Illustrator brush question

At one point in time I was shown how to change the option on my CS3 Illustrator brushes so that when you draw a line and end it, it stays that way when you begin to draw again. Now I can't figure out how to change it again. The default setting is set that when you draw a line, and then begin a new line close to it they flow together to form a new path. (This is difficult to explain in words).
How do I make it so the lines are all individual objects when you stop drawing?
Thanks,
Nancy

Double-click the Brush Tool and uncheck "Keep Selected" or "Edit Selected Paths" or both. Either option will basically not mess with strokes you've already drawn.

Can parts of an Illustrator brush be removed or erased where they overlap on an angle. Obviously straight portions are not a problem and can be handled by moving the anchor point of the path. However, I have created a pattern brush with 6 parallel lines and I am designing a typeface for a Typography class. There are areas where the brush lines overlap.

Use the appearance palette, and 3 paths for example to make a B.
With appearance, there are so many possibilities.

  • Comic inking in Illustrator; brush changing with fid/smooth options off + DPI detail question

I've used Illustrator for some time using paths, but have decided to start inking artwork as vectors as I like the sharpness and scalability.
One of the issues I've hit is that Illustrator doesn't seem to be responsive using a Wacom 22HD when it comes to line. Firstly, I think I've got the resolution a bit out of whack. Anything above 2 point is blobby and it's hard to do fine details. Is this something to do with my DPI, my artwork not really being big enough? I've never seemed to be able to solve it.
Of course, as the title indicates, I've also got an issue with Illustrator correcting my line all the time. It means I can't do a smooth line using my own stroke - it'll always adjust it to add a bend. I've no idea how to stop this. I've looked at issues like align to pixel, and have set fid/smooth settings to their lowest (fidelity's always 0.5 though). Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

For example - drawing a tapered line in a bitmap program in illustrator, the line isn't effected. What you draw is what you get. Illustrator doesn't do this - it changes the paths after you draw it, so it's not accurate to how you draw.
I'm assuming that I might need to increase the anchors... so there's more detail in the curve? The taper depends on the length of the stroke and pressure of course... I basically want to emulate ink, in vectors. I use another vector program professionally, Storyboard Pro, that doesn't have this problem.
    Thanks btw.

  • A few new Illustrator CS4 questions.

Weird, I just can't figure these out.
First, how do you change the document size/orientation when it's already open? This seemed to be a cinch in all other versions of Illustrator, but now... the new Document set-up menu is quite different.
Related, how does one ADD or SUBTRACT art boards from a document? And remove the art board guides when activated?
How does one prevent Illustrator from opening all documents/a new document, in the same window box, and instead in a separate window box?
If these questions seem rudimentary, let me assure you that I might be having a spaz moment with the new CS4 version of Illustrator, but I've been using the program itself for 10+ years. Maybe I'm becoming lazy and/or senile?

"I have a complex file I created in photoshop with many layers, containing
gradients and blends with no background layer, cropped and feathered edges and
100 opacity. I want to use this for a design in Illustrator CS4 but not at 100%
as I want to type over the top and be able to read. If I simply change the
opacity then the background color in illustrator changes the look of the PS
file. I have tried everything I know, including going back to PS and changing it
there, but the same results. What I ultimately want is a lighter version of the
PS file that is not transparent and allows color behind it to affect the over
vibrancy of the PS file. I'm sure there is a way, but since my knowledge is all
self taught I just don't know the answer. Sure could use some help. Thanks

  • Illustrator issues questions--I need help

    Illustrator CS4, MAC OSX 10.5.8...
After struggling off and on for a few months with Illustrator, I'd like to be able to confirm a few things, so I know I'm not insane.
    1. Canvas/Pasteboard. Is there not an easy way to change that a bit so I can see more difference between the artboard and background? I found a workaround using transparency grid color and then putting a white picture block on the artboard (on a locked layer underneath). This is at least acceptable for various things. Is there some setting I'm missing?  Mostly I'd just like to change the color of the canvas so it stands out more.(And I'd rather have my own choice than whatever the preset tends to be because these blaring white/light screens are killer on the eyes...)
1a. How do I save a "blank" version of the canvas set up I made so my "colorized" canvas  comes up in new documents? Is there a way to set a default document?
1b. Is there a way to make the canvas a bit smaller?
    2. Scrolling. When I select an object and want to move it up the page/artboard, AI doesn't seem to scroll to the area I'm trying to get to. Is there a setting I'm missing or accidentally checked/unchecked? I have to go to the scrollbar and click that and move the item screen-by-screen up the page (alternatively, zoom out, etc.)
2a. I noticed earlier today when trying to sort out text issues (point text, specifically) when I rotated a box... as soon as my cursor hit the edge of the document, the window view practically scrolled out of the universe! Why would it scroll to an out-of-view place in this instance and not scroll when I'm trying to drag an item to an out-of-view place in the document?
    3. I have tons of legacy Freehand 7 files. A decade's worth (not to mention apps prior to that for another decade). Every piece of text comes in as a "text area" box (ordinarily not a problem). But not a one of them shows all the text. I understand this is an issue with legacy files of all types (saving out old FH7 files as an older version of AI yields the same results.)
Pages are cluttered with red + everywhere. Never mind the time sink, does AI have any way to "snap to" regarding a text area box to the text? How do you get multiple text boxes/objects to line up and be the same size? I'm not seeing H x W spec boxes to enter numerics in for text area boxes (as a start). Do I need to use grids or guides for this?
    4. Whatever tool I'm using persists and doesn't change to a regular arrow when I go to click a scrollbar. Program glitch?
    5. How do I set a default font? Or a default doc to open with the desired font preset in it?
    6. When saving out a graphic to be used in another app, is there no "save selection as.."? Or do I need to open a new doc, paste and save from there for each thing? (My master documents for some frequently used items tend to have many items)
I know these are really newbie questions, but what used to be 5 minute tweaks in the past (in Freehand) now turn into all-day ordeals trying to figure out what I consider to be just the basics. So I'm not really learning about all the features and aspects of AI at this point.
Can anyone confirm some of the stuff above or point out what I've missed?
    Thanks

    Hello Scott:
Thanks for reassuring me I'm only partly insane
Thanks also for the tip on setting up a default document. I'll pursue that tomorrow when I'm a little less bleary....
Scrolling-- I have a group (or object selected) and I'm just dragging it along, but it doesn't go farther than the edge of the doc.
I'm a whiz with a trackball, but useless with a scroll wheel.
Ugh on the no default font thing.
Magnifier glass icon on the scrollbar... well, it's disorienting but I'll live.
I see the "save as" and "save a copy"-- but I don't see a "save SELECTION"? Where is that?
Hmmm, yeah, I have some words but I don't think "turd" was one of them  lol. Too mild for this 16-hour day.
Admittedly, I've been more than a little shocked with AI.

  • Illustrator upgrade question

I have a number of Adobe applications installed that I purchased separately:  Illustrator 9, Acrobat Pro 8, Photoshop 6, InDesign CS3 and Dreamweaver CS4.  I can't tell by the Adobe site if I am eligible to upgrade to the newest version of all of these by just purchasing the CS5 Design Premium Upgrade package, or if I need to purchase the CS5 Design Premium Full package because Illustrator is so old.
If anyone can answer this question I would be most grateful.

Thanks Jacob.  I'm stumped as to why (you can go to a page on the Adobe site that will ask you what applications you have) when I put checkmarks in the boxes for the individual applications I have, and click the button for "show me my upgrade options", it lists the CS5 Design Premium Upgrade package as an option.
I guess the other half of my question is, does the upgrade package ask for a previous version serial number for each application in the upgrade package?
    Thanks again!

  • Art brush question

When I use an art brush on a rectangle the corners all have a flat, angled
outside edge. It doesn't matter what art brush I use, it happens with all
of them. I've tried changing the miter type but that doesn't do anything
with art brushes. Is there anyway to get the brushes to 'flow' around the
    corners without the flat spot?
    Thanks!
    Richard

The simplified file in question is here:
    https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B0kosHJIs4dTZTE1MjgyM2UtZmZmNi00ZDMwLThiNzAtZGE1OTI3MzFhN jBm&hl=en&authkey=CJvuvO0B
    Two layers, two objects.
The blue object is the subject of discussion as the art brush.
The "crystalized" oval with the transparent gradient is on a locked layer.
Trying to change the direction of the art brush while the transparent gradient object's layer is locked fails.
Unlock the layer and the direction change works as expected.
(The CS5 symbol sprayer problem has been discussed on this forum in the past, probably NOT related here since I ruled it out by deleting any in the file)

  • Illustrator brush stroke - Character arm rig

I found some fantastic tutorials on how to animated cartoon characters going from Adobe Illustrator to Flash. Very useful.
One tip that was tantalizingly mentioned by not spelled out was how you  can create a character's whole arm as a brush stroke in Illustrator and  then animated it in Flash. See for yourself at the 06:45 marker.
    http://www.youtube.com/user/PeaceLoveAnimation#p/u/0/ywONJam2dSg
Anyone have any idea how you can take this brush stroked arm into Flash and have it be as flexible & keyable?
    Mahalo for sharing!

Still no reply from anyone here.
I continue on in the wilderness alone.
So I experimented with my last theory. Attempted to use the Puppet Pin Tool in After Effects to achieve the flexiblity I'm looking for. FAILED! It essentially creates a rastered video when exported as either FLV or XFL. The XFL version creates an alias halo as well.
Next I attempted to use the very dodgy IK bone tool in Flash. That created all sorts of overlapping compound path problems.
The solution is out there somewhere!
    We've seen it work.
    Still it eludes me.

  • Where is the dry brush in the illustrator brush?

    Hi!

There might be a "Dry brush" in the brushes libraries in artistic libraries. You can access those via the brushes panel (see manual on how to use it)

  • Illustrator brush not working right....

Hello. This is kind of hard to explain but on one of my mac computers, the brush is not following the path that I am drawing out, it seems to draw something completely different, especially if I try to draw like a square or something similar. I tried checking out different settings and comparing to one of my other computers (which drew out just as expected) and couldn't figure it out. Hope this makes sense, need help!

Thanks so much for responding. It's Illustrator CS3 and OS 10.5.4.
The brush is just a default 2.0 oval brush.
Let me know if you need to know any other info...
    I really appreciate it :)

  • Adobe illustrator brush tool size

Hello, I am using illustrator to edit a sketch. But, this problem alwasy happens. I normally use the 3 pt round brush and set the size to about 0.15pt. Well, If i use a different brush and switch back to the normal paintbrush it would always chang it to 1 pt and I would have to make a stroke and set it back to 0.15 pt. Is there a reason why it keeps doing this?
Also, is there a way to erase without it editing the entire path? I know I am using vectors but I don't understand how to fix this.
    Here is an image:
    http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f246/ari4reel/NewCanvas.jpg

I guess you are confusing diameter size of the calligraphic brushes with stroke weight. You change the Diameter of a calligraphic brush after double clicking the brush in the Brushes panel. You change the stroke weight of a path with or without a brush (Basic) applied to it using the Stroke panel. Both the brush Diameter and stroke Weight has combined effect on the path.
You can also increase/decrease the diameter of the Paintbrush Tool without changing the diameter of the brush currently selected in the Brushes panel with 1 pt increments by using the [ and ] keys on your keyboard.
AlstonA wrote:...Also, is there a way to erase without it editing the entire path? I know I am using vectors but I don't understand how to fix this...
If I understand you correctly, select the entire path (one way is clicking it with the black pointer) and press the Delete key on your keyboard. If you just created the path you can use Undo.

  • Illustrator brush problem (bug?)

    Hi!
Can someone please help me with this weird brush behaviour:
I cannot make a clean stroke without having Illustrator messing it up.
I'm using Illustrator CC current version on OS X Mavericks.
    Thanks!!

Are the points connected in the area, try dragging the point where the problem starts with the direct select tool. You may have an errant fill of black.

  • Dual brush question

Here's is my problem (CS6). I have created a number of dual brush presets. When I paint in Photoshop, the dual brush portion of the brush ALWAYS randomly rotates. How do I make the second brush (dual checkmark) on my preset NOT rotate when I paint. The original brush tip shape does not rotate. I just want the dual brush portion always be at one angle.
    Thanks!

I have tried everything you mentioned above but no fix. I tried it both on PC (windows 7) and Mac (10.8.5) platforms and in CS5/CS6. Has anyone else experienced this with dual brush? Does it always randomly rotate?
I wonder if it is a system limitation. Can someone try this out and let me know if it works on later version of Photoshop?
I've attached an example of the problem: The brush tip shape is the soft round. The dual brush is the star. As you can see the star rotates randomly. I just want the star to remain at an upright angle (or even at the direction of my pen tilt would be nice). Bottom line is I want to control the angle of the dual brush.

  • Illustrator CS Question -- don't laugh!

    Hi Everyone!
Yea, I know I'm behind the times on my home iMac*. Someday, I will upgrade. Meanwhile I have a pressing dilemma!
My question: Every now and then, I hit a button that I shouldn't have... and apparently, I've done it again. Now when I draw my text or graphic boxes, I no longer have the 'mid-point' anchors, handles, or side points... which I can pull out to scale horizontally or vertically. Does anyone know how to get those 'mid-point' handles to show up so I 'click and drag' to resize a box?
A straight arrow over any side points will let you elongate that side. Nope, not happening -- they aren't there!
    * When working on site, I work on CS4 and beginning to learn CS5.
    Thanks for the help!
