Illustrator CS 5.1 text sub layer problems

Some issues happening with text sub layers, any insight into correcting would be great.
1) The show/hide eye icon for the sub layers has no effect - text always shows.
Show/hide works for the full layer and for object sub layers, but not for any sub layer with text.
2) Text can NOT be selected on art board, it is behaving as if locked if you try to select on the art board, but is not.
Can select the text sub layer in the layers panel. Can select all on the layer in art board, but not text items individually. Can select objects individually on art board.
3) Many of mentioned text sub layers, but not all, also show a solid dot in right hand layers column indicating that they have appearance attributes applied. However no attribures are actually applied and remove attributes is grayed out.
I'm thinking that I hit some strange quick key combo by mistake that has done some wacky lock thing, but I can't find any indication of such.
Tried ungrouping all, unlocking all for the layer and the whole file with no change.
Any thoughts?

There's a weird bug/issue with appearances applied at the layer state. Once they are applied, they can't be removed. That may be why your'e seeing the meatball to the right of the layer name. As far as I know the only way to remove that Appearance indicator is to copy/paste to a new layer.
I can't seem to configure a file which shows your issues other than what I've posted above. I'm thinking perhaps there's a clipping mask in place?
Any change you could provide a link to a sample file with the issue?
Have you tried basic trouble-shooting of removing the AI prefs?

I am using the Dreamweaver behaviour "set text of layer" and
I am having problems with escaping
single AND double quotes in the javascript.
Because the text I want to set the Layer with contains some
javascript.
So the text of my layer contains both single and double
quotes.
I can escape the single quotes like this:
But I can't escape the double quotes the same way for some
reason.
even if I use \" javascript thinks it's the end of the
javascript function.
So I have tried using " in the javascript of the
text to set, but strangely, although it works
in Safari, it does not work in FireFox and IE.
When I mouse over my javascript link set in the layer, the
browser status bar shows the right thing
in Safari, but in IE and FireFox, it shows extra double
quotes...

Magic wand selection shape from one layer, drop to sub layer and copy that shape from that layer.

In PS i can Magic wand selection shape from one layer, drop to sub layer and copy that selected shape from that sub layer. How do I do this in illistrator, and moreover, from multiple layer at the same time.
For instance, in PS = Import an image of gold - select a text phrse with wand - drop to gold - copy paste = gold text.
How is this done in illustrator?

Basicly I want to do what takes me 10 minutes to do in PS in Illistrator. LOL! I realize I must learn Illistrator; especially for logo design.
I want to select my objects in Illistrator and drop to another layer and copy that layer but with only the selection to create another new layer with that which I
originally selected and then copied from another layer.
1. Select objects
2. copy that selection from another image. "gold effect taken from an image"
3 paste that which was selected = that which was selected, but in gold.

Set Text of Layer Question

A Very Easy Question.
I attempt to "set text of layer." I click on the plus sign on
the behaviors window, and set text to layer. A cute little box pops
up. In the Layer drop down box is a host of "unnamed
<span>"s. None of my divs are listed. In the body of this
page are Plenty of ID'd divs. I have named layers out the wazoo.
Why Are My Named Layers Not Listed In the Layer Drop Down

It would depend entirely on your level of HTML expertise.
One way to solve the problem would be to use an IFrame to
contain the
external content on the page, but a frame is a frame is a
frame. By that I
mean that IFrames usually provide all the user problems that
frames do.

Linking from one page to another is how static HTML pages
work. Having a
single page to display multiple content elements as loaded
from a database
requires that the page return to the server to fetch new
content from the
database on each click. Either method requires a page
refresh.
Linking to content that is placed within an IFrame doesn't
require this page
refresh, but carries other disadvantages as mentioned above.

Set Text of Layer Blowup?

Hi all,
Here is the page in question:

The box of cd's to the lower left is contained in two divs
with the set text of layer behavior. In FF and Safari in Mac it
works great. On the other hand, IE in Mac, it blows the bottom of
the page up, adding about 300-400 pixels of white space below the
footer. Usually when I notice something disastrous happening in IE
in Mac, it's worse in PC. Could someone please have a look at this
page in IE on a PC/Window XP etc. Perhaps I will get lucky this
time out, and it will be fine on that platform.
I have to admit, I copied the code and divs from a layout
that I did using tables. I don't think that is the problem though,
because this might have been happening in the tables layout as
well, just not as bad.

Looks fine to me in IE/WXPPro, and FF 1.5.0.6.

Set text of layer...again

hi everybody
any ideas as to why when i use the set text of layer
behaviour i'm losing the hand cursor when you mouseover the link?
the behaviour works fine, but i'm getting the text cursor, so it
doesn't look like a link when you view the page, although it
works...i've tried changing the cursor option in the css, but that
still doesn't seem to make any difference...thanks in advance

It would have nothing to do with the STOL behavior, but
rather what you are
pasting into it.
Any event handler directly on an <img> tag will fail to
produce the pointer.
You need to make sure that when applying behaviors directly
to <img> tags,
you always use the <A> onMouse event. Try that....

Text of Layer Restore

Manually creating image menu that will use Set Text of Layer
onMouseOver. How do I set the Text of Layer back to default layer?
In other words, onMouseOut executes like Swap Image Restore, only
for text layer.

Adding anchor is adding a 'sub-layer' ! help!

Help!! I haven't had this happen before,.... I created and
named a layer. Typed in a header and added an anchor -- BUT THE
ANCHOR DOESN"T APPEAR! I find it 1/2 way down my page, in a newly
created layer! When i loof at the 'layers" panel, it is in fact a
??sub-layer' under the one i created -- but when i delete the
'sub-layer' it deletes the layer i created... WHAT IS
HAPPENING>?and how can i stop it! thanks so much!!

How do I make a clipping mask whilst preserving sub layer structure?

Hi guys,
I am editing a map and need my map split into multiple rectangular segments. My map is made up of many layers and sub layers which I need to preserve. When I clipping mask the map with a rectangle all of the map's subs layers merge into one layer. How do I make a clipping mask whilst preserving sub layer structure? It seems like a 'layer mask' is the correct tool but doesn't seem like CS6 has it?

I avoid sublayers, because they really were never thoroughly developed, and when you open files, you get all your layers flipped open.
So for me paste in front works great for pasting a mask directly above the element you want to mask. Unfortunatley paste in front does not work well with sublayers so you will need to drag the mask down into the the sublayer. But atleast if you have a complex document with many sublayers, the paste in fornt gets you close.
eg; Mask is in clipboard, I select sublayer Illinois
After doing a paste in front, the mask (star shape) is not in the sublayer, but above
Drag the star shape down one in to the sublayer Illinois, select entire sublayer(use radio button right of the layer name)
and make clip mask

Illustrator to Acrobat - Edit Text

So I had to make a marketing pdf with graphics and text. They only way I knew how to was in illustrator CS5. I exporting the individual pages then combined them all in Acrobat X. Now a sales rep needs me to change the text on some of the pages for a particular client. Is there an easy way I can make the full pdf document have editable text so my sales reps can change it as needed?
Can this be done by saving it as a word document? When I tried it with 1 page the fonts changed on me. I don't know Acrobat that well so I'm starting to learn it now. Should I have made the template in Illustrator and did the text in Acrobat???

No, this isn't really realising. Everyone working on a collaborative document needs to use the same software, and recreate the PDF after even the smallest change. Or, one person needs to co-ordinate the change. Acrobat doesn't turn PDFs into a simply editable thing, and it's best not to even start down the limited editing path that is there.
I'd like to recommend you consider InDesign, probably a far more suitable tool. Or even Word if the layout is simpler.
Above all KEEP THE ORIGINAL AND REMAKE THE PDF. On no account ever convert from PDF to something else to edit it.

Text to speech problem/glitch in 10.6.8

I have recently been having problems with my macbook pro running Mac OS X 10.6.8 announcing the time, and more recently I have had a general text to speech problem. It used to annouce the time perfectly every hour, however now whenever the time changes to noon or midnight in announces instead "it is now 12 o *garble" with the garble sounding like the computer glitching or like a cd skipping. That wasnt too big of problem but now it has started to effect my ipod shuffle, and text to speech messes up the pronuciation on about half the songs on it. Does anybody have suggestions or have they dealt with a similiar problem?

If that does not help, then it is more likely to be a software issue affecting the overall OS. It might be a third-party system extension that is causing a conflict, or some system component may have become corrupted since the original installation. System extensions are installed here

but it is often difficult to see anything that is obviously wrong. If you see anything listed that is obviously for hardware or software that you no longer use, you can try removing it.
Short of doing a complete re-install of Mac OS X, it may help to apply the 10.6.8 "combo" update manually. This will re-install all the system components that have been updated since the initial 10.6 release. It can sometimes fix mysterious problems that are difficult to diagnose precisely. This is the combo updater for 10.6.8.

Sub-layer created when breaking link to symbol bad idea?

When breaking the link to a symbol the contents is put into a sub-layer. I see no value in this and I am constantly disposing of the new layer. If it were a group it would be simple because groups don't exist without content, but layers must be deleted. Does anyone else have this grip or can you convince me this is a great new idea? I'm pretty sure this did not happen in CS4.

Just group the symbol before breaking link and when you "break link" the resulting artwork is a nested group instead of a sub-layer. No more useless layer to deal with.
