They would prefer to embed the AI images in each document and have each document be version controlled (that is, if the image changes it should /not/ affect other documents).
However, I wasn't mistaken when I said there are thousands of already developed AI images.  The team working with these images has already procured a volume license for Framemaker and is hesitant to purchase other software unless there's no alternative, or the time savings would justify it.  I wish I could comment on the efficacy of your suggestion, but I'm not a tech writer; I'm unfamiliar with InDesign, InCopy, and FrameMaker.
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
So for what it's worth, you are  probably wasting your time and resources on something that by its nature  starts out with a limited process. I'm not even sure if AI fully  supports OLE. I seem to remember having read about it not supporting  several features and commands....
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
If we export to other formats (eg, pdf) the images render poorly compared to what they look like in AI.
What  do you mean? If they look "bad" in Acrobat or something, then you are  simply using the wrong export settings. which is perfectly fixable.
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
In Acrobat the SV graphics look beautiful at any scale, but if the PDF is OLE embedded in another application it looks terrible.
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
If  they look "bad" within your word documents, then we pretty much return  to what I said in the first paragraph - there's a good chance it's  simply Word rendering the artwork poorly due to its limited abilities of  dealing with graphics of any kind. I would even think that manually  changing the graphics properties would improve appearance then....
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
I'm not an expert on OLE; I made the [potentially bad] assumption that Acrobat would be responsible for rendering the graphic when a PDF is OLE embedded, so the application making use of the object would have limited control over the quality of the image it receives (if my assumption were correct anyway).
I know the host process can specify whether the image is rendered as an EMF or WMF image, otherwise I know very little about the OLE API and what limitations the host process can impose.
I'll keep tinkering to see if the PDF solution can be made to work.
In the meantime, would anyone like to make a determination as to whether this is a real bug in AI or not?

  • MetaData in file not shown in Illustrator cs6 file info panel

I have a command line application that puts meta-data into files.  It was created using the 5.1.2 xmp toolkit.  The metadata is in the file.  I can see it if I just use TextEdit to look at the file.  I can also see the custom metadata in the Illustrator CS5 File Info Panel AND the Photoshop CS6 File Info Panel.  The information doesn't show up in the Illustrator CS6 file info panel.  Any clue why?

The files I am testing with are .jpg's.  They ultimately need to be opened with Illustrator which is why I posted.  I only tested with Photoshop to see what would happen and was pretty surprised to see the data there.  Like I said, it works in CS5 Illustrator, CS6 Photoshop, but the data just doesn't show up in the CS6 Illustrator (in the advanced nor the raw tab), and when I view the .jpg with textedit the data is difinitely there.  Pretty weird.

  • How can I set ACR 5.2 to open RAW files as 16 Bit and not 8?

Whenever I open RAW files in ACR 5.2 they open as 8 bit. I change the bit depth to 16 and work on a file... but when I open my next RAW file it's back to 8.
Is there any way to set ACR so that it always opens my RAW files as 16 Bit.. and saves other settings as well?

Bennett, when you open a raw file in Camera Raw and finish working on it the choices to click on are Open Image, Cancel, and Done. Which one are you clicking on to close the image in ACR? Cancel will do just that. Cancel the changes and the 16/8 bit setting will not be kept. The other two choices (Open Image and Done) will maintain the changes you made and the 16/8 bit setting and the color space should stick for the next image.
