Illustrator cannot find linked images

Illustrator CS3 cannot find linked images that are stored on another server volume.
Example: My Illustrator file is stored on one server volume and my images on another.
Both volumes are mounted on the desktop but, Illustrator asks to locate linked images
when I try to open the file. After locating one linked file all others linked to this document
are then found. If I save and close this file and reopen it, it will ask again to locate the linked images.
System specifics:
Illustrator CS3
Mac OS 10.5.6
Intel PowerMac

One thing you can do to save a lot of disc space is to make aliases of the pictures you're using and place them instead of the originals. Keep the aliases in the same folder as your artwork. Works fine as long as you've got the server with the originals mounted and you avoid having to search for the originals, just go to the aliases instead. A lot of people seem to have forgotten about aliases but they're an incredible time and space saver. We use them all the time.

Finding linked images

Hi,
I'm using InDesign CS 5.5 and I want to quickly find where my linked images are located in order to be able to easily replace them with another one.
To do this, I use the links palette menu and the "lock-symbol". When doing so, the Search Window opens and InDesign automatically takes me to the folder where the image is saved.
However, in InDesign CS4 InDesign used to take me automatically to the linked image, whereas now it only takes me to the folder in which the image is saved and I have to scroll through it to find the linked image.
Does anyone know how to get this same function in CS 5?

Once you've said Relink, a regular file open dialog opens for you to choose the file to relink. If you just click the Open button in that dialog it chooses the filename of the link you selected in ID, if it is present.

Spotlight cannot find my images

Hello guys,
I have foudn the answer to my question in the existing posts, so I'm trying to explain what happens to me.
Spotlight cannot find my pictures (eg containing 'cat') whereas they are or tagged, titled or commented with 'cat' in iPhoto... I need to re-aply the whole keywords to each image so that Spotlight can find it.
Have anybody allready experienced this pb & solved it? Thanks for your answers & sorry about my bad english.

Guillaume, since I think you just want to find your images (and not get into an extended, and increasingly arcane, discussion of Spotlight and its potentialities/defects) I suggest you use a search tool other than Spotlight. These would include File Buddy and EasyFind. There may be others as well.
EasyFind or FileBuddy *will* find what you are looking for.

When making a slideshow in iPhoto some iTunes files can no longer be found (cannot find link). How can I relink iphoto to the moved itunes files?

Hello everyone :-)
I am Using Iphoto 09 ver 8.1.2 & itunes ver. 10.2.2 in this situation.
I have recently moved my iphoto library & Itunes library files to a large external hard drive.
I have successfully set the computer to read / run both libraries from the hard drive & they are working well as a stand alone. ( I Have done this before)
Unforntualey this time I foolishly moved some itunes album folders around from compulations / various artists into the main media file before checking into what the ramifications would be.
After searching on here I learned that was not advised as itunes would not be able to automaticly find them since I moved them.
In itunes clicked on some of the exclamtion marks of the songs that I moved & linked them up to the main media folder so they could be now found by itunes. I believe itunes asked to look there in that location for all missing files & I selected that option.
It appears to have worked as when I click on them in itunes they now play.. yeah!
But now I am finding that when I try to add certain songs for slideshows in iphoto & imovie that those moved songs cannot be found by those programs :-(
( I assume the same would be true for iDVD)
So my questions are... Is there now a way to have those other programs find the moved songs?
I do have a older backup of my itunes media & I can try & move the album folders back to the original place they where by comparing the two but it is a very large library of 40k songs... so I thought to ask the knowledge & wisdom of the community before I attempted any further fixes.
It would take a bit of time but it could be done & I don't want to just use the older copy of my itunes as I have made many additions of albums to the library & added allot of album artwork as well. (Stuff that "itunes" & "tune up" couldn't automatically find)

Try the following: delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Also delete the com.apple.iApps.plist file from the same Preferences folder. Then launch iTunes and then iPhoto. See if that will restore the links.

Photo cd contains only "alias" files and I cannot find my images....

A few months ago, I burned a few photo cds. I created these by dragging the files from my camera's memory card to the cd folder and then burned them. I thought I was being careful and checked each cd after it was complete to confirm the photos were all there. At the time all looked fine. I then erased the camera memory card to create more usable space. Now those same cds only contain alias files and my images cannot be located in any files or folders. Can I recover or did I make a mistake with something that used to be so simple?? Thank you for any suggestions and help with this.

Your cd's only had aliases burned to them. When you checked the contents of a burned CD the memory card would have been still mounted, so the aliases automatically found the original files and opened them. This will only work if the memory card with the original photos is mounted.
The correct procedure is to create a Burn Folder. (File / New Burn folder). With the memory card connected, drag the photos to the Burn folder. You can rename the folder, say Photos. When you are ready to burn, go to File menu and and you will see the option: Burn Photos to Disk.
After the burn, you can trash the Burn folder, or reuse it.
In fact the Burn folder also contains just aliases, but when you burn, the original items are found and burned to the CD.
p.s. To copy the actual files (rather than aliases) from the memory card you have to hold the Option key down when you drag and drop.

I have downloaded Pushnote but cannot find link in browser bar.

I have downloaded Pushnote for Firefox but the linking star os not showing up in the browser taskbar that shows other links.

If you just download them then they are in your download folder or where ever you specified for them to be saved to. Now you need to install them.

Illustrator Problem linking image

Problem: Working with Illustrator, when I link images twice or three times suddenly the link button does not respond. I have to close Illustrator and open it again and then I can use the link button again only twice.
Any suggestion?

Thanks for the response. First of all, you'll have to excuse me if I get a few points wrong, as I'm not too familiar with Illustrator. However, in answer to your questions;
The layers panel is showing "<Linked File>" next to an empty white box.
Turning off preview does show the boxes you describe.
I've no idea how to go about checking if an image is beyond the mask bounds. However, I've used the same image for testing across accounts and it displays fine on those that aren't having this issue.
Also, in the top left corner of Illustrator, the name os the linked image does display and the options available when clicking that do seem correct and working. Relinking from there does nothing, but I can open the image for editing etc. None of this helps in getting the image to display though.
As for the server side, we have always used a Mac server at the same version as the clients.

I manually rebuilt my iPhoto, but cannot find newest roll of images

A few weeks back I noticed after syncing my iPhone that a majority of my pictures (or thumbnails) were blank, gray squares where the images used to be. However, the weirdest part was that I could see all the thumbnails to the newest roll that was added to my iPhoto. I read some of the forums here about how to fix my iPhoto and eventually realized I had to manually rebuild my iPhoto library. Just in case I wouldn't lose any images, I copied my entire iPhoto library and put it in another folder. However, after rebuilding my library, I noticed that the newest roll that I could see are no longer in my library and I can't find them anywhere. I went back to my time machine file from before rebuilding the library, and when I brought that back, the images were still missing. I have no idea where they could have possibly have gone and while all my other photos are now visible in iPhoto, I would like to know if there is any way of retrieving the images that I lost after rebuilding my library. I would really appreciate any help or advice as to how to proceed.

Search your computer, external hard drives and your copy of the iPhoto Library for the missing images as described in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1995
If you cannot find the images that would suggest they have been removed from the computer (deleted).
You might have turned off the copy to iPhoto when importing images. Check iPhoto > Preferences > Advanced > Make sure that "Copy Items to iPhoto Library" is indeed checked. With this option unchecked, images are not imported to iPhoto, instead they stay wherever they are when imported (like on the camera for example).
If you don't find the images by searching then data recovery would be the next step I would take.
If the images were recently taken with your camera you could recover them (Assuming you've already deleted them from the camera. If you haven't just re-import them.) from the media card using a product like this: http://joesoft.com/products/klix.php

I'm creating a webpage with Notepad and wanting to see illustrations using my browser, i have loaded the text html files and that works fine however when i try to load images using this command...<img src="life.jpg" width="403" height="403"> it fails to load...error says cannot find file however the file it says it cannot find is the correct name and the image is located in the same folder save as html...is this a pc security problem? Tried different images...saving as jpg, html...thanks

Any errors in the Web Developer > Error Console (Ctrl+Shift+J) or Web Console (Web Developer > Web Console;Ctrl+Shift+K)?

Can you post (part of) the code?
Make sure that you are using forward slashes in the file paths and not backslashes.
Check the "Tools > Page Info > Media" tab for blocked images (scroll through all the images with the cursor Down key).

Image Problem: CorelDraw handles but Illustrator cannot

Hi,
We work for News media(print), we have subscribed for graphics data from another firm, this firm produces graphics for Web/Print.
Today we have receieved some graphics in PDF format(often), These graphics are usually done in Coreldraw or Illustrator.
We have to change certain spelling errors and colours to suit our print, i used to open the pdf in illustrator and change the colour and font, these graphics also contain images.
Everything was going fine, until now almost all the graphics (pdf format) when open in Illustrator, the images in the graphic appear as torn or to say corrupted(apperances), but the same graphic(in pdf format) when opened in Coreldraw, the images in graphics appear fine.
Why this problem happens in Illustrator.
We use Illustrator CS3 and CorelDraw X4.
Some of the techie guys told me it has to do with resolution of the images where Coreldraw handles pictures well of low resolution and illustrator cannot.
Here below the first graphic which was open in Illustrator shows the images in graphics as torn but in bottom graphic which was openen in Coreldraw shows images are fine.
Any solution.

In my experience, when you open a PDF file made with QuarkXpress, CorelDraw or other program other than Illustrator, you may experience problems opening them in illustrator. This is due to the way a PDF was saved and/or the original program.
The most common issue is the color, specially when the designer used RGB instead of CMYK color system.
This does not mean that Illustrator is the problem. Again, sometimes depends on how the PDF file was created. But also you have to considered that Adobe Illustrator CS3 have some minor issues handling PDF files (CS4 version is worse)
QuarkXpress is very picky handling the fonts. For example: Quark does not accept Helvetica font provide by different companies. In other words, if you Helvetica Regular font from two different companies the file can have some conflicts: therefore will affect the PDF file creating a problem when open it in illustrator. Illustrator ignores the company or font type (Postscript, True, or Open) and replaced it with the Helvetica font that you have in your system.
As you can see in your provided samples, the text looks out of place, bolder, bigger, etc., and the colors have shifted.
One of the solution I think can help you, is to ask the designers that when possible supply the artwork using Postscript fonts, True Fonts, or Open Fonts. Whichever works for you the best. Also give a set of specific fonts to be use in their projects.
But you can always ask the designer to correct the typos and send a PDF file with outlined fonts.
I think is best to keep using both programs and use them per PDF file furnished. But for printing, you cannot accept low resolution images (300 PDI only).
Portable Document Format files are good, but needs a lot of improvement for the printing industry. All the software and computer companies should agree in one standard color system, link file handling, etc. to avoid the problems that all of us we are having.

Cannot find BLOB Download Format Mask link.

I cannot find the "BLOB Download Format Mask" link and I am using a current version of APEX. can someone tell me where I might find it? I have followed the instructions and see no such link under Page Item, Source. Please help!

Yes, I have created a form on a table and that table contains a column of datatype BLOB. I followed the APEX advanced tutorial for uploading and downloading files. Now I want to be able to display the (Blob) images that I have uploaded.
As I research the topic, I get the feeling that displaying the BLOB image can only be done in APEX 3.1 and up. Is this true? I have that version of APEX installed on my laptop and have successfully completed the "Defining and Viewing BLOB Data in Oracle Application Express 3.1" tutorial found here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/apex/apex31nf/apex31blob.htm
But I could not do it on the company server that runs APEX 3.0
Even if I did get the approval to have the company APEX application upgraded to 3.1, there still is the issue of scaling the images so that they are not so large. I understand that there is a UTIL.APEX function "GET_BLOB_FILE_SRC" that would do this for me. I read the documentation at:

DPI of a linked image, illustrator - extendscript

Hi,
I am creating a script that needs to be able to find the DPI of a linked image. I presume there must be some way of getting to this data as it is in the links window in illustrator.
I do also need to get other information in that window (colour space & scale), but the DPI is the one im struggling with at the moment.
Mac 10.9, illustrator CS6, extendscript

After looking at the XMP i have discovered that only Tiff files have the relevent data that i need and as there will be multiple file formats that the script will need to read this is not an option.
I have used the bridge talk script from the other post that you linked and adapted it to search through all files in the document and quit photoshop when finished.
One last question, is there anyway to find out if photoshop is already running? i dont want it to close the application if the user already had it open before running.

Resizing linked images in Illustrator results in choppy looking images

I have been using illustrator and CS software for many years now, and I have one major problem with the CS5 version of illustrator:
I cannot resize any linked images without compermising the images quality. I am a professional and have a deep understanding of illy but cannot figure this out!
Details:
-I am not trying to size UP. I'm Talking about taking an image and shrinking with the transform tool.
-The image also looks choppy when I rotate the image.
-This resizing issue doesn't have anything to do with how it renders in illustor. If I export a tiff file I get the same problem.
-I am not talking about dramatic resizing, just within 50% or even less of the original size
My workaround has been to export a tiff at 300dpi and then editing the tiff in photoshop by placing the linked image on a second layer and positioning it to cover up the "choppy" image. This is obvisouly a terrible work flow but it has worked so far.
Another workaround would be to resize the image in photoshop first and then place it in illustrator at 100% the size so I don't need to resize anymore.

By resizing a placed image in Illie you are only changing the size, not the content of the image. So if you have an image that is 300 ppi in original size and scale it by 50% in Illie you end up with 600 ppi. What it looks like on screen is not the point, it's the content that matters. You can physically reduce the size of an image in Photoshop. You can also control the final ppi of images for output by the compression method you select when exporting to Acrobat.
