Illustrator CMYK test / help

Hello Folks,
Just wondering whether any one could do a test for me in regards to Illustrator CS3?
If I create a new document, in CMYK and the start to draw shapes, for example black on red, I get a weird jagged shape around the edge, sort of like a bitmap. It looks like this (zoomed in):
http://mybrokenshoe.com/misc/tesr.jpg
However if i then change the set the Document Colour Mode to RGB it disappears.
If it then switch back to CMYK it doesn't not return, until I start a new document...
Is it possible for any one to test whether this happens on their CS3?
Or Do i have some weird setting turned on?
Any help would be much appreciated...
thanks

But I don't think Nathan's intent is to export his images as raster images, I think he intends to finally use Illustrator to create final vector art for print. (Although it sounds like he has been rasterizing his Illustrator images and finishing them in photoshop in the past.)
Nathan, if you are going to take responsibility for a CMYK print file, you probably should read up a bit on print production. A variant of what you are seeing onscreen can happen in print. This is usually taken care of in the trapping by someone else further down the line from the Illustrator. But you should find out if you need to set your own overprints or not.
I have seen printers who should have taken responsibility for setting small black text and line work overprints not do so, so I always ask, or just set my own. Same for rich black.
I don't do any other trapping type work, though, unless I am specifically instructed to do so.

  • Converting Illustrator CC (Test version) files for Illustrator CS 6

    Hi there,
    perhaps someone can help me:
I have created files in illustrator CC (test version) which I can not open any more in Illustrator cs6 version.
How can I save these files in order to be compatible for the newest version cs6?
    Thanks.

    immerlachende,
I am afraid you may lose some of the features by going through EPS, depending on your artwork.
It may be worth trying the relevant among these (especially 1) - 4), hopefully not 6)):
You may try the following (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps (the following is a general list of things you may try when it is not in a specific file; 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences):
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer;
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

As far as acquiring news versions goes, the only benefit you will get from owning CS4 is that you can get a Creative Cloud subscription at a special rate for the first year.  https://creative.adobe.com/#plans
Otherwise, since CS4 is not in the upgrade path for CS6 products, you can purchase CS6 applications at full price.

  • Illustrator 12 (CS2) help does not appear in Adobe Help Center 2.0

Hi, I've just installed Illustrator CS2 today and I wanted to search for something in the help center but the only 2 products that appear in it are Photoshop CS2 and After FX CS2. I've restartred the computer to see if it would resolve the problem, but no..
So I need help in enabling Illustrator info in Help center.
Oh, and neither does Audition 3 appear in there.

I forgot one detail. This happened while I was having trouble seeing the mouse cursor (I use Apple's Magic Mouse). It had disappeared briefly. I had to drag the cursor out of the Firefox Window for it to reappear. I accidentally entered full screen view while the cursor was not visible.

  • Frustrated: Novice Illustrator User Needs HELP

Frustrated: Novice Illustrator User Needs HELP
    Hello All
I am a novice user of Illustrator [after you read my question it will probably be obvious] running Illustrator 14.0.0 (CS4) - on a MAC iMac running 10.4.11.  I am a small business owner and have to wear many hats and so I am forced to be my graphic designer by default - ha ha
PROBLEM - If I make a box using the RECTANGLE TOOL... The box should have a point at each Corner and the Middle of the box, as well as, in the Middle of each Side, and middle of Top and Bottom for a total of 9 anchor points...  but it only has 5... missing the 4 anchor points in the Middle of each Side, and middle of Top and Bottom. It is the same on Text Boxes too..  I can NOT find a setting to change this.... More, when running Illustrator on my MAC Laptop, It has all 9 anchors on the box...   I looked at Preferences etc... and matched everything to be the same but the problem is not fixed?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks-

Aw, c'mon James. Chill it a bit.
Yeah. You continually throw around your little personal jibes, and then if someone calls your bluff, you think you can back out of it with the old "can't you take a joke?" comeback.
In my previous work environment where everyone used Illie, Freehand was a word to be used cautiously – a bit like Macbeth in the theatre.
Well, I didn't work in your previous environment. And FreeHand specifically had nothing to do with this thread until you brought it up. Seems to me it's you who has a FreeHand chip on his shoulder.
I thought you knew my way of expressing myself better...
What, you think I keep a personality registry of regulars here or something? I'll tell you what I don't do: I don't engage in personal insults here. Yet your personal jibes are frequent enough for me to have grown weary of them.
I think I was not dismissing bounding boxes as useless...
Excuse me? "There's absolutely no need to use bounding boxes"?
You are probably right that bounding boxes came with Illie 9.
Probably before that. But I can personally recall that the current-selection bounding box was present in AI9. Unlike some, I try to avoid making claims that I can't immediately substantiate.
I hopped straight from 6 to 9 and that was the first time I had seen them outside of Freewotever.
I'm not familiar with "Freewotever." But if you're again trying to be funny, you are also again revealing your near complete unfamiliarity with it. FreeHand is not the program that continually cluttered the interface with bounding boxes. In fact, for many years that is exactly one of the distractions FreeHand users complained about re Illustrator.
First off, FreeHand's interface doesn't display bounding boxes. It displays only bounding box handles (four dots) on non-basic constructs like clipping paths. (Somewehere around FH 9, it implemented the optional Transform Handles, but that's another thing.) In the cases of rectangles and ellipses, FreeHand doesn't display Bounding Boxes per se. Working in FreeHand has always provided more functionality with much less visual clutter (and tool glut) than Illustrator's defaults.
The difference is that FreeHand has always provided proper live geometric shape primitives--something which Illustrator still doesn't provide, even though it's one of the most basic of all vector drawing interface expectations, being present in just about any vector drawing program on the planet--except Illustrator. That point of confusion is common among those who are experienced only with Illustrator's chronically outdated and archaic interface.
Quite to the contrary, a rectangle drawn in a program that does provide basic live primitives doesn't need a bounding box to perform the bare-bones basic manipulation exemplified, because you can change the aspect ratio of it (and corner radius) anytime you want, regardless of its rotation. You can do this not only in FreeHand, but Canvas, Inkscape, Xara Designer, and even in just about any basic drawing module of just about any "works" or "office" bundle. It's just Illustrator that still fails to provide live shape primitives, and therefore needs a rotated bounding box to provide a very limited subset of such common functionality. You draw a rectangle (or any other geometric primitive) in Illustrator, and all you get is a dumb path. So Illustrator actually needs bounding boxes more than other programs, because of its anemic core funciton set and its hideous user interface.
But of course, someone who is familiar only with Illustrator wouldn't know that. Which is fine...so long as they don't spew derision at programs they know next to nothing about (and users of such programs).
...bearing in mind that I have been at this job since the days of Rotring pens with nosebleeds.
So? I was using Rapidographs and constructing compound rotation in isometric on the board for about a decade before I came to prefer Staedtler pens because I found them less prone to clog. What does that have to do with anything?
Obviously newcomers should be encouraged to use new features, but preferably not before they have grasped the basics thoroughly. How basic bounding boxes are is perhaps a moot point.
Nonsense. Other self-proclaimed "experts" in Illustrator would no doubt argue that bounding boxes were added for the benefit of "beginners." Again, this is not a "new feature." And yes, it is bare-bones basic; just implemented in a half-baked manner in Illustrator.
As for step 3 you are right, but if you turn off the preview you can use the pixels on the paths for alignment,
Egads. That's really grasping at straws, Steve.
    ...Or use bounding boxes.
    Or use bounding boxes.

  • Why doesn't my iPhoto screen match illustrations in the Help section?

In designing a book, the illustrations in IPhoto Help do not match my screen. Several icons on my screen are missing including arrows in lower right corner with back and forward features, the view button to indicate single or double sided pages, and the two icons just to left of the cover page in the picture bar which make editing easier. What happened, and can it be fixed?

    Steve:
What I think you're seeing is the Help file for iPhoto 5. This is what the iPhoto 5 book window looks like and it has the two navigation arrows you're referring to. Somehow you've got the latest help file for iPhoto.

Each practice test is of most value the first time you see it, after that retaking it is of less value as one may remember the answer.
And go over your correct and and incorrect answers to improve your understanding.
Take your last test just before your last opportunity to reschedule your exam and with enough time to go over it!
I have ordered a Practice test on OCA from Self test Software does this help in preapring for the certification.Good , that is an official supplier (though there are some who try to immitate the name).
Also do i have to go through Oracle Books and Oracle documentation also...... Yes Yes Yes! This is more important that practice tests. And you need to practice what you are leaning on databases.
Longer term this is how you get and retain your skills.
I am worried by your question (hopefully incorrectly) that your are trying to get by on practice tests only ... this is not the way to go.

  • Colour is not right in illustrator cmyk pantone cyan and aqua

I am trying to work with colours in illustrator.  I have set my colour mode to CMYK.  I am trying to create a light aqua colour and just keep getting "out of gamut" errors.  I tried using the colour book for Pantone and even entering the number of a pantone colour I want and just does not look right on the screen
The file will be used to print so RGB is not an option
can some one help me set up colour settings so I can get the best match for a light aqua colour.

For the sake of understanding: Spot colors are supposed to be printed as one dedicated ink in the physical world. Unless you convert it to a process color in a controlled (=calibrated environment) the on-screen simulation is merely a placeholder whose representation may not be at all exact. Likewise, converting it to CMYK may not give the same color result due to how the separate components interact differently from a single color ink. That and then there may be specific halftoning and ink density requirements as well as the paper stock that change "mix" colors or at least their perception. The default generic profiles should do just fine, but feel free to instate a specific FOGRA 27/ 39/ custom/ whatever setting if you know who's gonna print it using what profiles. Regardless, you have to at least calibrate the monitor either by eyeballing it with a calibrated reference chart or a calibration device and then of course you have to use it for proof preview. Beyond that - light colors are sometimes created by reducing the ink density/ opacity and/or flattening them against white and letting the halftoning take care of the rest, but this really depends on specific workflows. At least on my crudely calibrated system here at home I have no issues to get a reasonable representation of the color, so something may be up on your system.

  • New to illustrator, looking for help

    Hello,
I'm new to illustrator (3) and would like to make kayak station molds and outlines using a table of numbers (offsets).  Can anyone help me on how to do this ?
I found this image on the net, i'm also using a laptop.
    A table of offsets

That can easily be done in Illustrator. There is nothing about it that would require CAD software. Just use ordinary drafting techniques.
The sections could be drawn full scale, so no need to manually workaround Illustrator's (infuriating) lack of user-defined rulers. Simply set your grid to correspond to the ruler units you want to use (the ft or centimenter offsets). Zero your rulers to the Artboard origin. Measure your offsets from the left and bottom edges of the Artboard. The exact steps could be any of many different procedures. For example:
Rectangle Tool: Click (don't drag). Enter overall height and width of a section.
Transform palette: Select its left bottom corner as the reference in the 9-point proxy icon. Enter x and y values for vertical and horizontal offsets. That rectangle is now the "bounding box" of your section shape.
Similar simple operations can be used involving the Line tool, to numerically position direct-selected anchorpoints, whatever. You only have a few values in the tables, so this would not take long to do manually. If it were more involved, a script could be written to draw the whole thing programmatically, but I hardly see the need for that in this. I dare say many home builders of kayaks and sailboats use nothing more elaborate than a program like Illustator to make their working drawings and patterns.
The profiles could be drawn to a convenient scale (half, quarter, etc.) and even projected to flats using ordinary drafting techniques in Illustator.
To help you further would require my speaking with you in more detail about what you actually have, where you are in the process, what exactly you need to draw, etc.--Not practical in an online forum. You just need a general understanding of working in Illustrator. Then, if you have a basic understanding of 2D drafting, you'd know how to do this in Illustrator.
I see nothing particularly challenging about it, and would not hesitate to draw it in Illustrator. (Except that, since I have them available, I'd use any other drawing program that provides the basic conveniences of user-defined rulers, callouts, and dimension tools. That would include Draw, Canvas, Corel Designer and others.) But again: This is a simple project, and could even be done in Illustrator, and just as accurately (for all practical purposes) as in a CAD program.

  • How to creating a large sign with person's photo in illustrator? Please Help!

Firstly, I'm very new to illustrator. I always use photoshop for everything but the company my person is using is only asking for it in vector. I'm creating a 4x8 ft sign. It contains text, a logo, and a picture of the person that it's for (like a billboard). Speaking with the printing company that the person is using they wanted it in vector/ .eps format. His photo into a vector but I'm afraid when printed he'll look like a cartoon.  I've been searching all day and can only find videos of people tracing the photo into a vector. I tried copy and pasting his picture from photoshop however it won't paste it or won't save it. I'm totally lost, I really need help and I really would appreciate the insight. Is there a way that I can use his photo or do I have to make it a vector? Will it come out realistic as a vector?
    Thanks in advance,
    -Newbie

There is no way that I know of to turn a photo into vector without it looking at least a bit like a cartoon.
More importantly; how is this being used? if it is being cut (vinyl or dimensional) then using a photo makes no sense. If it is being printed, then the person you are creating this for needs to find another printing company -- one who knows what they are doing. Seriously.
In either case; you will probably get more and better help in the Illustrator forum HERE.
    Good luck.

I have work saved on my mac that for some reason can no longer be saved as a illustrator file, to be honest there is quite a bit. I can save it a EPS or PDF but not Ai. Does anyone one have a solution for my problem? Or can i just save all work as EPS what effect will this have in the long run?? Cheers guys.

    Hi Jacob

I have also tried holding the command buttons mentioned when illustrator starts up but still no joy i cannot save ai files in my first user account. I have also tried go to folder, still no joy. The folder with illustrator settings cannot be found...
Should i just save all work to disk and then delete the first user and start again in the user where ai files can be saved? Or should i remove illustrator, reinstall and look for the folder again?
Could you please in simplest form tell me how to find the folder in question, so that i am not missing something in my stress...

    What I've done :
    Reinstall Illustrator CC
Remove Preferences in the /Users/ folder
Remove all files with the Adobe Cleaner Tool
    Reset PRAM

Cmd+Q doesn't work, shortcuts don't work either. Cannot use it.
I'm a graphic designer, so it's pretty important I can use this, this is going nowhere.
Any idea of what I could do?
    Thanks

    Hello,
It's not really a shortcut issue, but really the way everything's rendered in the canvas. Yeah, ok, cmd+Q doesn't work though (as for other shortcuts too). I can select, but everything stays selected, I can drag & drop elements, but they stay selected unless I select something else. I've searched many discussion forums, and nothing seam to help.
