Illustrator CC Free Transform not Snapping to Guides, No Smart Guides

The Free Transform tool in Illustrator CC won't snap to Guides, and Smart Guides don't seem to work either.
I have all the options checked in Preferences > Smart Guides > Display Options and the Snapping Tolerance turned way up.
In CS6, Free Transform with Smart Guides allowed you to snap to paths, points, alignments and guides.
Also: Any way to hide/minimize the Free Transform popup?

James,
Depending on the urgency of your plight, you may await some cleverer suggestions, or read on.
When seems to be wrong for no apparent reason, and it is not limited to certain (existing) documents, you may consider the following (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps, unless someone comes up with a cleverer suggestion.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file; 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences:
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder Other options (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
Even more seriously, you may:
6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

  • Illustrator CC Free Transform and Snapping

    It seems that in CC the Free Transform tool does not snap to grid when resizing (for example) a rectangle. If I have "Snap to Grid" turned on, it only is taking effect with new objects getting drawn. Am I understanding this correctly? If I draw a rectangle, and want to reshape/resize it to fit the grid, how do I do this? It's a bit embarrassing asking this question, but CC seems to have changed some things from CS6.

    I may have found a solution.
    I called a buddy of mine to help tackle this with me.
    Turns out, I'm trained to use the Free Transform tool in order to resize objects (and this has always worked in the past, that's what I've always done...hit the "E" key and then resize the object).
    NOW, you're not supposed to use the Free Transform tool for precise snapping (which, I...I don't even have words for, because there's no reason to remove the actual option of wanting a precise move (resize) to be made...so dumb).
    In order to precisely resize objects (with Smart Guides on), you must first make sure you are showing your bounding box (an option I previously had hidden 95% of the time because I hated looking at it).  So View > Show Bounding Box.  Then, with your regular ol' Selection Tool (V), you select the object, then hover over the anchor point and it will allow you to resize with the Smart Guides (and it works as well as it USED to work).
    The stupid thing is this works exactly the same way as the Free Transform tool...so, I guess, the Free Transform tool is now relegated to performing transforms only when you want to ignore precision altogether (which for me...is never).  I'd like a refund for that portion of the software that I'm paying for...or something.  I don't get it.
    Anyway, overly long story short.  Turn on your bounding box, use your selection tool to resize (instead of hitting E and using the free transform tool) and your resizes/transforms will align to your grids, guides and in accordance with the smart guides.
    Finally...

  • Free transform and snapping (to guides)

    I use Photoshop CS5 and Windows 7.
    I need to free transform a layer, each corner separately (holding the CTRL-Key). It's a kind of perspectivistic transformation (mapping cover-art on a 3D-rendering of a book) and the resulting form is not a rectangle. I created crossing guides on every corner of the book so i can do this multiple times quickly and accurately. Unfortunately Photoshop for Windows does not snap to the guides when dragging single corners with the CTRL-Key.
    I tried the same on a Mac with CS4 and it worked without any problems. Photoshop snaps to every guide in free transform mode
    Please help this is driving me crazy!

    Shame on me, I didn't think of that – using "Distort" is a workaround indeed.
    I'd prefer to do it with the Ctrl-Key though as its much faster – is there a way to disable "turning off snapping" when holding down Ctrl?

  • CS3 Illustrator and Free Transform Tool

    I have a problem with the function Free Transform Tool in Illustrator to OS X. After clicking on the icon Free Transform Tool object can become distorted. I got command key, I'm with the cursor in the corner, but does not work. Tried the instructions here: http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/Illustrator/13.0/help.html?content=WS714a382cdf7d304e7e07 d0100196cbc5f-646d.html, but it also does not work. By someone he did not know where could be the problem? Thanks a lot.

    Use Effect>3D>Rotate to rotate the PNG into a perspective plane. It is not as accurate as the distortion mesh method, but it might work for you.
    Alternatively, you can use the distortion mesh method and edit the mesh with the mesh tool directly. It is tedious because you'll have o move the anchor points and direction points separately (The free transform tool does this for you in one step).
    A third option is to download the 30-day free trial of AICS4. You can make the distortion then open the file in CS3.
    I don't have CS4 either and I am forced to keep 2 versions of Illustrator on my machine because of this bug.
    Adobe should not force users to upgrade, just to get a bug fix.

  • Illustrator CC will not snap to grid, no matter what!

    Hello,
    I apologize if this seems a redundant post, I've read many people asking this but have seen no definitive answer, so I wanted to simplify the question and see if we can get a real answer:
    I'm using Illustrator CC, and snap to grid DOES NOT WORK FOR ANYTHING. For instance, if I try to draw out a rectangle, the top left corner will not snap to the nearest grid where I start to drag it out. For another instance, if I use the pen tool, it WILL NOT snap to grid. To be clear, I have "snap to grid" checked under the view menu, and do not have "snap to point" or "smart guides" turned on. Alternatively, any combination of these being on/off still will not yield a snap to grid. I have also experimented with the "align new objects to pixel grid" under the "transform" window on and off, which did not help either. Even with that checked on, existing objects will not snap to the grid. In short, nothing snaps to the grid - this is occurring on 2 different computers, one at home, one at work, both running the same version of illy CC. I don't get it, it seems like there are a lot of people having this problem but I cannot for the life of me find an answer, it seems like a life-or-death option that should be available, I know that I am lost without it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
    As a caveat to this, I have tried most every option under preferences, so unless you know of something hiding deep, I doubt that changing a preference is going to be the solution here. Thanks all!

    Thanks Larry,
    I have seen this posted as a solution, but to be clear it is not just a matter of rectangles not snapping, NOTHING will snap to the grid. Not a rectangle, not an existing object, not the pen tool, nothing. Even if I create a rectangle and go through the steps of expanding it to get rid of this new "live" feature, it still will not snap. So, I'm afraid that rectangles are not the culprit here, and I know from reading the forums that others are having the same issue with snap to grid simply not working at all.

  • [CS3 - Win] Smart Guides not showing up when Snap To Grid enabled

    Has anyone else encountered this bug?
    AI CS3 13.02
    Smart Guides are turned on, but hovering over items does not show the cyan hints, snapping to anchor points / paths etc does not work. This only occurs when Snap To Grid is enabled. If you then go and turn it off, the Smart Guides start working again as expected.
    Is this a known bug?
    Tom

    Thanks for the reply Mike. Smart Guides work perfectly for me provided Snap to Grid is turned off.
    I can see there being a conflict between snapping to grid and smart guides in CS3 - which takes precedence? From a UX perspective, if these two snapping modes are mutually exclusive, there should be at the very least an alert letting you know the other mode is disabled; the menu item should be greyed out. Or if it's truly an either-or situation, then the menu needs to be revised such that both snap to grid and smart guides are within the same submenu, and only one can be selected at a time, toggle with CMD+SHIFT+OPT+U.

  • Free Transform, please

    I'd like to add perspective to this and that now and then.
    And I'd like to be able to do it without using the 3D Rotate and Revolve effects or the New Perspective thing in CS5.
    I just want to grab the corners and move them.
    I can't believe we still can't do this.

    It is not like it is in Photoshop, as you requested.
    In Photoshop, you can move the corner(s) any number of times before "committing" the distortion. With Illustrator's Free Transform tool, as soon as you make the first move as Doug describes, the distortion bounding box resets to rectangular. This makes it a ridiculously tedious guessing game to do with it what can be easily and accurately done in three moves with the referenced Photoshop command. This has long been a feature request.
    But mucking around with that particular tool for this purpose would be too limited. The far better solution would be for Envelopes to not insist upon having the curve handles associated with straight segments already extended upon creation. Give the user the choice as to whether handles are pre-extended when applying an Envelope. That improvement would accomplish what you want, but would be advantageous for countless other situations, too. (See FreeHand).

  • Smart Guides Do Not Work

    My smart guides do not work. From the time I loaded CS5 they have not worked. If you go to View > Grids & Guides > the Smart Guides are grayed out.
    Then if you go to the Control Panel > View Options, the smart Guides are not grayed out they are checked.
    I have looked around and read trying to find out whats up with these guides but have not found anything the works. I have also uninstalled InDesign and reinstalled. This stall did not work.
    If anyone has any idea of why or how to get the guides to work that would be great.
      Thanks for your help...

  • Smart Guides not available

    Why is the Smart Guides option grayed out in my View menu. I am unable to turn them on/off and all options are selected in the Preferences ➡︎ Guides & Pasteboard ➡︎ Smart Guides menu.

    Thank you for the valuable info on fixing my Smart Guides issue. Evidently I wasn't fast enough to press four keys while restarting ID, so I used the method for exposing hidden files, entered the Library, and changed the names of two ID files thereby replacing the preferences. Worked like a charm!

  • Problem with smart guides in CS5 with converting type object to outlines.

    Hi There,
    I recently upgraded to Illustrator CS5, and am having some issues with the smart guides.  I create some type with the text tool, then convert that type object to outlines.  Now, when I want another graphical object to "snap" to any of the anchors of the outlined text graphic, the smart guides don't kick in!  The problem does not seem to occurr if I make a standard graphic with other tools, only when I create a graphic from a type object.  I need to be able to snap to graphical objects that are created via the convert type to outlines command.  Has anybody experienced this issue before?  It's kinda frustrating.
    The issue didn't seem to happen in CS3, and I've noticed the design of the smart guides is a bit different in the CS5 version as well.  Am I missing something?
    Any tips would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

    When you switched to CS5 did you turn on view >> snap to Point
    If your snapping tolernace is set to a small value, you may need to zoom in more to get snapping to work, or just increase the value. Also make sure you have the appropriate items checked (eg:Anchor Path Labels)
    Edit Preferences >> Smart Guides >> Snapping Tolerance

  • Smart Guides CS4

    I'm studying up on inDesign CS4 though Adobe TV.  Deke's tutorial on making a text frame shows the frame snaping to guidelines and margins.  The dimension arrows appear indicating the frame area is complete top to bottom, left to right.
    My settings have snap to guides and smart guides both turned on (check mark).  However, the only time I see the dimensions arrows is when I snap to the edge of the page.
    I'm snapping to guides and margins, but the arrows do not appear.  Am I missing a setting?

    I understand now.  Thanks!

  • Smart Guides Bug??

    I've been struggling with Tech support since May 22 over the problem with Smart guide not working in Illustrator CS6. Support has recorded my system twice during Connect meetings poked around in my preferences and accomplished nothing. I've added screen shots to Case on the support portal hoping there is a solution but Tech support always emails saying they tried to contact me but were unable. Basicly Smart guides are not showing the dimensions in Illustrator CS6 and leaving a screen artifact. I've deleted the preferences as tech support suggested, reinstalled Illustrator CS6 as tech support suggested and nothing seems to fix the problem. Smart guide work with Illustrator CS5 and Photoshop CS6. Both are on the same system as Illustrator CS6. My question, anyone else have this problem? Is it a bug? Tech support always tries the same old "let me review your case" and then proceeds to do nothing.

    I'm having the same problem on my MacBook Pro 10.7.5. There's another thread on this at http://forums.adobe.com/message/4924146 but no one over there has a solution either. I've also filed a bug report on it, figuring the more people report the bug, the more likely they are to fix it. Here's the bug report page for anyone wishing to do the same: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
    I sure wish they would fix this, because it's very annoying to not have these measurements when you're doing precision work. It's been seven months since you reported this and apparently no one has addressed the issue.

  • Smart guides and snap to point not working in Adobe Illustrator CC 2014

    Hello,
    I am having a lot of issues with Illustrator CC 2014 and the Smart Guides. Every time I try and snap one object to another or snap an object to a guide, the object snaps either above or below the guide/object but never snaps correctly. This also happens when I am zoomed in all the way!
