Illustrator crashes while loading (Illustrator has unexpectedly quit message)mac

Mac OSX 10.4.1 Tiger/Power Book G4 12"/Adobe Illustrator CS3 13.0.0
If anyone has had this problem, I have found a fix that worked. Illustrator has unexpectedly quit, crash during initialization of the program during loading.
In my case it was a font that I downloaded called ZEBRA that caused Illustrator to crash during this loading period. I had no Idea that corrupt fonts could effect the application in this way. I went through all of the steps that I could think of to fix this problem including, re-setting the preferences folder within CS3, running disk utility to reset user permissions, re-installing Illustrator and safe mode startup. I even created another user account to test and see if it was a user settings corruption. What I found was that Illustrator would open and function properly when using the newly created user account from startup. After this I ran the mac in safe mode from start up of my original user account. In doing this I was able to start Illustrator again without the crash occurring.
At this point I went to my font book application and tried to find a corrupt font. At first I hi-lighted all of the fonts and went to File-Validate fonts. This process gave me some fonts with errors which I then deleted from my font book. Again, I tried to open Illustrator and still the same error (Unexpectedly Quit). I then went to font book, hi-lighted all fonts and disabled all fonts. After this I tried to open Illustrator. Amazingly Illustrator loaded with no problem. Ok now I know the problem lies in a corrupt font. Evidently you can have a corrupt font and it not show up while validating fonts. In the end I had to go through all the user fonts and de-activated them, then try to open Illustrator to see which font was corrupt and delete it. It was a little easier to select a group to deactivate and then narrow it down to just one font.
In my case the corrupt font was ZEBRA that I had to delete. I downloaded this font online for free. So if you have this problem after downloading a font online, this is more than likely the problem. After this everything was back to normal
Sorry for such a long explanation. I hope this saves someone the time and headache I had to go through to fix mine.
Thanks Mike.

Well I don't have that Zebra font, and I've just installed this for the first time. I have been troubleshooting this for many hours between yesterday and today, and I've tried every suggestion I've found in this forum and a couple of things not mentioned. I have no preferences to delete since it's never successfully opened, and I put in a help ticket with Adobe yesterday, but I'm frustrated because nothing like this has ever happened to me before in 24 years of doing computer graphics. So if anyone has any further suggestions not covered thus far, I'm open to them!
This is what I've tried so far:
Installation went fine. I registered and activated the software. First attempt (and every attempt) the software crashes at start up. I tried installing the updates, verifying my fonts, deactivating downloaded fonts, restarting the computer, and tried to open it in my alternate user account. I tried using the disc to uninstall and reinstall (3 times after the first). I tried opening the software in safe mode. I tried installing it in the alternate user account.
I am running Mac OS 10.4.11 Tiger on a G5 PPC with 92 GB free HD memory, 2.5 GB RAM, 2.1 GHZ processor. PS CS3 runs fine and is unaffected by any of this.

  • Consistent "This Application has Unexpectedly Quit Messages"

I have a 15" Powerbook G4 800MHz with 1gb of RAM (I upgraded from 512 to 1gb a couple of years ago). Recently it has been quitting out of applications consistently. It started when I opened iTunes and was in the store trying to buy an album, everytime I got to the buy now screen it quits with the "Unexpectedly Quit" message. I thought it might be the actual iTunes program so I trashed the existing one and went to apple.com to download the new one. Again, when I got to the DOWNLOAD NOW button, it "Unexpectedly Quit" yet again. On all of these I have shutdown and restarted multiple times, shut down for the night and restarted the next evening, Repaired Disk Permissions, etc. What could be causing it to repeatedly quit? It basically renders the machine useless. I am quite a novice on the "fix it" side so assuming I don't know something is probably safe. I have been out here on this discussion forum looking for the topic that really covered my issue and I haven't found one. So I am posting this.
    thanks in advance!!

An update on my previous post. I tried to reinstall itunes from the cd that came with it. It installed successfully and then when I went to find it in APPS and add it to my dock the system crashed
    Here is the full message:

  • ITunes 5 - The application has unexpectedly quit.

I kept getting "The application has unexpectedly quit" message when trying to launch iTunes 5. If I logged out and logged back in again, then I could open it, but I'm not gonna do that everytime I want to launch iTunes.
Anyway, I had 2 Scripts in the Library/iTunes/Scripts folder under my user folder, (i.e. Dan/Library/iTunes/Scripts). When I removed the scripts from the folder, iTunes launched without crashing.
Then, to try to determine if that was the cause of the problem, I quit iTunes, put the scripts back in the folder, tried to launch iTunes again, and got the application has unexpectedly quit" message again.
So, I've taken the scripts out of the folder, and it's working again. Then, I noticed that there used to be a little Script icon in the menu bar, but now it's not there. Maybe Apple doesn't want the scripting option there.

I think the problem may be memory. 64mbs of ram with osx is apparently not enough. But any other ideas would still be appreciated. I'll get back once I get more ram in.

  • I have this message appearing "the application finder has unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows"... someone PLEASE help

I have this message appearing "the application finder has unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows"...
So far it doesn't appear to be effecting anything that i can see on my imac BUT it is incredibly annoying and popping up at bad times, and it all happened when my imac automatically updated itself. So annoying. PLEASE help!!!

Finder crashes are often caused by "Google Drive." If it's installed, I suggest you first check for an update. If that doesn't solve the problem, remove it according to the developer's instructions. You may need to start the computer in safe mode to do so. Back up all data before making any changes.
If you use Google Drive and don't want to remove it, then try deselecting the option in its preferences to "show status icons." According to reports, that may be enough to stop the crashing.
Similar cloud-data clients such as "Dolly Drive," "iDrive," "Open Drive," "Transporter Desktop," and others can cause the same problem.

  • The application mail has unexpectedly quit.

While on the web if I go to a contact us link or any other mail application
    I get this error message...
The Application Mail Has Unexpectedly Quit.
The system has not been affected.
Would you like to submit a bug report to Apple?
(I have submitted several bug reports)
I have to leave the site and go to my e-mail and type in the address and mail them from there.
    Help
    mreyeman / Scott

I’m hesitant to try to help you here because your last post gives the impression that you want Roger to do that instead of me, but since Roger hasn’t replied to your last post, and for the benefit of other users who might also have the same problem, I’ll reply anyway...
It seems that, when you talk about “my e-mail”, you’re actually talking about webmail and don’t use the Mail application included with Mac OS X nor any other standard mail client to access your mail at all.
Let’s fix the problem of Mail crashing first. Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Whoever gave you the computer probably left his/her mail data there. If there is something wrong with those files, that could be the reason Mail crashes every time. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/ and move the entire Mail folder out of there, to the Desktop. Now, go to ~/Library/Preferences/ and move com.apple.mail.plist to the Desktop as well. Alternatively, if you don’t want to preserve the data stored there, you may just trash those files (the Mail folder, not the application itself, and com.apple.mail.plist).
Now, there is the problem of Mail opening when you click on a ‘mailto’ URL. Until just a few months ago, there was no solution to this problem because webmail isn’t a standard mail client. But it’s now possible to solve it using the following piece of software:
    http://www.belkadan.com/webmailer/
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

  • The application Entourage has unexpectedly quit - every time I quit?

Ever since I upgraded to 10.3.9 I get the message "The application Entourage has unexpectedly quit" every time I close it out.
It hassn't seemed to have hurt anything, but I always wonder if it is not the first sign of an impending total system crash on my aging unit.
    POWERBOOK G4 Titanium (2002) Mac OS X (10.3.9) Entourage, v.10.0.0 (1309)
    POWEBOOK G4 Titanium   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

It is probably a coincidence that the problem coincided with your upgrade but do go to Microsoft's website and make sure your Office installation has the most recent update for your version.
The problem is probably being caused by your E'rage database being damaged. Quit E'rage and then restart while holding the option key. This will force E'rage to rebuild/repair the database which should take care of the problem.

  • "The application Safari has unexpectedly quit." / "Archive and Install"

...The system and other applications have not been affected.
Would you like to submit a bug report to Apple?
I was working on my eMac last night when all of a sudden Safari shut down. I tried to open it again and I kept getting the above error message.
At first, I thought this was no big deal, as I just downloaded Mozilla Firefox. However, it seems that whatever error caused this corruption in Safari has also affected my MSN Messenger, and a few other internet related Apps.
I don't know if any of you have come across this problem before, but it would be greatly appreciated if you could email me your suggestions to fixing this problem.
I called Apple support, and the lady suggest looking for a way to "archive and install preserving" so that I don't lose any of my important files. I'm sure that this might fix my problem as well.
Please let me know if you have a solution for me!!
    Eric.

    Eric Jackson Wood,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Doing an Archive and Install because Safari unexpectedly quit is roughly akin to using several sticks of dynamite to take out a housefly in the kitchen. How much RAM does your Mac have, and how long had Safari been running continuously before the quit? Safari does have a known memory leak problem (the Safari 3 beta may have fixed that; too soon to tell for sure); if you have a minimal amount of RAM (256 MB or less), run multiple applications simultaneously, and leave Safari running for several hours, you can expect Safari to bog down. If you then try to load some types of web page constructs, the unexpectedly quit message isn't quite so unexpected. (Quitting and relaunching Safari every few hours is a viable workaround; in sever cases you may need to restart the computer as well.)
How were other Internet apps affected? Slowdowns, unable to connect, unable to find sites, or what? What version of MSN Messenger are you using? (MSN Messenger isn't known for being overly robust in the first place.) If a number of online utilities all begin to act strange at the same time, my first suspect would be the local network and the ISP. Is the problem still persistent after restarting the computer and after several hours (to allow the ISP to fix any glitches on their end)?
If Safari continues to misbehave, launch Safari and before going to any website, try going to the Safari menu and select the commands to reset Safari and clear cache, then restart Safari and see it that helps. If you have Safari set to open going to a homepage rather than opening a blank page, first move /Users/ [your_username]/ Library/ Preferences/ com.apple.Safari.plist to the Desktop before launching Safari to reset it and clear its caches. If Safari then works, you can quit it and try moving you previous preferences back; if Safari begins acting up again, trash the old preferences and re-enter your desired settings in a newly-created preferences file.

  • LV crashes while loading my llb, but the built app. functions correctly???

Im hoping someone may understand the cause of the LabVIEW crash Im experiencing.
LabVIEW 6.1 crashes and Windows 2000 says, "LabVIEW.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows" when I try to load an llb by clicking on the top-level vi from within LabVIEW or when opening the llb from outside LabVIEW. It crashes while loading particular sub-vis of the llb. If I try to load the offending subvis directly, I also get the same crash. If I build the llb into an application, the build goes smoothly and the resulting application functions correctly. If I use a splash screen approach and do not load the offending sub-vis (by not opening vi references to them), they load-up fi
ne when the top-level vi loads and then I am able to edit and re-save any vi of the llb including the offending sub-vis. Ive tried re-saving the llb as a separate development distribution and still get the same crash behavior. Ive also tried saving the offending sub-vis to separate files outside the mother llb (after getting them open with the splash screen approach) and I get the same crash when I open these files. If I save one of the offending sub-vis as a separate llb, I cant get it open even with the splash screen approach. Ive loaded the latest video driver for my Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop and I get the same behavior on a Dell Dimension 8200 desktop that is also running Windows 2000 (Version 5 SP4). There are 110 objects in my llb that includes *.vis, *.rtms, and *.ctls.. Any ideas as to why/how this is occurring and how I can fix it? Is this a known 6.1 bug that is fixed in 7? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Ive included my splash screen like loader, f
    or what its worth. Thanks.

Thanks for responding. Your understanding is correct. Mass compiling was one of the first things I tried (although I failed to mention it). I also un-installed and re-installed LabVIEW. It crashes during mass compiling of the full llb, although the vi that it appears to be working on when it crashes is not an offender, i.e. I can open that vi fine. The crash during mass compiling is the same crash, i.e. Windows says it had to close LabVIEW because it generated errors.
Ive attached one of the offenders. It is missing many of its sub-vis so youll have to hit ignore vi a bunch when opening it. (The llb of it is ~2.6 MB. I thought that might be too big/rude to post.) This vi crashes LabVIEW upon mass compile or upon opening it (after hit
    ting ignore subvi a bunch).
I was going to attach an llb of another smaller offender, but in the process of editing it to be a little prettier and better documented, the problem kind of vanished for that vi. The main routine still crashes when I mass compile the full llb, but now I can open some of the old offenders without incident. I still cant open the main routine directly as it crashes LabVIEW. Thanks for your time.

  • The application has unexpectedly quit???

    Hello,
I have been using iMovie, and iDVD for a few years now. Nothing fancy, just home videos, but I really enjoy it, and I feel very good when a project is done and I can share it with my family.
My most recent project is a group of iMovies based on the first 4 years of my middle daughter's life. I title each movie by year (1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993). Each movie has titles, transitions, soundtrack music, and "chapters" added, all standard iMovie stuff.
My problem is that this project will not work. The project starts out fine, just like always, with the little sideways barber pole spinning away, but when I come back several hours later to check on it, there is a window stating that the "application has unexpectedly quit" and asking me if I want to submit a report to apple. This has not happened before.
The first time it happened, I did all the things I have learned to do when iMovie tries to act up or give me trouble, specifically: I deleted the iDVDplist, I "repaired permissions", and I even ran "Cacheout X" and restarted my computer. But after all that, when I tried the project again, it "unexpectedly quit" again.
I don't know what to do now? I have read that many people have had trouble with iDVD chapters being placed at transitions. I thought this must be a problem with the new iDVD5, because I have always placed chapters at transitions (and at the very beginning of a project) and I have never had a problem before.
Since I don't know what else to do, I am going to go back and move the chapters around avoiding the beginning, and any transitions, and see if that makes a difference. Other than that, can anyone suggest anything else I could try?
Would upgrading to iLIFE '05 help? I actually own it. I have had the box sitting on my desk for months, but I have been reluctant to load it because of many of the problems that I have read about in these forums. In my case, iDVD4 has been working very reliably for me, and my thought was "if it ain't broke, why fix it?" Well, now it seems to be broken, so, should I try to fix it?
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated,
    Lincoln

    Thank you David,
I appreciate your advise. As you suggested, I went back and moved all the chapters from each of the iMovies. I have never NOT placed a chapter at the very beginning of a project, and it seems strange for the "2nd" chapter to be listed as chapter #1 (since the first chapter "Beginning" is implied), but--- it worked!
It is hard to say exactly what worked, because I also created an entirely new project. It was an exact duplicate of the original project in every way (except for the new chapter locations), but I simply couldn't figure out how to "update" the original project after I made the changes, and I thought that making a new project would be the easiest thing.
So it is probably the chapter changes that fixed it, but perhaps there was some wierd problem with the first project. The other thing I was wondering about was that this project was less than 2 hours long, but not by much. When I looked at the "Status" section, I had used 3.8 of the available 4.0GB for video.
But the bottom-line is that I am very happy that the project is complete, and I continue to be amazed at the high quality movies and DVD's I am able to create with the iLIFE programs.
Now that this crisis is over, what is your opinion of iLIFE '05? Should I take the plunge and load it up, or keep working with programs that I am happy with? I must admit that I would love to have access to the new "THEMES" in iDVD, but as you can plainly see, I am simply not computer saavy enough to handle any of the new problems that I have read so much about in the iMovieHD, and iDVD5 discussion groups.
    Thanks again,
    Lincoln

  • "This application adobe photoshop cs has unexpectedly quit" HELP!

Every time I try to open Photoshop CS it crashes and tells me that "This application adobe Photoshop CS has unexpectedly quit". I have used this application many times in the past but a few months ago it just stopped opening. I have tried deleting the application and preferences and re installing it several times but this has not made a difference.
Is there anything else I can try to get the application to open or am I better off buying an upgrade and which one? (I am running a Mac OS X 10.3.9 system on an eMac)

Well you can only buy one upgrade and that is CS3. the problem is it will not run on your system you need at least 10.4.8. the other problem is Apple stopped selling 10.4.x when they started shipping 10.5 and I don't believe it will work on your eMac.
Will Photoshop work in a new user?
    have you run DiskWarrior?
