Illustrator Conversion & Images

I'm trying to transition from InDeisgn to Illustrator.  Nothing against ID but id like to pick up on my AI skills a bit.
Most of my work requires a lot of imagery from web links.  For example i'll get a link with 8 different images from a house.  I can then copy each image directly from the web and paste directly into 8 individual frames/rectangles in InDesign.  A simple fit and center fills the frame perfectly.  I know cut and paste isn't ideal but for the low quality of printing required, its very expedient.
I can't seem to find anything as simple and expedient in Illustrator.  Is there a way to paste directly int a preset rectangle or frame.  It seems every time I try, i paste a full size image as a new frame and then have  to scale.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

kpow,
You can just place and resize the images as desired.
If you want to give them frames, you can use the Rectangle Tool and just drag between opposite corners; Smart Guides are your friends, (saying anchor when you are there). This will give you a separate vector path. You can select both image and path and Group them.

  • Exported Raw Conversion Image Resolution and Assigning a Color Profile, etc

In Aperture 1.1, although I set the exported Raw conversion image resolution to 300 dpi in the preferences, it continues to come out at 72 dpi which is something of an inconvenience. Also, is it possible to assign a color profile to the "exported version" so that it is congruent to my PS CS2 color workspace (if that is what its called). Is this program capable of carrying out a conversion as a background operation? Finally, can the layout windows be configured so that they remember how they have been used in the past? Thanks.

    Iatrogenic huh! Cool!
Anyway, I'm not real clear on what it is you are trying to accomplish. Despite your obvious vocabulary skills, there seems to be some disconnect relative to what you are trying to accomplish. You are right that "exporting a version" in Aperture is roughly equivalent to what happens in ACR when you "Open" a RAW image into Photoshop. In both cases you have, hopefully, already done the adjusting of parameters you want prior to "exporting", or "opening". When you "open" or "export" you wind up with an "image" composed of pixels, whereas in the RAW adjustment phase you are just working with a temporary thumbnail and a set of mathematical instructions. Big difference, I suppose is that when you "open" and image from ACR into CS2, the resulting image is truly just pixels and has not had a "file type" applied to the file yet, until you "save" it, while in Aperture, if you "export" a file to CS2, or to the desktop, you end up with the file type already applied. Presuming you "export" a 16 bit TIFF or PSD, there is no operational difference.
I could be wrong, but with the new Bayer Demosaicing algorithms in Aperture 1.1, and the Camera RAW adjustments, you should be able to come up with an adjusted image that is VERY close if not identical to one done in ACR, with the possible exception of lens abberation adjustment. I was very critical of the RAW adjustments in 1.0.1, but I am very happy with the capabilites in 1.1. That said, I think there is still some room for improvement in user friendliness of some of the adjustments such as Levels.

  • "can't open the illustration. the image has already been specified, it cannot be changed" in CS6

I received this error mesaage when trying to open a Illustrator CS6 file. "can't open the illustration. the image has already been specified, it cannot be changed"
This file contains my sketches. Hoe can I recover file?

Are you sketches embedded images, or vector? Do you have any additional plug ins installed, or any new recent fonts?
Have you tried your illustrator prefs. Run disk utility to fix any permissions. Set up a new user account, and try to open the file, if this works then we know there is a pref in your user account causing this, otherwise it is somethng in the global installation..
This problem happened back in 2012 to this person though no answer.

  • Illustrator screen image breakup

Illustrator screen image breaks up with 2 or more complex files open at the same time.

I thought CC would solve this but . . .

    Hi MCW1313,
Could you provide more information about problem.
What do you mean by Illustrator screen image breaks up? Is illustrator getting freeze or crashing.
It would be good if you post a screenshot.

  • Illustrator CS4: Images Open 3x Smaller than Original

Every time I open an image in Illustrator, it is 3-times smaller than the original image started out.
    For example:
An image starting out with the dimensions:
    Width: 5.35 inches / 1070 px / 385.2 pt
    Height: 5.24 inches / 1048 px / 377.3 pt
Once it is opened up in Illustrator the dimensions are contorted to:
    Width: 1.93 inches / 386 px / 139 pt
    Height: 1.89 inches / 378 px / 136.1 pt
And this is just from opening the image. I have not done anything as of yet. All I have to look at is a distorted pixelated mess.
I am a bit new to Illustrator, and after hearing my friends talk about how great it is to use, none of them can figure out why Illustrator is doing this to my image files.
Why is Illustrator doing this, and how do I get it to open image files with the proper dimensions?

Dimensions of an image depends on its resolution. When viewing the image in an image editor it just displays 1 image pixel on 1 monitor pixel. Illustrator doesn't do this, but takes into account, what you have defined as resolution. That is: how many pixels should be on 1 inch.

  • Illustrator conversion to DXF (CAD)

    Howdy,
At my work, we are producing DXF(CAD) files from Illustrator and having a couple of issues.
    1) Vector objects are joined in Illustrator, but becoming unjoined/unconnected in the converted DXF.
For sure these vector objects are "joined" in the Illustrator file and even "compound" Illustrator objects become unjoined
We need connected CAD objects to run CNC machines. Right now, people have to go into the DXF and manually rejoin the CAD data.
Does anyone have any new ideas on how to fix this? I know we can try some DXF converters.  (Cadmover, Curvefit, CimLite)
Is there something better than anchor points in Illustrator for force joined geometry?
Is this just an Illustrator converting issue with no real good fix. If so, how do I put a request into Adobe to fix this.
    2) Converting Illustrator curves/splines into arcs, is this possible.
Again the answer is to probably use a DXF converter, but is there any other ideas on how to get good clean arcs out of illustrator from splines/curves with Bezier handles.
I know there is a program called Bezarc but it is unsupported now.
Can Illustrator convert splines into arcs before the conversion? Or, can Illustrator convert all the polylines(lines with massive points) to arcs.
    Thanks everyone,
    Peter

Hello Mylenium. I managed to get it sorted by adding points to the curve. Attached are 3 screen shots. 1 - showing the nice clean Illustrator curve. 2 - showing the angular result and 3 - showing the result when I added lots of point to the curve.
You would think Illustrator would automatically generate the correct curve when outputting to dxf! I found a plugin that I might try called EXDXF-Pro3-mac-en-3011

I'm having trouble importing images in Illustrator CS6. Dragging from finder doesn't work, nor does the "place" option.

  • Problem exporting Illustrator gradient images into Indesign.

I created and overlapped 3 gradient images in Illustrator cs6 and saved @ an eps file.  When imported into Indesign thin white lines appear where the images overlap.  How to fix?

    Thanx Kris -
I saved file @ a pdf and it exported perfectly.
    Will also try your suggestion.

  • Trying to get rid of banding in an Illustrator CS6 image

I'm working on a small project in Illustrator CS6, and a gradient within the project is quite visibly displaying banding. I would use Photoshop's dither to fix this, if not for the fact that I'm going to export this as an SVG, rather than a raster image. What can I do to get rid of this banding?

  • Photoshop to Illustrator - Path/Image export

I'm trying to save/export a photo cut-out (with paths) from PS CS4 to Illustrator CS4 and am having trouble.
The photo I'm attempting to export is a bust and, when I pull the .eps into Illustrator, I've got a bit of white that shows around the gentlemans hair. This wouldn't be an issue if the background were white ... but the photo needs to overlap a red slice in a pie chart.
In PS: I've got all my paths drawn. I've set the device pixels on the clipping path to '0'. My 'Make Selection' has a rendering feather radius of '0', anti-aliased.
Should I be saving to a format other than .eps? Should I be exporting (I know it would need to be more than the 'export paths to illustrator option - I need the image AND the path)?
Any ideas on what I could change to make this work? I've been at this all darn day and I'm starting to lose my mind.
    Thanks.

In PS: I've got all my paths drawn. I've set the device pixels on the clipping path to '0'. My 'Make Selection' has a rendering feather radius of '0', anti-aliased.
What do selections have to do with Clipping Paths?
Creating an eps with a Clipping Path but previously deleting/filling with white the surrounding areas means unnecessarily damaging the image and can cause problems with the edge pixels.
You could always manually create a »bleed« if need be.
I don’t exactly consider eps as outdated (if the edges are sharp) as importing psds with transparencies in many cases will introduce the need for flattening in pdf-creation and I consider it beneficial if that can be avoided.

  • CS4 Illustrator - converting image to JPEG keeping exact image & transparency

I'm fairly new to Illustrator and am learning as I go along. I've been working on a logo with Illustrator and have been working on converting the file to a JPEG. On Illustrator, my logo has text and an object with a transparent background. I then "exported" the file to JPEG. But in the JPEG file my image appears on a white background. So it looks like my logo is embedded in a white 'box'. How do I keep the background transparent in the JPEG image? Help! Thanks.

You don't and you can't jpeg does not support transparency.
PNG and gif do however if used for the web. If using for print you can keep it as an ai file to be used in ID or Quark 8

  • Illustrator cc image looks pixelated after saving with transparent background

as the title states; image looks pixelated after saving with transparent background...
i created a logo in adobe illustrator cc and i wanted to saved it for web in order to be able to copy and paste the logo where ever I wanted but the image looks extremely pixelated after saving as an png, and for web. Is there a solution for this?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thank you!!
    Jon

What DPI did you save as:
You should always save as 300dpi, then you can always reduce  the size as needed.
Another thing, don't copy and paste, that always causes that Problem.
In Acrobat you should open Tools Menu click on Content Editing  the Add Image.
Then click on image and choose Properties and place where you want and size as you desire.

Are you holding Command and then tapping the + key?
If you hold the + and tap Command, nothing will happen.
Have you checked to ensure the shortcuts are set correctly?
Choose Edit > Keyboard shortcuts and be certain the "Set" reads "Illustrator Defaults".
