Illustrator CC 18.0.0 Snapping/Smart Guides STILL Broken?!

I know this issue has had some coverage but I'm still extremely frustrated that with all the new features in AI, snapping to guides, anchors, lines, or whatever, is still not precise. I just don't understand why they can't seem to get this right. What is the point of snapping if it's always going to be off by a few thousandths of a pixel? Working with what is supposed to be the world's best illustration application, I still have to make adjustments with the transform panel. Isn't it about time they fix this issue, or am I the crazy one?

I gave a couple of examples but I'll go ahead and repeat it:
Say you have 2 points that aren't joined and you want to join them. So, you grab an anchor, drag it over (holding 'ctrl' so it snaps to other anchors) and as you get close it snaps and says 'anchor', then you select both points with a fence, then join them. Now deselect then select the new point and drag it. At least 25% of the time, it doesn't join two points, it averages them, creating a third point. This is especially frustrating when joining paths that have curves, and that mask or reveal other objects. I do a lot of designs that must be pixel-precise and that is a lot more work than it should be in AI.
I have used several other vector programs and none of them have this weird, inconsistent behavior.
Here's another example: Create a rectangle 100x100. Then drag a guide to one side, then the other. The guides should be exactly 100px apart, right? Maybe. Delete the rectangle and draw a line between the two guides. Chances are they are no longer 100px apart. They are 99.003 or 101.003 or something, making AI the worst tool ever for doing website mockups. It's actually less trouble for me to bang out CSS in Brackets and do mockups that way... but not because Brackets is meant for that, but because AI sucks for it, and that's idiotic.
I am seriously considering ending my CC subscription and going with a combo of open source apps. I mean, if I'm going to struggle with something, I'd prefer for that effort to go to learning something new, not fighting the same fight over and over, for years and years, on something that should be easily fixed.

  • Illustrator CC Free Transform not Snapping to Guides, No Smart Guides

    The Free Transform tool in Illustrator CC won't snap to Guides, and Smart Guides don't seem to work either.
    I have all the options checked in Preferences > Smart Guides > Display Options and the Snapping Tolerance turned way up.
    In CS6, Free Transform with Smart Guides allowed you to snap to paths, points, alignments and guides.
    Also: Any way to hide/minimize the Free Transform popup?

    James,
    Depending on the urgency of your plight, you may await some cleverer suggestions, or read on.
    When seems to be wrong for no apparent reason, and it is not limited to certain (existing) documents, you may consider the following (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps, unless someone comes up with a cleverer suggestion.
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file; 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences:
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder Other options (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

  • Temporarily disable snap/smart guides

    I saw that there was an old post on this with an elaborate workaround, but I'm hoping there's something new in CS5.
    Is there a button that you can hold that will temporarily disable the snap to and smart guide features so that you can move an object freely? What I'm looking for is the same function as holding the ctrl key while working in InDesign. It seems like it would be really useful to be able to do that and I feel like I'm missing something obvious, so sorry if this is a silly question.

    Can someone please point me to WHERE in the AI CS5 help this is actually documented? I've spent the last 15 minutes scoring the hotkeys, and the "Selecting and arranging objects" portions of the help file and no dice. Is Adobe really just counting on the community to do its dirty work of documenting their software properly. This isn't an MMO folks, where it's "part of the game" to figure out how stuff is done. spend more time on your docs.
    Note: I'm not saying it ain't there - I'm saying if it is, it ain't logical or cross-referenced. And god forbid one should try to use your Search feature!

  • 10.5.1 - Smart folders still broken

    Hi,
    Here are the symptoms I am experiencing, wondering if anyone else still is.
    1: Make a smart folder, with the only criteria being the subject. Everytime I try tomake this, the select lists just goes back to 'From' and won't say on 'Subject'
    2: If i do a search, then click the 'save' button, nothing happens. The button depresses, but I'm not asked to create a new smart folder or anything.
    Idea's ?
    Thanks folks.

    Another clue: I had the exact same problem when I updated my BlacBook to 10.4.11
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1241227&start=0&tstart=0
    In Leopard - even after a reformat and virgin install - it did the same thing: cut out every few minutes and lose the network connection. In Airport Utility under Leopard it can't even find my ABS (older, not Extreme), though oddly enough it can connect - briefly - before dropping again and then reconnecting, over and over.
    Booting from a 10.4.10 partition with the laptop in the same physical location results in very strong signal and perfect WiFi connection.
    This leads me to believe a core piece of system code changed in 10.4.11 and was carried over into Leopard (or perhaps vice versa, given the timing of the Tiger update). So it's back to 10.4.10 for me until/unless this gets fixed.

  • Smart Playlists still broken in 9.0.1

    Hey folks,
    I know that there are a few threads about this problem in iTunes 9.0, but I'm starting a new thread to inform that the problem persists in 9.0.1.
    The release notes for 9.0.1 read, "Fixes a problem syncing Podcasts in playlists to iPod or iPhone."
    Well, it didn't fix my problem. My problem is that I have a smart playlist of podcasts that I sort by release date. I have live updating enabled. This works fine in iTunes, but on my iPhone, the items in the playlist are completely out of order, not arranged by release date. Please help.

    Yes, "me too" on my iPod Touch 3G with 3.1.1 and iTunes 9.0.1
    In addition to the out of order Smart playlists, here is something else odd.
    I have a playlist that looks for playcount is not 0. As soon as the track is played, it was dropping off of the playlist. Now, what happens is tracks do not drop off individually as played but rather when the last track in the list has played. So, in other words, if you play the last track of this type of list, go out and then back into the list, it drops off.
    REALLY ANNOYING, APPLE!
    FIX IT!

  • Contacts Smart Groups Still Broken in Mountain Lion

    I have been waiting for Mountain Lion, in hope that Address Book / Contacts bugs would be fixed.  Regretfully, they have not.  Smart groups using the query "not a member of" still do not work.  It would have been wonderful it it did.

    I have tons of photos in my camera roll on both my iPhone and iPad, so this is not the problem.
    Also, the cable connector is not the problem, since iTunes detects the iPhone and iPad 100% of the time correctly. The problem appears isolated to Image Capture (and iPhoto).

  • Smart Guides.

    Our school purchased the CS5 Web Design Suite at the educational price. I'm running a MacBook Pro w/ 10.6.8.
    I'm doing a tutorial on the Illustrator, and I cannot get the smart guides to work. I've activated them through the "View" drop down menu, and I set up what I wanted in the "Preferences" under "Smart Guides."
    Nothing happens with the smart guides.
    Perhaps related: when I go to set a guide I hold the shift key so that the guides will snap to each tick mark on the ruler. But nothing happens.
    Thank you for your help, and smiles to all.

    @Risa: Yes to both.
    @Monika: Great questions. When I set a guide I want the edge of the secret blue box surrounding the object I'm moving to attach to that guide so that I can be precise; instead, the object that I am dragging just goes past the guide I set as if it was not there.
    Here are my settings.
    @Jet: I have those settings, see above.
    Thank you all for the responses and questions.
    Big smiles to you.

  • Cannot center Smart Guides exactly? CS6

    Hello:                                                                                    Level: Newbie  OS: Windows 7 64 bit   Illustrator CS6
    I am learning about Smart Guides but have found myself a bit perplexed.
    I have drawn a Circle with the Ellipse tool by clicking and then entering the values: 432x432
    Then I hover the mouse over the "center" square which reads: x:260 & y:259.5 which doesn't make sense to me ~ if it is the Center shouldn't the x & y values match? Any way, so then I manually type in the x & y value boxes 260.000 and they both stay at 260.
    However, when I pull out the Smart Guides and place the horizontal guide over the center the x & y values also do not match and so I enter the number manually but the values will not stay where I set them.
    e.g. The x value states: 259.5 and the y value: 260.000 and no matter how many times I reset the x value it always reverts back to 259.5 ... ???
    The vertical smart guide is also off by rougly .5
    Now, since I am attempting to make a symmetrical object ... won't this differentiation cause "eye sores" once the artwork is done?
    I am (still) attempting to construct a compass with a rose, increments, needle etc. etc. and my first attempt ... and I quote the awesome Jacob ...
    looks as if I have dropped it on the floor
    So, after all that ramble'n ... I suppose I would like to know from others if this is just the way things are and rather I am suppose to just deal with things being a "bit" off??
    Thank you for your time
    hope you're having a great day/night

    Hey Jacob ...
    So, I did the Move the Folder but ... dang'it I'm slow at times ... and so, I am unsure if I followed your directions right ...
    I signed into my computer under admin and then when I searched my C drive for the Adobe Illustrator CS6 Settings folder ... two folders came up
    One for the Admin account and one for mine
    So, I right clicked on both of them and chose ... Move to Desktop ... placing both folders on the Desktop of the Admin
    Then I restarted my computer and logged in under my user name not as the Admin & then opened Illustrator but I am still having the same problems.
    The Align tool doesn't Align so I gotta eye things out. The first compass I showed you was a result of "listening" to illustrators X/Y/H/W settings.
    And when I have the Align to Pixel Grid ON I still do not have integer values when they ought to very well be integers.
    So, I just hoping I didn't go about things the right way.
    I am now going to go log back into my pc as an Admin and undo the Moved folders and give things a go again.
    Jacob ... you've been such a huge support to me that I cannot thank you near enough!!
    PS. to check things I made a circle that's 300x300 > the W = 300 and H = 300 and the X = 250 and the Y = 250 < the Align to Pixel Grid is on
    Then I choose the Line tool and make a Line of 20px > then directly below I make an other Line of 20px with the Align to Pixel Grid on ...
    I select the top 20px Line and the Values are: X = 249.5 and Y = 132  H = < Align Pixel Grid is on
    I select the bottom one and X = 250 and Y = 358 and H = 20 and W = 0 < Aliign Pixel Grid on
    Then I Group them both and the values are: X = 249.5 and Y = 245 and H = 246 and W = 0
    Then I Rotate by 20 degrees and the first set Values are: same as just above
    The next set Values are: X = 249.5 and the rest is the same as above
    The next set Values are: X = 249.5 and Y = 245 and H = 231.164 and W = 84.137
    As I go around the H & W values keep changing. After all you've patiently taught me ... they shouldn't change? OR the H & W do change b/c the bounding boxes outline the Path and Not the line itself ... right?
    The 5th copy Values change to: X = 249.5 and Y = 244.999 and so on from there. Not to beat a dead horse but is this how it ought to be?
    Uhhh sigh ... ...

  • Smart Guides able to recognise parallel lines

    Here is a feature I would love to see Adobe include as an update for Illustrator CS5; the ability for the smart guides to recognise when a stroke being drawn or moved becomes parallel to the stroke nearest to it, [perhaps this distance could be adjusted via Preferences].
    At the moment the smart guides tell us when our object is in alignment with others, but for working with the pen tool, a quick appearance of a smart guide line overlapping a stroke which is currently lying parallel to another stoke would be a lovely feature, and would enable much time-saving for things like architectural  drawings, where ensuring accuracy is paramount.
    Personally I'm amazed to find myself on the "suggest new features" page for a CS5 application. When I tried CS4 I was in awe, it was so obviously superior to CS3, which in itself was truly revolutionary to someone who had only used Photoshop 10 until CS3. I couldn't see that there was room to go further from CS4 -but you amazed us all Adobe: CS5 is truly awesome. I'm still a student right now -but I know that although there is other graphic design software out there, without becoming totally fluent in the CS suite, finding a job would be even more difficult.
    Thank you to everyone at the Adobe team for your truly revolutionary software...........but please, please could you write a script or something so that the smart guides recognise a nearby line as being parallel or not.

    I think you are getting confused with Illustrator - Smart Guides work differently in Illustrator. 45% angles would suggest that you are expecting Photoshop Smart Guides to work the same way, and as far as Im aware, they don't

  • Smart guides and snap to point not working in Adobe Illustrator CC 2014

    Hello,
    I am having a lot of issues with Illustrator CC 2014 and the Smart Guides. Every time I try and snap one object to another or snap an object to a guide, the object snaps either above or below the guide/object but never snaps correctly. This also happens when I am zoomed in all the way!
    I do not have align to pixel grid or snap to grid turned on.

    David,
    I do not have align to pixel grid or snap to grid turned on
    It sounds as if Illy thinks the former.
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;

  • Illustrator CC2014 does snap the Cut tool to path intersections w/ Smart Guides on

    This is driving me crazy. Is there something I'm overlooking here or is this (essential) feature missing in CC2014?

    Hey Jacob,
    This applies to all paths.
    You can try it for yourself - just draw two intersecting lines with the Line Segment tool, turn on smart guides, and try to snap Cut to the intersection.
    This is kind of driving me crazy because it means to cut lines / objects exactly, I have to draw another shape, snap an anchor to the intersection (at least this works), send it to the back and then snap the Cut tool to the new anchor.

  • Smart Guide/Snap to point not working

    Hi
    I am trying to remove a circular shape from a rectangle in illustrator, the retangles width is 10px and the diameter of the circle is 13px, I centre the circle ontop of the rectangle ( or I appear to)  but when I use the Shape mode tool minus front, the circle is no longer centred ( see images)
    I have tried switching off smart guides and snap to grid and am still having the same problem.
    In the above image you can see once I have divided the 13px circle from the rectangle it has moved off to one side.
    Also when I am trying to manually place the circle ( rather than using the centre guides ) I can only move it by a large degree it alway moves further than I move the mouse, could this be because of a pixel grid? I do not think I am using this. ( can see in the above image where I am trying to place the circle and when I let go of the mouse, the grey circle is where it lands
    From the 2 images below you can see that there is a 1px difference on either side of the extracted circle I was trying to get centred
    I should mention that the 'Align to pixel grid' in the transform menu is inactive when I am trying to do this, as I initially thought that this may be the cause of my problems, but it made no difference

    Rebecca,
    So why does the minus front tool mess up alignment so much?
    No clue. I believe this issue has never been reported.
    At a first glance, it really looked like an Align to Pixel Grid issue, and also the fact that it works when both object widths have an odd (or even) number of pixels.
    But that is apart from the fact that you stated that it was off. If it were on, Align to Pixel Grid would apply to the circle, to the rectangle, or to both.
    Obviously, it is possible to (direct) select each and check. It is also possible to check the Y value of the centre for both in the Transform palette and see that they are actually identical before applying the Pathfinder.
    And if on, Align to Pixel Grid should also affect/destroy the Object>Path>Divide Objects Below way. And it should make it impossible to even place both objects centre aligned when one is an odd number of pixels wide and the other is an even number wide.
    As the issue is described, it may indicate some Pathfinder>Minus Front malfunctioning.
    It may be worth trying some of the following things (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps (the following is a general list of things you may try when it is not in a specific file; 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences):
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer;
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, other items may also be relevant);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6, and reinstall.

  • CS4 Smart Guides; snapping one anchor to another

    Just upgraded to CS4, I *really* can't get my head around these Smart Guides.
    I've been in the preferences and tried every combination of settings, tell me if this is correct:
    If I draw two boxes, grab the anchor point in the corner of one box, and try and drag it to the anchor of the other box, Smart Guides will no longer snap to that anchor.
    This is getting super frustrating, thanks for any help if I'm missing something.

    Dr Griggs wrote:
    Thanks for the video, but you mentioned in it you had to "Hold down Command" to make it work. I found out that was the answer for CS4. It's just super disappointing that there's no toggle for this.
    To my understanding, no version of Illustrator before has ever made you do this. So that's great, after upgrading I have an extra button press to my common workflow. Awesome.
    Now if you asked me why I would have told you that I had been in the rectangle tool so I was holding don the Command key to switch to the direct selection tool.
    It is not necessary to hold down the command key in order for this to work. You can use the direct select tool as well if you have switched to it but I use the command key so that I cn have a different too selected such as the rectangle or pen tool when I am drawing.
    Snap to point works as expected.
    I hope this answers your question. Would you like to see a video? Keep in mind the selection tool would need to have the bounding box hidden or you will resize it if you try to drag a corner.But that would have been the case in any version.

  • Weird smart guides snapping behavior

    i've been using cs4 for a little while and i've been noticing some annoying things about smart guides. when i start illustrator everything works fine, the smart guides snap to edges correctly, but as i continue to work with illustrator the smart guides snapping function gets less reliable. my snapping tolerance is 3pt which shouldnt be the problem. as you can see in the attached image, the distance between the edges of the two rectangles is less than 3pts (i'm zoomed in). does this happen to you guys?
    thanks for your help!

    oh shoot, i just answered my own question. i was trying to figure out what the heck was going on and i started holding down different modifiers to see what happens (shift, control, alt) and i found something new! wow! i'm so excited!! holding down control when using smart guides gives snapping preference to the edge you are holding with the mouse! i think this should be default, but in any case its good to know it aint broke!
    thanks anyways!

  • Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 – Smart Guides Not Working

    I have been having an issue with Illustrator CC 2014's smart guides not snapping to other objects. In this instance I dragged used the 'Selection Tool' to drag one of the 8 points of the bounding box to the second square.
    This also happens when trying to resize items to guides, Illustrator 'snaps' the object to the guide, but it is not inline!
    I have noticed that this issue does not occur when resizing or moving groups of objects groups of objects. It seems that the two different types of bounding boxes are the issue?

    There seems to be a problem with rectangle shapes and smart guides. The problem has been reported in the forum some time ago.
